Defiance, Earth, Sol System, Terra Ferox Universe
You start your morning out right, doing your usual meditation. Kundalini Bonuses Unlocked! Active until 8:45 tonight. The usual morning meditation. You're unfortunately still in the habit of making sure your clothes and hair aren't messy, but with the Gamer power, your body and clothes are always neat.
It's too early to visit Fozzi or the haryiv, so you head out to do your job for the day. Or, at least to apply for it. You picked up the papers at the Chatelaine Guesthouse, as per usual, and found an interesting one. You've discarded bounty papers in the past, but this one was something within your range. Hellbugs are rather easy to take down, and with a large enough force on your side, not a problem in the slightest.
Lawkeeper Clancy issued a notice for volunteers to help him hunt down some hellbugs two days ago, and the voyage leaves today. It's a great way to get EXP, even if there aren't any scrips involved. His office is literally two buildings down from yours, so you walk through the door.
Garret Clancy arches an eyebrow as you enter. He's doing a last minute cleaning of an old rifle. Easily made in the 2000s, at the earliest. "Sam. How can I help you?"
"I wanted to sign up for today's hunting expedition, sir."
"Do you have any skills with combat? Besides your martial arts stuff."
You shake your head in response. "I'm okay with an axe or baseball bat. But I did best a hellbug in personal combat yesterday."
Clancy gives you a disbelieving look before sighing. "You're serious, aren't you?"
He gets an affirmative bob of your head in response.
"Damn. Fine, you're in. Don't get yourself killed."
The Lawkeeper of Defiance stands, giving his Remington one last look before leaving his office. You follow him through, noting the large gathering of fighters outside. You recognize two of them from your quest that involved clearing the roads of fallen trees. Recife Jones and Arthur Rodgers. They must be handymen with some level of combat skill.
There are five others assembled, two human women, two more human males, and a Liberata you don't recognize. Lawkeeper Clancy observes the civilians calmly, looking to a young black man next to him. Tommy Lasalle, according to Observe. He apparently had a rough past before being deputized, and now he's very loyal to the Lawkeeper. First time you've seen the Exalted rating for relationships between two people outside of families.
Clancy claps his hands together. "You all know why you're here. The hellbug nest above Old Collinsville is growing too damn big. The population is supposed to be kept around a hundred, recent estimates call it at three hundred. We obviously aren't equipped to take on two hundred hellbugs at once, which is why we're going for the methodical approach."
He continues. "We'll be leading a few hellbugs away from the hive at a time, killing them, and then repeating it until the population is at sustainable levels."
"Clear?" he asks. There are a few questions about transportation. Clancy's acquired two rollers for driving to Old Collinsville. Everyone checks their arms, mostly melee weapons and such. You feel a bit left out, being unarmed.
You end up getting into a roller with Recife and two other humans. Cheryl Evans and Joel Nicolay. Cheryl drives, with her boyfriend Joel in the front seat. Recife gives you an uncomfortable look as he sits in the back seat next to you.
"So...are you going to do that disappearing act with the bodies this time, too?" he whispers.
He only gets a nod in response. Recife sighs. "Great. You share the money, though."
"Of course I will, if you help me out."
Describing the fight against the hives is almost pointless. You don't see anything that you haven't before, and no one gets seriously injured. The other three are obviously disturbed by you using martial arts to almost effortlessly take down eleven hellbugs on your own with your bare hands, but they don't say much about it.
You give them 15 Scrips, five scrips each, from the dropped money the hellbugs give, while keeping some for yourself. +7 Scrips. +135 EXP. +11 Hellbug Chitin. +1 Petrohol Bottle
The four of you were mostly a support group, communicating via walkie talkies with Clancy and Tommy's groups. That's why you only took down thirty-four stray Skitterlings and one Hellbug Warrior. That one got brought down by three shotgun blasts from Recife and Cheryl respectively. It doesn't drop any loot as a consequence, which is too bad.
