You held the cellphone so that Aka could see it. "What is that?" She asked. "Another trick?"

You smiled and broke the genjutsu, pressing the call button.

Explosions ripped through the building, dozens of explosives exploding in clear smokeless fireballs. The smell of plastic explosives filled the air.

Aka's disappeared behind the thick cloud, and any attempt of her seals and throwing weapons to find you only hit the wall.

The civilians, however, were screaming in terror, pushing their way out of the concert halls main doors. Pushing you out with them.

And in the crowd, you disappeared.

Sakumo met you outside of the town, dressed in his jounin uniform. "Ayako, everything okay?"

You nodded, before casting a genjutsu. "Yeah. Ran into Aka the Red Wave again."

Sakumo sighed. "Again. Seriously, you'd think she'd give up after you made her punch herself in the face a thousand times." He then threw over your uniform.

He even got the wrinkles out of it. Thanks, Sakumo. "We need to get moving. We might meet Yoshi on the way back to the Village."

"Did the Hokage make him go on another Suicide mission?" You asked sarcastically.

Sakumo frowned. "No. just a border patrol mission." The joke clearly making him upset.

"Hey. He'll be fine. He's got Dai watching his back." You replied.

Sakumo sighed. "I know."

You got back into your uniform and took a deep breath. "Let's go home."

It had been a long few months since the Village attack. Sure no one died directly in the attack, but the aftermath of the attack, with hunter teams harassing the enemy back across the border, along with the border rats not getting any help for a week… There were bodies that had to be buried or burned when it was all over.

Sakumo's father was among them, somehow taking over one hundred ninja with him as he and a dozen shadow clones detonated a thousand explosive tags, creating a wall of fire and death.

There was hardly a body to bury, when his team brought him back to the village, nothing more than a torso and a mangled head attached to sinew and bone.

Sakumo had broke… but only for a little while. Between the Crusaders and Might Dai, he bounced back from his funk of depression… though he was a bit more somber than he was before… a bit more cautious during missions and a bit more protective of the crusaders when you all were with him.

But that was it. He was still his normal self.

You met Danzo-Sensei at the border treehouse, along with a few members of the border rats resting after a long patrol. "Danzo!" Sakumo was quite surprised to see your teacher in the field. "I thought you were in the village?"

Danzo had a sour look on his face. "The border patrol was short-handed, so I was sent to relive a few of the injured."

"Anyone hurt?" You asked.

Danzo nodded. "No, but we do have some intel we need to send to the Hokage." He looked to one of the Rats, who threw down a scroll. A large one, big enough to hold a body in it. "Do you mind if you take this with you?"

"Of course," Sakumo replied, catching the Scroll and put it onto his back. "What's in it?"

Danzo gave a smirk, showing genuine emotion. That was something he only ever showed around Mordred… or when he did something he felt warranted it. "Someone who the Hokage really wants to meet."

Oh… that means Danzo and the rats bagged a high ranking badass from the enemies.

Good for them…. Wait a second…

"And is there anything else?" You asked. "Any crazy bastards trying to hunt us down because we happen to capture a high ranking badass?"

Danzo was not amused. "Do you really think we are that careless as to leave a trace of our attack on the enemy?"

Well, this was the border patrol he was with, and they were known for making huge explosions while trying to kill as many people as possible to keep the borders secure… "Yes."

Danzo frowned, going back to his normal grumpy self. "Get out of here."

You and Sakumo Saluted the Jounin, and then started to run towards the village.

"He was in a good mood." You stated.

Sakumo frowned. "He looked like he wanted to kill you."

You smiled. "That just shows you that he cares."

You arrived in the village a few hours later.

"I'll take the scroll to the Hokage, and pick up the paycheck, and meet you at your house. Wanna come with?"

    You rolled your eyes. "Might as well." You said as you thought back to all the crazy shit that happened the last time you were left to your own devices. Trying to drag Tsunade to a Hot Springs to relax was something that left you more drained than the mission with Aka.

    Sakumo shrugged and you both walked to the Hokage's office.

    With the village on the war footing, much of the paperwork nin were out in the front line, leaving the office with a skeleton crew to make sure missions not vital to the war were distributed to the genin and injured ninja who couldn't get to the front lines or were told to stay in the village.

    As you reached the office of the Hokage, you could see the ANBU guard boys and girls hiding… and being the good jounin you are, noticed them immediately.

    However, when you stepped in, you were not the only one in the room.

    It seems Masamune, the Fire Daimyo, and Iwa's diplomatic representative Oonoki was there as well.

    "I told you that the border can't handle any more raids," Masamune stated. "The Lightning Daimyo is looking at this entire cluster fuck of war and sensing an opportunity to take over."

    "I understand that." the Hokage stated. "But we need to keep baiting the enemy into attacking targets where we will be able to destroy them." He handed over a stack of reports. "Over two thousand enemy ninja's dead in this month alone. 50 of them jounin, and not easily replaceable ones at that. We just need time to bleed them dry until they lose the will to fight."

    "And how long do you think that will take?" Masamune asked. "I've got thousands of refugees who are getting angry, and are ready to riot in the streets of my capital if this war isn't over soon."

