Year: 1935 EC

Greetings Colonel,

With the beginning of the Second Great War you have been assigned to the Southern front to the 6th Army Group. You are to take command of a brigade that has recently lost its commander due to unfortunate circumstances. Serve your nation with honor.

Army HQ

In front of you lies:

[] An ornate, almost archaic set of maroon armor resting proudly on a stand. It looks like it has been cleaned recently. On the bed is a neatly arrayed formal black uniform with gold trimming. A black officer's cap sits on top with golden eagle displayed on the front.

[] A light tan field uniform, worn from heavy use, is haphazardly folded over a chair. The shirt sleeves trail on the floor and an oval helmet rests on its side. A pristine white uniform lies solemnly on a table nearby. A trouser leg hangs precariously over the edge.

OOC: Two cookies for whoever guesses the setting right.

Chosen Brigade: Heavy Foot
Order of Battle: 2 light battalions, 3 heavy battalions, 1 armoured battalion

Light battalions: Generally filled with recon elements that focus on intelligence gathering and marksmanship. Brigades that focus on these battalions are fast moving, gather intel on enemy positions easily and most importantly take less resources to supply. However they possess less anti-tank capability than other battalions and little in the way of armored assets. Quite good for wooded terrain and decent on urban terrain.

Most common unit types: Scout, Sniper
Less common unit types: Shock Trooper, Light Tank
Very Rare unit types: Lancer, Engineer, Medium Tank

Heavy battalions: Commonly filled assault troops and anti-tank personnel. Specialise in storming fortified positions and can fight enemy tanks adequately. Has an assortment of light to medium tanks. Though relatively quick moving, these troops are more suitable for actual fighting than recon. Brigades focusing on these battalions require more resources than a light troop but less than a tank battalion. Quite good for urban fighting.

Most common unit types: Shock Trooper, Lancer, Light tank
Less common unit types: Scout, Medium Tank
Very Rare unit types: Sniper, Heavy tank, Engineer

Armored battalions: Spearheads of many offensives in current doctrine, they contain heavy firepower. Focus primarily on armour, carry all types of tanks. Requires flat ground for maximum effectiveness, reduced capability on broken ground (hilly & mountainous terrain). Cavalry brigades require heavy resources to maintain and operate less effectively when undersupplied. The numerous heavier tanks slow the speed of the battalion down. Intelligence gathering capabilities are minimal, the enemy will hear you before you see them. However, it's still a tank army, just roll over your enemies.

Most common unit types: Light Tank, Medium Tank,
Less common unit types: Scout, Shock Trooper, Engineer, Heavy tank
Very Rare unit types: Lancer, Sniper

Since no one's guessed it, the setting is Valkyria Chronicles. The two choices are sorta obvious now, though one more than the other.

I only played the second one, but let's give it a shot anyways!

OOC: The above vote is still active, since the cat's out of the bag might as well let you make your character.

There's been a mix up in the paperwork and the identification card you were supposed to be issued has been misplaced. Please fill out this form to get your new ID card.

[X] Rudolph Habsburg

Your family has a long history of serving with the empire. Coming from a noble family, your family always has had connections within the Empire. Your grandfather was a notable statesmen, and was known for giving out pompous speeches to motivate the population. Your father served during the first Europan war, and served it with honor. Under his guidance he was able to secure Ragnite for the Empire's forces. During the later years of the war, he held the line against countless offenses to reclaim the lands.

Your are his first son, and through his connections you have found yourself appointed as a brigade commander. Your family awaits the tales of your glory. They wish to see the Empire's majesty restored.

Your subordinates may balk at you for your youth. But you have been groomed for this life, you have yet to lead, but your youth gives you a unique perspective. Who knows? Perhaps you may help lead the forces of the Empire to victory. Or, perhaps your fate is to fail, and die a disgrace to your families name.

I'd prefer an older character since thats commensurate of the rank but this is Valkyria Chronicles so twenties is fine. Though if you want a teenaged brigade commander your going to need a special reason, like noble connections if your Empire.

Here's what the uniforms look like. The first faction is the Empire, which is the the villain faction in the games and one of the two titans duking it out for the Europan contintent.
Couldn't find a full picture of it but its similar to this (the standard infantry attire) but coloured red. The outfit is the one the officers and imperial aces use in VC1.

I found the top part of one here, its the colour of the guy on the right. Of course you can take off the visor for better vision, I heard the anime does that.

The ceremonial dress uniform looks something like this, but with less gold bling or cape since you're not a general.
The other faction is the Federation, their not really shown much in the games so I took liberties with their uniforms. I was always disappointed we weren't shown more of the massive war going on outside Gallia and the only Federation troops we fought in VC1 were wearing stock Gallian uniforms. Makes sense for infiltration purposes I guess.
Field uniform

Ceremonial uniform

A boer war era British uniform and a naval dress uniform. Figured it could use some class to sell it since no one's heard much of the Federation.

(How on Europa would someone become a Colonel at 22?!)

During the Great War you were a young clerk, pressed into service because you could read and write both languages used in your home city. When your captain was ordered to find a Federation group that had slipped past the front lines you were brought along to copy the reports into Rivertounge. You distinguished yourself by rallying the Company after a sniper volley struck down the Captain and other officers. Armed with nothing but a radio you turned a panic into a quick counter-attack and helped re-established the chain of command.

For this you were sent to become an officer, after an abbreviated training you returned to the front. You are famed for thriving in the middle of exhausting battlefield conditions, a nearly preternatural ability to dodge, and for keeping up with the paperwork the army sends your way.

Just for clarification, I haven't playing anything apart from VC1. So thats my main inspiration, won't be taking anything from other games unless I like it. Then again, this isn't going to be an average VC quest so it'll be pretty accessible to anyone who hasn't heard of the franchise.

Current vote count:
Imperial: 9 votes
Federation: 2 votes

Rudolf Hapsburg is in the lead but only has 3 votes.

It faction vote seems clear cut I'd like to keep it open for another day or two. This quest was partially inspired from rdc's Code Geass quest Harpy of Britannia and people made some pretty cool write-in characters. I'd also like the winning character to have more votes so there's more consensus. Meanwhile, some more char creation decisions will be up soon.

Valkyria always has rather young commanders. Besides, we would be the new blood, perfect time to innovative some new tactics.

OOC: The quest is going to be larger in scale than the games or other VC quests. Instead of squad based combat, it will be mostly mid-level army command.

What type of brigade do you command?

[] Light foot brigade: 3 light battalions, 2 heavy battalions, 1 armoured battalion

[] Heavy foot brigade: 2 light battalions, 3 heavy battalions, 1 armoured battalion

[] Cavalry brigade: 2 light battalions, 3 armoured battalions

Time for Blitzkrieg! We will drown our enemies in shells! Plus, they are a great unit to use against our enemies.
