As a matter of total curiosity that has nothing to do with me picking up an old hobby I haven't done in a while, do people prefer the flower or solarium motif more? Particularly when it comes to actual aesthetic modeling....

I would say I prefer the flower motif best. There's nothing wrong with the solarium, but the flower feels more unique. Especially as it's (partially) specific to you as an author, with working well with another of your Quests.

The production supervisor nervously checked the inventory again and winced. "Are you sure that we've talked to all our suppliers?" They asked with a worried tone. "All of them?"

"We've gone through the entire list, twice," The delivery manager grunted and held up their hands. "Trust me, we're shocked like you that they're just all...out of the part! Maybe some competitor swooped in and offered them better contracts?"

"It's not impossible, but why would they swap- never mind, it doesn't matter." The supervisor groaned and whacked the data pad. "What matters now is that we have to find an alternative source, and fast! Our clients' deadlines aren't going to budge, especially the government contract!"

The manager grimly agreed, then blinked when something came to mind. "I...think I know an alternative. There's a smaller facility on the outskirts I remember hearing some folks chatting about just last night, it only recently opened up from a federal grant. If we could convince them to retool their machinery and build infrastructure to them, that could work."

The lifeline was seized for what it was. "I'll talk to the higher ups then, see if they're willing to do some outreach programs. Meanwhile, I need you to drive over there and buy up all we need!"

"Got it. Have to say, what a strange but fortunate turn of events..."

Please be sure to keep an eye on this constantly updating list of prohibited substances, and politely inform trader if their products exceed the allowed tolerance of these items."

A hand rose up, followed by a question from the gathered crowd training to be New Helm's first merchandise inspectors. "What if they insist otherwise?"

"Then you call the Brilliance Knights and we will arrive to handle the situation," She coolly answered with a measured nod. "In case they turn unruly, for the most extreme cases, the Lycoris Knights will not hesitate in enforcing a temporary detainment to maintain the peace. That is our oath, after all."

Kat's face scrunched up and she pulled at her boot with her hands, straining to get it free. After a moment, her leg finally was freed and she continued to awkwardly waddle through the thick snowdrift. She was not alone, as many others too struggled in their trudge through the rough terrain. The Hyacinth Prism still couldn't quite believe that there was this much snowfall already, especially given that the roads beneath all that frozen water had only been finished not too long ago.

It was certainly an unexpected challenge, but Kat wasn't too worried. If anything, she simply set her shoulders and continued to walk on in spite of the difficulty. She had faith that the denizens of the newly christened Pendragon would adapt and overcome this, or simply make it part of their daily lives. Whichever they decided on preferring, and if they really needed it, there was always the wisdom of the Prisms to offer counsel and wisdom to the problem.

Preferably in a nice well-regulated room somewhere.

Said well-regulated room temperature greeted her when she finally made it to her destination and Kat let out a pleased groan in the warmth of the basic spaceport. It wasn't anything fancy, being more like an engineering bay than landing pad, but it was where all the building supplies and temporary workers had been flowing in and out of. Now with the urban infrastructure complete and linking together all the previously isolated settlements, the place was mostly empty save a few shuttles scheduled to depart for New Helm in the near future.

Kat was already looking forward to it, almost hearing the sweet welcoming call of her personal workshop. She was more than eager to get started on whatever next design project House Iris deemed important, a dizzying amount of ideas and concepts floating about in her head. Or perhaps she should be there to help in building the first dockyards?

"So much shit to do, so little bullshit I can put up with," She growled aloud and furiously shook her body about to get rid of any loose snow. Her tongue was already that much looser than the frozen block it had been before stepping through into the soothing surroundings of an engineering space. "I swear, if those idiots somehow manage to somehow fuck up my blueprints, I'll crack their skulls open and see about trying to fix whatever's actually in there."

"How crude. I would think offering more constructive criticism would be much more effective, don't you think?" With a snort, Kat turned to face Radana pouring out some hot tea. "But it is your area of expertise, so I defer to your judgment."

