Closing votes here.

Also, a note to all of you. I'll be going to another camp early in the morning, tomorrow. This one will last well into the next week, and I can't bring my laptop with me for the obvious reasons. Now, I shouldn't have that intense work ahead of me there, but phone being phone means that you are safe to assume that there won't be updates during this time.

No promises, but a fair warning.

Chapter 2 - Take a break 14
[x] You met Mariko while hunting witches, then brought her over to your house afterwards!
[x] Go inside for the promised treats!

"I ended up running into her while hunting for witches," you step up to answer Ariane's question. Mariko is clearly not too keen on talking about the circumstances of how you met, and you don't think forcing her to do that would be very kind. "After the witch was deal with, I, uh... brought her over to my home. We've been hanging out after that."

It's a very simplified version of the events leading to this point, and you have to suppress the urge to wince. You're pretty much lying to Ariane here by leaving things out. Sure, it is done to save Mariko from having to admit to the drama behind her, but it still makes you feel bad about yourself.

Ariane inclines her head in response and gives you an inquisitive look. Her eyes widen ever so slightly at something and she nods slightly, before turning to look back at Mariko with a slight smile on her face. Did she realize something or-?

"Ooh, you must have had quite the adventures then!" Ariane exclaims and motions for all of you to follow, "But now… It's cocoa-time~!"

The girl practically dances her way up the walkway to the house with the rest of you in tow. Though it is rather subtle and wordless, you don't miss the grateful look Mariko sends you on the way…

The kitchen of Ariane's manor is still as lovely as before, especially with proper lighting. Though the process is still clearly underway in some places, Mr Verrier has clearly gotten things done here quite fast. Aside from the distinct shortage of windows, you couldn't guess how dark the place used to be it.

It is a definite contender for the best ghost house in Mitakihara Metropolitan Area. You know you would vote for it if you actually could.

But as it stands, you find yourself sitting with your friends around the large wooden table. Laid before all of you are mugs filled with steaming hot chocolate. A pile of recently baked chocolate-bit cookies is laid on a plate. The amount keeps dwindling quite quickly, though, with several pairs of arms nibbing the cookies out one by one.

At the same time, there's a constant small talk going on between you. It's mostly about school and how good the cookies are at first, but inevitably the topic shifts elsewhere…

"Hmm, say..." Ariane begins and turns to look at you after a gulp from the steaming mug. Out of all of you, she is easily in the brightest mood, chugging away the steaming hot chocolate like it was lukewarm and swinging a bit on her seat. You suspect it is because she is swinging her feet under the table as she enjoys the chatter and company of her friends.

However, your mind pulls to a screeching halt when you catch what she wanted to ask. "Why did you pick Kishi up and run away when we started the snowball fight?"

"I didn't kidnap anyone!"
you yell in indignation before you've even thought what to say. You also regret it almost immediately as you notice the looks you get, "Um I-I mean…"

"Huh… That's pretty s-p-e-c-i-f-i-c!"
Ariane practically sings with a smirk on her face, spelling your inevitable doom.

"T-that's not what-" you try to protest.

"Well, it's also not true," Evelyn pipes in gleefully, "Tamiko here did threaten to kidnap me before we came here… And from what I heard, Mariko here was also an actual victim of such horrendous crime! Isn't that right?"

You shake your head wildly. That was unjustified! But surely Mariko must be on your side on this-

"W-well, yes… That's technically true, but, um…"

Mariko, no!

"But why would Tamiko even do that?" Ariane asks curiously.

"Well, if we are to believe her uncle…" Evelyn, don't do it! "Tamiko is trying to build up a harem like some sort of anime protagonist. She is just bringing in her waifus."

A weak wheeze escapes your lips as you slink down the back of your seat, "N-noooo…" It's not like that! Those are all vicious lies!

You notice out of the corner of your eyes as next to you Kishi falls limp against her seat and slinks down. Her face is red as a tomato and only weak wheezes seem to escape her lips. Your only ally in the quest for truth will be of no help here...

"Uh, I thought it was just Tamiko and Ha-... Kishi together!?" Mariko blurts out suddenly, starting to sound seriously concerned about this whole thing. Although, there is a beginning of a faint, amused smile on her face.

What do you do?

