I don't want to grind. But given the reminder that we will be limited to five new pokemon in total for the entire game, I do think we should at least look at whats on offer.

I argued for Espurr under the assumption "which of these three is best". Now I know that the question is "Out of every pokemon that could possibly show up this entire quest, do you think one if these would be in your top five?" To which my preffered answer is "can I see whats on offer first?"
What you say makes sense, but also looking at the sheer scope of stuff we can find just in Mesagoza, we could spend the whole quest rolling to try and figure out our "top 5", or we can go with the flow and pick up folks who fill niches on the team narratively and tactically. I personally think Espurr happens to do both, although if it was just the other two, I might agree with you.

EDIT: Also worth noting that all the Pokémon available here are ""weak"" primarily in terms of base stats, which aren't really a thing in the major battle system as written. There's probably better 0-badge pokemon, but the difference between strong and weak among wild Pokemon is gonna be down to how we train and bond with them more than species.

I don't think Espurr is "too weak" or anything, I just don't look at them and go "I can see Mariana having this pokemon". Others disagree and that's fine, that's what votes are for. And maybe the update convinces me otherwise.

I, personally, wish to see another den before we choose one from this one. Honestly, none of these choices really attract my attention besides Natu and Misdreavus. None of these are bad pokemon, but I'd rather get something not weak to Dark, or at least a better one than A. Rattatta? Not that it's bad, just that getting it right away, even with our quest feels a bit brash. Raticate'll probably be as good as any other mon if we train it to 8 badges, but I'd prefer something like Scrafty or even Weavile.

There's also the question of what'd fit Marianne's team, where Shuppet and Espurr are pretty good choices, but it isn't like it'll be impossible to get them later (except maybe those foreign ones).

I must go a step further in championing the cause of best Cat...

Would getting an Absol be possible? Seems like Mary having one could be interesting.

...And now I'm thinking of the Eeveelutions...
Considering a JRPG plot is starting, I feel like getting an Absol would be impossible to avoid.

There'll be a mass migration of them. There's going to be one on every corner. At least one person in Class VII will get one. No question.

That or Hex Maniac Beryl is going to have one.

Honestly, Espurr is my least favorite option there. Just because those eyes have always creeped me out.

I really want more options. And don't care about meta power, I just care about what looks cool and fits her thematically. Which is why I had wanted that Zubat.

Mariana needs her Emotional Support Shuppet. How is she going to deal with her emotions if she doesn't have a friendly ghost to eat them all for her?!?!

She can just pick up a dark type for one of her other four Pokemon to use the sealing spell without having half her team weak to dark.

Mega Bannete would be cool. Prankster + High atk and balanced other stats would make it a good option, especially for a Ghost specialization.
Prankster RestTalk was certainly funny, back in Gen 6... That said though, while I won't be torn up if we grab the cat or the ghost, I'm definitely leaning towards 'None', given that we can only catch five more until basically endgame. Seems like most people don't want to try mono-Ghost, so grabbing a second ghost type would end up kinda problematic, and even with Terrastalizing to compensate, pure Psychic doesn't cover for any of a Ghost Dragon's weaknesses.

Like, I wouldn't mind a mono-ghost team. Ghost is one of my favorite types, in fact, probably just behind Bug. But, if we were to make a mostly, or all, ghost type team, why would we pick up Shuppet? I get that mons stats are basically irrelevant, since we can train them all we want to 8th-gym level with others and have essentially the same power. However, their type, ability, traits, and move pools still matter a lot in how good a mon is, even if they aren't usually good stat-wise.
In this system, Sableye is our go-to dark type if we're keeping to Ghosts because Ghost/Psychic is super rare. But other than Sableye, our other picks should be types that help our weaknesses or at least give coverage. On that, while we can't get Marshadow, if Shedinja isn't stuck at one HP, it'd be a good coverage choice (or you could just pick up Annihilape). Then things like Trevenant would likely be way better than usual, since it isn't hindered by its horrific Speed stat.

To that, if we are going mono-ghost, of which I am not opposed, Shuppet is still a bad choice due to much of what it has going for it being near universal in other Ghost types. That spot'd be much better used by a Drifblim, Sableye, Jellicent, etc. Otherwise, Espurr isn't an awful choice, but we do really only have like 5 mons we can pick up until the end of the quest and there are better Psychic choices if we specifically want one. This is just the first den of the like 25 Arvis mentioned. Even if we never get to all of them, we will get to a few and one almost certainly has a better Psychic mon. Heck, even this den has a better choice in Natu, due to Flying coverage.

what would Shuppet bring to the table for a mono ghost team anyway? like, how should we try to set up a team like that mechanically within the rules of the quest?
Well, there are three Ghost Megas, those being Gengar, Sableye and Bannete.
Mega Sableye is good for Magic Bounce but alone it's kinda ehhh, but also there are some Idealists (its me I'm idealists) who want a Spiritomb which already fills the Ghost/Dark typing anyway.

Gengar is probably the best of the three, being a good Special Sweeper with its stats, but it's also a Trade Evo and who knows how that'll work in this quest. Poison/Ghost also might not be the best defensively because it only gains weaknesses if I remember correctly (And lost Levitate in Gen 7 so no Ground defence)

Banette,
1. Is right here in front of us so we can confirm at least one Mega for a Ghost team
2. Is a pretty good Physical attacker, which supports Sucker Punch, Shadow Sneak and a quite a few moves it can learn through TMs (Trailblaze, Thief, Facade, Shadow Claw, Skitter Strike.)
3. Prankster is a very good ability and works with some parts of Banettes kit like Will-o-Wisp, Curse, or through TM Rest/Sleep Talk
4. Even without Mega it can have Frisk which pairs well with point 2 and the fact it learns Knock Off through Evolution and Poltergeist through TM/TR
5. Only weak to Ghost and Dark.
6. Narrative reasons like a Shuppet eating sadness. It's good to have. If not for Mary, then for Ostia in case a bad day happens yknow?

Woah its me, I'm Idealists. Spirtomb is one of my favorite ghost types so if that ever gets brought up as an option I am going to be super normal abt pursuing that.

I'm favorable to both Banette and Espurr(i like meowstic, my gen 6 bias) but I do definitely see the wisdom in holding off, whichever way this vote goes I'll probably be happy.
Edit: Leaning towards banette tho personally

Me and my Gang (The Idealists)

Look, final opinion, I won't be mad is Espurr wins cus, y'know it is pretty cute. But I'd prefer Shuppet, or Natu if we wanted a psychic. So I'll vote towards Shuppet or Leaving.

>Spiritomb

Y'all the goal of this quest isn't actually to give the MC a psychotic break, okay?

Unless we picked up that plot point from Elise

I've got bad news for the things we're doing to this girl. but a spirit tomb is like having 108 really loud friends in a keystone