"Damn right. Believe me, when they're fresh out of training, they think they're hot shit but don't have a single thing to back it up with!" She snatched the offered cup and drank greedily, licking her lips while the heated liquid warmed her insides. "Even the old farts can fall into it as well when there's not much pushback. So, you have to tell it to them straight when they're speaking with their arse instead of their head."

"I see." Radana still was calm even in the face of such vulgar and crude language, perhaps a measure of her elegant etiquette in play. Or perhaps it was the rather excellent refreshment, a very welcome treat on this frozen planet. She certainly was enjoying the drink for what it was, especially after having finalized all the setup paperwork for Pendragon. Soon, the city should be able to self-govern its day to day activities, leaving House Iris to focus on more grander and pressing manners.

Indeed, the Camellia Knight's gaze drifted to a particular set of folders that she was planning to bring physically back to New Helm. Kat followed the look and snarled at the sight of them. She knew what was recorded in them, having been on the scene for some of these incidents. "That bitch," She hissed and reached for her weapon. "Why, I ought to-"

"Please, control yourself." Radana flatly commanded with sharp eyes. "Rest assured that in due time, this...disgrace to House Iris will be taken care of. Corrections will be made."

"Going to be a hell of a correction to make up for some of this shit." Still, the Hyacinth Prism's stance loosened somewhat. "But I trust Her Highness. She's got a good bleeding heart when it matters."

To that, all the Brilliance Knight could do was smile. "Yes. She'll make the right choice in the end."

Nice update! I figured have the security specialist in charge of the spaceport construction would lead somewhere to what you wrote. Glad to see it. Interested in seeing what report we have coming. I'm assuming with our spy network up we will regularly get updates on what's going on with our rival.

Your head slammed against your desk and a low groan came out from your lips. "Goddammit, woman. Stop making this messier than it already is!" You fumed. "All you have to do is just sit pretty and let me get everything nice and orderly before the handover. You literally have a clean shot to power, and all this is doing is delaying the process while I'm putting out fires in your wake!"

"Almost literally," Radana dryly mentioned, then pressed her lips thinly together. "How disgraceful for a Solar Princess to sink to such distasteful means to obtain what she desires. Your sister lazes about yet lusts for what we have, and thus commits acts most unbecoming for a daughter of His Late Highness."

You had to agree with the idea that if your sire was still around, he'd likely be disappointed in the chosen method that your sister had taken for building up her own forces. It appeared that with the sight of your new ship design going around, your sister had seemingly decided that she would not be left behind when it came to her own armed forces. But instead of trying to do something like turning all her current accumulated wealth into proper industrial development, once again it appeared that the most cost-cutting strategy was taken.

Namely, why build an arms industry when there's an easy stockpile within reach in the private sector?

It had long since practically enshrined by common galactic law that private ownership of small arms was citizen's right, especially given the possible width of space between one's homestead and the closest law enforcement. More importantly, militias of well-meaning volunteers wanting to help in defending their planet was a common phenomena that most quietly wished to maintain, if only to help reduce how many of their own house troops had to be tasked with garrison duty. As such, it had become a general assumption and unremarked sight for most to have at least some form of self-defense on them, especially outside the cities.

Yet your sister was clever enough to look past such common sights and focus on the overlooked detail, that there was a clear stockpile of guns already there. It couldn't be much and neither was the quality likely uniform or significant, as most military hardware would still be firmly in the hand of house armies. But there could be old hand me downs, looted trophies, or grandfathered weapons which could be put in people loyal to her. You had to admit, it was shockingly clever of her, especially when she prettily dressed it up as a 'measure to improve public safety.'

Just that whatever argument for or against the practicality of such a decision immediately was invalidated when she didn't take 'no' for an answer. The reports that Radana and Kat had gathered while founding Pendragon on Andernia II had shown that while some of those isolated settlements quietly went along, many were rightfully outraged at this declaration without offer for rebuttal. It was seen as a tyrannical decision and so they loudly refused. For the larger settlements, the response from your sister's collection officers was a 'you'll soon regret this.'

