Questionably Soteriological: A Puzzle/Mystery Quest with Kids, Science, and Fun!

[X]EXAMINE the RECORD PLAYER.
-[X] If a RECORD is present PLAY it and then ROCK OUT WITH YOUR BAD SELF
The RECORD PLAYER looks OLD, but WELL-MAINTAINED, with tasteful gold trim. Set into the front of it is a ROUND PLATE bearing the MERCURY SYMBOL. You pull at it, but it won't come off. Unfortunately, there is no RECORD in the RECORD PLAYER. There is a note on the wall.
Writing on the wall said:
music music music will you play me a song? will you play the music of the spheres? will you play the hymns of angels? if music be the food of love then there is no music here
How... lovely.
[X] Examine THE PORTRAIT
-[X] Examine THE EYES
--[X] Examine what is behind THE PORTRAIT
The PORTRAIT is of the SAME RED-HAIRED MAN that you saw a portrait of in the CLOCK ROOM. He looks arrogant and superior, wearing the expression of someone who is used to being in control. Although the PORTRAIT is different, he wears the same GLASSES and LAB COAT.

There are SMALL HOLES in the EYES of the PORTRAIT. You peer through them only to have your gaze met by the lens of a CAMERA. Hello there.
Writing on the wall said:
the scientist. particle man. stop watching me. why is he doing this? where is he? the portraits of him are all needed to solve the puzzles what kind of egocentric god complex delusions of grandeur lunatic
[X] Take the portrait off the wall and throw it against the other one
Frustrated, you take the PORTRAIT down and HURL IT at the wall opposite. It bounces off disappointingly, but behind the PORTRAIT is a small ALCOVE, in which a CAMERA is mounted.
[X] Examine the GREEK STATUE
Your HIGH ACUMEN means that you recognize the god: this is a STATUE of POSEIDON. It's finely crafted from MARBLE, except for the CROWN HE WEARS and the TRIDENT HE HOLDS, both of which are made of either GOLD or something GOLD-PLATED.

[X] Examine the FANCY CHEST
The CHEST is made of THICK, SOLID WOOD and is firmly LOCKED with a LARGE SILVER PADLOCK. Knocking on it reveals it to be MOSTLY EMPTY.

key in a boxes in boxes in boxes in boxes that need keys. some kind of joke? i don't get their sense of humor.
[X] See if your nametag with the Saturn symbol is round
The NAMETAG on your clothing is rectangular, and far too small to possibly fit in any of the SLOTS IN THE WINDOW.

Hm. The door is our way out, and RED MARKER has marked it as such. However, the door is closed and locked, and RED MARKER did not go back. That can mean one of several things: RED MARKER did not have to solve a puzzle to go through the door, they took a different door that we haven't seen yet, or they're still here... somewhere. We'll have to check the other room to make sure.

Alternatively, they did have to solve the puzzle, but someone came back and reset it... without even trying to clean off the marker, apparently. I suppose it adds to the atmosphere.

Is it not strange that the statue is of Poseidon rather than Neptune?

It's kind of strange that the statue is Greek, yeah. Also, that it's depicting the eponymous god of a planet that isn't even on the STAINED GLASS WINDOW.

Can't think of much to do, but I want to finish examining this room before we go to the next, so... may as well see if RED MARKER is right about the portraits being needed.

[X] PICK UP the FALLEN PORTRAIT
[X] Use DFD on the PORTRAIT

[X] PICK UP the FALLEN PORTRAIT
[X] Use DFD on the PORTRAIT
The CLASS MACHINATION [DEDUCTION FOR DUMMIES] has been activated!
On the back of the portrait, someone has printed some SHEET MUSIC. There are FOUR NOTES: F, A, D, and E. Even more faintly is printed the title MOVEMENT 1.
[X] Attempt to claim the CROWN and TRIDENT from the GREEK STATUE of POSEIDON.
POSEIDON regards you with DISTINCT DISAPPROVAL. Okay, that's probably just your IMAGINATION. With some effort, your pull the TRIDENT from his grasp and use it to knock POSEIDON'S CROWN off his head!

