I love the shipteens but I think I'd prefer Lina or the Gysian survivor atm.

…I'm somewhat scared to ask, but why? Genuinely curious of reasoning.

The Shiplords form a fascist, xenophobic, culture. The desired end state of acculturation growing up in Shiplord society is to either accept or tolerate it, and all of its atrocities. The Shiplord who pushed the goopify button Amanda's parents was once a Shipteen too, and eventually grew up thinking and believing that turning the adults of an entire world into slurry was either good or necessary, if not both. This is a culture that is intensely aware that it's committing unforgivable sins, but which keeps doing them anyway because they're convinced that they don't have a better option. They've created an objectively insane gantlet where to survive you need to be strong enough to threaten them, but not strong enough to scare them, and if you fail on either metric your reward is extinction.

Everyone in their culture either buys in to this at some level, or puts themselves on ice, but they actually can't ignore the truth of what they do. The Sorrows as a cultural project basically failed in making the Shiplords change their behavior, but it did ensure that every single Shiplord had to be aware of it. The Shipteens are in the middle of that acculturation process, and that's an incredibly interesting perspective to see more of! Basically everyone else in their society has either accepted mass xenocides as the cost of doing business, or grown cynical about their inability to effect any change. A Shipteen has fallen to neither of those, and their entire process of cultural assimilation has been thrown off kilter. That's cool as hell.

[] Delve into the reality physics archives

I'm torn between these two. Not the AI archive. The AI archive is of tremendous importance, but ultimately, it's not why we're here.

We're here because the Consolat created the Secrets, wrote them into reality, and died in the doing. And that is both the most fundamental defining feature of our galaxy's history and the cornerstone of the enormous edifice of the Shiplords' obsessive madness.

And that, the Consolat did with reality physics. And no one else could figure out how, and it was the last free-ish species giving up on the task in despair that sealed the fate of the galactic system, formalizing the Tribute system and making it effectively unchallengeable for hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of years.

So that's what we're here to figure out.

...

The question is whether to dig straight into the reality physics archives (which realistically contain more data than we can possibly take with us in a reasonable amount of time, but which Mary might well find something in out of sheer inspiration), or to dig into the project overviews. Given that we've heard it suggested that the Consolat didn't expect to die in the process of creating the Secrets, it seems likely that they were documenting what they were doing right up until the end. So we might get a LOT of keywords and insight into the top level of what they were doing, which would in turn make it a LOT easier to figure out which parts of the reality physics archives are relevant.

EDIT:

I admit, understanding Consolat AI tech better might, for example, let Iris ascend into some kind of info-goddess who could figure all this out in a jiffy, or let us talk to the system defense AI and get an alternate route to figuring this out. But... that's speculative, at best.

Basically in this case the Shiplords did look into the Main AI Research Center of the Consolat and they did not see the same thing Amanda and Mary did.

Think of it like a self-constructed Potemkin Village:

The Shiplords looked at the blown up server farms, most likely even downloaded everything in the databases we are now examining and then analyzed all of it as many times as they could and missed the context and relationships between the various data points that would result in accurate information that would even enable them to analyze the technology of the Consolat properly.

Look into what the word Panopticon means, look into the history of the idea and its relationship with Grigory Potemkin. It's pretty fucking obvious when looked at from the point of differing paradigms of different polities. Which also means that looking at the prisoners that haven't lost hope should be our priority for context right now so:

We need to look at how the Consolat themselves thought about their knowledge and what they did with it before we look into what knowledge they do have on various subjects. So I agree with your choice here @Simon_Jester but from a Social Sciences point of view instead of your own Natural Sciences argument.

As for the Sidestory I want to see the people who are only the victims of the System the Shiplords have built responding to the possibility of that System changing.

I see people voting for reality physics, and I want to point out.

That's the layman's term for it.

Yes Mary already mentioned in this newest update:

"Wait!" Mary snapped. You froze in place, adrenaline surging up for a moment, before Sidra wiped it away. Mary had finished clearing her gaze, and her green eyes were fixed on the display where your hand had stopped.

"That category," her voice filled with awe. "Is Sidra getting the same translation?"

You glanced back at the display. "Reality physics?"

Mary nodded fiercely. "It's what Pre-Sorrows humanity called early research into the Secrets. The technical name was Quantum Graph Theory, but that's not commonly known. The field was largely subsumed by study avenues opened through Practice, but the term is technically the same even today. What I've been doing with trying to unravel Practice and the Secrets, that's reality physics.

that the proper technical name is Quantum Graph Theory.

