Scientia Weaponizes The Future

There are already many instances where things could have gone wrong in case of an inexact replica. For example:

Taylor: "If you need help pushing for improved access to mental health resources for Wards, you could try sounding out the Youth Guard for their support."
Carol: "Youth Guard? I am sorry, Taylor, but what are you talking about?"
I think Taylor looked them up earlier, but I may be mixing fics up.

You know, Taylor should've gotten that X-ray, and Armsmaster should've found a way to sneak in a Tinker-based MRI while that was happening. Proof-positive that Taylor isn't actually a Parahuman is invaluable, even if Taylor has already had one. This one, they couldn't claim was tampered with.

She would have had to have tampered with the original while unconscious, somehow. Or altered the records. I'm not sure that degree of paranoia is really called for based on what they know so far.

Also, doing secret medical scans on people to possibly unmask them is frowned upon for a bunch of reasons. I suspect they couldn't legally approve something like that, and they probably wouldn't be inclined to do it in secret without a really good reason. Maybe if they suspected someone of being a mass murderer or something.

Err...

You've actually read Worm, right?

There are indeed a fair number of examples of PRT/Protectorate behaving badly in canon. Alexandria and Tagg when they confront Skitter, Armsmaster's actions that lead to his disgrace.

But that's misbehavior. Even then, all three justify their actions as necessary to deal with some sort of extraordinary threat. It's not a good reflection of standard policy, the sort of thing the public, the courts, and the government proper would likely be inclined to allow.

Breaking the rules for a girl who's done nothing illegal with suspiciously good martial arts skills? The risk/reward ratio doesn't make sense.

It's been mentioned that she has Taylor's memories, and the Youth Guard aren't exactly a secret organization. So any divergences are small enough that she hasn't noticed them yet.

Especially now that Sophia's gone off her rocker and attacked someone on video. The PRT actually has information and incentive to take action, and Shadow Stalker really isn't that strong or useful in the first place.

My new guess regarding her spending a charge on firearms is that she's prepping for a potential attack by Sophia, rather than some desperate emergency move. Maybe Danny wants to buy a gun or something.

For once the youth guard can be of use. It is deliciously ironic that Taylor is using them to attack the PRT with pressure to have mental health checks. That should be something everyone from Piggot and Armsmaster to Kid Win to Gallant need urgently.

Nice update. After so long, you finally update. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work

It's oddly flattering that people enjoy the story enough to complain. So thank you, genuinely.

Perhaps I should maximize reader torture in the future. Maybe I can hire George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss to give me lessons...

Since it sounds like a teaser would be appreciated, though;

ANNOUNCER: "Next time on Scientia Weaponizes the Future, blood and death!" *cue dramatic music*

(I am a horrible, horrible person.)

Please no, a week of waiting for reading this good is long enough to be torturous.

Just don't become an expert at painful cliffhangers like some other authors I know about and we'll be fine. A cliffhanger every once in a while for drama's or story sake? Works fine.

Once a week updates work well though. Considering how many stories I'm following and how often they update, having another to add to the pile to relax and read every week is nice. Can usually wake up every day and have one or two new stories to follow.

God I love SB, SV, and even QQ for that alone.

Suspicion: that is an oddly specific example to use.
I just brought it up because it would satisfy the promise of blood and death while completely subverting the audience's expectations, and I thought it was funny, but I can't use it because this isn't really the sort of humor fic that messes with the audience that way.

Mentioning it in the thread means it at least gets a good laugh despite not being usable in story.

I won't hold my breath but this carol doesn't seem as bad as others.
Carol is an interesting character. She has serious flaws, but there are also things about her - her legal practice, her heroism, her ideals - that are admirable.

It's too easy to flanderize her as a bad mother who just hates Amy and nothing more, but that's doing her a disservice, I think. She's much more complex than that.

True. I suppose I'm just too used to people making her a complete bitch.

You know, I just realized something.

Cauldron, when they review this situation if it blows up big enough? Seeing her as a non-parahuman that did all that...

Doctor Mother is going to want to get this girl a vial. Hell. Alexandria is probably going to take one look at her and want to either recruit her for the PRT or yeah... vial cape.

Either to try and get her under control by revealing she IS, in fact, a Parahuman(from the Vial)... or muuuch more likely... to recruit her to the Wards and eventually Protectorate. Because Taylor has shown a level of intellect and control that would make them ALL impressed.

But it depends on how big this blows up. Rebecca is going to be reviewing it whatever happens. And if the whole 'Rebecca was the one who demanded Shadow Stalker be made a Ward' thing is so in this timeline... heh. Fun times!

Given the OC knows about Worm as an out of context ability, I think it wouldn't make much sense for her to be in an AU world, especially since that hasn't been brought up as an issue. Typically, stories that bring canon knowledge into an AU bring it up very early as a conceit of the story itself, and this doesn't have that.

So I think we can all safely assume that this was running off of the stations of canon until Taylor Triggered (or in this case, got ROBbed -- at least, as far as she's aware; who knows what actually happened?).

I'm not positive, but I think someone needs a corona pollentia for a vial to have any effect. Whatever happened on locker day, the protagonist doesn't have one anymore.

Yeah, I'm doing my best to make sure that canon is canon up until the day of the locker.

As for who knows what actually happened, that's a good question.