Hellbug Warrior. A bulkier, tougher, spikier, and meaner version of a skitterling. Drops more loot as a consequence, but you're going to need something strong to break through its shell. 500/500 HP. 25/25 MP. 100% chance of dropping hellbug chitin, 15% chance of dropping petrohol bottle, ???
Petrohol Bottle. A bottle containing the ubiquitous fuel source made by refining gulinite. Occasionally created via hellbug digestive tracks, this fuel source is good for refilling almost any vehicle. Warning: Most objects that need fuel require more than one bottle for full functioning. This object can be found by killing many hellbugs in quick succession, or as potential drops from medium to high level hellbugs.
The raiding party returns to Defiance, with only one casualties. The other man from the road clearing job, Roberts, got a nasty scratch to his chest. But on the bright side, the main team took down a total of one hundred and four hellbugs, while your group took down fifty-nine. For now, it's an acceptable solution to the hellbug problem.
It's amazing that the whole battle only lasted an hour and half, and that no one got hurt. The sheer number of casualties inflicted by a small militia is also impressive, but the fact that the groups were only fighting two at a time decreases the impact value for you, at least.
You shake Clancy's hand back at the Lawkeeper's Office, as everyone parts their ways. "Not bad, kid. Joel told me that you actually killed eleven of those things with your bare hands."
"Recife took down five with an axe."
"We both know which is more impressive. Enough with the false modesty. Good work, Sam. You were a great help, from what Joel told me. In a few months, you might make a good Lawkeeper."
"Thank you, sir."
Clancy tips his hat to you in a respectful manner, before shooing you away as he reenters his office. "Duty calls, son."
+100 EXP. +1 Unarmed Mastery! Unarmed Mastery 16/100. +1 Power Strike! Power Strike 8/100. +1 Huntsman! Huntsman 2/100. +1 Observe! Observe 12/100.
It's reasonably early still, so you return to the wilds for a jog and maybe even a hunting mission. Strapping the backpack full of rocks to your back, you return to the border of Defiance, greeting Rick and Jeff amicably as you pass through.
The jog is uneventful, and nothing much happens during it. You're mildly disappointed, but you get your stat points from your several hours of running, so you're happy. +3 Strength! +2 Dexterity! +3 Vitality!
You also get a new skill, from the weird skill books that you can apparently find just lying there on the road. Skill Unlocked! Armorcraft 1/100. This is a Blacksmith-related skill that revolves around fashioning armors and defensive garb. 1% increased defensive strength of any armor created. Current rate of success: 50%. Increases by 0.5% per level.
When you arrive back in town, you make a stop by Fozzi's garage. The Sensoth gives you a friendly wave as you walk in. "Afternoon, Sam! You ready to fix some rollers?"
"Hell yeah, man."
"Let's get started, then! I've saved some basic ones for you to practice on."
You blink. "Aren't these...customer's cars?"
"Of course! I'll be watching you while you do it, and these guys are okay with waiting. I know them personally."
His relaxed way of speaking is definitely at odds with his deep, rugged voice. He points you to a remade car with a Dodge logo on it. "Okay. This one needs a new tire. It's a basic problem, I don't feel like doing it. There are a few ways that are different than cars thirty years ago."
Fozzi kneels down next to you. "For starters, there's no real need for nuts anymore. Just use the jack and the spare tire, and the car tire will automatically handle the rest."
"What about the lug nuts?"
"Those are backups. In case of emergency kind of stuff. You rarely use them anymore."
You continue to the next problem, with a gray truck that almost looks like a four wheeler with the wide, enormous tires it proudly displays. "This is a really stupid problem, but don't tell the guy that wants it fixed that I said that. Almost every newly produced car nowadays uses a Votan energy bulb in the center of the car. This guy managed to shatter it. Looks like something or someone fell on the car from a high place."
"Shouldn't you talk to the Lawkeeper about that?"
"He did. Just some loud party with a bunch of kids. Someone got too drunk for their own good."
"So how do we fix it?"
