While I write: hey, physics people! I know we have some of you in the thread. I am not one of you. Mind helping me out? I need the states of ammonia and water at 9 degrees Celsius and 60.56 atmospheres. 1.5 g if that changes things. Thanks!
Water should be easy - liquid. Compare to oceans at 1.5*60*10m depth.

It and the update are fascinating stuff. It's a whole new game. I like it.
Did a test run with console to get used to the new features.

I love the Space Mongols, I love the hyperlanes and I love my giant ships...the new way of getting territory's going to take some getting used to, but I like it too, makes choke point system's better.

Now to do a proper game IRON MAN!

Time to rack up some achievements.

If you look at Volus their eyes are forward facing, and angled in a way to give good parallax... good depth vision. The Volus are predators or ominvores, and are not a prey species. Most likely they're somewhere near the middle of the predator/prey ladder, like humans are, where they did more eating than being eaten. Their shortness of breath and lack of endurance could be due to their suits, or it could be because they're ambush predators instead of endurance predators like humans.

I said it and I meant it.

The winning vote. Getting down to writing!

Water should be liquid at that point, although I'd have to make sure. Not so sure about ammonia thought

Pretty sure ammonia should be a liquid at that temp and pressure. Have a lookie at this graph.

What unit is that on the Y-axis? "bara?" For what is that short?
The second graph is the really important one. At 9C and 60bar, it is very much a liquid. At that pressure it's only a liquid at 100C or greater.

Essentially, for the first graph, anything to the right of that line is gonna be a gas, and to the left, a liquid.

A bar is defined as 100,000 Pa (Pascal). That's slightly below the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level (~101.3 kPa). Bar(a) is absolute bar, which as far as I'm able to tell works just like the normal unit bar.

But even if there was a slight difference, it probably not enough to change the fact that ammonia would definitely be a liquid under those conditions

Why is there that much pressure anyways if something isn't underwater to begin with?

That's likely the pressure inside a volus suit or colony. If we operate under the assumption volus biochemistry uses ammonia as the universal solvent.

Gravity shouldn't play a direct role in the boiling point of a liquid - it only plays an indirect role by increasing the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere.

Irune (volus homeworld) is a pressure pot, according to the wiki entry. Like Venus, but without the blasting heat.

Ammonia as a water substitute, with volus still being carbon-based, is looking increasingly credible.

Getting down to writing, folks! Hold questions, please.

Diplomatic Crisis
[ ] Businesslike. There has been quite enough drama over this already. Get in, get your answers, get out. You can take corrective measures at your leisure.

Diplomatic Crisis
"The standoff in Taramnal continues today, with Prime Minister T'Vael issuing renewed demands for the Lystheni government to allow Virmirean merchants in Lystheni space to return home. The Lystheni Dalatrass issued a refusal once again, demanding a general drawing down of quarian forces along the Lystheni Border Zone before she would allow Virmirean vessels into Lystheni space.

"Meanwhile, on Virmire, the mood is increasingly tense. Many are accusing the Dalatrass of no less than hostage-taking; using Virmirean citizens as collateral to escape the consequences of the fallout from her government's actions. With the Prime Minister's recent reveal of the Lystheni's many violations of Virmirean trust, Lystheni interests have few friends in Virmirean space at this time. With armed forces on alert on both sides of the LBZ, tensions continue to mount, and many speculate that Virmire may soon find itself engaged in a general war within the Sentry Omega cluster.

"Despite this, the diplomatic summit to be held in the LBZ system of Carrovai remains on schedule. The Prime Minister's delegation is scheduled to arrive later today, with the Lystheni communicating that they shall do the same-"

You switch off the feed and turn to the rest of the room. "Alright, people, we've just arrived in Carrovai. Updates?"

Communication while under way in FTL isn't really possible, so for the duration of the final leg of your journey to Carrovai and the summit, you were incommunicado with the rest of your government. Thus, why your first move upon arriving and confirming that the system was clear was to set up a conference call with the members of your cabinet. All them remain in Virmirean space, save for Kirai, who sits, as always, behind you and to the side.

"The companies that stood to lose from the halt of Lystheni trade haven't been making much noise," says Lissa. "They're more concerned with their people, and the tensions."

"About those people," you say. "Marae. Anything from the Lystheni?"

"Nothing the news didn't have to say," says Marae. "The Dalatrass continues to enforce closed borders until we stand down the 3rd RWF." Her voice is carefully neutral. She was quite vocal about her opposition to you putting them on active status along the border.

You turn to Shurna. "What updates from the interrogations?"

