The Gamer of Defiance Quest (Gamer/Defiance/SI)

@jcw3

Hey jcw3, might I ask what kind of flavor of the gamer you will be going for here?

As will we be going with it more leaning on the source material or with it instead more leaning on the Defiance setting?

As would things like magic, dungeon creation and summons be possible here later or would those things be instead switched out for things that make more sense for the Defiance sci-fi setting?

The latter. I'm going for Outside Context Problem, but not too outside. Energy Bolt is still a thing, ID Barriers and summons aren't. At least, I don't think so. ID Barriers were made so Jee-Han could train with his powers in the ordinary world, so that Gaia didn't have to smite him for using his gifts. On Terra Ferox, there are plenty of opportunities to use your powers, and the summons thing doesn't really fit into the equation. I will be leaning on the Defiance setting.

Post will be up and finished tomorrow. Apologies for inconvenience.

Though the barriers thing you're talking about is more an OOC type decision, while IC it's more for everyone to safely use their powers with out Gaia smoting them like some kinda Zeus dealy.

Good to know, though in that case would it be possible to spread our "skills" to others if we want too?

Since the abilities would be more in setting and match up to what is possible here.

Hey no worries mate, as updates will get done when they get done.

As we are all here to just enjoy a good time. :)

I'm afraid I don't follow in regards to the first two sentences.

Thank you. I have finished the bookstore section, here's a sneak peak. 96 and 71 for rolls for meditation and cooking respectively, 40 was needed.

Skill Unlocked! Cooking 1/100. The most basic art for survival of any sapient and sentient species. You understand the basics of boiling, brisking, baking, and all that nonsense in regards to Terran foods familiar to the average North American. Food tastes 1% better, requires 1% less ingredients, and gradual development of subskills. Percentages increase by 1 with each level up of this skill.

Skill Unlocked! Kundalini Meditation 1/100. One of the most powerful and comprehensive methods of yoga for achieving mental clarity and transcendence. Simply visualize the stars, the earth, and the body, and perform the proper mantras to receive your physical and mental rewards. Practice for one hour per day in order to gain +1 Vitality, +2 Intellect, +5 Wisdom, and +50% mana regeneration for the remainder of the day. Practice one full session for 40 days and double those bonuses. Further skills for this meditative ability will unlock as you progress on your path to enlightenment.

Dude... Dat meditation skill... Best thing is that it's easy to do, we can do it anywhere, anytime for just one hour and we only need to do it once per day to get large rewards! It will be easy to level too as we can do it in our downtime, really easily.

I am liking this quest more and more. And it's really cool that you are actually talking to the creators of the setting for more info. Now THAT is commitment!

I'm afraid I don't follow in regards to the first two sentences.
What I'm asking is since the "skills' we get as the Gamer would be more in tune with the setting we are in now and the fact that in theory the gamer 'skills' like 'engery bolt', 'power strike' and so on are 'skills' that anyone can learn if they have the required stats for.

As all the gamer does it let one learn any skill with no issue and reach a mastery with such with bullshit speeds.

So that if we wanted to later, would you let us teach others how to use the same 'skills' we have later and spread the OCP?

Oh this will lead to some fun here later. :D

Oh. Yes, of course, as long as they have the required Intellect/Wisdom score. The 'Gifted' perk you guys selected earlier can't be shared, but everything else can. That's how the Gamer power works in canon, too.

I'm going to bed, see you guys in eight/nine hours.

EDIT: The kundalini meditation will take up one action per day, just so you guys are aware.

Sweet!

Oh the heads we will turn when we bring in magic to this setting. :D

Still, so worth it here. As the gains from this skill is just too awesome not to take every day we can.

Edit:
Oh and on a funny note here guys, anyone else looking forward to when we master cooking and can just will food into being here?

As cooking does say at each level we can use one % less ingredients with each level.

[X] I vote that we permanently select this as part of our morning routine

So guys, anyone thinking it might be a good idea here to look for a cooking job in the future?

