You're not reading the full verse.

So, 'Believe' is actually the signature of the poem and the SL use it in a fashion similar to practice but when they do so it costs their lives so it is a last resort, hence the hate!

...I really need to catch up with this quest so I can make actual guesses that make sence.

No, I get that part: it seems pretty clear that the Shiplords are trying, by repeatedly grinding Tribute races into near-extinction, to spur those races to transcend the demands of the Darwinian struggle for survival, which is likely a prerequisite to becoming Uninvolved. I just find it striking that, at least in Humanity (and the people of this thread), they are having the exact opposite effect, of spurring innovation and the desire for discovering new weapons and Secrets, of accomplishing the exact opposite of what their stated aim is. The unification of Humanity, thanks to Amanda's efforts and Practice's Web of Dream, is only increasing the general resolve: Humanity is less likely to become Uninvolved than ever, and continues to become more so every time the Shiplords increase the pressure.

Or the poem is placed where it is to make you come to this conclusion, where the SLs true goal is to accelerate the development of tribute races to become Uninvolved, because a) Uninvolved take care about spooky stuff and b) Uninvolved don't pose a danger to the SL.

The SL have been playing this game for at least a million years, IIRC.

Soo...

Have Amanda and Mary been physically described at any point? That is to say-- long hair? Short hair? Eye/hair/skin color? That sort of thing. I'd like to know. For... science.

:turian:Science :turian:

Suuuuure.

Amanda, as was voted waaay back at the start of the quest, is a blue-eyed blonde - I see her as a more golden blonde than an icy one. Fair skinned, but the colour is quite warm. Wears her hair around her shoulders.

Mary is a brunette with green eyes. Very soft hair, both to look at and in physical reality. About parity in height with Amanda, maybe a little taller. Paler skin tones. Has longer hair than Amanda, but keeps it tied back most of the time given her profession.

On an unrelated note, it looks like we're getting closer to proving that P isn't equal to NP.

Which is to be expected, but still exciting. Also, y'know, something which would have immediately catapulted this quest beyond any possible degree of existence, should you have gone with the opposite. :p

So, about this "P=NP" thing...

Polynomial hierarchies are delicious, sis! You can't just collapse them arbitrarily!

Fair enough...

Mini-turn: Ministerial Matters - Part 1
The final part of your work for the year took place all across it, scattered between the larger meetings and social affairs that dominated your schedule. Choosing to step down had bought you freedom for a time, but it left others facing an uncertain future. Six men and women had led Earth through the fire beside you, becoming far more than just your Ministers over the last thirteen years. Many credited you for your leadership, but you knew the truth; that you'd never have been able to do so much alone. And you weren't going to leave the ones who helped you to find their futures alone.

Vega, Kazuki, Adriana and Mary were the ones you were able to see this year, but you promised yourself that you'd find time to talk to Lina and Marcus come the next. You asked what they wanted to do with their future, even if in Mary's case you knew most of it, and how you might help them realise the vision in their mind. In two cases, you had to work surprisingly hard to convince them to accept your help, but you got there in the end. Of course, that just left you with options, and it wasn't like you could do everything.

Daughter of Secrets, Sister of Truth

Your closest friend, Mary had been surprised by your choice to pursue research over returning to the government in some capacity after your sabbatical; but not unpleasantly so. Arcadia had been a dream of hers and those like her since before she brought them together in her Ministry, and it was clear when she talked about it that all of them were ecstatic at the prospect. Thanks in part to your 'babysitting' earlier in the year, which ended up not being a one-time thing, Iris had chosen to come with you as well, and you'd breathed a quiet sigh of relief when the VI for the Science Ministry came out so well.

With Arcadia in good hands, you'd wondered what you might be able to do to help your friend, as it was clearly what she wanted to follow you into, which is when she surprised you. For all her quiet charm, as you liked to call it, Mary lacked the true gift with words that you possessed, and she wanted help finding some candidates for the Ministership, and then convincing them to consider an offer if it came. She knew she'd be offered the position again, she always was, and this would be a way to deflect it gracefully.