If you were aware of MECHANICAL ABSTRACTIONS, which you most definitely are NOT, you would feel the urge to EQUIP the CROWN in your HEADGEAR GARB SLOT. But you aren't, so you feel no such urge.

[X] DFD the CROWN
[X] EQUIP the CROWN in your HEADGEAR GARB SLOT.

Also, musica universallis?

[X] Do you know how to play the 'music of the spheres'?

[X] DFD the TRIDENT and equip it as a weapon.
[X] Return to the other room and play the notes found on the portrait on the PIPE ORGAN.

(Were some items removed from our inventory when we reached the new puzzle? For instance the KEY we found earlier isn't in there.)

With HIGH ACUMEN, Lucy probably knows where the notes are on the organ. Interesting that it spells out FADE.

[X] If nothing interesting happens after playing the notes, ENTER the ORNATE DOOR ON THE RIGHT.

[X] DFD the CROWN
[X] EQUIP the CROWN in your HEADGEAR GARB SLOT.
The CROWN OF POSEIDON is HEAVY, a CIRCLE OF GOLD with a BLUE GEM set into it. You put it on your head, and feel it weighing down on you. Still you reckon it makes you seem a little but more imposing.
CROWN OF POSEIDON EQUIPPED! [+5 MOXIE, -5 NIMBLENESS]
[X] DFD the TRIDENT and equip it as a weapon.
The TRIDENT is long, thin, and almost worryingly sharp. It's surprisingly light, and is probably made of some other metal coated with gold rather than being 100% golden. You weigh it in your hands, and kind of like the feeling.
TRIDENT EQUIPPED! [+10% FISTICUFFS, +10% CRIT CHANCE, x2 REACH]
[X] Return to the other room and play the notes found on the portrait on the PIPE ORGAN.
You play the notes F, A, D, and E on the PIPE ORGAN. Nothing happens.
[X] If nothing interesting happens after playing the notes, ENTER the ORNATE DOOR ON THE RIGHT.
You enter the ORNATE DOOR and find yourself in another SIDE ROOM. Like the OTHER ONE, it is BETTER LIT than the MAIN ROOM, if still darker than you prefer. On the wall to your left is a DOOR with some sort of WALL-MOUNTED CAMERA next to it. Against the wall opposite you is a LARGE BOOKSHELF full of what appear to be TEXTBOOKS, next to a MICROPHONE STAND that is hooked up to SOME SORT OF MACHINE next to a STACK OF RECORDS. On the wall to your right is a PORTRAIT OF A RED-HAIRED GIRL overlooking a GLASS DISPLAY CASE.
[X] Do you know how to play the 'music of the spheres'?
You can't play any piece of music by that name!

God, keeping the character sheet accurately updated is hard.

So we've got a DOOR, some TEXTBOOKS, a MICROPHONE STAND and the MACHINE it's attached to, a STACK OF RECORDS, another PORTRAIT, and a GLASS DISPLAY CASE.

[Q] EXAMINE ALL THE THINGS!

In seriousness, though, this is gonna take a while.

[X] DFD the PORTRAIT OF A RED-HAIRED GIRL.
[X] EXAMINE the GLASS DISPLAY CASE it was hanging above before we took it.

Records go into the record player. Red haired girl has the next part of the music sheets; maybe we play the song on the microphone stand?

Also, bookcase is a big hiding place of clues, if not a whole secret doorway itself :D

[:V] Put your detective cap crown on and play 24 combinations on the organ.

Who says high ACUMEN must help solve puzzles and not bruteforce them?

It'll only take a couple of minutes... though maybe we need to examine the portrait of the girl before we do anything. They come in pairs, there must be some significance to it.
Then, around it, are THE MOON, MERCURY, VENUS, THE SUN, MARS, JUPITER, AND SATURN.
Seven notes, seven entities. A coincidence? Maybe.

No Neptune, though, I guess it was made into a statue. Where's Uranus then?

