The Gamer of Defiance Quest (Gamer/Defiance/SI)

Oh you guys, just had a great idea here.

How would you all feel if we party up with all of the lawkeepers here if we get the job? As that would let us farm xp faster, make the others stronger, hopefully help us bond and allow all of us to track how the others are doing, so we can help them if they need it.

Plus, having a easy way to stay in contact with the others without anyone being able to stop it would be really helpful too.

So think it could be worth wild gents?
Hmm sounds like it could get pretty OP...I love it.

Hmm sounds like it could get pretty OP...I love it.
Oh you and me both.

As the shenanigans we can get up too here as the other lawkeepers get more and more super human will just be a joy

Seeing as we're a Gamer in a war shattered world...does anyone else want to make the Avengers movies?
That could be a hoot to do, though we would need to get some new skills to pull it off. As I doubt there is much flim making now a days.

Though you have gave me a lovely idea of what to name our party now. :)

@jcw3

Hey jcw3, might I ask if we could use our armor skill to break down armors and other defense items for parts and if so would that be something we can get skill xp doing?

Defiance, Earth, Sol System,
Terra Ferox Universe

Kundalini Bonuses Unlocked! Active until 8:15 tonight. After finishing your morning meditation, you head out to do your errands, which is a habit that is growing increasingly commonplace in your life.

The first thing you do is head down the street to Clancy's office. You have wanted a job as a Lawkeeper for a while. While being a handyman is good money and always nice for raising your skills, the Lawkeeper job seems like a much greater reward. Definitely seems like it has a higher reward rate than the E-Rep Foreign Legion job.

You open the door to the Lawkeeper's office, noting both Clancy and Tommy inside. Tommy's filling out paperwork, while Clancy is looking over his uniform, trying to sew together a hole, with limited success. He looks up at you. "Sam. How can I help you?"

"I'd like to apply for the job."

Clancy nods slowly. "The Lawkeeper job?"

"Yes, sir."

He puts the uniform away, and folds his arms, peering at you in a curious manner. "First you tell us everything about you. I don't mean your history, I mean whatever you are now. I'm not going to risk myself, Tommy, and Defiance because you want to keep secrets."

You look towards him, nodding. He's right. You take a deep breath, before you start to speak. "You remember how I was from pre-Votan Earth?"

"Yeah. It was a dumb, flimsy excuse. You should have already known about the Votans, given that they showed up two years before your 'time'. And yet you didn't."

You swallow. "You're right. I don't think I was arktaken, or whatever the word for it is. There should have been a ship crashing, or an escape pod, or something. But I just woke up next to some rocks. No sign of wreckage or anything."

He contemplates that for a moment. "So, what, God put you here?"

"I don't know! I just woke up, in this fucked up world, what, like a week ago?"

"Nine days. Anyway. You're not finished."

"I have this power. It's...exactly like a power from a comic from 2015."

Clancy frowns in confusion. Tommy looks up from his paperwork. "What?" he mutters.

"It's called the Gamer. It...ugh. It allows me to function like a character from a role playing game."

"What," Clancy says in a flat tone. Well. He's flabbergasted.

"I have six stats that I can raise infinitely. Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Intellect, Wisdom, and Luck. I can learn a variety of skills and adjust my proficiency in them to superhuman status. In the future, I might learn magic. There are a ton of-"

"I'm sorry to interrupt, but that's nuts. You know that, right?" Tommy interjects. He looks more confused than smug or pitying, which is just great.

You try to think of something to convince them, before you have an idea pop in your head. "I have proof, besides the fact that I can kill hellbugs with my bare hands. You're going to see a blue box with an invitation to join my party."

Invite Garret Clancy to Party. Invite Tommy LaSalle to Party.

The two of them jump backwards. "Holy fuck," Clancy mutters. He stares at the box for a few moments.

Tommy's the first to speak up after a few awkward seconds of silence. "So...what happens if we press Yes?"

"You join the Party. You gain my ability to raise your skills and stats, and we share experience from killing monsters. You'll all get experience to raise your level from doing quests."

Thankfully, both of them understand how RPGs work, even if neither of them play them frequently. It takes a few demonstrations, which are unnecessary to show, but they do believe you. Clancy nods in finality. "Well. This power could be a damn helpful asset. You're an okay fella, even if you do have your secrets."

Clancy stands up to shake your hand. You return it. "Now, Mayor Riordan is going to want to know about you. Probably Amanda, when she becomes mayor, too."

"Rosewater will be mayor on the 15th, right?" you ask.

"Yeah. Why?"

"Why don't we just wait until then? I...don't want this getting out."

The chief Lawkeeper hesitantly nods in silent agreement. "Understandable. Let's focus on the Lawkeeper business for now, then. Tommy, get this man a uniform from the back room! Maybe he'll want one of your dorky hats."

