That doesn't make any sense, though. The objects still has it's previous momentum and vector. Objects aren't "pulled along" by the Earth. Rather, the mass of the Earth and everything on it is all orbiting the Sun together. What actually matters here is canceling out the gravity of the Sun, not the gravity of the Earth.
Since Gravity is a force it would also only cause an acceleration rather than an instantaneous change in velocity. And since it travels at the speed of light his power wouldn't do anything for eight minutes after he first activates it.

At it's core, when Alex gets that speed is because he removes the effect of the earth's gravity on an object.

So, it has nothing to hold it down. Laws of momentum and acceleration says that even though an object at rest but still inside an object that is moving, it is still going the same speed as that object which is moving. Once it is no longer held down by that object, or is ejected from that object like being thrown from a moving car, it continues to move at that speed.

The speed of the earth as it flies through space is 430 meters per second, roughly 67,000 mph. That is where I get the number as a base.
But the sun orbits the center of the Milky Way, so shouldn't things go flying at around 828,000 km/hr?

Actually, since the Milky Way moves around 2.1 million km/hr, shouldn't that be the speed things go flying?

Eh. Not really.

Let's make it simple on ourselves and just use G acceleration. (9.81m/s squared) And then simply increase the G Forces.

Acceleration= change in velocity/time

I'm not going to do the math but just one G given some time and a solidly heavy object can level a city and we've demonstrated gravitational forces far beyond that.

In terms of raw destructive power There's no one on our earth that can match us save Scion and mr " I can have your power and two others"

...
So what you are saying is that his power could actually cause an object to burrow into the earth at 67,000mph if he's standing on the face of the earth with is perpendicular to the direction that the earth is travelling?

I think we might need a discussion about how inertial reference frames and momentum works.

You know I'll just save you the effort @IKnowNothing

Obviously.

... actually, I feel more like this.

I have a base understanding of gravity and it's effects, so I tried to reason out the logic of it with my knowledge and what I could get my hands on.

Obviously, I wasn't asking the right questions. I didn't take everything into account before I started this quest.

For this, I apologize.

I will be going through my story notes and rectifying this change.

I think, in the back of my head, I was working with this, but just misunderstood the concept.

I'm sorry for the confusion I've caused, and I will work to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I fully admit, I am an idiot. Right here, right now, I have truly earned my name of I Know Nothing. I have a base understanding of gravity and it's effects, so I tried to reason out the logic of it with my knowledge and what I could get my hands on.

You are seriously overreacting.
As I said when I started this chain, I recognised the bizarre behaviour when it first showed up however I chose to ignore it because its not the worst understanding of physics I've seen in a superhero universe by far.
It can keep happening and still work as you've been doing it, just, if someone asks say 'my universe my rules.'.

Pretty much this. I mean there are lasers that can goddamn well change direction at will in Worm.

Ultimately all that matters is that the PC can cause objects or parts of objects to undergo arbitrarily large acceleration in any direction he pleases at any intensity he pleases. If he chooses, there will be no strain on any part of the object other than air resistance (which he could potentially alleviate by moving the air as well. He can can also hold things in place.

I'd suggest concentrating on the next update rather than fiddly power details.

... I have a damn tear in my eye right now guys.

Confession, I had a bad experience when I first started writing in the WORM verse. I won't go into details, but I was basically ran out of the thread for not understanding something as well as I should.

It left a bad taste in my writing, and as such whenever I hear that my understanding is wrong, I overreact in an attempt to try and get things right.

Seeing you guys accept that... is heartwarming.

Thanks.

First of all you're now overreacting in the other direction.
Secondly, you were ran out of your own thread? Unless you were writing a story in which Nazis were justified in the Holocaust because they were genetically predisposed to having powers however Jews were not I have a hard time imagining it.
Thirdly, this is your story and theres not really an answer to the argument Shard Shenanigans if the OP posts it. I mean, even if Wildbow came in to argue it doesn't work that way, this just becomes an... more AU.

Well, one of these days I'll find the balance between the extremes.

Secondly, you were ran out of your own thread? Unless you were writing a story in which Nazis were justified in the Holocaust because they were genetically predisposed to having powers however Jews were not I have a hard time imagining it.

It wasn't my thread, it was an RP thread in another site. I put together a character, thought I had everything under control. And when I started messing things up, the other players drove me out.

Thirdly, this is your story and theres not really an answer to the argument Shard Shenanigans if the OP posts it. I mean, even if Wildbow came in to argue it doesn't work that way, this just becomes an... more AU.

I really need to remind myself that more often. My story, my rules and all that.

You control the rules and you decide the physics of your quest. Hell if you want to make it so that pigs can fly in this universe, you go ahead and do it!!!

[Q] Remove gravity from pigs.

.....

It's beautiful....

Ok, so I read this and this is the first thing that popped into my head.

"Doctor Manton, do you mind teaching me the specifics of pera-human psychology? I'd like to learn more about them for my major."

"I will gladly tell you all that I know, when pigs fly."

*One hours later*

Manton looks out his office window, and sees Atlas with some flying pigs.

"... I loath your very existence right now."

On that note, Alex's understanding of physics due to his Shard's senses might make him the foremost expert in Physics. Maybe he should pursue that as a career.

I've actually noticed that Alex seems to be able to understand the machinery and everything around him.
Maybe one of his lesser abilities is the abilty to understand, like Sylar in Heroes?

Honestly, as long as it's cool enough/bullshitted well enough, I will read anything.
If I wanted the exact math and physics and all that, I would have taken those college courses.

Honestly, I'm embarrassed over that reaction. I need to stop being critical of myself and remember that I'm the one running things.

To be honest, i find our powers more boring every time we learn that they are stronger than previously though, as we rapidly approach territory where we either outright win or lose, without actually interacting much with opponents.

I would find simple large scale telekinesis to be much more interesting than what we have now. Larger is not necessarily better.
