Don't think the sister thing should be brought up quite yet.

I vote when I feel qualified to decide, and disagree with the dominant vote, or if it's close.

I'm sorry you feel that people don't vote enough, but I also strongly feel that the right mechanism to show appreciation is likes, not votes. Plus, likes don't require that I navigate separate keyboard screens to fish for angle brackets, or try to wrangle Android's, let's say challenging, implementation of copy-paste.

You avert your gaze from Kishi and stick your fork into some mashed potatoes at the edge of your plate, restlessly playing with the utensil for a moment. You can understand why Kishi would think that, and you still need to explain the situation with Mariko to her and the others. It's not about Mariko this time, though, no matter how convenient an excuse it would be.

Your stomach turns in on itself. Right now you'd like to be anywhere else, doing anything else. Can you really tell about that to Kishi? Can you tell about it here of all possible places? Can you

But can say nothing of this, and lie to Kishi?

That makes your decision. You lift your eyes again and look at Kishi. 'N-no, it's not about Mariko,' you explain. 'This is… about something else entirely.'

You bite your lips. It's time to go. 'I-I… I have a sister, you see. But we haven't talked for so long. I was…' you trail off, unable to keep going with the wavering strength to talk about this. You just can't. 'Sorry, I-I'd rather not talk about this… I-I just can't- not now.'

Kishi is stunned by the dropped bombshell, however, and the only thing she can say after a minute of silence is a simple, 'I-I'm sorry…'

She really shouldn't be, but you nonetheless offer her a small nod in appreciation. No doubt your uncle and Mariko also picked up the small gesture as well, but what exactly they make of it is not something you can tell. This is not the right time to dwell on matters like that, anyways. Even if uncle will probably take a moment to have a serious talk with you later.

But for now, you have dinner. So you pick up your fork from the mashed potatoes, and slowly start eating again, pushing these matters to the back of your head in favor of sating your hunger.

Sadly, there's still enough room there for another problem you need to address. You glance sideways to where Mariko's sitting. You take a deep breath to calm your nerves, and then reach out to her through telepathy.

'Uh, by the way, Mariko?' you ask as softly as you can to not startle her.

'...Yes?' She seems wary again all of sudden. She probably suspects that this is going to be another complicated situation you need to clear with her.

'W-well,' you begin with a slow and hesitant drawl. 'I was mostly thinking about how from now on we'll be going to school together?'

'And what of it?'

'I mean, Kishi might kind of, sort of, maybe… Uh, get weird ideas if we don't tell her anything about you staying here,'
you explain. 'But, um… I mean, I don't know how much you'd be willing to tell her?'

'Do you often talk about topics like this during dinner?'
Mariko sighs mentally.

'I don't- uh, sorry!' you hastily add. 'But, you know, maybe think about that before the time comes?'

'I'll try?'
she allows, even if a bit reluctantly.

And with that out of the way, you focus back to the going-ons of the dinner table, intent on actually catching what everyone's talking about. Sadly, you can't make head or tails of anything, partially because the talking seems to have died down following your little stint in awkward silence.

Good thing you know what to do! When in doubt? Pivot.

"You know, I kind of need to ask something," you begin, your thoughts returning to a conversation you had earlier today. "Do you guys think that Ariane's father is a bit… Um, overly protective of her?"

You pause for a moment, before adding a quick explanation. "I mean, I can't say for sure, but I don't think I'd like to be as sheltered as she is. Actually… Also thinking about it, wouldn't it be possibly dangerous to restrict a Magical Girl's movement like that?" You turn to look at your uncle. "Do you think I should bring this up with him when I get the chance?" Or maybe he could-

"To be honest, I'd say that's the kind of conversation that's better handled between adults," your uncle notes. "Big Boss Verrier is usually pretty reasonable, but he's still a parent." He leans back on his chair. "However, I'd like to ask what makes you think that? I've talked with him about Magical Girls quite extensively, and he seems receptive to the necessity of hunting, even if it's mostly begrudgingly?"

What do you do?

[] Answer uncle.

[] Never mind, pivot the conversation elsewhere.

[] Write-in.

Uh, is it because Ariane was not able to hunt witches with us today?

Uh, is it because Ariane was not able to hunt witches with us today?

Rather generally, actually.
She is under a pretty strict curfew and her father does not allow her to go out without her aides... so... that might be troublesome.

But I apparently managed to mess up basically every part of that vote when creating it, so I will stay out of this one.

Could spin it as an overreaction to Ariane's lack of appearance that Tamiko view as cause for concern since Ariane is quite outgoing in her attempts to experience the outside world.