As doing such would let us grind a awesome skill on the job, get paid while doing it and get us some sweet contacts and rep. As everyone loves a awesome cook.

well it might make us some money it is a skill that I think isn't quite as valuable when it comes to survival
Why?

As it's a skill that when mastered will give us the ability to will unlimited heavenly food in being from nothing. So unless you are talking more about in a combat area way of living or think we won't have the chance to have a stable home center to use. I can't see a reason not to try for such if we can here. Since the pros of unlimited food works just seem to awesome not to get.

Defiance, Earth, Sol System, Terra Ferox Universe

After a night's contemplation, you decide to save your stat points for later. They will be useful in the future, but you don't think you need them immediately, not when you can simply grind them up easily in the immediate term.

You've got more specialized plans in mind for today. You're going to go to the bookstore, look for something on meditation and cooking, buy a book or two for each, and then you're going to go find a secluded spot in the wilderness and grind.

The bookstore is owned by a human couple, and is staffed by a Liberata man you don't remember the name of. The Defiance Bookshop doesn't exactly have an inspiring name, but it will serve its purpose. There are more options than at the library, which makes a small degree of sense, you suppose.

You greet Mr. Chavis amicably as you enter, and it doesn't take you terribly long to find two books, one on egg recipes (it was only a scrip and it was a skillbook) and the other on Kundalini yoga. It's the only book on meditation in the store, but it's definitely functional. Eight scrips, but it's definitely worth it.

-8 Scrips.

Fuck yes. Oh, this is awesome. That kundalini skill will take a while to be useful when compared to how long it takes to activate, but still. Damn, this is wonderful. You somehow manage to resist the urge to fist-bump yourself, and leave Defiance for the outside world.

Well, you don't actually mean the outside world. The stasis net surrounding the town has an enormous berth, most likely in preparation for future growth of the town, and there's a sizable amount of privacy to be found in the minor forests contained within the city limits. It doesn't take too long to get too, and after half an hour of searching, you find a place that's both easy to get out of, close to town, and difficult to see.

The tree in front of you is very convenient. It's large, aged, and easy to punch without seriously injuring yourself. You wanted to get your skill up with martial arts, so you might as well start now. You throw a right jab at the bark, essentially just to get yourself started. Another. Again. Repeat. After seven punches or so, you unlock a new skill.

Skill Unlocked! Unarmed Mastery 1/100! Ah, man's most trustworthy friend. His own fists! You know the basics of unarmed combat, particularly brawling and punching. 1% additional damage to unarmed attacks, 1% additional speed to unarmed combats, and no damage taken from punching or kicking other enemies. +1% each level of Unarmed Mastery.

Heh. Excellent. Now, in the original Gamer, Han Jee-Han had his own special attack that he used with the baseball bat, before he started getting into all that weird Abyss magic. You don't have that advantage, so Power Strike is very convenient at this early stage.

You take several swings at the tree, all with the best of your strength put into it. At this point, you have roughly above average strength, so it isn't terribly impressive, but your power at least acknowledges what you're trying to do.

Skill Unlocked! Power Strike 1/100! Sometimes you just need to hit something really hard. Costs 20 MP per use. 15% extra chance of critical chance. 25% extra damage on said attack. Increases by 1% and 25% each level of this skill.

Fuck yes. Okay. Time to test your stamina. You want to know how long you can keep up your punches. You try it, and you end up with one hundred and eighty three punches, including a few Power Strikes you throw in there. +2 Unarmed Mastery! Unarmed Mastery 3/100. +1 Power Strike! Power Strike 2/100.

You'll freely admit, the rest of the day was spectacularly boring. Punch. Punch. Wait for mana to restore. It's nothing to write home about, but you manage to bring down four trees over the course of your training. You even find six scrips on the ground as you walk home. +6 Scrips.

+10 Unarmed Mastery! Unarmed Mastery 13/100. +5 Power Strike! Power Strike 7/100. +1 Observe! Observe 9/100. +4 Dexterity. +1 Vitality.

