Breathe in...

Breathe out...

Breathe in...

You know you should be able to do this, you have survived much worse and surpassed far more intimidating threats in the span of a week. Yet, it feels like running would be the best option at the moment.

So you steady your breathing and take a slow step in to the room. There's no going back now. With a trembling fist you knock on the wall next to you and meekly call out to the girl, "A-Ami? A-are you free?"
Do you hear me?
Your voice comes out quiet, almost like a strained whisper, "I-It's me... T-Tamiko," you try to continue, trying to put more strength to your voice without much success.
Please, let me hear you talk...
Your hands feel cold and a lump seems to have risen to your throat. You swallow it and weakly finish, "W-we used to be friends once... right? S-so I just thought... that..." You can't bring yourself to finish and just stare at the girl, trying to see something, anything that would indicate that she has noticed you.
I need to know this... Don't be so silent...
Ami's eyes seem to flash, unfocused for a briefest of moments. Then her notebook gets gently put aside on a small table, and she turns to look where you stand. She seems surprised, as if not expecting your visit at all.

Your heart tries to leap out of your mouth as she suddenly talks back, "Hmm, Tamiko, Tamiko... Yes... I remember you!" the girl claps her hands together when she exclaims that, as if fully recognizing you now.

"How have you been, all this time... Well, please sit down first! I don't seem to have anything to offer, though..." she closes her eyes, smiling as she beckons you to come closer. Yet, you can hear the faint regretful undertone in her voice. Is Ami nervous about this?

Regardless, you shakily make your way to her bed, trying your hardest to not avert your gaze. She follows your every step, but most of her attention seems to be elsewhere. She is thinking something...

Neither one of you speaks when you sit on the hard hospital chair. Both of you seem to lack the words, and you take a closer look at how she has grown over the years.

She still has the long and wavy brown hair that approaches the shades of purple. Curtains match the windows, and her eyes are of the same color. It is difficult to tell in your positions, but she is a bit taller than you and seems maybe a year older than she actually is.

Still, you are the first to break under the oppressive silence between you two, and you blurt out the first things that comes to your mind, "Uh, s-so, what were you scribbling there?" Nice going there, Tamiko...

She seems half surprised half relieved about your words. She picks up her notebook from the table and shows it to you.

"I just draw what comes to my mind... Landscapes, dreams... and memories..." on the pages are three detailed pencil drawings of young girls holding hands with each other. They all seem very familiar, especially with the third one looking a lot like Ami. However, the row also has a fourth girl, one with no face and blurred outlines, as if she had no idea what to do with her.

"I occasionally draw those, even if I don't know why I bother anymore," she explains with a hint of melancholy in her voice, "Maybe I just want to remember something important."

She leans on the raised back of the bed, "But no matter how many I finish... they always seem wrong somehow. I can't place the feeling, but they all feel empty... as if something was missing."

What do you do?

Hope this conversation goes well. OOC, I really sympathize with her. But without knowing about the curse... the whole situation of what happened really doesn't look good. The conversation so far and the drawing make me hopeful, though.

It really is too bad that Kishi wasn't here. Or even Evelyn. Because Tamiko's sense of normal interaction is badly calibrated from the curse. And so is somewhat missing the obvious overhang of not normal over the entire situation.

Are all of them really like that? It seems so bizarre when you think about it... It shouldn't be that difficult to finish a drawing with only the outline for the last person left. Yet, Ami doesn't seem to realize it.

Did she hate you bad enough to will herself to forget about you that thoroughly? Are you bothering her even now?

But maybe if you told her about it? Could you...

You shake your head to dispel that train of thoughts and raise your gaze from the drawing, "I-I... think it is the last one in the row... S-she is missing, she isn't there yet."

Ami withdraws the hand holding the notebook and blinks as she looks at the picture, "Huh, I think you are right about that? I must have overthought about this to not have noticed it. I guess this one's not ready yet, so give me a minute for this, okay?"

"I-I guess?" you say unsure and watch with mild curiosity as she picks up the pencil and slowly starts drawing again. However, after finally starting a conversation with Ami, you don't want it to cease yet, even for a minute.

"A-Ami... H-how has the hospital stay been?" you begin with slight hesitation, "How long do you have to stay here?"

The girl briefly raises her head from the notebook and bites the pencil in thought, "Hmm... I guess the hospital isn't that bad? The doctors say that I only have strains, albeit bad ones, in my legs. I think I'll be here for a day or two, before being released back home to recover."

You sigh in relief. It seems that her tenure with the witch didn't result in great injuries then.

"I-I'm glad... S-stay safe, please..." you say before switching the topic to something less likely to bring up the witch, "S-so, how's your life been otherwise? I-I mean, in school, home..."

"Hmm, I suppose I'm doing mostly fine myself... I still go to the International Middle School and- huh?" sudden realization seems to flash in the girl's eyes, but she shakes it off. Still, something seems to have changed in her expression, but you can't quite place it.

"Well, that can probably wait for a second," she suddenly says and offers the notebook to you, "I think it is done now!"

You take the drawing to your hands and take a closer look. The fourth girl seems much more lively now. No longer just a blurry shape without a face, she is now clearly holding hands with the other girl next to her and wholly present. She has closed her eyes in relief, but there is only a hint of a smile on her face. Perhaps that can eventually be fixed too...

"Do you think the girl was finally found then? She seems to have found a way of her own there at the very least, even if it took longer."

What do you do?

God damnit.

We can't pick the hug and cry option yet but I really, REALLY want to!

Part of me wants Tamiko to question why Amy broke it off with her. From a meta perspective, I'm interested in seeing the curse from a someone affected's perspective. From a not meta standpoint, I don't think it would be odd for Tamiko to wonder why Amy left her in the first place.

But it's too soon at the very least. Maybe later.
