Honestly it feels like the biggest thing holding Marianna back rn is the strength of her team more than anything, with Roland stuck as a Dreepy for now, considering one of it's Pokedex entries literally says a child could beat a Dreepy if it's alone, and our Espurr basically not even truly being on the team atm. Obviously Roland's gotten stronger but imo the difference between beating Nemona and continuing this losing streak is whether Roland can evolve into Drakloak before Nemona can get just that much farther ahead (and also having literally any other Pokemon that we can actually use in a battle lmfao)

Well, with any luck we can pick up a second team member during the FE, get them up to reasonable par, and go from there. Hopefully we can get Renne on board with battling soon-ish, and then we'll have a solid three members.

Fr fr, or honestly even just the ability to use Renne in battle could probably net Marianna the win rn. We know Roland can beat Nemona's Wattrel, possibly even consistently, and our Espurr is both already decently strong and has a type advantage against Monferno. Ofc that doesn't necessarily guarantee the win, it is Nemona after all, but realistically Marianna's not as far behind Nemona as the losing streak makes it seem. Just some outside handicaps preventing her from grabbing that W

List of priorities in terms of getting strong quick
1. Bond 3 Espurr
2. Extreme Speed for Drakloak
3. Training a third, usable pokemon
In that order.

Benefits include MXP for all pokemon, more social events for Renne, More SKLL just from taking training actions

We don't want Roland to evolve too quickly though, considering the ego issues inherent to him being a dragon (and according to Renne his ghostness making him unable to let got of a grudge).

Him alone is enough to put us in the top half of the top class in our year at the Academy, rushing towards evolution would be counterproductive when there's other ways to improve (though frankly I'm surprised there's not a minimum badge level he needs to reach to evolve on top of needing Extremespeed, considering in-game Dreepy need to reach level 50 to evolve).

Oh yeah, that's why I agree with Sakamander that our biggest priority for getting stronger is probably better to be getting Renne useable rather rather than power leveling to Drakloak, tho the right 3rd Pokemon could also nab us a win before Nemona barrels down the Gyms. A decent water, ground, or flying type for instance, that we manage to catch at a decent strength during the Field Exercise? Could be just the edge Marianna's missing

Conference winners are given the privilege of undertaking the Champion Assessment. Where they'll have to fight the Elite Four and the current reigning Champion so that they can be considered a Champion Rank Trainer. The Conference winner has until the start of the next Circuit in August to issue their challenge, once they do they can't back out and have to fight the Elite Four until they either make it to the Champion and win or they lose.
Out of curiosity, as the effective head of the League, is it within Geeta's authority to grant that privilege to more than just the actual winner of the Conference?

Like if there's a year featuring two different prodigies who would each easily have won the tournament if the other wasn't there, and faced off in the final round?

Even if we collectively decided to full send Roland's training to speed run extremespeed i'd still take us a while to get there. I think we have plenty of time to get our bond up to at least 3 1/2 or 4. Plenty enough to reign in a slightly cocky mama's boy of a Drakloak

Don't worry, guys. I'm sure Nemona will stand still and not continue to get even stronger herself while Mary tries to evolve Roland.

Roland could probably beat Sonny right now if he were a Drakloak, that's true. Will that still hold true in a month when Roland finally gets ExtremeSpeed and evolves? Or will Nemona improve herself and her team beyond even those capabilities in that time?

It's kind of funny to me, because Sonny has one of the worst match-ups against Roland you can imagine. Objectively, Sonny shouldn't be winning these matches; he's a land-bound close-range Fire/Fighting-type Pokemon facing off against a speedy aerial Dragon/Ghost-type Pokémon who has access to moves that damage Sonny over the course of a fight. He is a Pokémon who should be at an insurmountable disadvantage against Roland.

Yet he's winning every match. Why?

It's because Nemona recognised those weaknesses and came up with strategies to overcome them. She's taught him how to fly. She's taught him how to reposition himself on the battlefield extremely quickly, even mid-air. She's taught him how to effectively use a Dark-type move to hurt the Ghost-types he's naturally challenged against. And they've still found time to work on the things he's naturally strong in with his Fire and Fighting-type moves, too!

And all that while she was training up a Wattrell, too. Let's not forget that.

Let's not trick ourselves into thinking Nemona will patiently hang around at her current level while Roland gets stronger. She knows what she's doing. Even if Roland evolves, that's just a challenge for her to overcome, and she will figure out how to overcome a power differential like that.

Honestly I'm more wary of what'll happen when Renne reaches Bond 3. If it happens soon enough that she can fight and beat Sunny, especially if Roland hasn't yet managed that, I can't see him taking that well. Particularly with his own grudge from their first meeting.

I agree with this. I know that many do want to try and keep pace with Nemona. But I believe that the relationship with our pokemons is more important than power, aside from the gym battles.

Ok but you say this like working on Roland's MXP (Which also gives PokeXP and SKLL XP) is falling that much behind.

Like yeah Nemona will outpace us regardless of what we do, but working towards Evolution which still makes us and Roland stronger in every way isn't an inferior route in this instance. We're still gaining everything we would've gained otherwise we're just working to a slightly different objective.
But I believe that the relationship with our pokemons is more important than power, aside from the gym battles.
In a world where two different franchises about the power of friendship combine into one, the power of friendship might be important. So you raise a good point.

