Ugh. This is hard. Evelyn is stuck under a mountain of uncertainty both ways. She's also feeling more and more like a burden and... that's not good to say the least.

Oh, crap. So many points to cover and so many ways this can go wrong!:o

I'm not sure where to begin in even addressing this. We should probably start churning out ideas, though.

[] "You say that you feel like it doesn't matter. Well, it does matter. It matters because you matter."
-[] You still remember that day you and her met. When she had agreed to eat lunch with you and Kishi, you had felt so happy.
--[] What she said about Kishi and Ariane also apply to her. You may have only known her for a short time, but it feels you and her have been friends for so much longer. She may not be a magical girl, but you consider her as much as part of the group as the others are.
[] You may be stronger that average humans, but often it feels like you're so very weak. Before you had met her and Kishi, you were a mess. You had been lost.
-[] She isn't a burden, because she gives you strength. With her and the others there, it all feels worth it. All the pain, the grief, and the fear is worth it because she's there. You have been the happiest that you had ever been for years, because they are with you. It feels like you can handle absolutely anything. As for her wish...

This is really hard.:V I think some of this needs to be edited and cut out, but right now I'm out of steam.

First I think we should stop with the notion that there's an easy solution to this. There isn't. This isn't going to get fixed in a single vote. We maybe able to address some of it but Tamiko is really out of her depth here. She can't fix all of Evelyn's problems. But she can be there for her.

[X] It's not a horrible thought Evelyn, because it's not entirely untrue.
-[X] The truth is I was being selfish. Being a magical girl is dangerous, and the thought of losing one of my friends made me so afraid that I didn't consider how it might make you feel. I'm sorry.
[X] I don't know whether it would be safer for you to make a wish or not, and I don't know what wish you should make.
-[X] The one thing I do know is that you are my friend, and you will never be a burden to me.

In that case, a conversation about being a magical girl and wish can probably wait. Just need to focus on comforting her about the burden part, most likely.

Borrowed some of Whiskers lines.

-[x] No Evelyn. That's not stupid at all.

This doesn't address a major part of the problem, which is that she worries that we don't want her to become a magical girl, and she feels bad about distrusting us like that. We need to be honest and tell her that part of the reason we said what we did was that we were afraid of losing her.

Telling someone who feels like they're useless that they aren't is like ramming a brick wall. It doesn't fit with their worldview, so it just bounces off. If we want to help her self opinion we need to A) Start valuing her choices and opinions more, and B) Give her an actual reason she's useful. Otherwise she's just going to disregard it.

Uh... That wasn't the reason we said that. Tamiko isn't against Evelyn contracting. She just wants Evelyn not to wish just because she feels she needs to and that she doesn't regret the wish she makes.

But right now this is a secondary concern. Important, but we need to address the other issue first.

A) doesn't conflict with my vote and B) We value Evelyn for her being her. But I could stand to emphasize that more.

Added a line.

Do you have the impression that we aren't valuing her choices and opinions? Aside from MG matters (where we shouldn't value her opinion as much, even though she might not like it) and keeping Evelyn safe (again, she might not like it, but her safety is worth more than some hurt feelings), we've been as much a friend to her as she's been to us. Which is to say, close friends.

Your first reaction is to squee in delight at the idea of having another Magical Girl friend. You suppress down the urge, however, as that would be extremely irresponsible of you. Witches are very dangerous after all, you can speak from experience, and pressuring her about the wish would be just rude of you.

It was explicitly part of our thought process, both from an IC and OOC perspective.

And besides, the main reason I dislike your vote is all it does is say, "no you're wrong" to Evelyn. Valuing someone for "being them" is vague as hell and pretty meaningless to someone with self esteem issues.

The problem is that saying she's important for being our friend isn't a very strong argument IC. We know OOC that having a large support network is important for meguca, but Tamiko hasn't even made the negative thoughts = grief connection yet. From Evelyn's perspective, we have other friends who we can rely on socially, and are also capable of protecting us in a fight. So she sees herself as the least valuable of our friends.

If you still want to stick with your vote, here are a few suggestions/observations to make it better.

1: Evelyn probably feels like she is being replaced by Arianne, as Arianne is a fellow foreigner, the new arrival to the group, and is a MG on top of that.
2: Try and find some task for her that would make her feel more important for the group. Helping us research stuff to try and science, or have her keep an eye out in the papers for things that suggest witch activity?
3: I do think the subject of Evelyn becoming a magical girl should be brought up sooner rather than later, as it's a major reason for her feelings of inadequacy. Leaving it alone increases the chances she'll make a poorly thought out wish for emotional reasons.
4. Based on the invisitext, Evelyn probably has some abandonment issues. Some assurance we will be her friend as long as she wants would probably be helpful.
5. Instead of just stressing she's important for being our friend, maybe focus on the traits that make her special among our friends? Admiring her confidence and the way she pushes herself, for example?
6. She seems to be putting both us and Magical girls in general on a pedestal, saying that there is some sort of bond between MG's that she feels left out of. Probably should address that misconception, and make it clear that we aren't better or different from her.

