Dorothea clenched her hand open and shut experimentally, feeling slightly awkward being out of the sacred protections she usually donned everywhere. But it was just right there within her view, so she knew it was safe and secured with none daring to come close to the blessed armor in a mix of awe and respect. They wouldn't imagine it so, especially when she stood before the recruits standing at attention, many of them barely able to keep their eyes straight forward in anticipation of whatever she was about to do.
She nodded respectfully to the Drill Sergeant who returned the gesture, then stepped forward with a loud clear of her throat. "All of you present have shown considerable proficiency in your CQC drills, so much so that according to some of your instructors, you may even be getting a little too overconfident." The Lycoris Knight then visible relaxed and rolled her shoulders, sure that she was all warmed up now. "So if you're that good, let's have a little challenge. Group into teams of five, now. Pick whoever you feel like you'd work the best with."
Dorothea waited for the recruits to hurriedly obey and form their 'squads.' Then she gestured to the first group to come approach, having them halt only a few steps away. Now, it was the instructor's turn to bark the orders, giving the Brilliance Knight a brief moment to quickly study the future soldiers of House Iris. "Right, so you lot think you're hot shit?! Let a real retainer of House Iris show you how outclassed you can be, especially on the battlefield where you could encounter anything! But if you're good as they say and can take down Lady Dorothea, you all get an extra hour of sleep tonight!"
The woman amusedly noticed a determined and desperate fire light up in the recruits' eyes at that promise and they swiftly readied themselves with shifts into well-drilled hand-to-hand combat stances. She matched them and gently ignited the circuits within her legs and arms, tightly controlling how much energy was fed to the solarium within her veins. She didn't want to kill or maim these unaugmented humans, for sure.
Hence why she had stripped off her armor in the first place.
To their credit, it seemed that the boots knew that there was no reasoning behind playing fair and attacked all at once from different angles. But to Dorothea's experienced eyes that lit up with a slow blink which fueled her focus, the gaps were obvious and easily exploitable, especially with how fast her enhanced limbs reacted at the speed of her thoughts. Hands shot out and pulled with incredible strength totally unfitting for her frame, then hurled bodies over the heads of the other waiting teams to crash down into the sandpit on the other side of the field. What very few hits that actually came through were met with a sensation like punching an iron wall, the reinforced flesh easily shrugging off the attempts with laughable ease.
By the time Dorothea took another blink to mentally disengage, the first five were definitely defeated. She forced herself exhale noisily, allowing the glowing circuits to fade from her exposed arms and legs. Once she was sure that the energy had been properly recycled, she turned to address the stunned recruits. "Next. You don't have a choice to back out," She calmly added to a few that were already raising their hands in surrender.
"Absolutely!" The Drill Sergeant snapped in agreement and crossed their arms at the despairing recruits. "Take the beating now and learn that you're eventually going to be outclassed out there on the battlefield. You're going to run into tough shit out there, maybe even tougher than Lady Dorothea, and what are you going to do then? Brag about being top turd out of a pile of them? No, you're going to see the others buy time and then figure out what the fuck to do! So get thinking, real quick before it's your turn to die!"
Radana knew that the seat had been rated and checked for compatibility with an individual wearing Guardian suit, but she still held her breath anyway whilst lowering herself down into it. Once she was sure she was properly sitting, she flashed a thumbs up to the ground crew who waved back and began to back away, tugging to detach the cables connected to the aircraft. She grasped her helmet and slid it smugly on, basking for a moment in its familiar warm embrace before toggling on the communications systems with a slid of the eyes. "Testing, testing."
"Mic check cleared, I can hear you," The test pilot in front of her happily declared, speaking into a regular flight dome instead of another Guardian suit. They began to quickly flick through a variety of switches and levers that Radana could feel awaken the machine around them, made especially clear when the cockpit neatly rose up and closed over their heads. "Right, all checks cleared so far. Are you ready, Lady Radana? I'm going to start taxing."
The Camellia Knight sent an affirmative text before pausing to vocalize it too, sheepishly remembering that the pilot's equipment surely wasn't as advanced as the sacred armor of the Helmsmen. They took it in stride and soon, the prototype aircraft was rolling down the makeshift runway to line up for ignition. Radana took the brief time to go over and confirm her suit was properly linked to the jet's copilot systems, wanting to directly receive the data obtained from the flight. She knew that a certain somebody would be more than interested to have such data on hand, just in case.
Then she felt it, the moment when the powerful engines ignited. Slowly, surely, their roar grew louder and louder with every passing second with the pilot clearing the final pre-flight procedures. The moment she spied them reaching for the throttle lever, Radna sucked in a breath and subtly clenched her hands. Across her entire body, circuits lit up to quickly reinforce her body.
