Correction: She doesn't have the knife.

She only has her bare hands, which are little worse than her knife.

If a pilot's AT-Field is all they need to bring down the Angel's AT-Field, what the heck is the point of giving these kids guns?
We've had a lot of angels that have been hard to kill even once their AT field drops. That's the part where we need weapons.

Once we weaken or destroy the field, we'll have to have weapons ready, but let's worry about actually getting to that point first (not for nothing I think if Shinji actually gets to attack with the sonic glaive that might be fine by itself).

Not saying weapons are useless, just that they aren't our top priority right now.

If this is not how the quest mechanics work, someone let me know (with proof ideally)

To my understanding, it's easier to tear through an AT field when you focus yours into a sharp point/cutting edge - and of course, you still need to kill the angel after it's vulnerable.

Certain weapons are also strong enough to outright break AT fields - the Positron Rifle, for one.

[X] Plan: Half Nelson But The Other Half
- [X] Shinji: Swap weapons with Rei, and harrass the Angel from range. Keep stalling it. Try to keep it pointed away from anything important.
- [X] Rei: Swap weapons with Shinji, grab the Naginata, and ferry it to Asuka. Help Hikari get plugged back in when you get there, then engage the Angel in melee with the Sonic Glaive.
- [X] Asuka: Keep trying to help Hikari out while Shinji brings the Naginata over, then switch to killing the Angel.
- [X] Hikari: Hold on until help arrives, then get the hell out of the lake and snipe at the Angel.
- [X] Have whatever NERV assets are in the area deploy smoke to confuse the Angel's targetting. When its AT Field goes down, if they have weapons, engage the Angel.

Yeah uh as we established earlier, a positron rifle isn't going to cut it. The issue was the speed at which we were dropping the AT field, we need at least 3 Eva's with AT field attacks if we're going to make headway. Eva's first, weapons later.

In addition, arming asuka with a melee weapon is pointless currently, because the AT field isn't down yet.
Most probably, you have to be in melee to really counter the angel's AT-Field. And I doubt that two Evas will be enough for this. So Asuka will have to go close anyway. So we can give her a proper weapon.
And, although it is a minor thing, Asuka may feel better if she has "her own" weapon.
I agree with what you're saying, for a conventional angel. This is not a conventional angel.
There is no such thing like "a conventional angel".
They just aren't going to matter enough to be a decisive factor in this fight. If they were, we would have won 3 turns ago.
Until AT-Field (which is multilayered here) is at least partially lowered, any attack is useless.
Also while Asuka is not receptive much to Rei now, I think that her willingness to help Hikari still is stronger than her disdain for Rei.

[X] Crossing the Red Sea
-[X] Use any means to create a smokescreen, tell pilots to use radar/infravision/any mode that does not rely purely on sight.
-[X] Orders for Rei: Take advantage of the smokescreen, and disengage. Go and assist Asuka with helping Hikari. Bring the naginata for Asuka if possible. If Asuka complains remind her that Hikari's safety is more important than interpersonal conflicts. Asuka knows this, she dived after Hikari. After helping them, attack Zophiel from range.
-[X] Orders for Asuka: Help Hikari to get out from the acid. After stabilizing the situation, take the naginata from Rei, and attack Zophiel in melee. Dispel AT Field, and kill the bastard.
-[X] Orders for Shinji: Continue fight in melee. If Zophiel tries to follow/attack the other pilots, prevent this by any means short of suicide. Dispel AT Field, and kill the bastard.
-[X] Orders for Hikari: Attack from range after she is out of the acid bath. Try to placate Asuka if necessary.

IIRC from episode 14, Evas have alternative modes of vision. Also, I am willing to give Asuka the benefit of the doubt and assume she intends to help Hikari, not to do something stupid.