"We take out the old glass, put in a new one. I'll go get one from the back, and you can use the screwdriver."
It doesn't take terribly long to do that, and with the built in solar energy picked in from sitting in the sun, as well as the petrohol still in the tank, the car starts working again. "Great! Now I've got a few more for you to work on."
At the end of the day, he's supervised you fixing a cracked windshield (adhesive spray), welding a fuel cap back onto a roller (adhesive spray again), replacing the bulb in a broken headlight, and even putting in a new seat belt. Fozzi has to 3D print a new seat belt, but it takes thirty minutes.
Along the way, you learn of how modern Votan vehicle repair works, but you still have a ways to go. Fozzi's willing to let you come back tomorrow to learn some more, and you're happy to oblige. He'll even start paying you eight scrips an hour for a part time position as an apprentice. +5 to Basic Vehicle Repair! Basic Vehicle Repair 17/50. Unlocks Garage Apprentice quest line/job line.
Title Unlocked! Garage Apprentice I. +25% to all skills focusing on mechanics and vehicle use.
Your final stop for the day is the haryiv. The Castithan martial arts dojo has the usual students, and Avizu continues his lecture. You're happy to say that you're starting to pick it up. You've stopped using Power Strike in your fights while learning nefkee, mostly because you want to actually learn, rather than simply win in one quick punch.
That strategy is working for you. You suffered a humiliating loss to Chano, but you managed to fight Kyrij and Wade to a draw. Varuk's having a bit of trouble keeping up, but you have faith in him. He seems like a good kid.
Not much happens at the session. It's lessons on foot placement, quick spars between students, and listening to the haryiv master speak. +1 Unarmed Mastery! Unarmed Mastery 17/100! +3 Nefkivaniro! Nefkivaniro 4/100! +1 Dexterity!
Quite a workout. You return home feeling a lot better about your martial prowess, and ready to read a book. You choose The World Hatched Anew: Our Love for Our Gods by Kaarti Sishemo, a prominent cleric in the Crasian faith, the chief religion of the Liberata people.
Sishemo starts by telling of the Imperiate, a title given to Liberata tribesmen and women in the ages past, before they even knew of the existence of Irathients. It was basically a tribe chief, and they were responsible for settlements, expansion, and foreign policy decisions, while an elder council beneath them ruled over the inner politics, like enforcing laws and culture and such.
Eventually, an Imperiate was visited by a deity. His name was Crases, and he rushed to tell his tribe of his encounter. They did not believe him, and he left for many years. He returned twenty years later, looking the same as he had a long time before.
Now, many in Crases' tribe recognized that he was a deity, and he 'uplifted' many of those followers. Adrus, the Solar. Rikios, the Abundant. Ilaen, the Teallyri (a Liberata term for the combined oceans that make up a world). Shendor, the Warrior. Scuvel, the Irath (in regards to the planet, essentially just like naming a god after the Earth). Oreas, the Starchild.
Together, Crases, the Champion, led his godlings into a great victory for many centuries, before ascending to a higher plane of existence. In the medieval era, they left humanity to fend for themselves, only occasionally giving out sparse gifts to luckier miners or warriors, while promising to return in the far future.
In the absence of their gods, the Liberata people turned cruel and greedy, managing the capitalistic system of the Votans with ruthless abandon. Crases punished his lost children by destroying their home, the Votanis System, and forcing them to flee to Earth.
Now, Shendor and Ilaen are ruling over Terra directly. Shendor is harsh, but those who gain his blessing will succeed. Bharat, the Sulos regime, the UEI, Tianxia, South Africa, the Zuyil regime, and Columbia are all mentioned as powerful states with his blessing.
It seems a bit rubbish to you. You have a feeling that this religion got bastardized by clerics wanting to keep their religious power when they arrived on Earth, because there seems to be a rather petty excuse for why Crases and his uplifts left this plane of existence. Still, it's someones' beliefs, and there isn't any reason to be rude about it.