"Those Lystheni agents we've captured have mostly remained silent," she says. "That said, their informants -- the Virmireans they managed to convince to share, 'harmless,' bits of information in exchange for payment -- have been less so."

"Yes," you say, voice cold. "About those informants..."

"Cooperative, one and-" gshk "-all, Prime Minister," she says, waving her hand. "Not every intelligence asset is a traitor. By and large, these people thought they were being paid to share truly harmless bits of information -- the mood on the street in response to such-and-such, their read on the situation regarding this and that. Once we explained-" gshk "-for what they had been used, they proved eager and willing to assist us in our inquiries. Mostly, the Lystheni used these people to get an impression on our political climate, it would seem. They were particularly intrigued by the Secessionist party."

"More paranoia about our Citadel connections," says K'Sharr, frowning. "Prime Minister, the more I hear about this, the more tempted I am to have them handled by the time we reestablish contact with the Salarian Union."

"Noted, Minister," you say, voice stern. "You have made your opinion on your favored course of action quite clear, thank you."

He subsides, nodding. He had been in favor of a swift and undeclared war.

You look at Shurna again. "What about the Lystheni network operators? Do we have anything from them?"

"Precious little," she says. "Again, they barely speak to us. We have gleaned some things, however. We-" gshk "-had observed them trying to deepen their penetration into our military signals. Pushing along those lines knocked some gems loose. Apparently, our new outpost in Vayrule was a matter of some consternation to them, given-" gshk "-that they had no means of setting up operations there. That it signaled military cooperation with a Council Affiliate -- no matter how limited the context -- was apparently worse still."

K'Sharr says nothing, very conspicuously.

You frown. "We'll have to demand some answers, then. The Lystheni have been cagey enough about this. I need to know what the issue is, here." You sigh, leaning back. "If there aren't any last-minute updates, I'll get to the meeting."

There's a round of quiet demurral, and one by one your Ministers sign off, leaving Kirai and you alone.

You sigh, pinching at your forehead. "Any advice?"

"The more we learn about the Lystheni, the less like a government and more like a cult they seem," she replies. "Be cautious of them, Prime Minister. Tensions are high, they have our people in their territory, and they're doubtlessly feeling backed into a corner. That was the plan, but that our people are still behind their lines was not. They have leverage, now."

"Only if I let it work," you mutter.

She tilts her head at you.

"Just a thought," you say, waving it aside. "I don't want it to come to that."

"None of us do," she replies. "You are right to consider the possibility, though. Be careful. Keep a barrier handy."

"Maybe you should be careful," you say, managing a smirk. "Can you even still remember how to make a barrier?"

"I may not be a fighter, but I am still a Matriarch," she says in a lofty tone of voice. "You'd run out of energy before making your way through a barrier of mine, little Maiden."

You laugh softly, and let silence rest for a moment.

Then you stand. "Right, then. Let's get going."

* * *
While you're disinclined to be charitable to the Lystheni at this point, you do understand why they refused, point-blank, to hold this summit on one of your warships, or in your space. It's the same reason why you refused to hold it on or in theirs. It did present an issue, though; neutral ground was few and far between.

Thus, you proposed a compromise; you would provide a disarmed and unmanned defense platform, towed to Carrovai, as neutral ground for the meeting, and permit them to sweep it to their satisfaction. It's actually a sneaky way of getting a dig in at them; a doubtlessly-grating reminder that with the cessation of trade, making one of these is an expense that they can no longer support, let alone simply having one lying around spare. A reminder of one of the many consequences, if they don't play ball.

That said, with a distinct lack of better options, it's an insult they have little choice but to bear, and the platform is in place when the two of you arrive.

Both sides have, by agreement, brought a single light cruiser, a pack of four frigates, and supporting corvettes. A small force, for you, and a significant portion of their combined fleet for them. Both sides send shuttles to the platform's docking bay, the Lystheni arriving prior to you.

When you arrive, the Lystheni guards lining the path to the agreed-upon meeting place eye you with distinctly unfriendly looks, but remain civil. You leave your own forces along the trail as well, to match them. By the time you arrive at the repurposed station commander's briefing room, you have only four guards left with you. You leave two by the door, to match the Lystheni guards stationed there.

Kirai, you, and your remaining two guards pause by the door, and you review your agenda.

