What is your Gender?

[ ] Male

[ ] Female

What village are you from?

[ ] Konoha

[ ] Iwa

[ ] Kiri

[ ] Kumo

[ ] Suna

What time period are you in?

[ ] War. War always changes. You're being flung to the front lines of the meat shredder that is the Third Shinobi War.

[ ] It's after the Third Shinobi War. You've just finished your genin exam, but your genin teacher declared all three of you worthless.

How did you find the summoning scroll?

[ ] It was a scroll stuck in a stone near your village. No one could pull it out until you did on the eve of your journey to the ninja village that you'd be trained at.

[ ] It was a family heirloom, passed down from generation to generation. It was a closely guarded secret as your family knew it was a summoning scroll. A quirk of your family was that they worshiped a horse called Arceus. Yeah, you lived in a cult.

[ ] You had found it in the garbage in the alleyways of the ninja village, the shine of the scroll calling to you.

Opening it you found four round orbs. Which one did you choose?

[ ] Furfrou

[ ] Seel

[X] Budew

Ah, yes, Saya Iwa remembered now. Her teacher had just kicked the shit out of the three of you in the training grounds 13. Arm covered by her body, she grabbed at orb on her belt and pressed the button.

"Embarrassing, frankly, though I shouldn't expect much from three civilian born children," he said, sighing. He was a tall man whose body was covered in mostly red armor. Armor they had failed to even put a scratch on. The test begun with him saying that if they earned his respect, they would get his name.

"Don't count me out, yet ..." Saya muttered, standing up. She was the hope of her family! She couldn't lose now!

"Oh?" She pressed the button once more and the strange grass creature called Budew came out. It blinked at the over seven foot tall man it was supposed to fight and looked back at her in disbelief.

"C'mon, fight!" Saya urged. It shook its head as it started glowing. Little motes of energy started going from the armored man to Budew. Curious, he squatted down with a glowing green hand, disregarding the transfer of energy.

"What a strange summon," he muttered. Then he flicked it into a rock wall.

"Budew!" Saya screamed, her heart in her throat. Her orb glowed and Budew disappeared into it like it did last night. No!

"Doesn't disappear in a traditional smoke puff, but rather goes into an orb. Iwa, where did you get such a thing?" He demanded, striding over in two steps.

"My family has a summoning scroll. We've had it in our family for generations," she said quickly.

"That scroll has never worked for any shinobi, if I remember correctly," he said, staring down at her.

It's only for a true Iwa, a true believer of Arceus! She wanted to yell. But she swallowed it up. He wouldn't get it, no one ever did. "It worked for me last night."

"Interesting," he considered her. "I guess you all pass."

"Because of her?!" It looked like Wataru had gotten his second wind at last. The boy was propped up on his elbows and was glaring at her. Yikes.

"Yes. Summons are powerful and rare. That scroll in particular is indestructible but has failed to accept any summoner until now." He explained. "I suggest counting your blessings."

That quelled his anger, but he still didn't look happy. She was happy Sousen was knocked out right now. The man started walking off.

"I'll see you guys tomorrow same place. Name's Han by the way," he said cheerfully.

"You want to practice Genjutsu and Kenjutsu?" Han asked, raising an eyebrow. "I'm not an expert, but I can show you the basics at least. You'll have to find your own teacher later on though."

"Huh, why?" Saya asked, blinking. "Can't you get me some?"

He stared at her in disbelief. Ganjobu snorted.

"You seriously don't know?" Han asked.

"She lives under a rock, her family has some kind of creepy religion," Ganjobu explained. Saya rounded on him angrily.

"Shut up!" She shouted. Budew echoed it with some kind of trill.

"Hey no fighting," Han said automatically. "Anyways, Saya, your teammates can explain it to you afterwards. It's time to focus on training."

---

Everything hurt. Again. Even Budew was knocked out on its back. Saya watched as Han strolled out of the training grounds with a merry smile on his face.

Sadistic bastard. She sat up.

"So ..." She trailed off. "Why can't sensei set us up with other teachers?"

"He's the jinchuuriki, dumbass," Ganjobu grunted out.

"What?" She said.

"The container for the demon, a weapon for Iwagakure to use against their enemies," Sousen said quietly.

"Oh. Okay I guess." Saya said, confused. Demon? Weapon?

