Putting the Craft in Warcraft

Seriously, building a merchant empire doesn't make much sense for a craftsman, that's more of a businessman goal.

Creating a legacy of unparalleled armaments and equipment, on the other hand, is.

The merchant empire sounds more fun. And he might be a craftsman but that doesn't exclude other motivations.

Edit -- Well, unless I'm missing something. I'm not very familiar with quests. Maybe Lost Star could say whether it's appropriate for a craftsmen to also be a merchant. I mean if he sells anything he would be considered a merchant.

Edit2 -- Thinking about it more. His levels are only in making stuff not economics, etc. Maybe you're right. Merchant Emperor still sounds more fun!

Merchant Emperor is possible. I'll even allow combat things if you really want it. But right now you are starting at a piddly little apprentice crafter :)

I don't see how merchant empire will be more fun in the long run. It'd be all about amassing wealth, and that in a medieval/renaissance society. There is no liberal economy of significant scale around. We'd have 0 influence or impact. Just look at the goblins, no faction gives a damn about them.

As a smith of legendary equipment we could join heroes or other factions, and accompany them as a blacksmith. Not only will we be involved in the plot, but we would also be acquainted with the only people brave/insane enough to travel into the most dangerous zones of the world, where the rarest materials with the most astonishing properties can be found. We might get involved in the creation of artifacts like Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros, or Thunderfury, the blessed blade of the Windseeker.

Rather than being a (fat?) merchant counting his money, I'd prefer to be the savant blacksmith, who creates unique pieces of equipment of incomparable quality. Why be the guy responsible for arming the legions of Stormwind, if you could be the guy who personally equipped the heroes responsible for saving the world?

Just seems like being the water boy. And we could still equip the heroes.. as long as they can pay and we get a percentage of the loot :eyebrow:

Each segment is 1/4 a days work. You can work 2 segments a day without gaining fatigue. 3/4 will give you +5 fatigue. 4/4 will give you +25. At 100 fatigue you will pass out for 2 days. Working one segment a day will reduce fatigue by 5 a day, and not working at all will give you back 10.
BTW @Lost Star, you might want to change the values (or at least introduce an oppurtunity cost for high fatigue or frequent pass outs) since there's a slight oddity with the current values.

For example let's say we work 4/4 4 days straight and pass out for two days (assuming we reset to 0 fatigue after we pass out).

That's 16 segments in 6 days with 0 fatigue.

In contrast 2/4 for 6 days is 12 segments.

And 3/4 for 22 days is 60 segments at 0 fatigue while 4/4 for 24 days is 64 at 0 fatigue and 2/4 for 24 days is 48 segments at 0 fatigue.

The end result is that 3/4 is tied with 4/4 but both will eventually have extended periods at high Fatigue and/or frequent pass outs with no reason so far to use the 2/4 or 1/4 or 0/4 for any reason what so ever

Will be handled in story. Doing that sort of thing isn't healthy. Though I will add the next part now since you brought it up.

High fatigue introduces a chance of messing up. I'll go ahead and add the rates.

:) Didn't want to overwhelm people right off with all the mechanics part.

[X] Wayland
[X] Blacksmithing and Enchanting
[X] To create the most powerful weapons, and the most resilient of armors. The kind which even the greatest heroes would wish to have.

Okay tentative plan would be

[] Finish Backlog of Jobs at 3/3/2/2
-[]Take the additional time on the last two days to socialise and have fun if at all possible.
-[] Find out the price of Low quality Iron jewelry, High quality Gold Jewelry, Low quality Steel Mace and where can we sell those two for what price.

Reasoning is that , in order.

This is the most efficient way to do our backlog
Learn more of the setting
The Iron Jewelry and Steel Mace are low quality so that they have a 0 segment completion time (probably changed to one) while the High Quality gold jewelry takes about 10 segments or 4 days to make. Both of which should help us grind our skills effectively

2
[X] Wayland
[X] Blacksmithing and Enchanting
[X] To create the most powerful weapons, and the most resilient of armors. The kind which even the greatest heroes would wish to have.

*Note, it takes 1 segment minimum to make something
Blacksmithing perks
-25 Reduces Bronze crafting time by 1
-50 Gives enhancement Golden Inlaid
-75 Reduces Iron crafting time by 1

Enchanting Perks
-25 Reduces Cost of all enchantments by .5
-50 Allows two enchanments to be done at 8 segments instead of 10
-75 Reduces Cost of all enchantments by 1

PS, 'grinding' skill is a time honored wow tradition, but I can safely say that doing a good, big project would be just as successful here ;)
----

"Wayland! Wayland!" The call makes you look up from the forge. You've been spending the past week slaving away at it. Horrid, and hot work, but you enjoy it quite a bit. Even if you have more than a few singes from the fires.

"Come-on Wayland, you been slavin' away all week." The boy walks in once he notices you done. "Ya'd think the crocks had gotten hold o' scent."

"Not everyon' can play soldier like you Leon." You drawl back as you look up at him.

And you have to look up. You are about average height for your age, but Leon has shot up like a beanpole. Worse, he's broad and strong too. In fact, out of all those in your age group, he's the only one that's actually got a decent look about him. (You are passable apparently. He's handsome.) You'd call him the posterboy for recruitment if he weren't dumb as a box o' rocks, and twice as stubborn.

"Thought you would want to know the Gobby's here." Leon mutters back and peers at your anvil. "Doin' arrowheads again?"

"Yeah, none o' the hunters care ta recover the things, or buy anything more than shitty copper ones." You shrug and set the few you have done down.