You are about to meet the Lystheni Dalatrass face-to-face to discuss terms. At the moment, the balance of power is firmly in your favor given their many transgressions, but the Lystheni have closed their borders in retaliation for your own moves, and your merchants have been interned in Lystheni space. What will you be demanding from the Lystheni, what are you prepared to do if they refuse, and what, if anything, are you prepared to concede? THIS VOTE IS BY PLAN. SELECT AS MANY ITEMS FROM THE BELOW OPTIONS AS YOU WISH. PLANS MAY CONTRADICT THEMSELVES TO AN EXTENT; FOR INSTANCE, YOU MAY DEMAND SOMETHING WHILE STILL REMAINING PREPARED TO CONCEDE IT IF NEGOTIATIONS TURN THAT WAY. THE LYSTHENI WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO COUNTER-OFFER, AND THIS PLAN DOES NOT CONSTITUTE THE FINAL DECISION ON THE MATTER. APPROVAL VOTING IS STILL IN EFFECT, AND IN THIS CONTEXT MEANS THAT YOU MAY FREELY VOTE FOR AS MANY PLANS AS YOU WISH.

[ ] Plan [Write-In Name Here]
-[ ] Demands
--[ ] The immediate release of Virmirean merchants from Lystheni territory (civilians released as a precondition of continued negotiations).
--[ ] Full disclosure of Lystheni history and society, including their origins and the nature of their animosity towards the Citadel (Lystheni forced to stop being cagey).
--[ ] The resumption of trade, this time on Virmirean terms (resumed trade relations with an open market, economically subordinating the Lystheni to you and proving far more profitable than the previous, protectionist agreement).
--[ ] Full Lystheni commitment to the Rachni War effort (all Lystheni military assets placed under your command).
--[ ] Full disclosure and surrender of the stations in Sikel in violation of the Virmire-Lystheni Border Treaty (get the artifacts and the stations on which they sit, along with experimental records).
--[ ] A Lystheni-funded network of your best observation posts throughout Lystheni space (become Big Sister on the Lystheni's dime).
--[ ] Immediate submission of Lystheni space to Virmirean administration (vassalize the Lystheni).
-[ ] Leverage
--[ ] A continued complete trade embargo (what it says).
--[ ] The dissolution of the Virmire-Lystheni Border Treaty and a complete blockade of Lystheni space (claim the LBZ and put defense platforms in every system to make sure that nothing passes).
--[ ] Allowing the resumption of trade, but no longer making terms a concern of the Virmirean government (cut your trading companies off the leash and stop telling them to play nice with the Lystheni's terms).
--[ ] A commitment to allowing the Citadel unfettered passage through Virmirean space in dealing with the Lystheni however they please (promise to let the Citadel do what they like to the Lystheni when the time comes).
--[ ] War (make your implicit threat explicit).
-[ ] Concessions
--[ ] The resumption of trade on the Lystheni's terms (give them their lifeline back).
--[ ] Economic support of Lystheni interests, working towards a common understanding and cooperation (pay them).
--[ ] A commitment to maintaining the sovereignty of the Lystheni state as a priority of Virmirean foreign policy (guarantee the Lystheni's independence).
--[ ] Permit the relocation of Lystheni installations in violation of the Virmire-Lystheni Border Treaty (let them have the artifacts and stations).
--[ ] A general withdrawal of military forces (stand down the 3rd RWF).
--[ ] The release of captured Lystheni intelligence operatives in Virmirean space (give back their spies).
-[ ] Write-In (at any point, write in any demands, leverages, or concessions that you like. No restrictions, no moderation).

THREE-HOUR MORATORIUM. THIS VOTE HAS NOW CLOSED.

These negotiations will largely be conducted without further rolls. You rolled, and got the Lystheni to come to the negotiating table. Beyond that, I know what the Lystheni's requests and walk-away points are, and shall conduct negotiations according to that knowledge. If we hit an edge case, where it's not immediately clear to me how the Lystheni would value an offer, I'll assign a DC and call a roll, but that may not actually happen, depending on how negotiations go.

Hope you enjoy this event series, folks! Gonna be fun! See you all around!

alright, so the big question here is what exactly do we want? the main big thing we want is for them to stop being paranoid lunatics while we're fighting killer bugs, but what do we need to get from them to get that? Info would help with other concessions, but it would consume capitol that would let us know what concession to ask for.

that said, given they just straight up took hostages, I'm kind of leaning towards just shooting them in the face. diplomacy works best when there is at least some trust, and nothing they have done shows them as being trustworthy.

Ok, getting them to cough up our people, our artifacts, and their history is necessary in my view. We can offer economic assistance if the term includes % in buying our stuff first, especially the critical components like industrial and communication equipments. This have a nice side benefit of kneecapping their own development.