Life is good.

You didn't do much in the way of jobs today, but you gained an impressive amount of power. What are you going to do tomorrow, on April 6, 2046? Remember that you have six actions to take.

---[ ] Buy an alarm clock. 15 scrips.

[ ] Grind your skills.
---[ ] Write in with elaboration.

Slow update, mostly because there wasn't really much to do in the vote. Next one should be different.

Also, I spent around an hour and a half on yoga websites lokoing for kundalini meditative specifics. The kind of websites that are like "Reach Enlightenment from 5 easy payments!"

Nefkivaniro is supposedly a Casti martial art, but the only source is a Tumblr page, so I'm not sure on the accuracy.
Datak apparently uses it, so you all know how I'm going to write it if you've seen the show.

Finally, the boring stuff. Here's what you gained in this update.

-2 Scrips.
New Skill! Cooking (goes under Cooking category)
New Skill! Kundalini Meditation (goes under Transhumanism/Psionics Category)
New Skill! Unarmed Mastery (+12, Level 13) (goes under Combat category)
New Skill! Power Strike (+6, Level 7) (goes under Combat category)
+1 Observe Skill
+4 Dexterity.
+1 Vitality.
+5 HP (because of +1 Vit. I already edited the pastebin to include the VIT you've already gained)

Rolls this update.

So figured we should finish up rounding out our setting lore and basic knowledge here IC and at the same time starting to use our sweet, sweet meditation skill. As those things can only be a long term gain for us.

As for the other points, well finding jobs that would allow us to both get paid and expand the skills we want to focus on here would be awesome. Since we are starting to get a idea of bare bones idea of what kind of play style want here and so finding a way to make sure we can synergy that with getting paid and making contacts would go a long way in helping to establish us here in the town.

Also +1 action for the clock is a must here.

And as for the last bit, well there isn't much of a difference income/xp wise from the merchant job or restaurant. So going for the job that gives us more contacts, a chance for a skill and a possible opening to go for a cooking job here seems like it would be the more worth wild of the two.

Updated info table below. Some questions:
  • When Kundalini Meditation says "practice one full session for 40 days and double those bonuses", does that mean we have to practice it for 40 days consecutively, without a break, or 40 days total experience?
  • What's the benefit of an alarm clock? I'm thinking it might let us take more actions per day?

    • Gamer's Body
      MAX/MAX

      9/100
A skill that gives information on topics and subjects familiar and unfamiliar. Best used on things that are confusing or difficult to understand. When used on living objects, gives you their MAX HP, MP, and basic information. On objects, grants you basic information.
    Technology
    • Basic Vehicle Repair
      11/50
You have experience in vehicle repair, but only in a stable environment, with plenty of tools. You've got a ways to go in order to make it in the postwar world. You can handle rollers and other basic vehicles just fine, but you'll definitely need some help with Votan tech.

      2/100
The human language born of Iberia and now dominant in South America. Spoken prominently in the Iberian Cooperative, most nations in South America, and parts of North America.
    Combat
    • Blunt Weapons Mastery
      1/100
Sometimes mankind's (and Votan-kind's) worst problems are solved by hitting with a big stick. Or axe. Or baseball bat. This skill covers blunt weapons, and your skill, speed, and number of critical hits when using them.
    • Unarmed Mastery
      13/100
Ah, man's most trustworthy friend. His own fists! You know the basics of unarmed combat, particularly brawling and punching. 1% additional damage to unarmed attacks, 1% additional speed to unarmed combats, and no damage taken from punching or kicking other enemies. +1% each level of Unarmed Mastery.

