Chapter 2 - Take a break 26
[X] "I'm going to hug you when I get there, alright?"
[X] Close the call.
[x] Read until bedtime (Harry Potter).

"It's okay, Ami, I understand how this must feel," you answer back to the phone, unsure if what you say is really true, "But I promise it will get better. I'll just, uh… Well, I'm going to hug you when I get there, alright? I swear, they really need to invent some kind of long-distance hugs…"

The world is truly unjust, denying you the hugs because of such a trivial thing as physical distance. One of these days, you would find a way to solve this grievous error.

"...Thank you," Ami quietly whispers back to you, sounding like this was the only thing she could think of, "It's just… I really don't even know."

"Yeah… I'll see you tomorrow, okay? So don't let it bother you too much, just wait!"
you exclaim, trying to sound as bright as you can.

"Right… Well, I suppose we'll see then... Good night, Tamiko!"

"Night!"
you bid to the phone and close the call. You get the distinct impression that you probably could have handled that a lot better, given the way Ami appeared to be distraught and nigh fearful of what is going on. Your friends, old or new, shouldn't be worried about you!

But hindsight is twenty-twenty, and you can't really go back and redo your conversation. You'll just have to face whatever is coming tomorrow. Being able to talk and explain things face to face tends to make things like this a lot more easier and a great deal less intimidating.

But with the prospect of facing Ami still in the distant future of tomorrow, you are left with the question of what to do next. Evelyn is still busy trying to get the list of your homework, so that is not an option.

You look at your bag to the side and pause to think. You did finally get the rest of the Potter books to read through, and it would be a shame not to continue from where you left off… This is as good as it gets when it comes to time, and you start reaching out to the bag-

"Knock knock, kiddo! Hope I'm not interrupting something?" your uncle's voice calls out from the door to your room, startling you enough that you snap right back to spot on your bed you were sitting on. Your gaze immediately turns to the man standing at the door, and you suddenly remember that he wanted to talk to you about skipping school.

Joy… "Not really, uncle, just finished the phone call," you answer, bracing yourself for what was to come as your uncle sits down next to you and turns to look at you, "Is this about what I did today?"

The man lets out a sigh and nods. "Yeah, it's about you skipping school today," he says, "But don't take this the wrong way. I understand why you chose to do that, and with all the witches prevented from hurting others, in a way you also have my approval. Good job, Tamiko.

Huh? "But why talk about this then? If there's nothing wrong, why are you so serious about this, uncle?"

"That's because of the underlying reasons and implications I see here,"
the man answers you, giving you a long look.

"Underlying reasons?"

"...More specifically, how you chose to skip school, the most defining part of a young girl's life, in favor of going hunting,"
he explains, "That sends some worrying messages, and I hope to nip any problems in the bud by talking these things through with you… So, can you answer me this question? How important thing is being a Magical Girl in your life?"

"W-what?"
you stammer, disbelieving about the question. Without your wish, you would still…

"Or rather, do you define and see yourself as 'Tamiko the Magical Girl' first and foremost?" your uncle continues, heedless of your confusion, "You don't have to answer yet, but please, give it some thought. Okay? It's more important to know yourself than most people realize"

But that sounds so easy! You are just Tamiko, Tamiko the… the...

You pause for a moment, unsure what to think here. Your uncle has clearly noticed your hesitation

"I have met and talked… lived with girls who thought like that, you know. And down that path lies nothing pretty," he says, gently laying his hand on your shoulder, "Even if magic is amazing and something genuinely wondrous by itself, it's still a war-like life that comes with it. You should not let that become the defining part of your life, lest you end up alienating everything else that's important. Magic should be a part of your life, not your life by itself."

You start to frown as your uncle gives you another meaningful look, "Do you understand what I'm getting at Tamiko?"

What do you do?

[] Write-in your answer.

Uncle being more serious than usual here.

Ugh, I really wish people hadn't voted for "do you want a believable lie or the unbelievable truth." We could have gotten to the exact same place in a better way with the other vote.

That aside, I imagine this is going to be an important vote here. Possibly one that helps decide what our character's goals and personality going forwards is.

[X] How many Magical Girls have you lived with Uncle? Does Cathy know?
Tempting... but no.
[X]I understand what you mean Uncle, but I'm still figuring some things out myself. I'll keep your advice in mind though.
Be honest and straightforward: We have no clue. Tamiko's a teenager! A teen who says they have all their things figured out is either one very mature person or a liar. Tamiko is neither of these.

[X] If I hadn't become a Magical Girl, I'd probably still be alone. Because of my wish, I'm happier than I've been in what seems like forever. But the important thing isn't the magic, it's the friends I made because of it. They're what's important to me. As long as I have them, I think I'll be okay.

Might be a bit too articulate, but this seems like a better reassurance to Uncle. Tamiko isn't really obsessed with magic. It's just that her social life and support network are linked to the magic. We went witch hunting because killing witches and saving people is good, but also to help Kishi and Mariko get along better.

Sure it will~

In the meantime, I checked the thread and the current tally, and...

...I get the impression that not many really know what to do here :). @Impstar has it quite right that this can and will affect future developments in a meaningful way, so keep that in mind.

[X] Tell him you understand.
-[X] But you didn't specifically skip school just to hunt. You did it for Mariko and Kishi.
--[X] You like being a magical girl, and you like that you're saving lives by being one. It's a important part of your life. But it isn't the most important part.

Got out a quick vote, might add or take things out later.

You do know that Ube's was a vote for me, right? That's 4 out of 6 for my write-in.
EDIT: OK, 4 out of 7 now, but you get the idea.
Well, whaddya know... Overlooked that one, it seems :lol

Still regardless, I'm going to give you a good amount of time with this vote if you want to vote-tweak or something like that.

I like this one. I feel that []I understand what you mean Uncle, but I'm still figuring some things out myself. I'll keep your advice in mind though.
It's just putting it off. We're not really responding to the question as much as saying "eh, I'll figure it out later." I don't think that's what the Uncle has in mind for a response, and I think we can do better.