"Wow, you're stupid," Ganjobu said, shaking his head. "I'll put it simple. No one likes him."

"Shut up! Or I'll have Budew absorb your chakra again!" She yelled. Ganjobu made a face.

"I don't know how that demon can stand your stupid summon's attack. It hurts," he complained. Saya launched herself at him and they scuffled in the dirt. Sousen shook his head.

---

Budew was easy to take care of at least. She watered her and fed her dirt. Sometimes her leaves would fall off and she'd make tea packets out of them. It's what their ancient device called the Pokedex said to do. Her family was ecstatic that she'd pass her exam and given her the Pokedex and scroll for her use. The week went by quickly, with sensei training them. Then sensei showed up as she was about to leave the house for training. She stared at him.

"Er, sensei, what are you doing?" Saya asked.

"Walk with me through the village," he ordered. She internally shrugged and walked with him. Soon, there were whispers all around, that were badly hidden.

"Is that the demon with a child?"

"I heard he got a genin team."

"Awful. He'll get them killed."

"I bet he just eats them."

Saya couldn't believe her ears. How could these people disparage a jounin of Iwagakure??

Han grabbed the back of her shirt as she angrily lunged at someone for a particularly horrific comment and they disappeared up on the rooftops.

"Saya, this is the world of a jinchuuriki," he said, uncharacteristically stoic. "These are the words I have heard all my life."

"I ... why?"

"I have a demon sealed inside of me but all they see is the demon. The Tsuchikage has been pressuring me to release you three into another jounin's care. If you wish, I can do that," He said, patting her head. "If you continue to be my student, eventually you'll have to endure the same sort of scorn I do."

What do you say?

[ ] No way! You're my teacher and you're stuck with me. Fuck the haters!

[ ] Yes, I'd like to change teachers.

"I see." He said, face unreadable. "Before that, we have a mission. C rank one to be exact."

"We haven't even done D-ranks!" Saya protested.

"No one's going to allow me near their children or paint fences," Han reminded her. "I am also a very strong shinobi that cannot be off the roster for too long."

What mission do you take?

[ ] Guard a businessman named Gatou in Wave.

[ ] Do a border patrol around Konoha's border.

[ ] Rebuild multiple bridges to prevent Kannabi bridge from ever happening again.

1.4 The Amazing Stupendous Fabulous Maito Gai

[X] No way! You're my teacher and you're stuck with me. Fuck the haters!
[X] Do a border patrol around Konoha's border.

"A border patrol? Already?" Ganjobu asked.

"Yup," he said. "Head back to your houses and pack up for a week long trip. You have an hour."

Ganjobu and Sousen nodded and left in a hurry. Saya nervously adjusted her backpack straps. This was so nerve wracking! A C-rank in their first week!

---

This was pretty boring. Everything outside looked grey and the same as the village. Saya held back her sigh as they kept running with their teacher who seemed inexhaustible. Sousen tripped and fell down. Han stopped to look at them, huffing and puffing.

"Oh. I forgot you guys are mediocre." He said. "Alright, ten minute break."

Saya sagged against a boulder. She had more things than she should with Budew and the scroll so she was exhausted.

"This mission should be fairly easy. Konoha doesn't want to start shit and neither do we," He said absently.

"I'm surprised they made you go on such a easy mission," Sousen remarked.

"They want me to flex on Konoha," Han said, shrugging. After the ten minute break, they ran some more until they entered a forested clearing. Saya was awed by the sea of trees that stretched to the horizon.

They made a clearing quickly and started patrolling. Then in a particular clearing, there was a yell from across of them0.

"HELLO IWA NINJAS!" A man in stretchy green spandex yelled. "I AM MAITO GAI WHO IS PART OF THE NEW BORDER PATROL!"

Han laughed while everyone stared at Gai. Saya blinked slowly. Why did this remind her of her mother?

What does Han do?

[ ] Politely greet the Konoha nin and go on your way to train.

[ ] Try to seduce the Konoha nin and make your genin team very uncomfortable.

[X] Politely greet the Konoha nin and go on your way to train.

Sensei just waved politely and went on their way. He started training them in the various things; Kenjutsu, taijutsu, etc and he drove them relentlessly. Budew was getting stronger too! Saya could feel it! During one of her prayers to Arceus, Saya stood up and stretched when something soared above her head. Her eyes widened when she realized it was a shinobi!