Above all, this is primarily a problem of Evelyn feeling like she can't compare to us or Kishi or Arianne, and not understanding her role in the group. Defining where she stands out and is uniquely important should be the main thrust of our argument.

These are some pretty good ideas. The rest might end up bloating the vote, though.

Witches being dangerous doesn't equate to (allegedly) slanting our opinion on wishes over fear of losing her. The reasoning is still off and not the reason we answered her the way we did.

1) I'm not convinced is an issue. Some measure of envy might be inevitable but outright replacement? I don't buy it.
4) I'm fairly sure we were already doing this in some capacity.
5) Is a good idea. I just need to figure out how to word it in the vote.
6) Is a hard sell. Even if we deny it, Evelyn could just assume that we're just not noticing what she's seeing.

Also it's well past 4am here. I shouldn't have stayed up this late. Bed. Sleep. Night.

You move your loose limbs back around Evelyn and hug her fully again. You are not entirely sure what to say or do about her words to be honest. There are just so many things wrong with everything your friend says, and trying to pick a point where to begin going through them feels almost impossible.

Yet, you cannot let it just lie and you try to find the words and the will to say something, anything. "N-no Evelyn, that's not stupid at all," you hesitantly begin and cringe inwardly. Truth to be told, you don't know what to think about this. It is not easy to imagine yourself in her shoes…

But it is possible.
Once more something reaches out of your Gem, this time with full capacity...
"I-I still remember the day we met… I-it made the class grow very interested, and I was almost afraid to talk with you. B-but when you agreed to eat lunch with me and Kishi, I felt so happy!" you tell her. You can picture yourself watching people, thinking how they live in a world you could never hope to become part of.

"A-and as the events went on, how we both forgot to pack lunch. And especially how you and Kishi had quite a… spirited debate over just how good, uh… Twilight I think? W-well, about how good it is. I-I could tell that moment that we were going to be great friends." It is something you have experienced first-hand, for too many times to count. It is a feeling you never want to experience again either, or even wish upon another person.

Evelyn keeps quietly crying in your arms, only muffled sobs escaping her lips. You smile weakly and caress her hair gently with your other hand. Frankly, it feels almost strange to have her there and in such a vulnerable emotional state. You certainly were not expecting to have her open up like that.

"Y-you know I admire you, right? Your confidence, your tenacity and your drive to succeed," you admit to her after a small pause. Feeling inadequate when compared to your friends is also familiar, even if not as overtly. Kishi is so much more experienced and knowledgeable than you. Ariane seems to never run out of energy and even after a disaster seems to quickly bounce back on her feet. But for Evelyn... "E-even still, you are also a person who can take the time to call up her friends when they are sick and cheer them up when they're feeling down."

She should realize just how much she means to you. And perhaps now you can return the favor of being there to her. Evelyn certainly seems to stiffen in your grasp upon hearing that. She must have been completely taken aback by what you said.

"We may have known each other only for a short time… B-but it feels like we have been friends for so much longer," you exclaim and pause for a moment before continuing, "You may not be a Magical Girl, Evelyn... but you are just as much part of the group as the others are."

You can see Evelyn open her mouth to say something, but then close it nigh immediately as she realizes he lacks the words. Good thing too, "E-Evelyn, you are irreplaceable. You will always matter. You are never a burden. Not to me. Never doubt that!"

Silence falls back to your dark room. The only sounds come from your nervous breathing and Evelyn's steadily decreasing sobs. During all that time, you refuse to ease the your iron-gripped hug on her, or stop the slow and repeated movement of your hand in your friend's hair.

Evelyn doesn't try to talk back anymore, much to your relief. You are not really sure she fully believed everything you said but at least she seems to be thinking about it as her crying becomes almost non-existent. Yet, "A-are you feeling better now?" you ask her with a tender tone.

You can hear a sniff emanate from the girl as she tries to answer your question. Her voice is cracked and strained, it feels like every word had to be painfully forced out, "M-maybe a bit… But Tamiko… Thank you for being here... for being a friend with someone like me…"

You nod carefully, not wanting to accidentally clash your head with hers as she still leans her forehead on yours. "I-it's no problem. T-that's what friends are for, right?" you tell her with a smile and close your eyes. You are starting to feel a bit tired, what with it still being night.

Evelyn for her part stays quiet for a few moments, before letting out a short and strange-sounding burst of a strained giggle combined with a light sniff. "Uh, E-Evelyn, what is it?

"S-sorry… J-just had weird thought…" she mumbles out, and takes a couple of difficult breaths before asking you, "S-say, Tamiko, do you think it counts as your first kiss if it is from a witch?"

What do you do?

[] Eww, nooooo.

[] T-that's lewd!

[] Who knows? Maybe?

[] Go to sleep...

[] Talk about something else.

[] Write-in.

===

Well, that should be it for the most part.
