Not sure this is the optimal move (especially given her questionable approach to information security) but I'd rather have Justine helping than keep her in the dark.

[X] Drop the ring and the wallet back in the car and run. Buy the guy another wallet. Tell Justine everything. Tell Barton nothing.

Nice!
Oh this is so interesting! The big problem is that Liv has already said that she knows of it even if she does not know what it is. Giving Barton a story that He would believe will be a tough Task. Especially with her very puplic request needing something for national securuty.

[X] Take the ring and run. Hide it somewhere. Tell Barton it's gone.
-[X] Buy the guy another wallet.
-[X] Prepare a "device" that would fit into the wallet as the hint you were following.

Fuck the government, help our new friend. This was always my intention with examining the ring we're here to help out Erik for a mutual friend. Theoretically he could end up doing something fucked up but deciding to assume that is silly especially when he is apparently a comrade and worst case scenario would still be in our weight class to stop if he did something evil.

We're here to disarm a potential ticking time bomb for and provide advice/information to a comrade this is how we do that.

Is there any reason not to tell Eric ourselves? We can pretty easily hide Justine knowing us by saying that it was the call from Barton that put us on the trail. It lets us tell Eric that we discovered the problem, and track down the ring, so that we can warn him that if he doesn't decide to bring it back, he might be in lethal danger. If he is really as obsessed with wakanda as he sounds like, he might jump at the chance to return something to a representative and maybe get a reward for doing so. The only problem is our telling Barton that we already knew about the issue, but if we just text him that our cover story was that he was the first we heard about it for secret identity reasons, I'm pretty sure he won't tell Eric.

It seems unfair to everyone involved to not make certain that Eric knows the danger inherent to keeping the ring, and honestly it's his at the moment so he should be the one to make the choice. Ideally with Justine there, since that lets her know whether her guest is currently keeping something that might get them both killed, and let them talk to each other about it.

edit: something like this maybe?

[ ] Tell Eric yourself. Explain what you can of the situation without revealing your or Justine's identities, and tell him that someone from Wakanda is tracking it. You're pretty sure that part is handled for now, but he could still be in danger. It might be best for everyone to give it back voluntarily, or at least take precautions.

If Barton finds out where the ring is then surely they're just gonna steal it for the government or steal it to return it to Wakanda?

Yeah, we'd be lying to him or ghosting him like in the tell Justine option if Eric decided to keep it. Calling/texting him would only be for if Eric wanted to come along and return it himself.

Can't remember enough of what was going on and which names were involved how, but it feels like there's a missing option? Am I right that none of these are "give the thing back to who it was taken from"?

From my reread of the previous update:

1) >1 decade ago, Erik's father left Wakanda and took the Ring. Then he died.
2) Recently, Erik started playing around with the Ring and brought in his friend Justine.
3) Seeking to avoid Wakandan Laser Poisoning, Justine AKA "Crimson Cowl" brought us in to help
4) Wakanda Laser Poisoning squad is having trouble finding the Ring, but they've brought demands to the SSR/government.
5) We directly voted to get a Faraday cage around the Ring so we could study it relatively safely, rather than either giving the ring to the government or directly telling Erik what sort of trouble he's in and to put the Ring in its original storage container.

Liv!!!!!!! I'm so happy to see her back.

I'm not crazy about any of the options, but I am 0% here for stealing the ring; even setting aside Liv feeling Not Okay about something theft-adjacent already, the Laser Poisoning Squad is not gonna call it a day when some coloniser tells them "no dice". I do not want the Laser Poisoning Squad coming after us, or Justine, or (atm) Erik. Barton? I personally don't want him to die of laser poisoning either, but I think Liv probably ranks him lower on the "unacceptable to risk laser poisoning" list than everyone else.

I'd vote for the "tell Barton it's gone and give Justine the Gandalf Routine" option if I thought that wouldn't blow up in our faces, but there's no way we just go "keep it secret, keep it safe" and successfully avoid Frodo Erik inevitably dicking around with it. Like, the kid's flashing it at stoplights in (apparently not entirely misguided, yes i am maybe-more-than-slightly judging the straight girl on this) efforts to impress a girl; the Gandalf Routine simply isn't gonna cut it.

I mean, it's only been like 6-12 months since Liv lost her arm, right? Plotlines like that would usually take a long time to hit the surface.

So I for one am braced for nearly anything to happen.

I think I've said it before in at least one of the SpiderLiv threads, but I 100% trust Erika to do a better Clone Saga than DeFalco or Bendis did (not that it's a high bar to clear).

Awesome! I'm so glad to get another update in this excellent quest.

Ideally, I would like to buy time. Maybe we can talk to Eric and learn what he knows about his dad. Maybe we can even arrange a meeting with T'Challa (or whoever happens to be the Black Panther in this universe. Shuri?) to see what they know about the situation. I would love if we could get Wakanda to accept Eric (assuming Wakanda doesn't treat him like shit).

I am curious to see if/how T'Challa would be portrayed as villainous in shit story. I suppose it wouldn't be hard; he is a monarch who grew up as part of a royal family. Monarchs and royals tend to be assholes. (Unless the setting has changed things and Wakanda is no longer a monarchy.)

Also, when you get down to it, T'Challa has basically no reason to trust Liv, and her powers make her a potentially terrifying threat to his country. Lots of conflicts have started over less.