The deputy rolls his eyes in mild amusement, before inviting you to the backroom. He's delving into a rack of uniforms for a few moments, before finding one that fits. You take a look at it. Observe says it doesn't do much, it's a Lawkeeper tier armor. That's pretty basic armor, but it's better than a T-shirt and jeans.

The outfit itself is equipped with a light green-beige button-up undershirt, with a bulletproof vest wrapped over it, and black khaki pants underneath it, with a belt tying the uniform together. There's a badge and a walkie talkie, apparently called a hailer in this reality.

"Here. Should work."

You nod. "I'm going to put it in my inventory. That way, I can just change when I need to."

Item Added! Defiance Lawkeeper Uniform. An average Lawkeeper tier uniform. Looks very nice and official, and gives you a high level of authority in town. Of course, the outfit comes with the responsibilities, so don't screw this up.

Item Added! Hailer. Initially constructed as short range radios for the Earth Military Coalition when satellites were no longer an option, this device proves invaluable in frontier areas like Defiance. Functions like a mixture of a walkie talkie, cellular phone, and a radio.

A quick thought transfers your outfit, and Tommy stumbles back. "Woah. That's...awesome. Can I do that?"

You hand him a jacket. "Try it. Put it in your inventory."

"Inventory," he speaks aloud in authoritative tone. Heh. He's still in the habit of giving verbal commands. His face twitches as his inventory presumably opens, and he puts the leather jacket in. A mental command later, and he's wearing the jacket.

"That's so cool!" Tommy laughs.

He experiments with his new power, and the two of you share a few laughs, before you notice something. It's a hat, a darker version of the Lawkeeper uniform color. Looks like something a patrol cop would wear in the South. Defiance is technically in the South, so it makes some sense that this hat would be here.

Item Added! Stratton S-42 Sheriff Hat. Hey! It's a cool hat! Gives shade for your face, as well as covering up baldness. You know. If you need that. In the future. Heh heh heh.

Sometimes your power is sadistic. It's not identical to the manhwa, but their sense of humor is certainly one thing they have in common. +1 Observe! Observe 13/100.

"Did you just level up a skill?" Tommy asks.

"You can tell?"

That wasn't in the original manhwa. "Yeah. A little status bar popped up on the...top right, I guess. It fades away after you look at it."

"Handy feature."

You return with Tommy to the main office. Clancy gives you a look over, and nods curtly. "Always with the hats. Youngsters," he scoffs. His expression turns more serious after that, however. "Sam, do you know how to use a gun?"

"No, sir. I can learn pretty quickly with my power, though."

"Heh. That's right. Almost forgot about that," he admits. "Today, we're going to get you initiated into the duties of a Lawkeeper, but tomorrow, you're going to the firing range. You might be a damn impressive martial artist, but some punk with a gun can always take you out in a lucky shot."

"That punk can still take me out if I know how to shoot, though," you point out idly.

Clancy grins. "Yeah, but you can shoot him first."

The rest of the time with Clancy and Tommy is spent going over regulations, paperwork, town law, frontier culling of the wildlife, relations with New Las Cruces, Cedars, and the nearest towns, the places where crime is most likely to occur, charity events that Lawkeepers attend to keep up town morale, and gods know it didn't end there.

Suffice it to say, you understand the job of the Lawkeeper, and you know what you have to do. Listen to Clancy and the Mayor, protect Defiance, and don't be a dick. Those are the three basic rules that you have to understand, and you think you have that down pat.

Title Unlocked! Defiance Lawkeeper I. +10% learning rate to all skills involving firearms. Increased respect from Defiance citizens.

You happily equip that title, even though you'll have to take it off when you go to Fozzi's. You say your goodbyes to Tommy and Clancy, and head to your other job. Fozzi's Garage is open and ready for business.

The Sensoth waves at you as he walks in, while he takes some scrips from a Castithan boy who looks like he just learned how to drive. "Lawkeeper, huh? Kickass, dude."

"Yeah, ton of stuff to learn, though. All this paperwork and regulations and stuff. It takes forever to go through. Still, the pay is good."

Fozzi nods. "Well, let's focus on the job here for a while."

"Of course."

+8 Scrips. +4 Basic Vehicle Repair. Basic Vehicle Repair 21/50. You learn a lot more than you expected to, mostly because Fozzi lets you have some old manuals to look over, so you find yourself close to halfway proficient in basic vehicle repair. At this level, you'd probably be ready to run your own shop if you were back on pre-Arkfall Earth.

You head home, happy that both of your jobs are over with, and settle down with a nice book. Waiting for a Land to Call My Own by Halan Koylu. It's about a worker level Castithan and his life on the Arks. The prologue says that the book was published by his children, and wishes to raise awareness of how the caste system is morally inexcusable on this new world.

Interesting. You start reading. Halan starts out by describing his childhood, as the brother to a handmaiden of a noble household. Handmaidens are essentially indentured servants bought in their early childhood, that are responsible for the care-taking of said household. Halan served as a janitor slave for the Riyj household until he was eighteen, when the Votans evacuated their system.