They are crappy things really. You use a mold to form them, and then pound them to something like an edge. You could do a lot better, but it's just not needed. The hunters here get by with them, and frankly they aren't paying you enough to do anything fancy. Even though you want to.

You pause as you start to leave and peer at Leon. You know the boy, he doesn't do anything 'nice'. He's a passible friend, but he's not particularly inclined to go out of his way for the most part. So, you are pretty certain he's got another motive for visiting you.

He squirms a bit under your look. "What do ya want? I know you were out in the fields hunting down some sort o' varmit. You wouldn't have seen the Merchant otherwise."

Leon finally nods. "I was wondering if you could make me a sword. Not a cheap one. A fancy one with lot o' trimmings."

You restrain a laugh. "Ya do know that's gonna cost a pretty gold piece right?"

"I got ten gold!" Leon thrusts out his chest in pride. "Been saving for years! I want ta go to the big city and become a soldier! I need a good sword for that."

Considering a good sword would be steel, or better Mithril or Thorium, that's not nearly enough. Adding time costs to that, and well. You would maybe break even, if you did it in your free time.

"I dunno." You don't say no to his face.

"Come on Wayland." The boy pleads just a bit. "I need a good sword. You know what chance I got around here. The best girl around is Shirley, and she's already gonna marry the Mayor's boy. I ain't gonna marry Gracie."

That does make you wince. Gracie is probably the ugliest girl in the village. And her personality is if anything worse. Unfortunately she's also one of the only available girls in your age group.

"Gotta think about it." You finally sigh. "I'll try somethin'."

Leon slaps you hard on the back, and you stagger and glare as the boy trots off.

Grumbling, you head towards the Goblin Merchant. Short and Green, with a massive nose, and a large wagon. Normally you'd call him crazy to go through the swamps alone, but he's got some fancy sort of doodad that makes it possible.

"Ahhh, Wayland! My best customer!" The Merchant rubs his hands together as you walk up. "Got several bits of copper with your name on em. Even got a good chunk of steel if you want to really let loose." Here he pauses and lowers his voice. "I know you've been itching ta do bigger things kid, so if you want I think I got a few special deals for you later."

"Maybe." You know this Goblin would steal the clothes off your back if he could, but he's at least honest in his deals. "Gotta fill up my copper stores at least."

A few bars of copper are immediate pulled out. You check them as normal and nod.

"All right, got any good deals?" You ask conversationally. "I been itching to do bigger things."

"Been hearing some strange rumblings down south." The Goblin states conversationally. "If you got a few cheap hammers, I would give you a fair price since they are in demand. Don't need fancy stuff. Don't really trade in weapons that much though. Pretty jewelry if you can do it. Though I'd need a few show pieces as an example before I agree to anything."

You nod.

[]

You have 1 fate point now! As an example of what you can do with it, you can have the Goblin have somethings special. Maybe a discount (Goblin though, so expect a reason for it) Or perhaps a better rumor? :)

You currently have a backlog of 5 jobs that will take 10 segments, and give you 2.5 G. You currently have no living expenses.

So, what are we going to do for our friend? We could go full masterwork here, with steel and enchantments. Would take a long while, but is likely to increase our skill too. Maybe we could even get a recruitment pitch if Leon's sword manages to catch somebody's attention in the city?

Making jewelry for the goblin seems like the best bet. Only 2 segments, and copper and gold, the likely materials to make jewelry, don't add any additional ones. Plus, we benefit from our already high blacksmithing score. Could even invest the money gained into Leon's sword, and make it intro a truly masterpiece weapon, made of expensive mithril or even thorium. The very first step of our legend.

Still have 10 segments worth of Backlog to finish
Ahhh.

Nope. Sorries. Fatigue is there for a reason. :)
It was worth a short.

At any rate would something like equipment to enhance making a particular object be useful. Like having a simple set of Jewelry tools.

Or an Idiots guide to mechanics
strength+: +3 - 4.5 - Enchanting
Agility+: +3 - 4.5 - Enchanting
Magic+: +3 - 4.5 - Enchanting
Stamina: +3 - 4.5 - Enchanting
Item Durability: +3 - 4.5 - Enchanting
Item Damage: +4 - 4.5 - Enchanting

Enchanting Perks
-25 Reduces Cost of all enchantments by .5
-50 Allows two enchanments to be done at 8 segments instead of 10

Even if it isn't additive to one another. Shouldn't the 4.5 be 4.0 (Though I'm hopeful that it's 3.5 (5-0.5-1.0))

Also how does the 50 bouns works since the 2 enchantments are usually +6 or +7 segments. Or was the 50 bonus a general segment reduction

Whoops, my bad. Minor mistake there in my notation. :) Fixed.
No prob :D

Also here's Plan Let's get this started
[X] Plan Let's get this started
-[X] Work this amount of segments in this order until a Story Interupt +3/*2/-3/+3/+2/+2
--[X] (+) Means the general work backlog, (*) Means Normal Quality Bronze Hammer (1 segment, 1 gold each), (-) means Normal Quality Iron Jewelery with Gold Enhancement (3 segments,4gold).
-[X] Fate Point: Goblin has a hereditary (who knows how he got it) skillbook of Enchantment that's so over his head he thinks it's Random Gibberish. He's willing to sell it to us along with some random books for something 'cheap'
-[X] Find out where people could afford buying better weapons and jewelry and the reasonableness of getting someone to sell on our behalf/ move to someplace new

Wouldn't it be better to make the jewelry out of gold or bronze? I don't think iron jewelry will be a hit.