The last part of your vote kind of got derailed by kidnappings.

But somehow, no one's complaining...typical harem anime. We're still missing some of the more exotic personalities though, so we definitely have more work to do! :V

You guys are boring. Then again, I'm no better. Can't think of anythig vaguely creative or even amusing.

Eh, screw it. If we're going down, then someone should go down with us. Evelyn, buddy, I'm sorry. But it looks like you're the most convenient target.:V

[X] Give Mariko the saddest most betrayed look you can muster.
-[X] Why?
[X] Tell Evelyn that you're surprised she's so quick to tease. Especially considering a certain incident on a certain morning not too long ago. She didn't seem to think it was so funny back then. But hey, if she really wants to talk about your evil uncle's slander then...

Actually wonder if we can turn the question back on Ariane by saying 'you like how warm I am'
Guess revenge have to wait another time.

It takes every bit of your remaining willpower to avoid fainting from the sheer shock and horror. It is a constant battle to stay conscious and prevent yourself from being overcome by the embarrassment. Your face is burning like a bonfire at this point, and you'd like nothing more than to sink beneath the ground and disappear.

You were already aware that she had some misconceptions about your purely friendly relationship with Kishi, but it seems that deflecting the question didn't help matters. And now it has come back to haunt you...

Fortunately, it looks like both Ariane and Evelyn too have been stunned into silence by the proclamation. The former especially looks like she almost spit out an entire mouthful of hot chocolate. The silence lasts only a moment, but it is sufficient for you to gather yourself enough to be able to think a bit more coherently. Unfortunately, it isn't enough for you to retake the initiative.

"Wait, wait, wait… Oh God, this is pure gold!" Evelyn exclaims brightly and throws a constantly widening, mischievous grin at all of you.

"Um, excuse me?" Mariko manages to stammer in confusion and worry, "What do you mean?"

"Oh, don't you worry about it~! That's just… Oh God!"

You can't let this go on anymore… You turn to face Mariko, giving her the most pointedly hurt and betrayed stare you are able to muster underneath the hot blush adorning your face. You don't even need to fake it here…

"M-Mariko, wh-whyyy?" you whisper, dragging out the words with a strained voice causing to girl to wince and throw her suddenly regretful gaze to her knees.

"S-sorry…" she says apologetically. At the same time, Ariane turns to look at her.
She is frowning lightly.
You let that be for the moment as you turn to face Evelyn, the main villain here. You gulp and gather your determination in face of this adversary…

"Y-you… You!" you try to accuse the girl, who simply raises an eyebrow in response.

"Me?" she answers you flippantly. The nerve of her!

"You would…" you begin, but halt before starting. You need to calm down a bit and take a deep breath. You can't let Evelyn get the better of you here and now. You need a better tactic for this, you need something to bring the fight back to her-

"I-I'm surprised you're so quick to tease," you stammer out with growing mischievousness in your expression, "E-especially considering… Well, a certain incident on a certain morning not too long ago? You certainly didn't seem to think it was so funny back then… But hey? I-if you really want to talk about my evil uncle's slander, then…"

You leave the last part of your sentence hanging, leaving Evelyn to ponder on the implied threat. It seems to work wonders, as the girl falters and turns uncertain all of sudden. You can see the embarrassment creep on her face as she starts to remember just what you were talking about.

"That... That doesn't count!" she tries to protest to absolutely no effect as you offer no visible reaction to her words.

"...Uh, everyone?" Ariane awkwardly tries to say, but her voice is quickly drowned out by Evelyn.

"Really, nothing came out of that, and, err… I mean, nothing really happened!"

Selective memory? Sure, your uncle treated that incident with respect, but it was hugely embarrassing nonetheless. Maybe you should-

"Everyone!" Ariane interrupts you again, sounding a bit more confident about speaking up. She is looking around the table at all of you. She is smiling a bit, though it feels a bit forced, "What do you think… Maybe we take the snacks with us and go do something! Miss Celia brought some board games here that we could... try out?"

Well…

What do you do?

YEEEESSSS! VEGEANCE!!!!

Although, I get the feeling this will end up biting us later. Oh, well.:V

That went decently well. And it looks like Ariane got uncomfortable by the whole waifu talk.
