Huh.

With us terraforming worlds, uplifting species and constructing grand marvels. We really do mirror the Old Ones in a suprisingly beautiful way

Here we are, a battered, low species that were tricked into losing their souls for revenge and immortality, becoming slaves to a greater power.

Now that we're free we can possibly take up the Old Ones mantle of tending to and uplifting life, not out of greed or malice or desperation for soldiers, but because no species should ever have to suffer the same way we did. Nobody should have see their kin sicken and die from the curse of an uncaring god creature. Nobody should have to sell their souls to obtain revenge or immortality. And nobody should have to witness the perils of the immaterium

We will take up the mantle that the Old Ones and their petulant, arrogant children abused and squandered. And we will heal this galaxy.

I for one, can't wait for us to start/finish some really unique avenues of research. The Cascade Drives have some remarkable potential that would allow us to maintain a vast Empire on the cheap. While Psionics should allow us to employ some devastating battlefield strategies, perhaps even enhancing the technology we already have (like mind control scarabs and the Bane).

I think that we need to undertake extensive research of the Imperium mindset (for strong and weak points). Nevenoch should study Imperial Creed and review results from others, Sovenkh - martial manuals and laws, Lasthule - the relations between factions. This should notably improve our rolls against Imperium. Even a small bonus would help in covering our Mindshackle infiltration. Also, some fruits of this research would benefit our new military academy.

Also, that Trader looks rather suspicious for offering us information on Segmentum Solar.

Another note for the future is to have Jornakh (Learning 20) do the biotransference research for Serano. And with recent progress in Aether research, disarming biotransference should become easier.

Well, we found the Rogue Trader. He's simply offering whatever he could to have access to our technology. I'm presuming he's presuming that we would find out said information anyways through other sources, after all it isn't that hard to bribe certain Navy personnel to do the same. Though obviously his information network would be much more encompassing and as such is valuable to us.

And as mentioned, we don't really have a "need' for more Necron manpower via biotransference. We would possibly need such a thing when the Sirano colonize out of system (and will need such a thing if we were to continue our vassalage of them). That or when we begin conducting extended multiple land campaigns, where throwing suboptimal Sirano clone armies at the [rpblem won't be enough.

Plan: Flying Under the Auspex

The Cardinal
Over the next five years you have the opportunity to slowly influence the thoughts of the cardinal. Guiding her attitudes in slow but sure ways to make it look like genuine changes of attitude
[X] Guide her toward requests which are less deliberately harmful against you and yours

The Captains
Over the next five years you will have the opportunity to guide the developments of the captains you have successfully infected. In which way do you want them to lean
[X] Instill competence, diligence and ambition in these captains. Attempt to raise their level of competency so that you may influence more than merely three escort captains.

The Rouge Trader
The Rouge Trade is offering access to the information he has. Covering much of Segmentum Soar and Pacificus, in exchange for access to small amounts of Necron Artifice.
[X] Accept his proposal

[X] Share your newfound knowledge of the Cascade Drive

Chronomancy re-roll
[X] Do not use it yet

Expanding on my previous idea, if we would get good rolls on the study of the Imperium mindset, then we should share our findings.
Another important thing to consider is offering cooperation (and inviting all the interested parties) on the study of Aether, this should accelerate overall progress.
Both options might increase our Respect stat.
Also, good rolls on both Imperium and Aether studies might allow us the creation of high-spec psykers which might become an efficient power multiplier for us and a high-grade commodity for others.
Actually, the creation of stable Alpha (or Alpha+) grade psykers might be a worthy challenge for Nevenoch.

alpha psykers are too much of a risk, they are in the realm of ''a hundred of them would give pre-golden throne emps a run for his money''
we shouldnt create them untill we are totally sure they are friendly and loyal as well utterly integrated on necrontyr conglomerate (we are including new races,so cultural exchange is inevitable) culture

I'm on board with sharing some information of the Imperium with the wider Necron society, provided it doesn't equate to us giving up our advantages.
I'm also on board with sharing SOME of the results of our Aether research. Particularly the points on how to counter their application, as said information would benefit all of Necron society while costing us very little.
Hopefully, our actions would garner us more respect and perhaps even garner the good will of the Triarch. Rare is the Necron that shares, even when it may be beneficial for the good of the entire race.

Edit; We will also need to have a private meeting with the Triarchs. As there is a traitor Necron Dynasty assisting the Imperium. So much so, that they provided intelligence of our Tombworld onto the Imperium. This will garner us support from the Triarchs, if nothing else but to have us in turn use Imperial networks to find said traitor.

Remnants of the damned

Normally when Nevanoch wishes to share the results of her work with you, she does so in a public forum. All the better to garner the fame and prestige she craves as much as your Nemessor. Thus you were quite shocked when she requested that you and you alone came to discuss the ramifications of her work into the aether. At, of course, your own convenience. You had emphasized the importance on keeping information in regards to new discoveries to a minimum, but some dissemination is required at some point, what could have prompted such a level of paranoia?