"After him!" Han roared as he disappeared in a snap. They ran after the quick shinobi and just as he coasted over the boundary line, Maito Gai hit him with a side kick to the face while Han swept his legs below.

"Ah shit," Han muttered as the Mizu shinobi fell right on the boundary line. "He's mine!"

"I am sorry, but he is also on my side!" Maito Gai pointed out, as the iwa genin team finally arrived.

"Well, I don't suppose we could just cut the bastard in half and share?" Han asked. Saya was pretty sure he wasn't joking.

"He will not be alive for interrogation then!" Maito Gai shook his head.

"I really don't want this to become a diplomatic incident," Han said, with a sigh.

What does Han do?

[ ] Suggest that the two genin teams fight and whoever wins gets the shinobi.

[ ] Seduce Maito Gai into giving the shinobi to them.

[X] Suggest that the two genin teams fight and whoever wins gets the shinobi.

"Why don't we have our two genin teams fight and whoever wins gets the shinobi," Han said. He didn't exactly want to fight someone who was famed for being able to unleash his gates, even if he had a edge over him with his specific steam jutsu, over something so insignificant. Maito Gai considered this for a moment.

"WHAT A YOUTHFUL IDEA! Everyone, get in here!" Maito Gai shouted, sending some birds flying up into the skies. A Hyuuga, a girl with a hefty scroll on her back, and a miniature version of Maito Gai appeared in front of them.

"Standard chuunin exam rules?" Maito Gai inquired as he started making a circle line around the clearing with his foot.

"Yes. Not to the death, obviously," Han reassured his team, putting his hand on Saya's tense shoulder.

"Rock Paper Scissors for who goes first?" Han asked, putting his hand out.

"Of course!" Maito Gai shouted. He threw out rock. Han threw out paper. Maito Gai groaned, but nodded.

"Saya, I recommend you go for the Hyuuga," Han whispered to her before patting her head and walking backwards to lean on a tree. Saya sweated. She was sheltered, but not that sheltered. Hyuugas were great close combat fighters and enclosed space like this played to their strengths.

Which oppponent do you face?

[ ] Hyuuga.

[ ] The scroll girl.

[ ] The mini me of Maito Gai.

1.7 That Went Well
[X] Hyuuga.

Saya decided to follow her teacher's advice and when the Hyuuga walked forward, she did too. Pulling out her short sword, she called out Budew.

"A summon?" The boy muttered, before sliding into a stance. She slid into a stance as well.

"Iwa Saya," She said, swallowing. She sure hoped sensei was right about this.

"What?" He asked, frowning.

"That's my name," Saya explained. He rolled his eyes, but spoke up despite himself.

"Neji," as if that settled it. She supposed it did. "You are fated to lose against me, nonetheless. I can tell your mediocrity from the way you walk."

Hey! Only Han sensei got to say that!

"When this rock hits the floor, the match starts," Han called out, lazily throwing a rock up and down in his palm. He dropped it and-

The Hyuuga was fast, much to her awe. She was fortunate that Han was faster in their spars and she squeaked out a, "Stun spore!"

Budew released a cloud of yellow spores that she already knew not to breath in as she dodged to the side. Neji was not so lucky, and his muscles locked up as he breathed it in. Saya was already maneuvering herself around him as he jerkily pulled himself to the side.

"The stun spore is potent, but not deadly Maito Gai. Though I wouldn't recommend letting your student get another dose of that unless you're hiding a medic nin somewhere," Han called out. Saya just had to play the waiting game now as his muscles would tear themselves in vicious cramps. She also got the hidden message in his words. Don't use it again unless she wanted to cause a diplomatic incident. Stun spore was ridiculously potent to the point he didn't let her use it against her teammates for real, citing the reasons he didn't want to drag them to the hospital after every training session.

"Yosh! Fan the flames of your youth Neji!!" Gai cheered even as he acknowledge Han with a nod. Neji seemed to burst at her suddenly, as he must have known poisons tended to get worse the longer they went on. His movements weren't as elegant as before and she got the feeling he was missing a lot, but she felt her chakra start to shut down the more he hit her. He must have been in agony, she noted as she brought up her sword. She was in a lot of pain and pretty sure she couldn't use chakra, but he fell down to one knee as she brought her sword to his neck.