      7/100
Sometimes you just need to hit something really hard. Costs 20 MP per use. 15% extra chance of critical chance. 25% extra damage on said attack. Increases by 1% and 25% each level of this skill.
    Cooking
    • Cooking
      1/100
The most basic art for survival of any sapient and sentient species. You understand the basics of boiling, brisking, baking, and all that nonsense in regards to Terran foods familiar to the average North American. Food tastes 1% better, requires 1% less ingredients, and gradual development of subskills. Percentages increase by 1 with each level up of this skill.
    Transhumanism/Psionics
    • Kundalini Meditation
      1/100
One of the most powerful and comprehensive methods of yoga for achieving mental clarity and transcendence. Simply visualize the stars, the earth, and the body, and perform the proper mantras to receive your physical and mental rewards. Practice for one hour per day in order to gain +1 Vitality, +2 Intellect, +5 Wisdom, and +50% mana regeneration for the remainder of the day. Practice one full session for 40 days and double those bonuses. Further skills for this meditative ability will unlock as you progress on your path to enlightenment.

sure it eats up an action but grinding that skill will pay off when the fights start.

1. You have to practice every day for 40 days consecutively, without missing a day. Then ninety days and so on. I read on one kundalini website that you should do it consecutively for a number of days in order to better reach enlightenment. Or send the owner of the website 20 dollars. Either way works.
2. One extra action a day.

[x] Meditate. Become one with the stars, the Earth, and yourself. Take the path towards ascendancy. Unlock the benefits of Kundalini Meditation for the day.

[x] Look into jobs. Defiance is a mining town, and almost all of its mines are controlled by a fellow named Rafe McCawley. Maybe you can get a job as a miner? Rewards 120-160 scrips per day. 80% chance of success. Counts as 1 action, unless you succeed, in which case, it's 3. New skills, potential rewards, EXP. Job has unreliable levels of security (cave-ins, scrappers, hellbugs, etc.). You'll compete with other workers for who gets the more profitable shafts or exploration duties.
---[x] If successful, take roller washing job and Castithan martial arts training off today's agenda.

---[x] Instead of scrips, ask for lessons in cooking Castithan food. +2 to Cooking.
---[x] If unsuccessful, take Castithan martial arts (if mining job was a success), or read 'Hello, New York!' book before bed.

[x] Go to the haryiv. You're going to get your money's worth for training in Castithan martial arts. +2 to Unarmed Mastery. 90% chance of Nefkivaniro skill.

[x] Go to the bazaar/shop section. 1 action each. Write in for details. I will respond with the cost if not stated.
---[x] Buy an alarm clock. 15 scrips.
(Dammit, I really want to read that 'Hello New York!' book, but we just have so much else to do.)

Picking the mining job because, between our new abilities and stat boosts, I think we're ready to tackle tougher jobs with more EXP. Also, GM hinted that we should find a chance to talk to the mine overseer earlier.

Cooking job offers good skills. Either the mining job or the roller washing job will provide enough scrips, so I think we should take the cooking lessons instead.

In light of the new information, we need that alarm clock yesterday. We should definitely buy it now.

What's 20 dollars in scrips? Once we have enough, can we send it to the website owner? :p

So updating my plan then with getting the clock, as you can never have to many actions.

@jcw3

Though jcw3, would that extra action gained from the clock come from us just waking up earlier and therefore just starting the day sooner? Or would that be from finding out how long we need to sleep to get our rest effect and then planning from there?

As if it's the first and not that later, then could we use that idea for a action later to try to figure out if we can get more time out of the day/night for us to use?

It's...I'm not sure. The max you're getting is 7 actions, until you reach a certain point and get the Sleepless in...Defiance perk. So I'm going to say the former.

Ok, good to know.

An I'm betting that the Sleepless perk will be a con capstone here or will that been earned a different way?

Also, might I ask why you decide to cap us on how many stat points we can spend at any given time here? As that kinds of seems like a weird limit to give us and one that just seems to draw things out here.

I don't know what a con capstone is. Sorry.

Because in the last Gamer quest I did, people spent literally every stat point on Luck. I'm trying to avoid that in this quest, by allowing Luck to be won in games of chance, and by the no more than 3 limit.

Also, I forgot to tell you guys about an extra roll. For the punches, you rolled a 23, and I did a100+ 23% of 350 rounded up for the number you can successfully do. It's probably much higher now.