With Iris's rapid growth, which you're at least half responsible for, Mary also raised the possibility of spending more time with the youthful AI. You'd done similar things in the past, but never around the duties of president, and it's quite possible that it'll impact your own schedule. The benefits of doing so are hazy at present, but Mary wouldn't suggest something if it didn't have a use.

The Diligent Steward

Adriana had been the Minister you'd worked with the most in the early years of your Presidency, piecing together the vast infrastructure required to construct the FSN, and to give humanity a foundation to build upon after the battle was won. A brilliant designer in her own right, she pioneered the creation of entirely new tools to support the Ministries, but her true value had been as an organiser. It was a skill that she'd only discovered in full in the early years of her duties as Minister for the Home Office, but also one she'd excelled at.

Her drive to complete the digital revolution stalled by the discovery of the Second Secret, and all but forgotten after the Week of Sorrows, has won her praise but also some wariness. People are quite comfortable with the advanced replicant agents, but Adriana wants to go much further. Of course, to do so she'll have to hold onto her position, which apparently will be harder than you thought, but you have some unique ability to help with that.

Adriana herself would be content with holding her position, or even yielding it to take control of the Home Office department that deals with digital integration; she sees the latter as the more likely without support. A few words in the right ears, however, and it could become incredibly difficult for her not to be offered the role again. The main issue is how deeply she wants to intertwine human and electronic life, which surprisingly disturbs quite a few, despite the nanomachines swimming in their veins courtesy of Prologue.

A Ministership is one thing, but it's not the only thing you could offer. Adriana's family has presence within several sections of the government, and between that and your own extraordinary influence, you could give your Minister a chance at the Presidency itself. She'll need some convincing, given how close she's been to the centre of power and having seen how that affects someone, but probably not too much of it. Of course, you'll have to dedicate some time to the matter next year, but your State Department can help you with that if you choose to pursue it.

There's another matter she's asks for help with though, relating to her desire to bring humanity closer to its electronic creations. Completing the digital revolution, and preparing humanity for what might lie ahead if they are to defeat the Shiplords. You can't make that happen with a few words, or a broadcast, but you can give your friend one hell of a start.

Proven Miracles

You had to work a lot harder than you'd expected to convince Vega to accept your help, and you were never quite sure of the source of her resistance. The idea that you'd given her enough already, perhaps, but when Kagiso was quite willing to tell her that she was being silly, it was hard for her to maintain the front.

In the end, she had several matters you could help her with. She didn't want to continue as a Minister, and in truth you could understand that. Her greatest gifts to humanity had never come from her ability in that regard, but the Miracles her Focus had brought forth. With the Harmonic Record complete, she wanted to use it. She was confident in her ability to step down into a less involved position within the Ministry of Practice to pursue that goal, but as with Adriana, your own influence could make it a certainty.

Linked to this was a desire to form a true Harmonic Circle, and though she was certainly far closer to that than she'd ever been, she needed Potentials who would be willing to sink years into the matter to become true specialists. The Unisonbound, for all that they could cheat towards that goal, weren't viable for the sort of overarching focus that that required. If you helped her put something like that together, it would take far less time, and might also give you more direct access to it as leader of the Arcadia Institute.

Finally, there was a more personal request; for you to find time whilst still President to work with her on the Harmonic Record. When you stepped down, although you wouldn't lose your connection to Vega due to your place among the Unisonbound, her duties might draw her more forcefully from helping you. This was something that could help both of you, and she almost didn't ask given how it would monopolise use of the Archive. But if you could help her understand the links she'd formed almost without thought between the Unisonbound, what else might be possible?

World's Melody

If you helped give back the world's voice, it was Kazuki who taught it how to sing again. Without him, bringing the world together to what it was now could have been almost impossible. Like all your Ministers, he was forced to grow quickly into the new position, but he rose to the challenge. Even when he had the chance to step down after the Tribute Fleet was defeated, he saw your Presidency through to the end. You'd expected his resistance; a mark of the professional pride that had impressed you enough that you named him a Minister. Forewarned was forearmed, however, and for all his gifts as a musician and public speaker, you were indisputably his superior in battle of words.