@Snowfire, you might want to change up the setup a bit if this is meant to be a dual vote. Honestly I'm interested in more than just these two; this is tactical voting.
I honestly never really meant it to be voted on, more a "Hey, let me know what you think would be neat to see." where voting is done more through conversation than actual votes. If people want to put a vote down for their preferred outlook, I won't object, but I'll take the conversational tenor of the thread into account too.
A Shipteen has fallen to neither of those, and their entire process of cultural assimilation has been thrown off kilter. That's cool as hell.
Well, uh…

No pressure, right? >.>

Seriously, I'm glad I've found a perspective that is this so interesting to you. I really hope that whenever they next come up, I can live up to these expectations.
I have to wonder- I don't actually know- surely the Shiplords know this place is here? Surely they've looked into it?
Almost certainly, but something to remember (I know it's been a while) is that part of the issue here is outlook. The Shiplords looked ever, ever outwards. The Consolat looked inwards instead. Almost every race since the Consolat died was influenced in some way by the Shiplords, and ultimately changed a great deal by that influence. It took different forms over the millennia, of course, but it still made those cultures just a little bit more like that of the Shiplords.

There are precisely two species in the galaxy that haven't had this happen to them. One is the Neras, the only surviving contemporary to the Shiplords. The other is humanity.

This matters.
I see people voting for reality physics, and I want to point out.

That's the layman's term for it.
And if you want to try and translate the technical to layman, I won't stop you. But I did warn you when you suggested the addition that many might just glaze over the term :p

[] Focus on AI research data

Possible boost to Iris. Possible understanding of the AI that remains to defend the system. Maybe useful information and context on their understanding of computer architecture and design such that we could work on repairing some of the corruption?

[X] Look for project overviews and summaries

Best case point us at the really cool or useful bits right off the bat. Worst case a ton of information on pie in the sky/incomplete research projects that have no bearing on anything around today.

[] Delve into the reality physics archives

Best case a better understanding of the patch underlying reality. Possible context for the corruptive data dump - maybe some of it can be recovered? Potential insight into Practice, and a really interesting time if that's something different enough.

As for side stories, ship teens are a really interesting insight. Neras as their contemporaries. Humans outside of Sol doing stuff would also be a fun take. More warden pov would be amazing after Kicha's civil war threat

Wasn't going to vote just yet because I'm... Unsure on this. But this vote option feels right now with that reasoning Dmol8 gave.
Archive integrity: 92. You lucky little-
We've said before: you aren't creating a Quest, you are writing down and sharing the tale of others, in other realms, that was passed to you and your muse. Or well, to your dice. One of the two.
  • Across the stars we search - PoV Shipteens
  • Current disposition of the FSN's First Fleet, picking the bones of their latest target - PoV Lina Sharpe
  • Warden once meant something. Today, we shall remind our people that we do not bend - PoV Kicha, Entara (Gysian survivor)
  • Under the light of Sol, humanity gathers its might to cast across the galaxy - PoV Adriana Thera
  • How the world has changed - PoV High Fleetlead Taldor (Returning) Events in progress, currently unavailable.
  • Between the stars we seek - PoV Alternate Nutrient Source Advised (Neras Starhome)
  • Shields to guard the homes of the oppressed - PoV Human construction group, random Group of Five system.
Of these... The two that I immediately rule out are Lina and Adriana. Those are important, I want to know them, but I don't want to know them now. But the four remaining options are much harder to choose between. That said, I am currently heavily favouring the Shipteens for... Well, see below.
…I'm somewhat scared to ask, but why? Genuinely curious of reasoning.
For me the reasoning is very simple. Currently the role we serve in this tale is that of the Consolat. But the Shipteens? Oh, the role they are filling is both obvious yet subtly hidden. Glorious yet terrifying. But above all, powerful.

For the role of the Shipteens in this tale is, in effect, The Shiplords who seek Outwards, Partners of the Consolat, who look Inwards.

Almost certainly, but something to remember (I know it's been a while) is that part of the issue here is outlook. The Shiplords looked ever, ever outwards. The Consolat looked inwards instead. Well, yes. On the other hand, it seems kind of unlikely that everything in the Consolat databases has proven useless to the Shiplords. Just because I'm "outward-looking" and you're "inward-looking" doesn't mean I can't read your blueprints for a toaster oven.

So thinking a bit deeper about this narrative, we are most likely to see the Shiplords looking at something and finding it 'incomprehensible' when it involves particularly philosophy-adjacent insights. Things least like 'the blueprints for a toaster oven' and most like 'the scientific method itself.'

Of course, it wouldn't actually BE the scientific method itself, because I'm pretty sure the Shiplords would never have gotten into space in the first place if they didn't have a concept of testing falsifiable hypotheses or whatever. But that gives us more of the idea of what we're looking for.

Yeah I'm thinking shipteens, wardens, and humanity gathering it's might. I think the shipteens because it's the younger generation of the shiplords. The group that will matter in the future after the war. Wardens because they are the past. Also I just want to see humanity gathering and the Doomstack we are building.

This is why we're here. Consolat fucked up and we have to release a patch, or something.