This proved to be handy in resisting the sudden application of G-force on her when the plane began to rapidly accelerate. She held on tightly to the seat and watched on while the pilot calmly began to pull, directing the flaps of the Witchfire Mk1 to point downwards. Bit by bit, the aircraft rose higher and higher, soon entirely off the ground to gain altitude.
Once sufficient height and speed as accomplished, the wheels were retracted while the pilot happily reported a successful takeoff. Only now did Radana release her breath, feeling completely fine in body thanks to her armor's sealed systems, but still she could feel her head spinning, especially when she glanced to the side and saw the crimson background of Andernia IV staring back.
After a moment to settle down, she nodded and told the pilot one thing. "Go through whatever trials you normally do. I'm interested to see how it all goes."
1st Andernian Guard has been recruited in Pendragon.
In hindsight, perhaps trying to slyly find an alternative guest speaker at the induction event for the 1st Andernian Guards wasn't such a good idea. You admittedly had been rather desperate, trying to figure out a way to weasel your way out of needing to give a public speech that surely would be recorded in the annals of the unit's history. Perhaps just showing your face in the background would be enough, as uncomfortable as that already was to you. You had even managed to trim it down to just a single battalion, the Royals of 1st Andernian Guard.
But then, when you watched in dismay at Kat fumbling with her prepared speech, her full nervous mannerisms on display, you knew one of two things could happen. The first was that you committed to this and allowed the Hyacinth Prism onto the podium, where she'd likely drop dead of a panic attack midway through her stutters, thus commemorating the momentous occasion with already a death on their hands. Surely nothing but a good omen, said nobody.
Or you could go up there yourself, without any sort of prepared speech or talk to the newly trained soldiers.
...there really was only one choice, damn your bleeding heart. Kat nearly broke out in a cold sweat at the sensation of your hand touching her head, only to very minutely relax at the gentle sensation. "Relax. I'll handle this," You promised, all smiles on the outside and all dread within. She numbly nodded and watched you step past the confused organizers for the stage, where you immediately drew the attention of both attending soldiers and civilians alike.
There was a quick bark from the newly appointed commander and all of the 1st Andernian Guard snapped to prompt attention. They paid no heed to the flashing cameras coming from the attending press and family, their gazes locked firmly on you approaching the microphone. You could feel the weight of their muted expectations buried beneath the layers of freshly drilled discipline, a mix of eagerness mixed with trepidation at whatever graves you could order them to dig.
Though to be fair, perhaps it was going to yours as you stared out, mind churning to try and come up with something to say. Anything really that could perhaps constitute of something a little more than just boilerplate flattery, which surely would disrespect the incredible efforts these patriots had already gone through. They had sweated, they had trained, they had burned to perfection for this moment-!
Or at least near-perfection when your searching eyes happened to fall on a very apparent mistake one of the troops had unfortunately overlooked. It was so noticeable that you couldn't help but voice it aloud, your voice carrying through the scene clearly and loudly. "Private Wells. Your helmet strap is undone."
The resulting surprise from that casual mention was actually enough to shock the soldiers out of their statuesque stoicism, aided when the aforementioned recruit broke discipline and let out a loud curse while frantically fumbling with their gear. More than a few snickers broke out, some of them even having a slight mocking note to them as if boasting they were so much better. It only added to the embarrassment of the exposed trooper then, who looked like they were about to faint from being so singled out.
Then you continued to speak, a slight disapproving note in your voice. "Private First Class Liu. Private Maddison. Corporal Tiber. What's so funny? Do you think you would never make a mistake like that?" You dared with a frown. "Are you so perfect that you have surpassed your fellow human? Please, step up if you are so, I believe we may have to correct a few forms then."
The ill-mannered snicking very quickly stopped at your direct naming, the identified soldiers all rapidly paling and trying their best to shrink under the gaze of their disapproving colleagues and superiors. You had words for the latter as well, turning to face the individual who led that section. "Captain Weiss. I expect better, especially as you must take responsibility for those under your command."
The officer blanched and looked ready to throw themselves at your feet to beg for forgiveness. Yet at your next words, they and all the others froze, even the press audience. "Which means ultimately, it is also a failing on my part, being the authority in charge of you all." You looked out over the now enthralled listeners, carefully choosing your next few words. "As a daughter of House Iris, there is no higher power for me to pass such responsibility to then. Your glories are mine. Your mistakes are mine. I share my luck with you, for good or ill.