Thus several days after her message you deign to at last discuss with her what she has discovered. Your own curiosity would have had you come earlier, but it did have to be demonstrated that a cryptek could not merely summon her overlord at her convenience. Nevertheless, you teleport to the great pyramid being constructed under the pole of Daeloth and approach the lab which has been chosen specifically as Nevenochs own. Supplying the seventy three passwords required, the two blackstone slabs carved in the glyphs of the psychomancers grind open and allow you entrance into the darkness of your crypteks lair.

Immediately the sensors that pass for your olfactory senses are assailed with the surprising and revolting stench of flesh. In surprise you survey her laboratory, looking past a half dozen actively glowing or oscillating experiments to focus upon the source of mortalities smell. Finally you spot six seemingly human brains, suspended in midair via repulsor fields, each festooned with at least two dozen varied apparatus piercing deep into each brains various glands and nerve centers.

From across the room you hear the sibiline hiss of Nevenochs voice, raised in approval "Ah, my lord Levnekh, I was curious which of these small matters would garner your attention first. I must say, you have excellent taste"

You turn and find her half hidden behind a great orb of glass, containing some form of whirling blue energy, as if Nevonoch had captured a cyclone of luminescent water to place as decoration in her lab. "And exactly what has garnered my attention cryptek. This seems to me little more than a task for the morticians"

She shakes her head, voice barely raising above a self satisfied whisper "Hardly my lord, this, this is an experiment to further refine the Bane. You see, i've cloned the consciousness of our… indisposed human admiral admiral and am running it through dozens of variations of the banes... effects." She walks up to one of the hovering brains and places her third hand against it, as if soothing a panicking pet . "This one is showing exceptional progress, with predicted full collapse of higher order thinking occurring 2.4% faster than the present operating protocols of the bane."

You nod thoughtfully, distasteful yes, but useful you suppose, and yet still you find yourself grateful that such experiments will now be taking place some distance from your palace. Still, There was a reason for your visit, and you stride away from the hovering, quivering flesh "I doubt however that this is what caused you to disturb me from the task of ruling my realm." You glare balefully as you turn back to your high servant "What have you managed to achieve in regards to the aether Nevenoch?"

She matches your stare for some time, before eventually nodding, matching steps with you as you slowly circle the large space she has made her lair. Glancing between the myriad devices which litter the chamber "Of course, Levnekh, I believe you shall be quite satisfied with what I have discovered this year. She looks toward you as you walk, wariness in the witchfire of her largest eye. "Be warned however overlord. What I speak of may alter completely how you view the universe and our place within it"

You cock your head, Nevenoch being grandiose in her statements was nothing new, but to claim to overturn the established theories of the Necrons. Such was an absurd claim. Still though, exaggeration was a common failing of your kind, punishment could wait until she had actually disappointed you. Thus you wait patiently for her to continue and do so.

Eventually Nevenoch speaks again, seeing you are unwilling to break the silence as you slowly pace. "Firstly, my lord. I have spent the past year working with the so-called choruses of the Sirano. Teams of their aether touched brethren, working together to cause localized effects. A grouping I have found necessary to utilize, for individually, their mystics cannot match up to even human 'psykers' let alone those of our ancient enemies. Yet even working with such poor instruments, my genius has been able to create a crude sensor for identifying the energy they use it is moved from form to form within the aether."

This is what she had to show you? You allow a note of condescension to slip into your voice. "We have had such technology for millennia, Nevenoch. We use it presently on Kaisov and all our other new primitive realms" you pointedly touch the golden serpent coiled around your arm, "Do tell me you have not wasted my time and resources with such rudimentary science"

She sighs before her tone changes to faux disappointment, surprising, considering how close to testing her immortality she is. "My lord, I expected better of one so skilled in our arts. Yes, we know and indeed have known for some time how to detect psychic emanations and how to block them. However, much as how an immortals harness can block anything from, a primitive laser bolt, to a synaptic disintegrator. We could put up crude though effective defences, wrought to inelegantly defend against all. What we were unable to do however was identify individual frequency or " she sighs" 'spells' within the aether, or divine their purpose. For aeons we have been holding the shields of blackstone or null zone pylons before us, never knowing the nature of any threat that assailed us. Now, rather than such a crude, passive defense, we could perhaps utilize active countermeasures. Devise ways to pinpoint their source, even across the depths of space! Or at the very least disrupt them at range"

You withdraw your hand from the gaze of the serpent, the golden snake slithering back up your arm seeming disappointed at not getting the chance to be utilized, perhaps your cryptek did have reason for her grandiose claims. "And have you mastered any such methodologies yet Nevenoch?"

