Project Ludovico

Y'know, I never saw this movie, but I think I'll see it soon since the review is so positive.

Side note: It always feels weird (for me) to look back at stuff from the 90's...The TV, the movies, the comics, the cartoons, stuff like that.

They had these attitudes that try to be one thing, but they end up coming across to me as another thing (usually, things meant to cool feel obnoxious to me, or things meant to be serious feel twee).

One constant is that I can't pin down just how cynical or idealistic 1990's America actually was - it feels like an awkward half-measure most times. Probably a result of the Cold War jjjuuuust ending?

Well, it starts out with all this cynical energy from the now-grown-up Baby-Boomers trying to show that they haven't totally sold out and become their parents, and Gen-X being all angry and Punk...and then the low-level war we've been fighting for 40+ years that we've all been expecting to end in Apocalyptic Nuclear Fire just suddenly stops, with our arch-foe keeling over and dying. Oh, and so far as anyone can tell, it's in large part because of Ronald Reagan, the old man liberals love to hate.

How is an establishment-hating cynic supposed to respond to that?

Clinton era - political sex scandals blowing up were the zeitgeist.
Yeah, but I mean there's political sex scandals, and then there's specifically having a stroke inside the woman with which you're having infidelitous sex. When I said The Distinguished Gentleman pulled the same thing, I mean exactly the same thing. The only difference is that it was a congressman rather than the president, and he actually does die.

I mean I'd say one was riffing on the other, except Eddie Murphy is the comedian, and his movie came out first!

The little death turning into the big one was pretty cliche long before the Nineties. Given they're both comedy films about corruption in politics, it's unsurprising they'd pick it as an amusing way for the intentionally unsympathetic dirty politician to go. You wouldn't want them dying in a slow and dignified manner of cancer or something to give them sympathy, nor undercut the comedy by veering their demise too heavily into actual heavy evil stuff.
Admittedly, it's traditionally a heart attack, but stroke works too.

It also has the benefit of being something that actually happened - French President Felix Faure died in the midst of having sex with his mistress, securing his legacy as the source of countless amazing puns.

So, I've been thinking about campaigning again for the patreon and wanted to know peoples opinions?

Ow, that's gotta hurt. Have you considered going to a hospi- oh right, you're American. I'm not sure what to suggest, so I'm just going to say that I hope that you are able to make a quick and complete recovery.
I managed to be quick enough on the draw to reduce most of the damage but it hurts like hell and is over a fair area D:

So I'm still trying to work out the levels here but if anyone can support the project through the Needing More Love patreon, it would go a long way.

The length of the articles written has increased quite a lot since I started and I'm trying to increase the frequency to match. Supporting the project goes a long way to helping that goal and ensuring a better availability of titles. We thank you for any support you may give :)

So real question: Did I ever actually review The Swarm or did I just imagine I did?

Also got my second replacement phone and will be moving towards a bunch of updates. :)

First off, nice new Avatar.

Secondly, according to the Threadmarks... Nope.
I get the feeling I wrote it somewhere at some time but I can't find it and it's weird.
Who was your old avatar? And who is your avatar now?
Old avatar was Pirate Mom from Mouretsu Pirates and the new one is from Legion.

Kinda looks like Frodo to me, but I'm pretty sure a male avatar would be off brand for her.
It's Lenny from Legion. I'm going to make a better version but I was screencapping on my phone.
