what model of car?? how many hp?!! how many gears?!! is it a sedan or-- AHEM... sorry for intruding in your car life. i tend to take my cars seriously. VERY. SERIOUSLY.

At this point it would be hard for anyone to argue we weren't glorious at least for a while. Completely trapped in a single cluster by the Rachni with half a defence fleet, and we managed to turn that situation around, give the Rachni one hell of a black eye, effectively take over two more clusters, saved a Quarian war fleet, and don't forget the bit where we (so far, reasonably successfully) reinvented naval doctrine through the creation of the Battlecruiser.

So, this turn we built no dreadnoughts nor battlecruisers. What will we do in the next 2-to-5 turns, while our eggheads figure out stolen tech?
Continue to create Republican-pattern dreadnoughts? Revert to building Virmire-pattern battlecruisers?
Go for experimental designs? Fund some supercapital cargo haulers/troop transports?

Your ship builds conclude during the results phase of the year, so declaring that you've built none is, dare I say it, slightly premature. ;) I refrained from mentioning the Republican during last year's results because I wanted to save it as a moderately dramatic setting for the flavor text for this year.

can we start designing a new battlecruiser when this wait is over then?? beacuse, i imagine that.. well... the battlecruisiers we have COULD be refitted if popping out a new, BETTER-TOUGHT-NOT-SLIGHTLY-RUSHED design... you know, with external modules. a plug-and-play system could do wonders to our battlecruisers. need speed? put an engine module on them!!! want more dakka? stick some turrets and batteries on the hardpoints!!!

now that i think aboutit... we WOULD NEED to design some crazy new ship to accomodate plug'n'play technology.

we do it right however.. and we got ourselves a homeworld-mothership-emulator. or in simple terms:

"what can your ship do??" --- " EVERYTHING!! "

yeah. but if you make the ship big enough?? size gives more dakka, more sensors, it makes it harder to take down due to the simple fact that there is more ship to take down, and it ALSO gives more space overall. wich means more hardpoints, and the ability to use the ship as a FIRE-EVERYTHING-LIGHT-UP-THE-VOID-IN-MASS-ACCELERATOR-AND-OTHER-WEAPONS-FIRE platform. basically, think battlestar galactica when defending her fleet. they just throw slug after slug and halt or slow down a fleet of enemy ships using sheer volume of fire.

just imagine you are putting 75 9mm bullets in a soldier sitting in front of you. thats what plug and play ships could turn themselves into with a fast visit to a base. and the best thing?? ANY ship that is or can be plug and play can join in this quest to sink the enemy using "there is never too much dakka" tactics.

just ignore me if is not possible. if it is, then can somebody please give a ring to poptart? i am new in this "participate in thread" thing.
damnit...

Have you read the battlecruiser description/discussion? We've got different ship (classes) because we do need ships for different roles; one fits all sounds really nice, up to the moment you compare ressource/performance. What would you prefer - one dreadnaught or 20 frigates - for scouting?

Yeah a dreadnought would be horrible for recon. They are slow mobile fortresses. They are best for assaulting fix targets or relays. A battle cruiser would be better but still it is a large target made for killing cruisers. A bunch of small ships in a flotilla would be better.

Economics of scale.

A group of small ships can cover more ground, quicker, and do it more efficiently. For the cost of one dreadnought that needs to (relatively) slowly poke around, you could have an entire flotilla (or two) of corvettes or frigates that can cover more ground and do it quicker. That, and if you run into something that can murder your scouts, the small ships can escape...a dreadnought would find that more difficult. Sure, it would take more to reach the point where it has to run, but it's better to have the option to begin with.

Scouts aren't really intended to fight, unless you're scouting in force. In which case you probably already know what's there, in general terms, and are preparing a potential assault. Then you want cruisers or such. If you're just looking for resources or trying to poke around at the edge of a system, smaller ships are better.

And, again, cheaper :V

It's not a bad idea, in concept. The problem is when you move past concept. Any ship that is designed to undertake many roles is going to suffer in comparison to a ship in a specific role.

"Jack of all trades, master of none"

To make a ship that can swap roles, you have to accept some level of suffering in comparison to a purpose built design. Someone who has a frankly ridiculous economy that can afford a modular design can do it, but if you're more concerned with getting SHIPS OUT NOW you want purpose built.

Regardless, we need to get the Quarian's permission to use the data before we actually use it. If we don't, they'll know we stole it, and that's bad, mmm'kay?

[ ] Barrier Miniaturization:

A bit off topic, given that we won't be voting on this for a few, but I was wondering how small we're talking here. Would this be wearable, or are we talking mobile cover a la an emitter strapped to a dog sized drone?

Both will be game changers, but going straight for wearable barriers seems like a hell of a leap forward

I'm sure they knew we stole some stuff, just not how much we stole. Getting permission would incriminate the nice admiral when he goes back to RoR, which is not endearing to anyone. Best to slowly phase in the improvements for both government to look the other way and Admiral to play "I'm an admiral not KGB!" card.