She spreads her arms across the length and breadth of her laboratory, encompassing the entire room. "There are near a half dozen avenues we can consider my lord, this experiment is but the first stepping stone among many now that a basic understanding of the aether has been achieved. Even enslaving a certain subset of human mutants could be useful, if it is so desired. However," She stops and turns to face you " The reason I asked specifically for your presence and yours alone, is that you, I, and every single necron above the ranks of the immortals are being assailed even at this moment from the aether."

She holds up her hands placatingly as you immediately run diagnostics across your databanks, while simultaneously scanning the laboratory for any hidden threats. Eventually however, locating nothing, you are forced to listen as Nevenoch continues her monologue. "I have only been able to identify it with my first attempts at this technology because it is so constant and in the currents of the Aether, and somehow able to in part in fact overcome even Blackstone's defenses. And there is only one real candidate for what it could be"

You think for some time before you reach the in-hindsight obvious conclusion "The curse of Rak-shul? ...Its still active after all this time?

Nevenoch nods solemnly. "Perhaps stronger than ever. Supposedly, as far as I am willing to trust the Sirano's mystics, this is one of the reasons mortals fear us so. We are bathed always in an aura of death and decay, which all mortals, to one extent or another can detect.

You consider that for a moment "It is fortunate then that we are immune now, it was the reason after all that we grasped immortalities poison chalice.

You expected the cryptek to give her assent again, but instead she shakes her head. "Perhaps not as poisoned as we once thought my lord, nor our immortality so sacrosanct"

You reel back as if struck "Explain!"

"Our souls, as the Sirano poetically put it. Were annihilated by the biotransference, the resulting energy fed to the star gods insatiable hunger. Only, this seems to have performed a dual purpose. Rak-shuls' curse was an attack from the immaterium, its purpose, as we are well aware. To destroy us slowly and painfully through our connection to that realm. After the biotransference it had nowhere to assault, our bodies rendered inviolate and our souls, thoroughly shattered, incapable of being targeted."

Your tempted to resort to scathing sarcasm, but settle for bitterness "So they thought to save us in the cruelest manner possible. From there perspective it is wise as well, what use are slaves after all, if they cannot serve for eternity"

"Indeed, but there are matters that we were incapable perhaps of grasping, perhaps even they, masters of the material though they may have been. Matters which the Sirano...mystics have been able to shed light upon." she hesitates for a moment as if gathering her resolve "If their word is taken for truth, the meagre connection to the warp which we as necrontyr once possessed. Has, for some few of our kind, been gradually repaired."

"We are machines now, such should be beyond us"

"Yes Overlord, such has ever been the thought. But each of the lesser races we know of have tales and theories which revolve around even base machines being capable of such a feat. Barbarians though they all may be, they have insight into this we simply can never possess. It seems all those beings capable of thought, true thought, are also capable of forming a link to the warp. And it seems that we, the Necron nobility, have restored, in part our links to that realm. Not powerfully, not significantly, but enough that the curse of Rak-Shul once again has a target.

As the shock of her statements begin to wear off you begin to feel dread creep up your spine, interrupting her as she continues. "And while our bodies are inviolate...our minds are not" After all, a truly inviolate mind would be an automaton. Incapable of learning, much like what your citizenry has been rendered unto. Ironically, In securing your own personhood over that of the lower castes you had only secured a longer, somehow more dreadful demise.

She crosses her arms with irritation as you interrupt her but still waits until you are concluded before nodding. "Just so my lord. Thus why the lower castes succumb so little to these maladies that seem to strike at us. They lack the capability to reforge their bonds to the Aether. Furthermore, it is also why the destroyer cults arise from seemingly nothing, no matter how often we cull them. They aren't a disease, even if they do seem to spread their curse, they are merely a symptom. And that fell plague is only the most notable malady afflicted by the curse. Though certainly it is one of the most harmful to our long term survival."

You look beyond your cryptek, staring again into that swirling blue Maelstrom you saw as you entered. Mind whirling over what you have learned today. Finally you're forced to ask "Why now then, why haven't we emerged into the galaxy mindless killers? Bent only to the destruction of all"

She raises her arms in a helpless gesture. "That I do not know my lord. It has certainly had an effect over the great sleep, many were the changes wrought upon us as we emerged, though even then, far less than my projections would estimate. Some Sirano, Lore, suggests that a facet of decay has arisen in the aether over the past several thousand years and may be empowering the curse. Alternatively, perhaps it took that long for the damage to be inflicted by the biotransference to be restored, and thus render us vulnerable. Perhaps our hibernation in Blackstone chambers and null fields for a large part offered us protection... I would have to perform more studies to be sure."

