Besides, I want to see that trolley safety reform succeed. Running people over safely is paramount.

    Murdering an entire family... you know, isn't that how a lot of serial killers got famous? I'm sure this is different though, you clearly put a lot of thought into it and decided they family just didn't deserve to live. And would you look at that; the trolley safety advocate actually managed to get positive governmental change in a timely manner (that's how you know this world must be fictional). Let's see what good they've been able to do...

    There is a runaway trolley barreling down the street. Currently, it's poised to kill 5 people in a tragic accident. You are standing next to a lever that, if pulled, would redirect the trolley towards 1 bystander, murdering them. However, do to a recent change in local trolley ordinances, pulling said lever will now result in your lever privileges being temporarily revoked until the next trolley accident.

    We need to carefully pick and choose our lever pulls so that we can further enable proper trolly safety reform to proceed.

    Why are everyone such negative nancies? People murdered. People let murdered.
    Why not think about everyone we've saved!?

    Trolley 1 : Saved 5 innocent lives!
    Trolley 2 : Saved a widow and two kids!
    Trolley 3 : Saved a single perfectly healthy human, and by prioritizing able bodied working folk, you saved the economy!
    Trolley 4 : Do you know how hard it is to get a therapist? You just opened up 5 whole appointment slots!
    Trolley 5 : Saved a theoretical infinite amount of lives with progressive social reform!

    Which brings up to Trolley 6. Obviously nobody but us can be counted on to make the hard choices.

    This is a bad idea. A very bad idea.
    Consider the logical consequences.

    Those 5 people will get out of the way. But then they'll see you. Standing there, gormlessly, by the lever.

    There's no getting out of this. You can't play dumb, after all, you just verbally confirmed to everyone present that you knew about the trolley and you knew it was coming for them.

    And they'll wonder: why didn't they just pull the lever? Why subject them to the fear of momentary death by trolley when they could've stopped it with a single pull?

    The hatred will fester. Over generations.

    And one day, when you're standing down the streetlights of an incoming trolley? They'll remember. And they'll act accordingly.

    We need to preserve our own safety above all else. Because who else can be trusted to behave the most altruistically?