He had only two requests, one for now and another for the future. Although he certainly didn't lack charm he'd appreciate some help locating some proper replacements to pass on to the next President. Easily enough done, given your access to the Circles, and a task you couldn't find any fault in pursuing.

For the future, however, he asked a simple thing; that you would return to the stage beside him for one last concert during the years of your sabbatical. It could have been about your influence, and the publicity you both knew it would bring such an event, but that would have been doing him a disservice. You'd learnt a huge amount of the performer's trade from him, and it had been together that you'd woven a song of unity so deeply into the fabric of the world. Another opportunity to do so was hard to resist.

This is a ranked vote, please number low to high by preference. The top six choices will be the ones that Amanda chooses to pursue. Write-in's are welcome, tag me as usual if you have one. Questions, as always, are welcome.

There will be a seven hour moratorium on this vote.

The Adriana's part seems to be cut off, and I am not sure which options for her are which, the names of the options are not clear, at least for me.

Fixed the cutoff - seriously, what the heck happened there? - and the options go in order for the descriptive entries. So Tradition in Service would be to support Adriana continuing as a Minister, whilst Chosen Successor would be convincing her to make a run for the Presidency - and throwing your weight behind it.

Some rolls will be involved depending on your choices, and there will be varying effects on personal futures depending on what you support. I would advise picking an option from each Minister, but you're quite free to specialise if you wish.

Geez, we're stealing Iris, Mary, and the Ministerial VI? At this point, we pretty much are the Science Ministry, aren't we? All the bureaucrats will have left is just enough resources to do basic integration testing of our discoveries!

Snowfire, do we number the votes 1-10, or is it 1-2/3 and the six with the most '1' votes win?
If it's the later, I think you can do it by using [TASK] voting; otherwise they'll just default to being a single list. But this suggests that we're supposed to number 1-10, with the top 6 as the ones we pursue:

And, ugh, why do you have these going live on a Tuesday? Ugh, I'm going to be working/going to school for 18 hours tomorrow. I'll still try to participate in the discussion, but probably won't have much time to get in-depth until Wednesday.

@Snowfire maybe this is already going on behind the scene or is too late or simply not something you want to deal with in terms of voting but what about instead of purely "amanda helps her ministers" theres also some "amanda and her ministers help eachother"

Pretty sure the only reason Amanda even has four Personal Actions this year is because her ministers have been pulling a bunch of extra weight.

Okay, vote roundup and quick thoughts:

[] Mary – Convincing Candidates
[] Mary – Minding Iris

[] Adriana – Tradition in Service
[] Adriana – Chosen Successor
[] Adriana – The Third Revolution

[] Vega - Stepping to Unity
[] Vega – Circles in Harmony
[] Vega – Link Secrets

[] Kazuki – Confirmation
[] Kazuki – Songs of the Heart

Now, there's 10 items, 6 of which we'll pursue, although frankly "Tradition in Service" and "Chosen Successor" are kind of mutually exclusive, so we need to look for three more to drop, which sucks because all of these are kind of important. Chosen Successor is the stand-out winner for me: the next 5+ years is going to be all about mass deployment of the Sixth Secret, and we're going to need someone like Adriana with the drive, vision, and passion to make that a reality. That means Tradition in Service is out for me, and Third Revolution is in. The Third Revolution has to be a priority; I had no idea how strong the reluctance was to embracing our transhumanism projects, but now that it's identified it has to be addressed, as that's going to make the difference for tens of thousands, maybe even millions, of lives in the coming battle against the Regular Fleet.

The next thing that's going to have to go is Songs of the Heart. Sorry, Kaizuki, but the whole reason we're taking this sabbatical after the Presidency, other than battery recharging and finally researching those Practiced items we have in our pocket and haven't used, is to get out of the public eye and give the new President room to capture the public imagination; going on an idol tour is kind of the exact opposite of that.

At the same time, Convincing Candidates, Stepping to Unity, and Confirmation are all in, because we really can't leave the government hanging with subpar replacements for all the super-qualified candidates who are leaving.