Yeah hopefully with 4 or more training sessions we can get Roland to evolve by finally mastering agility then extremespeed
I'd like to get Roland to Bond 3 or even 4 if at all possible before evolution. I don't have the numbers in front of me right now but I assume Bond 3 is very doable, and Bond 4 is way more iffy. I'd like to make sure Roland won't go full Ash's Charmeleon on us or try and kill Renne like the disgruntled ghost type he is.

But anyways, once we have a third pokemon of one badge strength or more, and Renne at Bond 3, we'll have closed a lot of Mariana's weaknesses. We'll be off to the races once Roland evolves into a Drakloak too.

Speaking of catching pokemon though, what's our plan for getting more members? If we manage to get 5-6 badges before the end of the year and plan to get more I think we'll have to go for a full party of 6 right?

I honestly think bond 4 is extremely possible before evolution due to extremespeed being a complex move. Besides since we're likely to get a new member during this outing, Roland will have to share his training time with the new blood.

I say this because I know there's an ongoing conversation around the topic that dozens of people are reading, and it's good to remind people that the other characters aren't static.

I'm not a maths person; I can't be fucked to calculate how many actions all this would take, I can't be fucked to calculate if this is the most efficient path, etc. Frankly, I have no idea if Mary actually stands a chance here. What I can do is remind people of things that can easily slip their minds.

This is a quest, and I know from painful experience running them how easy it is to slip into the mindset that other characters in a quest are static NPC's. It's worth it to me to spend the time reminding people reading the discussion of things like Nemona's own aptitude in her core thing, and to always remember that others are advancing just as Mary is and the current benchmark won't remain the benchmark for long.

Plus, you know, I like Nemona and I'd like to take the chance when I can to spend a bit of time analysing what she's doing and why she's doing it. I'd like to think that's valid of me.

It's an entirely fair reason, it's just, you come on a bit strong sometimes, especially when you open the post with a sarcastic jab, but maybe that's just how I'm seeing it. And just like you are trying to remind people that characters aren't static, which should be pretty evident by Nemona's 4 Gyms 2 Field Events plan, I'm reminding people that going for the evolution is just as valid at this point as continuing to focus on PokeXP and SKLL.

Partially because I think we're letting our CHRM and PRWS fall by the wayside, so instead of making it about SKLL all the time, I'm shifting the conversation to be about MXP.

Oh trust me I know Nemona's not gonna be static at all, I'm more so just trying to say Marianna would have decent chances of winning if either Roland was a Drakloak rn (extremely unrealistic ofc) or more realistically, if Renne was actually useable, and that the gap between Nemona and Marianna feels worse than it might actually be. I mean we're only 2 points off of her in terms of SKL, that's not that insane of a difference. Nemona's better rn and she's crazy, and she's definitely only gonna get stronger, not gonna argue that, but at least to me the difference between them doesn't seem like, totally insurmountable with Nemona just guaranteed to exist ahead of Marianna permanently

I was just thinking we should shift to bumping up both PROW and CHRM to 13 actually now that we got SKLL up there. Right now we don't have an exact goal and thus optimal stat spread to aim for, and we're never going to be great with KNOW, so I was thinking the best choice to make right now while we're still young is to stay a generalist. It also provides opportunities to take actions we haven't tried before, like Battle Between Trainers.

Sure, once we have a goal in mind like Champion, Ranger, Knight, or (ergh) Politician, we can focus on one of our three big stats, but for now we just have the general goal of be better than we were last week.

Not to say we'll stop improving our other stats to hyperfocus on one, or that the Plot may or may not choose where our stats grow for us. Almost any career can be improved by increasing the trio of Prowess, Charm, and Skill. It's just that certain careers will probably be served better by one specific stat and thus it'd make sense to focus on that one.

Edit: I suspect that SKLL will keep rising though, so long as we're still chasing the sun. Just as an aside.

Im happy with keeping charm and skill even then letting prowess stay behind by a level.

Ex. [12]prow [13]chrm [13]skll

I'd personally prefer keeping all three on level with each other until at least they all get to 14, assuming we don't have a goal to prioritize before we get to that point. Once all three are at 14 we can reassess our goals and decide if we want to specialize in one stat or another. This seems doable within the year, even without taking into account more efficient forms of training our stats or the crucible of our Field Events, where I suspect we could get boatloads of XP and extra Bonding events due to the Plot that outpace traditional turns.

I agree that this would be the sensible move but I just don't see Mary specializing in prowess unless we decide to become a color grade ranger which I just don't see happening personally.

The knight path is fairly attractive to me, and I think a few other readers, so I wouldn't say PROW building is out of the question. Plus they're super attractive. Be quiet Inner Mariana.

As far as organizations go the Order of Verde doesn't seem like a bad choice to sign up in from an In-Universe or Meta perspective too.
  • Probably decent pay.
  • It's a respected position in society at large,
  • Comradery and friends in our fellow knights.
  • The knight skillset is exactly our three best stats. (Fighting and strength, talking and assuring people, pokemon training and handling.)
  • They seem like the organization to support/help out with sealing some demon gods.
  • In case of some sort of Civil War or political dispute we could be the point of connection to Elise "The Protagonist" Schwarzer.
  • If they do turn out to be or serve evil that's just a delightful plot point to get immersed in, narratively. With plenty of potential paths we can take in that scenario.

I did the math, and we'll need to do this immediately upon returning from the Field Study for it to have the effect we want, or we'll lose the opportunity. So we're doing that.

Hmmm yknow that does sound like a really good plan but the child in me just wants her to be the Pokémon master lol