> Lucy: Examine a whole lot of things. (causticAccolade: cry at the length of this post)
[X] Examine PORTRAIT OF A RED-HAIRED GIRL.
This is definitely the SAME RED-HAIRED GIRL as you saw on the PORTRAIT in the CLOCK ROOM. She looks so... stuck-up and snobbish, wearing a condescending expression as if she views the painter with utter contempt. God, you want to punch this girl, even if you haven't met her.
Writing on the wall said:
who is she? i don't know. looks like the particles man, red girl, red man. his daughter? she looks unfriendly. stop watching me. stop, lady. rude.
[X] Take and DFD the records
If you were aware of MECHANICAL ABSTRACTIONS, you would protest that your INVENTORY was FULL. As is, you just decide to put down some of this STUFF you've been carrying. You CAREFULLY PILE the JOURNAL, CLOCK ROOM DRAWER KEY, SCREWDRIVER, and LONG-HANDLED NET in a corner of the room. You can always come and get them if you need them again, after all.

The CLASS MACHINATION [DEDUCTION FOR DUMMIES] has been activated!
The RECORDS are unmarked, and the careful examining of a JUNIOR SLEUTH tells you that they're also BLANK.
[X] Take the portrait off the wall
[X] DFD the PORTRAIT OF A RED-HAIRED GIRL.
You take the PORTRAIT OF A RED-HAIRED GIRL off the wall, resisting the urge to PUNCH it. Behind it is an ALCOVE containing a CAMERA. Hello there.

The CLASS MACHINATION [DEDUCTION FOR DUMMIES] has been activated!
On the back of this portrait are a few notes of sheet music: five notes this time, C, A, G, E, and D. They're labelled 'Movement 2'
The books are all RATHER TEDIOUS-LOOKING ACADEMIC TOMES on matters of THEOLOGY and PHILOSOPHY. Most of them are filled with RED MARKER SCRIBBLES - my, the person who holds that writing utensil has really been industrious. The only books that stand out from the rest are a HOLY BIBLE and a book that looks NEWER than the others - a book on ASTRONOMY by a Dr. Charles Brighton
[X] EXAMINE the GLASS DISPLAY CASE it was hanging above before we took it.
There's a small space between the GLASS LID and the BASE of the DISPLAY CASE - it looks like if you had a CROWBAR or something similar you would be able to FORCE IT OPEN. Inside the GLASS DISPLAY CASE is a ROUND PLATE bearing a JUPITER SYMBOL.
Writing on the wall said:
what do they make the glass out of why make glass so strong when they could use steel. trick question, trick question, want you to see it, a reward for good lab rats. i'm a rat, you're a rat, now run down the maze or get shocked little rat
Thanks.
[X] Examine/DFD SOME SORT OF MACHINE
The MACHINE seems to a VINYL PRESS, for RECORDING MUSIC on RECORDS. Isn't that cool! You can't remember ever having seen one of these, but given your LOVE OF MUSIC, just seeing one cheers you up a little. [+5 ÉLAN]
Writing on the wall said:
here it is. the small machine that makes the music. wow.
[X] Examine PIPE ORGAN
It's small - at least, as small as a PIPE ORGAN can get. There's a stool to sit at, and the usual rows of keys. Nothing really OUT OF THE ORDINARY-LOOKING about it. There is a space for SHEET MUSIC - two spaces, in fact, with the left one being marked MOVEMENT 2 and the second being marked MOVEMENT 1.

[X] Examine LARGE SILVER PADLOCK
The LARGE SILVER PADLOCK is LARGE and SILVER. You feel like you might need a KEY of some sort to open it, but that might just be you jumping to conclusions.

[X] Throw the infuriating portrait.
-[X] Stomp on it, just to rub in your point.
--[X] Spear it with the trident

[X] Pick up the screwdriver
-[X] Try to pry the glass display case open

[X] EXAMINE the ASTRONOMY BOOK
[X] Use DFD on the ASTRONOMY BOOK
