I'd assume three days out, two days back so we're left with 9 days of catching time. We can catch our Pokemon while trying to find a Kangaskhan, whatever we pick we're safe there (not Scyther anyway). It shouldn't take more than a day to get ours and silvers Pokemon. A week to snipe a Kangaskhan sounds not awful.

It'll be two days minimum. Radius, not diameter, and we're starting on one side, rather than the middle.

Also, if we have to slow down for, say, Silver, that's a thing.

Ah, that's right. Haven't done anything more complicated than arithmetic and minor probability calculation in a while. That makes this a lot harder. We also know that we can't go straight through because of the lake in the middle. EDIT: Eh, actually, reading it again, the lake's in the northeastern side, so we might be able to go straight through. Does make going there for a Water type actually somewhat off our path, though.

Alright, so that's ~2 days, ~3 days (slightly more than three), and ~5 days. We should probably expect... three to six days of travel to get there and a bit less to get back? That's rather an arbitrary ballpark, but other people with more hiking experience are free to make better estimates. :V

At the upper bounds that leaves us only two days to catch Kangaskhan (assuming that we take the downtime between travel hours to catch ours and Silver's instead of going out of our way for them), but I'm not inclined to be that pessimistic. I'd still say we shouldn't expect to have more than a week of spare time to catch Kangaskhan-- in fact, we should probably expect much less, especially if Silver slows us down (he's the weakest of the party at STR 7). Always plan for the worst.

Speaking of which, this really doesn't give us much time to account for things going wrong. If someone gets injured, that will slow us down catastrophically.

2x speed, 3x stamina cost.

Hm, that might turn out to be less distance covered overall, if the extra stamina cost means we can't do it for the full six hours. If we can, though, it might be worth it to hustle through the Safari Zone South (where it's safer), particularly on the way back. Or maybe we could just travel for longer at a time instead?

So these guys are all in the military and should be in pretty damn good shape. I'd imagine average human stats would be like 4-5. Anyway, I don't think Silver slowing us down should be a problem.

The average human stats have nothing to do with the numbers the QM gave us, which are directly about what Kotone can do? Silver having lower STR may mean he has a bit less stamina compared to her, even if he's still better than the average person. These are all very significant assumptions to make, anyway. You should probably ask @wdango about it rather than just assuming.

Don't forget you'll be carrying guns, rations, medicine, armour, traps etc.

We can just change how much every person is carrying to make travel speed the same right? Are we going to go through a pick your equipment before we set off then?

So at the numbers he gave us it's somewhere between 3 to 5 km across the south entrance. She can make 5 km/h on flatland, 3 km/h in terrain and 2 km/h up a mountain. Stealth will probably either 1/2 or 1/4 our speed. Either way, assuming we're not going up a mountain the whole time it should take a day to get to the north side. If we have to go around a lake (which we shouldn't since its at the north east corner) then we should double it.

Basically a Max of two days to get to the north side.

It's 5km/h on flatland, 3km/h when hiking, and 2km/h going through rough terrain. We won't be going up any mountains because Safari Zone South is a valley between two low hills. However, the area is predominantly plains and jungles-- @wdango, do we know the rough directions where the plains and the jungles lie, or are they too patchy?

A max of two days has to assume that Kotone and her partners have a straight path through the area, making 40-60km over uniform terrain-- either 12 hours over flatland or 20 hours hiking (which we aren't doing), carrying up to 30kg of weight. Putting aside the fact that Kotone is only confident that she can manage 6 hours of travel per day under those conditions (so only traveling on flatland over two days is actually reasonable, and 10-12h/day will probably be an exhausting march straight off the bat before we've even confronted the toughest part), this doesn't take into account any number of unknown factors that may make the path entirely not straight at all or even outright delay us, such as:
  • the amount of time we'll take to catch our pokemon (Nidoran prefer the areas bordering the hills or the jungles, so we'll probably have to go off our path for that, and likely we'll also have to divert for Poliwag unless we can find it in one of the mountain streams; besides, even the most foolproof plan is subject to Murphy's Law)
  • whether we should/need to move stealthily
  • whether there are any streams in our path that we may have to cross or avoid
  • whether we encounter any pokemon that we'll either have to avoid or deal with
  • whether we may need to avoid or cross into jungles (which will probably drop our speed to 2km/h)
And probably other factors I haven't even thought of. This is like the spherical cow-- an idealized model that doesn't at all resemble the reality. Plans should always account for the worst, and not be based on the most ideal scenario. I'm more inclined to plan around the timeframe of ten days to get there and back; if things go well, then we'll be early, and if they go poorly-- well, at least it's not as bad as planning for a two-day journey and taking six.

So I used the wrong number for distance. I wasn't trying to assume best case.

6*5=30 km/day 6*3=18km/day 6*2= 12km/day

So best case we're 30 km/day. 40 km to get past the south. So 1 1/3 days.
Worst case we're walking 12 km/day. 60 km to get past the south. So 5 days.

Let's assume we can have an average of the terrains and max distance. 20 km/day/60km would take 3 days.

That's not even taking into account unforeseen circumstances. So add an extra day. 4 days to get to the north. We can double time on the way back out because stamina won't matter at that point. So hopefully our travel time through all of that will be about 7 days.

Hm.

Alright. Using the wrong number is fair enough; I made the same mistake earlier, anyway. I wouldn't average out all the terrain; while I'm going for the worst case scenario, even being more reasonable I would put the lower bound at 4 days. Something along the lines of six one-hour detours there-and-back is a reasonable estimate-- which is why I'd double it, for two extra days, since the amount anyone thinks is reasonable is almost always the lower ballpark. We also know that we'll need to detour a bit to get to Nidoran territory, though that probably won't be more than two hours onto our total time, so I'd fold it into the extra days. Assuming 4 days to get there and 2 days to get back, that's 8 days total.

I'd still advocate for 10 days, but eight is a more likely estimate, imo.

@wdango thanks for the poll! I think we've been doing okay on not being toxic, but it does help visualise things.

I think Poliwag is more universally acceptable abstractly but Oddish is more acceptable to a majority - it has both stronger supporters and stronger detractors, and the supporters win by a reasonable margin, in part because of the sunk cost.

So Kotone thinks it'll be easy, handy (and cute?), save on research time but a minority of her brain is very worried about Gloom being stinky and other downsides.

Edit: the travel time thing is one reason I want to get our Oddish first thing, in the South. It's cold, but I want to get our stuff out of the way before helping Leaf.

Oh oh oh, can she ask Professor Joy about Gloom stink training options and difficulty, I didn't think of it before but it's super relevant to the decision, @wdango?