As for the sidestories:
  • Current disposition of the FSN's First Fleet, picking the bones of their latest target - PoV Lina Sharpe
  • Under the light of Sol, humanity gathers its might to cast across the galaxy - PoV Adriana Thera
Military and industrial status updates. Pass.
  • Shields to guard the homes of the oppressed - PoV Human construction group, random Group of Five system.
Industrial status update paired with humans interacting with aliens. More interesting.
  • Across the stars we search - PoV Shipteens
  • Warden once meant something. Today, we shall remind our people that we do not bend - PoV Kicha, Entara (Gysian survivor)
Characters we're already familiar with doing things. I want to see what the Shipteens are up to and how they're approaching the mystery of the disappearing alt history gamers. I want to know the status of Kicha's money vis-à-vis her mouth.

Best Friends Forever... and Ever
So, while the vote is cooking... here's an omake. I ominously present:

Epilogue: Best Friends Forever... and Ever

Months had passed since the fateful Spring Fling that finally opened Amanda and Mary's eyes to their relationship. Now, on a beautiful summer day, friends and family gathered to celebrate their wedding.

Iris, now 26, stood at the altar as Amanda's maid of honor. She beamed with pride and a touch of relief. After years of obliviousness, false starts, and hilariously misunderstood moments, her mother was finally tying the knot with the love of her life.

The music swelled, and Amanda appeared at the end of the aisle, radiant in her white gown. Mary's face lit up with a joy so palpable it brought tears to many eyes in the audience.

As Amanda reached the altar, she and Mary turned to face the officiant, their hands clasped tightly together. Iris felt a wave of emotion wash over her. Finally, finally, they were going to say the words that had been true for so long.

The officiant smiled warmly and began:

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the union of these two... best friends."

Iris's smile froze. What?

"Amanda and Mary have been inseparable since childhood, and today they come before us to declare their intention to be best friends forever."

Iris's eye twitched. She shot a panicked look at Vega in the front row, who looked equally confused.

Amanda and Mary, however, were beaming at each other, completely oblivious to the ripple of bewilderment going through the audience.

The officiant continued, "Amanda, do you take Mary to be your lawfully wedded best friend, to have sleepovers with, to share inside jokes with, and to cuddle platonically for as long as you both shall live?"

Amanda's eyes shone with happy tears. "I do!"

"And Mary, do you take Amanda to be your lawfully wedded bestie, to hold hands with in public, to have movie marathons with, and to plan your future friendship together for all eternity?"

Mary's voice was thick with emotion as she replied, "I do!"

Iris felt a scream building in her throat. This couldn't be happening. Not after all these years. Not after they'd finally figured it out!

As Amanda and Mary exchanged rings, referring to them as "friendship bracelets for fingers," Iris caught sight of Mikki in the audience. Her friend was struggling to contain her laughter, her shoulders shaking with the effort.

"By the power vested in me," the officiant declared, "I now pronounce you Best Friends Forever. You may now hug your bestie!"

Amanda and Mary embraced, and then, to everyone's relief, shared a deep, passionate kiss that was decidedly not platonic.

As applause erupted, Iris finally found her voice. "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" she shrieked, her voice cutting through the cheers.

Amanda and Mary broke apart, grinning mischievously.

"Gotcha," Amanda whispered, loud enough for Iris to hear.

Mary winked. "Did you really think we'd let our wedding go by without one last joke?"

Realization dawned on Iris's face, quickly followed by a mix of relief, exasperation, and grudging amusement. "You... you..." she sputtered, torn between laughing and throttling them both.

As Amanda and Mary made their way back down the aisle, now officially wife and wife (or "certified best friends," as their custom-made certificate would read), the guests alternated between laughter and confused muttering.

At the reception, as Iris gave her maid of honor speech, she couldn't help but shake her head in fond exasperation.

"To Amanda and Mary," she said, raising her glass. "Who went from being the most oblivious not-couple in history to the most self-aware best friends slash wives I know. May your marriage be filled with as much love, laughter, and ridiculous in-jokes as your friendship has been. And maybe, just maybe, a little less obliviousness."

Laughter rippled through the room, and Amanda and Mary shared another kiss, their eyes sparkling with mirth and love.

As Iris sat back down next to Mikki, she leaned over and whispered, "You know, for best friends, they make a pretty good married couple."

Iris groaned, but couldn't hide her smile. "Don't you start," she warned playfully. "Or I swear, I'll start calling our dates 'super special friendship hangouts.'"

Mikki grinned. "Sounds perfect to me."

And so, surrounded by love, laughter, and a healthy dose of friendly exasperation, Amanda and Mary began their new life together – as best friends, lovers, and partners in every sense of the word.

Some things, it seemed, never changed. But then again, when you're lucky enough to marry your best friend, why would you want them to?