"Yet in the same vein then, you share my dreams and desires, that which promises a better tomorrow than today. And now, you are all armed and equipped to carry out these oaths that we share, that we wield power in the name of those we protect." Backs straightened up and chins were lifted higher, with both pride and understanding of their duty. "It would be better if all we loved was always safe and secure no matter what. But such peaceful times unfortunately do not come without effort, on both my part and yours. I will do my best to then ensure that such peace are always welcomed reprieves, but for when such must be fought for, I ask only one thing: are you prepared to do your part?
"Are you, the 1st Andernian Guard, truly ready to fight for House Iris?"
There was a single loud resounding cheer that answered your question and you put on your best smile, stepping away from the podium. With a snap of your hand to your chest, like you were holding up the flat side of a blade to your face, you saluted your new soldiers and they responded in kind with perfect synchronicity. You held it for a few moments before giving a single wave that had the audience cheering while the troops held their salute, only finally dropping the stance once you were fully off the stage. From there, the officers went through and dismissed their subordinates to partake in well-earned leave, to spend some much needed time off after all the training before returning back to military life.
Kat met you with wide eyes filled with amazement. "T-that was...incredible!" She gushed and you coughed, trying your best to hide your embarrassed cheeks. "Better that what I-I had! You set it up...perfectly!"
"Set up?" You asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You...those s-soldiers, they did it at your orders. R-right?" She repeated expectantly and you confusedly blinked. "Y-you knew all their...names."
"Well, of course I did," You replied with a frown, genuine confusion in your voice. "It's only a battalion of names and faces. It's not like I had to memorize the entire regiment."
Kat's jaw dropped and you idly wondered if there was something the matter before shaking your head. Better to not press any further and just retire to your office to relax. Honestly, a battalion of names was nothing compared to all the information you had to collect, process, and refine for your schemes and conspiracies in the shadows. Was it really so unusual?
Once sufficient height and speed as accomplished, the wheels were retracted while the pilot happily reported a successful takeoff. Only now did Radana release her breath, feeling completely fine in body thanks to her armor's sealed systems, but still she could feel her head spinning, especially when she glanced to the side and saw the crimson background of Andernia IV staring back.
You didn't go into a lot of detail about what Andernia IV looked like, or how the vista affected Radana, but this was somehow still a very powerful image. The rest of the scene was built so well, I think, that this final piece - the view from the upper atmosphere - is something the mind just fills in for you, even more so than normal. Cosmic.
This scene was very cool overall, but I particularly appreciated this section on what someone is like when they're boosting Solarium. It's always nice to see something uniquely of the Helmsmen. I am very curious if it will be possible to eventually have a regiment (or even just a battalion) of knights. Bloody terrifying in CQC, I have no doubt. Maybe they would be an optional upgrade for normal units as well? "Knight-commanders", just a general boost to the unit due to their enhancements plus a particular buff to CQC?
"Yet in the same vein then, you share my dreams and desires, that which promises a better tomorrow than today. And now, you are all armed and equipped to carry out these oaths that we share, that we wield power in the name of those we protect." Backs straightened up and chins were lifted higher, with both pride and understanding of their duty. "It would be better if all we loved was always safe and secure no matter what. I will do my best to then ensure that such peace are always welcomed reprieves, but for when such must be fought for, I ask only one thing: are you prepared to do your part?"
With no word of exaggeration, this whole scene is some of the best character writing I've seen. At least for a long time. The whole scene is just so perfectly Violet. It's genuinely inspiring too. I can't wait to see who this little flower will become in the future, but I'm very happy we get to read about her now.
Just... a really great update Celeshiro.
In regards to the plans, they all went pretty well! Despite my assumptions, we did actually need Kat to finish the 1st this turn. With them all ready next cycle we'll be in a relatively good spot to rush down the 2nd with Dorothea and Violet, have Radana reach out diplomatically, and get Kat started on designing the ship ship ships. Assuming nothing unforeseen occurs, of course.
So I'm not very experienced at writing and I'm not entirely sure if there's a naming convention for the setting or not so I just used numbers, but I needed to get this out of my head.
...We were absolutely screwed, but we had to try anyways. We huddled up, made our plan, and set into motion. I went first, charging wildly at Dorothea. As expected she pulled me to the ground with my own momentum. Two, Three, Four, and Five slowly approached, maintaining careful stances and trying to look slightly annoyed at me for charging in. The second any of them got close they'd be defeated, so they focused on dodging. Unfortunately it still wasn't too long before they started getting knocked to the ground. As we lay on the floor and didn't move to get up, our opponent was satisfied we were defeated and started powering down her circuits. We could never have beat her like that, with those circuits she could defend from anything via brute force if she needed to. So we didn't try. As she powered down and collected herself once again, she was briefly focused inwards, confident that the fight was over. That's why she didn't notice me getting up to tackle her. As I jumped on her, sending her falling I let out a war cry. As my teammates readied to join me and she was falling down towards the ground, her circuits flared to life. She easily caught herself on her way down. I don't remember exactly what happened next. It was a blur and the force with which I hit the floor did not help anything. My teammates were groaning on the floor next to me. Huh, guess she didn't want any of us behind her again. Not that she had to worry. We were all dazed from how hard we hit the ground. Our opponent had not shown so much mercy this time, but I did think I heard her say something about a good attempt. We definitely didn't win the fight, but we did much better than we were expecting. I think we were all silently proud of, and at the same time regretting, our plan.
