Chapter 2 - Take a break 12
[X] Escape!

Well, it seems rather likely that the situation is about to escalate and slide down the slippery slope into chaos... But with both Ariane and Evelyn gearing up for a fight right now, there is no time to think. You need to act fast! You need to get out of the way while you still can!

The thought has barely even been processed by your mind when you are already rushing to get out of the way. Pretty much out of a reflex, you sweep Kishi off her feet and grab her along for the ride. You don't have time to give her any kind of warning, and you can hear her scream in surprise when she falls on your arms.

"W-we need to get away!" you yell to the girl and jump off the walkway to head for the cover granted by the trees scattered around the huge yard. Due to the recent weather the lawn of the manor is covered with a thick layer of snow that makes running difficult. Yet you choose to go on in spite of it.

After all, you would risk total humiliation in a snowball fight! That's what you get for not having practiced that for a long while... And with the way Kishi is staying utterly silent and clinging to your neck, she must agree with you wholeheartedly.

You can hear loud screaming coming from behind you, but you don't dare to turn around just yet. There is a good, thick tree behind which you can-...

"T-Tamiko?" Kishi whimpers on your arms, loud enough for you to hear and stop your running for the moment.

You turn to look at her in confusion. "Y-yeah, what is-?" you manage to ask out before it clicks to you. Kishi's is blushing heavily from the embarrassment and staring at you with her wide, brown eyes. Her mouth is hanging slightly open, and you can notice the small wisps from her quiet breathing. It also occurs to you that you are really holding her, with your arms below her knees and back in a perfect bridal carry.

Your breathing stops and your face flares up at the realization. After joking about it to Evelyn, you end up kidnapping Kishi… and with your uncle's constant remarks about this sort of thing…

"K-Kishi, I…" you stutter out unable to find the words.

"...T-Tamiko, i-it's-" she answers you back meekly, her blush brightening ever so slightly.

But that is as far as she gets before something cold slams against the back of your head, causing you to stumble forward slightly. You turn around this time, and see Ariane standing at the end of the road, looking at you with a visible pout.

"Hey, that's unfair, no leaving the game!" she gleefully shouts at you and throws another snowball, this one slamming against Kishi's now exposed forehead. She yelps at the sudden hit and tightens her hold around your neck in response.

Evelyn is crouching down the walkway, near a pile of snow. Her body is covered in patches of snow and she seems to be creating snowballs like a maniac. Mariko is standing to her side, awkwardly handling an already finished ball. She seems to be unsure what to really do or how to react to all this.

Then two snowballs hit you again in close succession, one of them slamming against your face and another against your shoulder. Ariane is not letting you away so easily.

What do you do?

Hmm, does the WAFF necessarily have to come from embarrassing shipping situations?
Knew that was going to happen, still incredibly let down.

Sorry ... But if there's something that's specifically bothering you, please say it. It makes it easier to do better in the future.

I don't think it has anything to do with you Ziz. You're a perfectly good writer. Whiskers simply didn't like the winning vote.

I'll vote this for now, but is there any way you guys can think of to make Mariko feel like she fits in more?

Damn wish I had checked earlier and change that vote.

There is no helping it anymore, you will have to fight or fall. Escaping was never truly an option it seems. As such, you reluctantly let go of Kishi and lay her back on the ground feet first. Her shaking legs seem to almost give in under her weight when she touches the ground, but she manages to steel herself in time and weakly hobbles towards a tree for cover.

With Kishi safe for now, you turn your attention back to the grinning Ariane and the Evelyn-reluctant!Mariko alliance. There are only targets in your sight… But first comes your righteous vengeance!

"Y-you're going down now, Ariane!" you shout and dive into the snow, gathering enough of the stuff to quickly start creating snowballs of your own for the incoming attack.

You don't come under fire this time, as Evelyn chooses to launch her surprise attack while Ariane is distracted by you. The poor girl yelps as she comes under a non-stop barrage from her, covering the neat jacket almost entirely in snow without her being able to mount much resistance.

However, with Mariko not working very hard on new ammo, Evelyn runs out quickly, easing the pressure on Ariane for a brief moment. It doesn't last long, though, as Kishi manages to gather herself enough to start lobbing the snowballs she creates on the way while walking towards her. You can see a slight grin on her her still red face as she continues her much more accurate fire while slowly advancing.

You gather up the few ones you've made already, and join the advance against Ariane. You can't help the face-splitting grin appearing on your face as you overwhelm whatever desperate defense Ariane attempts to put up.

It doesn't take very long for you to make it to her, with a very triumphant-looking Evelyn gloating over her. "You've been defeated! Now... I swear the judgment shall be brief and painless if you surrender without a struggle."

"Aww, but it was four against one… That's just unfair!"
Ariane groans from the ground. Though she is complaining about it, she still has an exhilarated smile on her face. Honestly, she probably shouldn't have tried to attack you if she wanted even sides. But on the other hand…

"Ha! All is fair in love and especially war! The alliance has-" Evelyn exclaims, only to get silenced by you lobbing a snowball straight at her face.

"I never really was on your side!" you announce with barely hidden glee.

"O-hoo! If you want to play it that way, then who am I to disagree?" Evelyn drawls out as she wipes out the snow scattered across her face. It is on now…

It doesn't take long for Ariane to jump back in, and you soon lose your sense of time and place in the chaos that ensues. Everyone is shouting and screaming as snowballs are thrown around indiscriminately with no clear sides or even true awareness of the situation.

You are not sure what has happened after the dust settles, but by the end of it most of you are panting heavily, especially Evelyn. Mariko is the only exception, having mostly stayed in the sidelines and avoided anything coming her way. She has no remains of snow on her borrowed jacket either.

She is probably the winner by proxy....

"Ehe he he!" Ariane giggles merrily from the ground between the tired wheezes, "I've wanted to… do something like this for so long…"

She certainly seems happy about it, though.

"But hey, is this... the Mariko I've been hearing about?" Ariane continues as she rises to sit. She gives a wave to to Mariko and grins, "Hello! I am Ariane… Ariane le Verrier!"

Mariko awkwardly tries waving back, but her smile is rather weak and a bit forced. "Uh, hi? I-I'm Fuyousawa Mariko…" she tries, "Pleased to meet you."

"Likewise!"
Ariane announces and starts climbing up to stand, "I've been waiting forward to seeing you in person! But before we go drink the cocoa and eat the cookies... How did you all meet?"

Mariko falters, not too enthusiastic about having to explain the drama...

What do you do?

[] Go inside for the promised treats!
-[] Have a conversation while you eat.