"I-I cannot go on," He muttered, in disbelief. Budew suddenly started glowing at his words. To her amazement, it evolved just like the ancient Pokedex said it would!

"Your student's summon is most youthful! To grow into a beautiful flower after a friendly match!!" Maito Gai shouted. Saya was grinning ear to ear as she hugged Roselia.

" ... huh," Han said. "Sousen, get the tea for the Hyuuga."

Sousen handed Saya's homemade tea packets to the still shocked boy.

"For your muscles," Sousen explained. Saya had made them with Budew, well, Roselia's buds and it counteracted the stun spore effect quite well. The Hyuuga reluctantly accepted it.

"Tenten, show them the power of your youth!!!" The girl looked embarrassed as she went to stand across from Ganjobu. He had been working with sensei with earth ninjutsu if she recalled correctly.

Ganjobu slammed a smoke bomb against the ground once it started, causing the field to disappear in smoke. Sousen seemed to be following the fight quite well though and winced as Ganjobu got torn out of the smoke by a giant hammer and over the line.

"Match over!" Han called out. "Looks like we're one to one, Maito Gai."

"The springtime of their youth is not over! Lee, show them the fruits of your training!!" Lee stepped into the ring across a very reluctant Sousen. Saya remembered Han going over basic medic ninjutsu and genjutsu with him. He had always been in the upper percentile of chakra control in the class.

"Do we really have to do this sensei?" Sousen asked, stuffing his hands in his jackets.

"Yes." Han said and dropped the rock.

Sousen sighed, and shimmered out of existence. Lee started looking around before putting his hands together in the classic genjutsu dispellment pose. Sousen broke into view suddenly with two bunshins, one on each side, and Lee started to do complex fight combinations that Sousen started ... dodging?

Saya blinked. Sousen had never been that fast.

Wait. Oh.

The fight ended with Lee side kicking himself out of the ring. He blinked as he realized he just dented a tree and drooped as he realized he was tricked.

"DO NOT LET THE FLAMES OF YOUR YOUTH BANK BECAUSE OF GENJUTSU LEE, FOR WHEN WE GET BACK TO KONOHA WE SHALL DO A THOUSAND GENJUTSU EXERCISES!!"

Han quietly collected the unconscious man and left the leaf eccentrics to do their ... thing.

---

When they got back to Iwa, the genins found no rest.

"What do you mean, we're being sent on another mission? We just got back from one." Han said, growling. The chunin bristled with fear and anger.

"The village cannot wait for you to baby sit a genin team and wait for them to make chunin. Take the mission or take it up with the Tsuchikage," he snapped back before retreating. Han glared at his back before ripping open the debrief.

"Oh fucking hell," he muttered.

What's the mission?

[ ] Escort food supplies through a dangerous part of the mountains from huge beasts gorged on chakra.

[ ] There has been another defection and you are to kill a jonin spiriting away a valuable bloodline asset.

[ ] There has been a Iwa noble who made unwise remarks about the village. Assassinate their child.

[X] [SPECIAL] The nin you brought in had some interesting intel on Otogakure. Take in more three shinobi from the village to interrogate.

[X] Spearow

Spearow was a great addition to the team. With her plain looks and wicked intelligence, Spearow was excellent at scouting, sending messages, and being a very good birb. However, Saya could tell her sensei had a bad feeling about this mission. So did her mother.

"Oh Saya!" she burst into tears upon seeing her, which was strange. Her mom was tough half blind woman who helped keep the clan together. "Take the Stone diary before you leave. Arceus sent me a vision that you will not return from your mission."

"W-what?" Saya said, breathless. The last time Mother had a vision was when her older brother ...

"Take it! You will need it!" Saya's mother pressed the blocky metal tablet into her hands. "Just promise me you won't die."

"I ... I promise mom."

Saya swallowed.

---

The trip was long. Two weeks of constant travel from rocky hills to the trees of Konoha. They gambled (due to Ganjobu's habits) and trained as much as they could in between, but there was a tension in the air despite Han's attempts at keeping it light hearted. They arrived at the perimeter of Otogakure, a village in the caves and dark. Han didn't let them go inside, saying that the inside was a maze apparently and they could get lost easily. Keeping a patrol along the outside, they caught their first shinobi and tied them up for interrogation. The next one was the same easy effort. The third was when they ran into problems.