But for a select chosen smaller towns and homesteads, regret was much more immediate. They would come back later in the dead of night, this time with their commissioned enforcers, and then proceed with 'legal seizure' of the privately owned weapons. Any form of resistance was swiftly crushed when the cloaked Brilliance Knights under your sister showed no mercy, using their circuits alone to overpower the surprised fighters. They showed no restraint, leaving behind broken bodies and destroyed homes after they took what they wanted, perhaps with a few extra kicks for good measure.

The only reason why this hadn't immediately spread like wildfire and escalated into a full-scale demand of justice was that there were so few survivors of these rare attacks willing to speak out. Not helped was the fact that your sister's agents wore the crest of House Iris, so these witness accounts were only acquired with gentle encouragement and reassurance from your best friend working her expertise. Even then, they apparently wanted to speak no further on the topic after all was said and done, trying so hard to move past the traumatic experience to rebuild their lives.

Now Radana gave you an expecting look, one that you were very familiar with. You raised your head and rolled your shoulders, warming up your arm before warming up the touch interface in your desk. "Right. First things first, we need to put out a public notice to have our people be on guard at all times, especially if they are 'honored' with a visit from dearest sister. Hm, let's disguise it as an uptick in recent crime rates from ongoing difficulties.

"Next, an allocation of funds to help those affected." Your fingers swiped rapidly and you didn't even blink when you earmarked some of your own personal funds for said purpose. "This time, I think a stimulus check is a good cover-up. Totally 'randomly' issued out, perhaps with an acceptance condition to move to Pendragon. Oh, that'll be quite handy."

"It does sound quite beneficial for all involved. People looking for a new path in life, and a city filled with untapped potential." Your friend paused, her eyebrow raising slightly up. "But what of your sister? Will you be bringing her to justice over this?"

You grunted and leaned back, drumming your fingers against the digital screen. After a moment, you let out a frustrated sigh. "I wish damn well I could, but then we'd be the ones inciting the chaos. Damn her for using the House Iris crest for this, it muddies the waters too much. Rest assured that I will be having many words for her when we meet again, but for now, unless we're truly ready, then it's best to leave her be."

The Camellia Knight frowned and crossed her arms. "Surely there must be something we can do," She mumbled, clearly trying to think of a method herself. "Some sort of public rebuttal or declaration that we do not condone this. That this isn't official."

You perked up at her words, an idea springing to mind. Quickly, your fingers returned to the first warning and hastily added to it. "Here we go, a warning that bandits may have stolen official codes and crests, necessitating a total overhaul! That we will need to redesign and reissue all said badges and authorizations as needed." You grinned and dusted your hands, satisfied with this.

"That's...actually really clever," Radana honestly praised with a satisfied smile. "I do worry it's a bit of an overreach of power though, but I'm sure you have a plan for it."

"Of course!" You scoffed and rolled your eyes, though you had to admit you were somewhat tempted. After all, by being the one to redo all these issuing authorities, you effectively could seize total control over the higher administration levels. Even if the First Princess back on Helm were to then try to approach, her own authority and access could then be rejected by your new structure.

But you weren't going to go that extreme, of course! Maybe just a few casual information plants here and there, some bureaucracy pipelines adjusted to have more immediate information directly flowing into your office for more...opportunities. All temporary, of course, and easily adjustable once you managed to talk sense into your sister to bring her into power.

Yes, you were sure now that your grand conspiracy was still holding up. A little bumpier for now, but so long as the cover-ups held up well, it'd be smooth sailing. Why, you could even perhaps justify more buildup with those strawhat criminals and the populace would accept it in the name of their own safety! You rubbed your hands eagerly, seeing the opportunity to earn a bigger golden parachute when your sister beheld all the work she indebted to you for, especially when compared to her likely shoddier forces. Honestly, you didn't expect whatever she was cooking to measure up anywhere near to whatever you eventually came up with.

Still though, perhaps a peak wouldn't hurt if you were that curious.

