Chapter 2 - Setting the stage 6
[X] Stay here and continue talking with Kishi.
-[X] Promise her, that's what friends are for!

While you are feeling bemused about the question, it is nonetheless one you can easily answer. This is Kishi, your first and best friend, of course you'll always be there for her! She can always count on having you around to help her whenever things get rough. You keep caressing her hair and set your heads against each other's as you answer her.

"I-I promise, Kishi. I promise…" you assure her calmly, "That's what friends are for, right!"

At first there seems to be no reaction from the other girl, which makes you wonder if you said something wrong. But then you realize the barely noticeable increase of warmth suddenly in her face. Without warning, Kishi suddenly breaks from the hug with a muffled and panicked eep escaping her lips. Surprised by her sudden reaction to your answer, you are left unable to say anything meaningful yet.

Kishi is clearly avoiding looking at your general direction and her face is adorned by a scarlet blush. Strangely enough she seems to be smiling almost happily even when flustered so badly. You are a bit taken aback by her reaction, "Uh, K-Kishi? I-is something wrong? W-why are you… um..."

You have no words for that, even if you desperately try to find something to say. Kishi turns to completely face away from you and stammers out, "I-it's nothing! N-nothing.. J-just, uh, p-please don't tell about this to your u-uncle. I-if he were to h-hear about this."

Oh. Oooohhh… Yeah, you can sympathize with her worries completely. That monster would definitely get the wrong idea about all this. Who knows what kind of nightmares he would unleash on you if given even more wrong impressions about your relationships with your friends, Kishi first among them. The more you think about it, the more horrified you become at the prospect.

So you bite your lips and draw your fingers across your mouth. 'D-don't worry! My lips are sealed!' you tell her telepathically.

"T-thank you, I-I…" Kishi says, and takes several panicked looks around her before hastily continuing. Her face is still scarlet and her eyes have widened noticeably, "L-look at the time, w-we need to get g-going! S-so, uh… Y-yeah..."

The other girl breaks into a wobbly run towards the gymnasium, heedless of everything else in the otherwise mostly empty hallway. Only some of the other girls are there, finally getting out of the locker room. You suspect you are not really even late yet. It is difficult to tell since there is not even a clock present there, though…

Maybe she can precisely track time even when not transformed? It would make sense with the robotic body and all. Regardless, you are left somewhat befuddled as to what to think of it. She must have her reasons for doing that and you are somewhat curious. On the other hand, it doesn't feel right to pry about it. So you decide to leave it be for now...

What do you do?

[] Just join the class now, no need to stay here any longer

-[] Take it careful, think what to say.
-[] Barge in, apply verbal smackdown.
--[] Bonus physical smackdown!

[] Write-in.

Tamiko's speech and gestures are really looking like something romantic in nature right now, not merely between friends...

She seems to be trying awfully hard to deny it to herself. The Lady doth protest too much.

Got to make sure we level up our romance with the other two before saying yes. So denial all we want.

But hugging and telling your friends you'll be with them forever and comforting them when they're depressed are normal gestures between friends, right?

Honestly? Yes. It's certainly indicative of closeness, but it's hardly restricted to romantic relationships, and given how desperate for a relationship of any kind the MC has been, latching on and growing close unusually quickly isn't too surprising, especially considering that they're risking their lives alongside each other regularly.

Now we, as readers, can pretty clearly see that Kishi has developed a crush, but whether that is reciprocated has (presumably intentionally) been left ambiguous. There's a lot of teasing there, sure, but there's nothing I'd point to to 'prove' that Tamiko sees Kishi as anything other than a friend.

I suspect it's going to be left to voters to decide exactly how this plays out, and how Tamiko actually feels. As it should.

Wow, we really are that oblivious
Now to be fair Tamiko hasn't had any social activity for the past whatever years so it's to be expected that she's out of practice picking up on the reasons behind the way people act. Also those years of isolation have instilled a sense of negative self-worth so right now she's overjoyed that people even want to be her friend. The idea that anyone might be crushing on her is probably getting dismissed out of hand if the idea even enters her thought process at all.

Of course that's why we're here. Don't worry Tamiko, we'll get you a date.

This.

There really hasn't been any indication that Tamiko has any feelings of those nature towards Kishi. In fact, usually when someone is this oblivious, it means that they don't.

Could this change in the future? Of course. But it's clear for now, imo, that Tamiko only sees Kishi as her best friend.