You very pointedly closed the various news articles covering the commissioning event of the 1st Andernian Guard and squeezed your eyes shut, trying to avoid the overwhelming urge to curl into a ball to hide from all the attention being thrown your way. As it had turned out, your improvised speech had been quite eye-catching. Too much so for your personal preference.
Almost every single media outlet that reported on your speech came with personal editorials praising you, singing praise so unabashedly positively that skeptics could easily think it were organized or orchestrated for pure propaganda. Yet even those who half-joked it so on the digital forums always came with the admittance that were it simply a public stunt, they would still readily embrace it so regardless. Such was the power they attributed to the words coming from your mouth.
Goodness, now your face was truly bright red and you lightly pressed your palms against your cheeks to try to hide them, even if nobody else was in the office. All your subordinates had their own activities, including Radana who apparently was overseeing the last of the Witchfire trials. It left you some very rare alone time to soak and process in the public reception of your actions without any sort of reassurance or teasing from your best friend, both of which were usually very welcomed distractions to help take your mind off things. The less you were noticed, the more you liked it!
You finally let out a haggard half-scream, half-sigh and slumped in your chair. Almost against your will, your hand shakily reached up and reopened one of the articles, the video of the speech immediately auto-playing upon successful load. You morosely watched from your horrid posture, eyes glued entirely to the facade of a Solar Princess exuding confidence she surely should not possess. Not with how her greatest desire was to remain the unseen shadow behind the throne, the one who idly tugged on strings to put on the illusion of freedom for the masses. A dramatic grand play of drama and intrigue, one that pushed the audience to their seat's edge with bated breath, wondering and hoping it would all resolve itself somehow...and it did. Because there was no real stakes.
Because you were there to twist and pull things back into place, always completely in control with a quiet confidence you knew what you were doing. Just like what both my parents always could do.
The captured video finally came to an end and you closed your eyes, stewing in the silence that followed and the thoughts bouncing around your head. This...you could still recover the hand off to your sister perhaps, but the idea of simply vanishing was definitely not going to happen. Not after all the attention now being driven your way from your actions and you had to come to terms with that.
It certainly wasn't what you wanted and it definitely would make moving in the shadows just a tad bit harder. You'd have to put in a little more extra work to help distance yourself from being the direct source of your schemes, but it wasn't impossible. You had already done so with establishing Dorothea as an intermediary spymaster, who played her role to a tee and never knew you didn't necessarily need her to keep you in the loop. She was another face to help shield yours from being immediately linked back to, a useful one that wasn't aware of the greater implications at play, only the duty that was at hand.
Sometimes, I don't understand what you ask me to do. But I do it anyway because I trust you.
And it goes both ways, as there are none other that I could entrust with this. Go, my Iron Flower.
Very well. Violet, be good until I return.
Old memories that you gently avoided submerging in by opening your eyes. "Right," You murmured and shifted about, fixing your posture. "No time to think about that. Time to perhaps organize some...insurance in case trusting my sister doesn't work out. Stars, I hope I don't need to use this."

Right I binged the quest, and it seems like the Solar King set things up such that he has the means to build a loyal foundation to respond to a probable rebellion lead by his children in Helm. Since the colonists are comprised of a lot of retired veterans, he has means to shut down communication thus insuring the outcome of his son having a go at him remains uncertain to Helm, and a harmless* heiress to make use of the Solarium Codex should the worst come to pass.

Let's roll.
*Well technically he wasn't certain of this, and merely infer it from the fact that Violet used her abilities to scheme for something harmless like insuring the desert is the same thing for multiple weeks in a row.
Lets begin the end of the beginning. We've mostly maxed out everything else we can do on current resources, we got a combat roster of proper combat destroyers and infantry versus converted arkships and levy-thugs. We are facing problem with airpower, they got planes and we still need factories for ours, but our infantry have AA missiles.
As someone who primary goes through these stories on a TTS, I find it hilarious that this typically gets read out sounding a lot like "Licorice Knight".