They were stalking the young woman who was leaping through the forest when in the next moment, Sousen was gone. They all instantly did the kai sign, but nothing changed and the young woman had disappeared as well.

They stopped on a large tree branch as Saya pulled off Spearow's ball, prepared to throw it to find Sousen.

Han snarled as Orochimaru of the Sannin stepped out into view with a kunai lazily held to Sousen's throat.

"Hello Han of the Five Tails," Orochimaru said. "Why are you doing something as banal as a genin team?"

"Sensei-," Sousen whimpered.

"Shhh, the adults are talking." Orochimaru whispered, suddenly holding the kunai closer.

"What do you want?" Han said coldly.

"Imagine my surprise when I found you and your cute genins skulking around the perimeter. Join my village, Han. They'll welcome you with open arms, unlike Iwagakure." He said silkily.

Han scoffed. "There is no where on earth that is welcome to a jinchuriki. We live a cursed existence Orochimaru."

"Oh I think you'll find Otogakure is more open minded than that." Orochimaru sighed. "But if that's a no ... "

He pressed the kunai deep enough into Sousen to draw blood.

"Stop!" Saya yelled, tears in her eyes. Han was suddenly in front of her, blocking her from view.

"You care for one of them? How positively intriguing." Orochimaru said.

"S-sensei, no, you can't just run with Saya!" Ganjobu cried out. Saya didn't know what face sensei was making, but it was making Ganjobu the most afraid she's seen ever.

What does Saya say?

[ ] I'm sorry ... [RUN AWAY ROUTE, ABANDON YOUR TEAMMATES, DEFY ARCEUS]

1.9 Death, Despair, and Grief
(Try to make better choices guys. I was going to kill them all off, but one of the players convinced me against it.)

[X] Fight him sensei! [NO SURVIVORS ROUTE, ???, THE PROPHECY DAMNS]

"Fight him sensei!" Saya cried out. Han hesitated for a moment before an explosion of chakra exploded from him. Saya is blown away and landed on her feet to see Sousen's throat cut and his body thrown to the side like garbage. Five giant tails of chakra develop from him as he leapt toward Orochimaru who pulled out a sword. In her peripheral vision, Ganjobu dove into the dirt and disappeared. Avoiding the giant blasts of chakra, she found Sousen lying down in a pool of his own blood. She fell to her knees and grabbed his hand as he looked her in the eyes.

"I'm so sorry, Sousen," she said, regretting her words. He just weakly squeezed once before his eyes turned glassy and his chest became still.

Feeling numb, she pulled out a scroll and sealed the body with shaking hands. His family would want the body. She turned to look at the incredible battle to her side and an idea came to her. She pulled out Roselia and turned to the fearful pokemon who watched the battle with dread. She was trying to ignore that her sensei was losing. He was slowing down with every cut Orochimaru dealt him while the sannin danced around his attacks.

"Use growth as much as you can Roselia and then use Magical Leaf on Orochimaru," she explained, shaking. This was crazy. She felt in the pit of her stomach that she was going to die. Roselia grew and grew and grew before becoming a foot taller in size and radiating an awesome energy.

Then she struck, with three giant leaves of energy, that seemed to follow Orochimaru despite his attempts to dodge and his wind jutsu only knocked out two of the leaves. The sole leaf sliced through his arm, falling to the grassy loam floor of the forest. He raised his eyebrows as he turned his attention to Saya. She froze as his killing intent pinned her to the ground. He was still fighting Han, but was acting more defensively now that he was missing an arm.

"My oh my, jinchuriki, your genin has claws," He said. "Hm, it seems we're at an impasse. I could kill you, but it'd be far too much work without my arm."

He suddenly kicked Han away and towards Saya who was saved by Roselia.

"Leave. Tell your Tsuchikage that if he steps here I'll kill him," Orochimaru promised. Han snarled, but Saya plunged her arm into the boiling chakra despite the pain and grabbed his shirt.

"Sensei, please," Saya whispered. Han stilled before turning back to normal and scooping Saya into his arms. Leaving warily, they found Ganjobu unconscious on the way out, missing his arm. The stump was sealed like it was boiled.