Halan nearly died in hypersleep, since the ship he was on received a much smaller level of attention from the artificial intelligences that governed the Votan refugees. He suffered from a degenerative cell disease that could have been easily healed on Daribo or Casti, but there weren't enough resources to cure a minor Yuke Liro like him.

Fortunately, one of the nobles on the ship with the same disease died, so the necessary medicine and surgical techniques were able to be transferred to him. Halan doesn't cover much else of the journey from Votanis to Sol. He was asleep after all, so it is understandable. Koylu goes on to speak of the arrival in Sol. The hypersleep systems woke up the essential people first. Politicians, engineers, scientists, diplomats, those who would need to divvy up Earth and terraform it in the first place.

Of course, then they noticed the advanced life already living on Urutho, as the Castithans called it. The situation worsened. As a Yuke Liro servant, Koylu never made it off the Arks until Arkfall. The remaining people on the ships were relying on printed food and water until 2030. Life was run by strict peacekeepers who desperately wanted to keep the lower classes down. They didn't want a proletist (rough translation for worker's rebellion in Kastithanu) revolt on one of the ships, especially considering that they could potentially defect to the human side.

Arkfall happened in 2030, and Halan was one of the lucky five percent that survived the remnants of the Votan fleet falling to Earth. He landed near Seattle, and was carried away by human-Bioman soldiers to medical facilities.

He died in 2042 of medical issues related to the Arkfall incident, and was mourned by most of the surviving Votan community in North America as a famous author, having written many books calling for increased rights for lower castes of the Castithan species. The book mentions that My-Vrtya holds a remembrance day in his honor every June 28, and that one of the city's suburbs is even named after him. +1 Wisdom.

You did quite a bit today. What are you going to do tomorrow, on Tuesday, April 10, 2046? Remember that you have seven actions to take.

---[ ] A book on Shirivanawo, the Castithan religion. You're curious what those nuts in the tent were talking about a few days ago.
---[ ] Stuff on politics of Columbia, detailing the current political parties/ideologies, such as the Globalists, the Terrestrians, and the Reunionists.
---[ ] Write-in. Please don't be a smartass and write 'something that's a skillbook'.

There will be a net, at the very least. 100% chance of success. +30 Scrips. 20-30 EXP. Increased relations with Darlene Coates. Counts as 1 action.

Maximum: Five. Going here is mandatory to maintain good standing with Fozzi's Garage.

[ ] Grind your skills.
---[ ] Write in with elaboration.

[ ] Write in. Within reason, please.

Here's what you got. Questions, comments, and criticism welcome and wanted. Omakes for stat points or +10% to skill book rolls are still wanted. I would love to see someone take advantage of the universe I'm working on. I would prefer character pieces, though, since I'd like to handle the worldbuilding myself.

Also, Tommy's name was spelled wrong in previous updates. Sorry, guys. It's LaSalle, not Lasalle. I've done my best to start the Lawkeeper job, there will be today and tomorrow that will require you to get adjusted to the job before you get paid. After that, you'll get 107 scrips per day from the job.

The hat was a friendly favor to Ironforge, who's been a great help with the quest mechanics so far. I liked the idea, so I included it.

Finally, we will have the Godzilla crossover event soon, so I hope you guys can grind your Kaiju Riding skill. Volge and raiders ain't go nuthin' on the King of Monsters. That was the obligatory April Fools joke. Now, wouldn't that make a great omake? :p

Ehh, I'm never really a fan of revealing superpowers, especially ones like the Gamer. Still, it turned out better than I thought.

It was kind of necessary, at least from my point of view. Did you think Clancy would just go "Eh. Corpses disappear when he kills them and money pops up. Whatever. Lol"? You guys wanted the job, so you had to answer some questions and help Clancy and Tommy out.

So did we party up with all the Lawkeepers here or just Tommy and Clancy in this update? And if the later, will we have to do so later or are these two the only constant lawkeepers in town?

Also, when do we get our first pay check and if not soon, can we pay things on tab for now until then?

I echo the "don't reveal powers" sentiment, but no matter. So we got the job. Hmm....

Those two are the only constant Lawkeepers in town. It's weird. I haven't found any evidence that Defiance has any other lawkeepers, so they're the only two for now.

The first pay check comes in Thursday, when you officially start the job and end the training. You get paid by the day. What do you mean, pay things on tab? Like at a bar?

Pretty much, since it will be a know fact that we will be a lawkeeper soon to the town and with that have a stable income. So I could see some places willing to give us the trust for a tab simply becasuse they either want to get in our good side for such and/or as a favor.

Also, might I ask if we can get some more info on our new party mates jcw3? As with the now in our party, we should be able to get some pretty freaking detailed info on them in their layouts. So we can know just how potent they both are now and possibly in the future which areas we might want to help them get better in.

[2-5] Lawkeeper Job. You have work to do. There's practice at the firing range, and you're also going to go on your first patrol. And let's not even get started on the paperwork!