- As a little heads up, I'm cooking up a new and better spy/intrigue system. It's still going to involve infiltrating cells/agents in, but instead of just a flat 'time the unrest,' it'll be more like deciding on what type of spies you insert in, something like balancing between focusing between influencing discontent populace and secret bureaucratic spying. I hadn't intended for it to be this deep, but with how Violet's been built for shadowcraft, feels only appropriate I give it more interesting mechanics than random dice roll timing. The replacement will come into play once you deal with your sister and as such, until then, I'll be giving a bonus to most intrigue actions against her while you work with the old system.
- Remember to keep an eye on your building limit per city if you're going to do any building this turn.

So-- I feel like thematically speaking, this would be a good time to do the outfit-troops action while we're also overhauling all of the authorisation codes/crests? Because then we can incorporate said Infantry into the very basis/command structure of this new system from the get-go while also going through with the measures being raised in response to 'bandits.'

This also 'just so happens' to secure a monopoly of force for her. Cause while circuits are a thing as was shown, she needed baseline humans to deal with the number of problems she's creating for herself.

At the very least you don't go full dictatorship in a system that already legitimizes your rule.

I do agree that now seems like the time to outfit an infantry regiment. Perhaps combined with spying on her actual military capabilities? Or maybe we should leave spying off for another cycle or two and really rush our development. It feels wrong to not have at least one intrigue project running at a time though. We don't know what opportunities we're missing if we're not looking properly.

There is something in me that really wants to max out our number of cities as soon as possible, even if I know there isn't really a benefit to it ncessarily. It is at least a much more action-efficient way of improving our industry compared to developing them. In terms of security it seems wisest to "fill" all the planets we've already claimed so as to minimise our defensive spread, but having one city on each planet also gives us a foothold against our sisters expansion. In terms of our character's thought processes it will also give any potential dissidents or refugees from our sisters repression a way to easily take shelter with us and help us keep an eye on events across the system.

A couple of questions: It doesn't seem necessary yet but is "counter-espionage" or investigating elements within our own society an option for intrigue? Additionally do we need to build something that can house regiments before we build them or do we get military housing from cities?

I have been really really enjoying this quest and I am looking forward to joining in! Something about sci-fantasy settings is so interesting and it's kind of nice to play a "good" character- particularly since she presents herself as kind of an anti-hero. Honestly most of our crew are charmingly anti-social in some way or another. It makes their dedication to their cause, even if it involves putting themselves into social situations they're very uncomfortable with, all the more appreciated. Thank whatever ideoligion we follow that Radana's on the team - and the closest confidant.

It will eventually be an option in the new system, but how it'll work is that it's also going to be focusing on either reassuring the populace to avoid discontent, or doing security audits in your bureaucracy to flush out attempted spying. You could theoretically take the action every turn if you wanted, but you wouldn't have guarantees that there's actually something going on. It's all part of the game of reasonable suspicion vs unnecessary paranoia.

You'll need to build housing for them like the others, notice how that it's actually mentioned that the Fleet Port has room for regiments and air wings. This does not include militia which can be spawned depending on how you want to allocate your campaign rolls if you get into a conflict.

The specific buildings should be opened once the designs are finalized, like how you unlocked the first naval buildings once you got the Wisteria-class all fluffed up.

When added together with our commercial dock completing this turn, this *is* going to dip our wealth stat two points below twenty - effectively reducing our bonus to all rolls by one. However building our wealth back up again takes four (4!) progress in a stewardship action. We have to build the drydock anyways if we want to start building an actual fleet, and I value that capability more than an extra two points of wealth. As for the infantry, unfortunately all of our options (and desires) at the moment are learning, stewardship, or intrigue based; none of which Radana excels at. She's a pretty good spy-mistress but we have two other options which are both noticeably better.

I wanted to keep Kat and Iris free as they are essentially our most valuable pieces at the moment. It's true Radana will be invaluable in any kind of diplomatic crisis but that's an option I will personally risk at the moment. I do believe we should develop our networks on our sister further next cycle, but Iris is the best pick for that by a long shot. It may also be valuable to pop Kat onto building the bank post so that we can get back up to max wealth.

Also we are already finishing a commercial dock this turn. The military buffs are useful but commercial docks are unfortunately otherwise useless without any drydocks to start building ships. At least from a purely mechanical perspective.