That leaves me with one slot, and Minding Iris, Circles in Harmony, and Link Secrets left, and I'm going to have to sleep on that. My first thought is that minding Iris can wait until after we're done with the Presidency and have much more free time, while Vega's requests are more time-sensitive, but then Iris's development is also time-sensitive, given how fast she's growing up... that's going to be a tough choice.

So for now, my divisions:

In: (1-5)
[] Adriana – Chosen Successor
[] Adriana – The Third Revolution
[] Mary – Convincing Candidates
[] Vega - Stepping to Unity
[] Kazuki – Confirmation

Unsure: (6-8)
[] Mary – Minding Iris
[] Vega – Circles in Harmony
[] Vega – Link Secrets

Out: (9-10)
[] Adriana – Tradition in Service
[] Kazuki – Songs of the Heart

Errr, no. The reason Amanda is so happy it came out well is because it means the Ministry won't be deflated anywhere near as badly when Mary and Iris leave. To be blunt, it would just slow things down given what Iris can do.

Snowfire, do we number the votes 1-10, or is it 1-2/3 and the six with the most '1' votes win?

@Shard and @TheEyes have this right. To clarify; rank 1-10 from the available options, and the top six votes will win.

I though rather hard about making this a task based vote, but rolling it into one large ranked with limited choices available seemed both more appropriate and conducive to discussion.

Voting is open

Hmm. Okay, slept on things and I still am not sure about which of the three "unsure" ones, since all three are so important and time-sensitive, so my current vote's going to be:

[1] Adriana – Chosen Successor
[2] Adriana – The Third Revolution
[3] Mary – Convincing Candidates
[4] Vega - Stepping to Unity
[5] Kazuki – Confirmation

[6] Mary – Minding Iris
[6] Vega – Circles in Harmony
[6] Vega – Link Secrets

[9] Adriana – Tradition in Service
[10] Kazuki – Songs of the Heart

I'll have to think about how to order those three a bit more today.

[3] Vega – Circles in Harmony
[4] Kazuki – Songs of the Heart
[5] Vega – Link Secrets
[6] Kazuki – Confirmation

[7] Vega - Stepping to Unity
[8] Mary – Minding Iris

[9] Adriana – The Third Revolution
[10] Adriana – Chosen Successor

This is my vote , I don't think we should push Adriana for president if she wins she wins and besides there may be better candidates then her + i'm not sure about the transhumanity , I would prefer to go slow and steady not like her pushing so fast for it to happen when we are still just scratching the surface with the tech

[5] Kazuki – Confirmation
[10] Kazuki – Songs of the Heart

These are my choices. Songs of the Heart is out because.. we want out of the public eye, do we not? The links and the third revolution are important, but Adriana isn't critically useful, judging from her abilities, so I'm voting for neither of the options that keeps her in. Someone else can reasonably replace her. Mary's option were somewhat more difficult, in honesty. I'm still unsure between both.

Ah, so the VI isn't coming along then? Sorry, that was a bit confusing.

Ugh, have a long speech in my head about this, but no time to type it. Highlights:
  • I'd be sympathetic to the reluctance, except Shiplords are coming to kill billions.
  • This is little different from Prologue. That should have been studied for generations before being deployed, because the idea of being able to build immortals on the first try correctly is hilariously optimistic, but it was judged that the billions of people who would succumb to the ravages of time in the interim was just too high a price to pay.
  • We need to have the moral courage to reach beyond our emotional reluctance and embrace the path that does the most objective good and saves the most lives.

@Snowfire made me read the entirety of his snoozefest doorstopper masterpiece of a quest, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.

And now he's making me vote on it as well. Go figure.

I consider Minding Iris pretty important since a good relationship with her will be a great help. I don't believe that the Shiplords will stop with their spying/electronic attacks so we have to be able to match them. The Third Revolution ties into that as humanity has to evolve faster in the face of the incoming threats. Link Secrets are important as that might give some more insight into the Unisonbound. We need more "magical girls". Gender of the "magical girl" not important:).