---

Saya felt nothing. There was a cotton ball sealing her emotions away as she gave Sousen's body to his mother and aunts. The image of his stoic mother burying herself in her hands and weeping would be burned into her mind. Ganjobu would never be able to become a ninja without an arm. When she tried to visit him in the hospital, he tried to kill her, blaming Han all the while. Han dragged her with him to a meeting with the Tsuchikage even though she just wanted to sleep forever.

"What the fuck was that mission Onoki!?" Han shouted.

"Language, nephew. This is mission report, not a bar," Onoki said, not even looking up from his paperwork.

"You bastard, you sent us there to die!" He snapped.

"An interesting conclusion," He replied back, putting a file in the inbox.

"Orochimaru knew we were coming! How dare you endanger the lives of your shinobi like this!" Han ranted.

"You were going to be fine." Onoki waved him off.

"But we weren't, were we?" Saya said quietly. Onoki stilled.

"An interesting conclusion, Iwa," Onoki warned. Saya shrunk in on herself, before Han placed himself in front of her.

"You're not going to hurt any more of my genin," Han promised.

"Oh? But that was your folly, nephew. You chose to attack, forcing Orochimaru to kill Ruito. You chose to use the chakra blasts that ended Wataru's career." Han flinched at the words, his hands curling into fists. "Frankly, your judgment is not sound. Your remaining genin will be put in a new team-,"

"No. She stays with me. As my apprentice." Han snapped.

"I'm the judge of that," Onoki warned. The tension in the air thickened as Han stared down at him. "Do you really want to start a fight over this girl?"

"Exactly. Is it really worth it, Onoki?" Han asked. Onoki considered this before sighing.

"Very well, I suppose so. She'll still be put with a team when the chuunin exams come, but she can stay as your apprentice," Onoki said, waving him away. Saya and Han walked out the door. She took five steps towards the mission desk and vomited into their trashcan, much to their distaste. Han quickly hurried her out and they went to the usual training spot.

"I ... How could the Tsuchikage do that to us?" Saya whispered, hugging her knees as Spearow and Roselia tried to comfort her.

"You were never supposed to pass. A jinchuuriki isn't supposed to be doing D-ranks or even C-ranks." Han said, nursing a jug of alcohol. "And it was useful. We found out Orochimaru is the kage of the Otogakure."

Useful. Saya never found the word horrifying until now.

---

Saya stared numbly at the two genins in front of her. They were Kyoko and Ryouga. Both of them didn't like her from the look of it and especially didn't care for sensei. They even still had their own sensei, they just had lost their third teammate.

Han said she didn't have to make friends with them, as she just needed them for the chuunin exams.

Saya was reaching the point with genjutsu that she was getting limited dividends. Thankfully, genjutsu was an art that was grown from imagination. However training Roselia and Spearow was going well. Roselia learned some more new moves and Spearow was getting close to evolving, she could tell. They trained drills together until they couldn't move and Saya promised, promised it wouldn't happen again.

She arranged a dinner with all of her team, on the promise she'd buy. It was a good restaurant and they all sat down, looking at each other uncomfortably. Kyoko pulled back her purple locks primly while Ryouga adjusted his curly brown hair.

"So, Kyoko, what's your specialty?" Saya asked, with fake cheer.

"I'm an sabotage specialist that uses explosive tags. You need me to get inside and blow shit up, that's me." she said, looking at the menu. "Look, Iwa, we're only here because you promised you'd pay. We already have a sensei and it's not him."

Saya ignored her. "Ryouga what's your specialty?"

"I uh, like taijutsu and medical ninjutsu?" Ryouga said shyly.

"Han, you should tell them about your specialty," Saya encouraged, the uncomfortable man. He sighed before speaking.

"I'm a taijutsu specialist that uses steam jutsu," Han explained. "I could probably help your taijutsu Ryouga."

"Oh, that'd be nice," Ryouga said, brightening up. Kyoko kicked him under the table. "But, um."

"We can keep it discreet," Han said, sighing.

"What?"

"If you haven't notice Iwa, your reputation is in the dumpster because of your sensei," Kyoko said acidly. Saya did recall people giving her a wide berth at the market these days. "We rather not get dragged down with you."

Saya glared at her at last. "Can't you be nice?"

"I'm not going to let you pretend to be our new teammate. Natsuo was our teammate, not you." Kyoko snapped out.

"Food's here!" Ryouga said hurriedly, as steaming hot piles of food was delivered.

They ate in stony silence.
