Punching through the Masquerade (Modern Magical Cultivation Quest)

[ ] Plan: Experiments and Networking
-[ ] Work your regular shifts at Allmart
-[ ] How do I shoot fire?
-[ ] How do I see the future?
-[ ] The Secret Script
-[ ] ?

I wanna check out the occult bookshop first. An actual secret society feels a little risky right now, magic nerds are probably a better starting point. Not sure what I want for the 5th action tho. I'm leaning towards asking around for extra shifts so we can save up for clay experiments, but I also kinda wanna check out the herb shop.

I would say asking for extra shifts. Right now, we don't have enough knowledge (in my view anyway) to know what would be useful items.

-[X] Ask around for extra shifts
-[X] How do I shoot fire?
-[X] How do I see the future?
-[X] The Secret Script

[X] Getting that promotion.
-[X] Work your regular shifts at Allmart
-[X] Ask to be put on the overtime desired list
-[X] Suck up to the Manager
-[X] How do I shoot fire?
-[X] How do I see the future?

Just from the little we've seen, cultivation and finding knowledge to allow us to advance will get expensive. Getting promoted would help with that and we should try to do so.

Were healthy, so we can afford a few weeks of heavy work and do we really care about our coworkers that much?

[X] Plan: Advancing Forward
-[X] Work your regular shifts at Allmart:
-[X] Ask around for extra shifts:
-[X] How do I shoot fire?:
-[X] How important is the medium?:
--[X] Butcher's paper
-[X] The Secret Script:

I think we're a bit premature for Divination, especially when we don't know how much stuff costs either. The Secret Society is obvious Bait, so we'll pass on that for now, but exploring the Gardens and the Secret Script both look like good plays, even if we don't get anything out of them, we'll at least know what's on the table there.

Definitely start looking at getting a bit more of a war chest going on, we're a bit premature to get an "Apprentice" though when we're still Apprentice level ourselves. While having a basic trick for self-defense seems wise at this juncture. We'll also have a fair amount of Embers to use it with, without having to risk spending any poking around with Pyromancy. (Also, actively burning things might be dangerous at our current juncture, unless we have candles maybe?)

But yes, we want to limit our use of magic for now, and can't poke at other Mediums until our Yellow Bile's recovered fully, since we don't want to end up in the proverbial hole there.

And yeah, I'm not super interested in climbing the corporate ladder, as that's a time and soul sink to the extreme. Better to find something better in the first place.

That's easy to say but hard to do. I don't see a potential job that we can get that would pay better then what we'll get if were promoted.

Like if you have any idea about a different job I'm all for it and if so we should probably invest an action to search for it.

But I don't see us getting something better then minimum wage.

As to it being an action sink, getting more shifts so you could put more action into work is also a time sink.

I'm not saying lets climb the ladder all the way to the top but a few steps higher on the ladder then bottom.

We've barely dipped our toes into the Supernatural here, I sincerely doubt there are no opportunities to be had there.

But actively becoming a corporate drone seems entirely against the idea of Rebellion that our paradigm seems to operate on. Playing along for a shot time at little investment is probably fine, actively sucking up to arseholes and swallowing our pride? Not so much.

Shit, knew i forgot something. One second

Oh, huh, that changes things up a bit, and this is a pretty decent change.

EDIT: Medium experimentation's been added, since we actually can kindle more than once a turn without crippling ourselves. The revision is basically that we get a 'Buffer' equal to our Yellow Bile every turn that we can Kindle with, before it starts damaging it. Presumably, the prior system was unsustainable, because only being able to Kindle once per turn without taking overwhelming (As opposed to merely inconvenient) penalties meant that our progress was going to crawl even in the early stages, which isn't fun for anyone.

That being said, I've explicitly ordered that we do our Medium research after we figure out a basic self-defense spell.

Since this is the modern world, do prizes for demonstrating the paranormal exist? Those, or more likely a similar fictional counterpart, could help with our financial situation. (Assuming we can afford a plane ticket to where the challenge is--that alone could make it take a while.)

I'd say "Yes, but there's an active Masquerade going on here, so chances are that this is literally bait to catch out anyone who stumbles upon Secrets and isn't part of The Conspiracy"

We probably win the prize, and then find ourselves mysteriously dead from a burglar after our money shortly afterwards.

ugghhh damn vampires, I'm back from donating plasma and available to answer questions for a bit. Vote closes in a few hours

They do, but much like in our world, they run the gamut from ego trips to honey traps. And even if they were genuinely honest, the target it paints on your back makes the money worthless.

Just out of curiosity, how do we actually level our attributes up? There's obviously ways to improve them in cultivation, but we're a ways out from figuring out how that goes.

Going forward after you've done exploration, everytime you roll all sixes with the dice of a particular stat, you gain a point towards leveling up a stat. There'll be a few options that'll improve the odds of achieving this, but to hit the next stat level, you'll need to roll that stat number +1 6's. For example, to improve your Yellow Bile from 2 to 3, you'll need to roll 4 sets of 2 sixes. Black bile, being handicapped, will require 6 rolls of 6 to go from 1 to 2

Rolling all sixes on 2 dice is a 1/36 chance, so to do it 4 times takes about 144 rolls. At 1 turn every 3 days, and assuming one roll per turn, that means about 432 days which means that we improve Yellow Bile by a point around the end of July 2024. I'm not going to calculate raising a stat to 4, but let's say we're not going to see it.

So we'll only in practice be able to improve stats 1) if "options that improve the odds" are really good, or 2) we get some timeskips and can still cultivate and make rolls during the timeskips.