    "Time is not on their side," Oonoki stated. "We have five hundred ninjas trying to get through Grass right now to reinforce the front lines with more on its way, and unless Kiri decides to risk it all and send its entire fleet to the land of Earth and attempt and attempt an amphibious invasion, you will have a steady stream of supplies and manpower."

    Masamune sighed. "And you are just doing that without any reward?"

    Oonoki smiled. "I'm sure that the enemy nations will repay the debts that this war is costing us all. Along with much more."

    Masamune stood up and tapped his sword. "I hope you will keep me updated, Hiruzen."

    The Hokage nodded. "I will try. Stay safe."

    Masamune nodded and looked at Oonoki. "I hope you are right, otherwise I might send Stone the bill."

    The joke was not lost on Oonoki. "And I shall send it right to Iwa."

    The Hokage than noticed you and Sakumo were through the door. "Ah, Ayako, Sakumo. Please come in." The Hokage dropped his serious war demeanor and returned to his… teacherly/fatherly tone. Probably because he knew he could let his guard down now. "I hope the mission wasn't too difficult."

    Sakumo nodded, as Masamune and Oonoki left the office. "It wasn't though Ayako ran into Aka again, and we have confirmed that Goro Kenji is still alive."

    The Hokage's face frowned. "Was the mission compromised?"

    "No, the mission was a success, the Kumo Merchant Guild is now down one very wealthy backer, as his inheritance is split between his two Rounin sons in Iron, as he died at the hands of a Kumo nin." Sakumo replied.

    The Hokage nodded and looked at you. "Anything to Report Ayako?"

    You nodded no.

    Taking that as an acceptable answer he sighed. "Take a few days off and report back here for another mission."

    You both bowed silently and left without another word.

    When you got home to the Kuruma clan compound, your mother was waiting for you in the living room, stacks of papers littered all around the table.

    "Are you okay mom?" You asked as you cast your genjutsu around the house. "Clan duties killing you yet?"

    "Every day Ayako." Your mother replied. "But it's better than having to worry about you and Shiro every day… Because I know Orochimaru is looking out for you."

    Ah yes, the snake boy who was now for all intents and purposes, your adopted brother… and an overprotective one at that. "What did Orochimaru do this time?"

    "He taught his team how to use Shadow clones today… I'm very happy for them." Your mother stated.

    "But what about the paperwork?" You asked.

    "Oh you know, just getting it ready to be burned." your mother replied with a smile.

    "Mom, those are the expense reports." you stated.

    "I know."

    Oh no. "Mom we need those for the clan's taxes!" You exclaimed.

    "I know." She said in a sing-song voice as she started to make hand signs.

    You then noticed the empty teapot beside her cup and realized what was wrong. "Dad! TEA!"

    "Honey! Tea's Ready!" Your father's voice shouted.

    Your mother's murderous glee for destroying paperwork was now gone, as she slumped back onto the floor. Your father came running out of the kitchen with a nice hot pot of tea. "Finally some damn service around here!" She shouted as she poured and took a sip of the piping hot tea. "Ahh."

    "A long day with no tea?" You asked your father.

    "Yep. I was on guard duty this morning." Your father replied with a sigh. "Didn't know she was out until I got home."

    "You know we should really hire someone for that." You offered.

    "In wartime, with Hokage's war taxes on missions?" Your father shot back.

    You shrugged. God dammit. "Fine. After the war."

    "Oh Ayako, we also need to talk." Your mother said. "Now."

    You sat down and saw your mother look at you. "Okay, about what?"

    "The Clan Elders had an idea… and against my better judgment and lack of options, I agreed with them." Your mother stated.

    Oh shit, mom and the clan elders agreeing on something… better call Orochimaru and find out who's blackmailing mom... that never happens.

    "What's going on?" You asked.

    "The Clan has been far too insular for the past decades since we joined the village. Our family's fertility problems have been linked to generations of interbreeding, along with our dangerous bloodline. We have a solution to our problem that Hokage has agreed to." Your mother started.

    "Okay… What's the plan?" You asked.

    "We are arranging a marriage for you." Your mother stated.

    Oh… OH! "OH HELL NO!" You stood up and pointed at your mother. "I am not going to be used as some breeding tool for the clan so that we can have more members!"

    "I never said that. And I took into account that you may want a choice in the matter." Your mother than slide over files. "The final choice is up to you."

    Aren't they all from civilian families? I would have though we'd only be going after clan matches, if you've got to do a marriage may as well get extra favours out of it.

    Guys just realised Ayako is still 14, if anyones going to war be super careful, the mods might be okay with betrothal understanding that the actual marrige is dated when the pair aren't minors however maintain a safe and respectful distance from anything Jiraya would do.

    As the invasion has shown, the hawks are an incredible force multiplier.

    Genjutsu and taijutsu to keep on top of the competition.

    Elemental ninjutsu are rather pointless with our bloodline and trying to catch up to jounin level is pointless, but there's a lot of utility in non-elemental techniques.

    We promised Kagami, could use some relaxation with Nanako, need to interrogate one of our brothers about the other, should supervise Yoshi so he doesn't permanently damage his own body, ought to help our friendly rival Tsunade, and need to talk with our betrothed.