You feel a familiar feeling a doom fall upon you which had so recently lifted. "And how long before our immortality fails us completely"

A note of hope enters your psychomancers tone. "Fortunately my lord, we still have time, in abundance actually. But in another ten millennia, barring those of extreme, uncompromising will, none would truly remain as we once were.

You allow your cryptek to see you relax fractionally as she says that. That was a timescale that can be worked with. Still even if the threat is still distant, it would have to be dealt with. "We have work to do then" you pronounce as you again survey her macabre experiments, this time from a far more appraising angle.

- A half dozen new researches have been unlocked

- You have discovered that the curse of Rak-shul is still active, even after 56 million years bathing the Necrons in an Aetheric deluge of death and decay. This is why Necrons exude an aura of death over and above their more mundane ominous nature as robot skeletons.

- It appears that the Ctan did not only separate the Necrontyr from their souls to feed their own ravenous appetites, but also to ensure longevity of their slaves

- The Necron Race has not achieved true Immortality after all. Though it will take tens of thousands of years, nearly all Necrons will fall to degeneracy eventually

Jesus christ

I knew the necrons had to be soul sick

Well, time to go full ascendance and take the mantle to guide/protect/nurture the galaxy as the old ones did once

But now with bad ass science instead if purely psiquic migth

The fucking Rak-shul curse returns. We at least have some significant time before we start being at serious risk, but the very fact that the unlife that the Necrons were given is imperfect is vexing. Once we have made our realm properly prosperous we need to work on undoing this, and along the way perhaps learning more ways of utilizing the Immaterium for our benefit.

Uh oh.

Wonder if we can find some strong enough psykers to break the curse of Rak-Shul? (The Eldar definitely wont help us, maybe the Imperium can offer some psyker support?)

But still, the 10,000 year deadline is concerning.

I think that this could unite Necrons once more in pursuit of the final cure and this discovery could really give her (and us) a lot of respect when published. Somehow, my idea of cooperation in Aether research seems even more beneficial.
Also, shattering of the soul, which is still a part of the Biotransference, should help delay the effects of the curse.

Yeah. It seems as though the effects of the curse could be delayed or attenuated by spending time inside psychically shielded spaces (blackstone/null chambers). That would be the most obvious protective measure.

Also, shattering of the soul, which is still a part of the Biotransference, should help delay the effects of the curse.
Since the curse is Necrontyr-specific, and since all Necrontyr have already undergone biotransference, this is true but I'm not sure it's relevant.

Maybe Blackstone amulets can be used to cut off the warp effects.

Neat, the research would come in useful for our next research on the Necronization process. Looks like when we build the Obelisks for the Sirano, we will also be using said facilities to optimize our conditions.

Wait a minute...

The Silent King didnt go into stasis and has been active for 65+ million years.

If his mental faculties are intact then maybe theres something about him that prevents this degeneration? Something we might be able to replicate

If not... then we might be in for trouble

Either way i think we should find a way to warn the Triarchy about this, they probably have more resources and crypteks than us

Very concerning indeed.

The Lost and the Found (The Illithan League)
Quietly reaching out to Imperial worlds was ever going to be an interesting endeavor. For their empire is proud and would likely look quite unkindly upon our efforts, even if doing so is stipulated as being allowed by the pact. Thus you elected that the first such meeting would be distant from imperial eyes and searched the records of Kaisov to locate a suitable candidate. Eventually finding a system is in the ancient records of sector Eridor that fit your desires. To the immediate galactic south of your home Televene, the sector was lost millenia ago to Wagghh Yasquig. Yet not all the systems of that sector fell simultaneously, and indeed the system Illithan, a meagre civilised world, hidden on three sides by near impenetrable nebulae, remained in contact with the Imperium until almost 1300 years ago, where they simply vanish from imperial records, forgotten.

Ancient designs for small scout vessels are collected from ancient databanks and quickly manufactured in the great shipyards above your capital, all three ships, whose lords are chosen specifically for their surreptitiousness by are then quietly launched south, while no imperial observers are present in the system, ready to discover what has become of this lost imperial system.

------------------------

Shiplord Ja'hanak awoke from her hibernation slowly, as her body slowly sought power from the ships reactors to restart its own internal workings. A hibernation of two months was however far easier to be restored from than that of the long sleep, thus it was only a few minutes before she fully awoke upon the throne of her small vessel. She looked down to a far smaller throne to the left of her own, where her lychguard, ever faithful Nephep had piloted the vessel for the duration of the journey.

"Ah Nephep, what would I be able to get done without you! Tell me, have we nearly arrived at this Triarch forsaken system"

The Lychguard doesnt look up from his monitor as he responds in a mechanical monotone. "Prior performance when separated from myself indicates a 24.4% drop in overall performing efficiency, significantly reducing the likelihood of anything actually getting done. As to the matter of the Illithan system. I felt it prudent to awaken you before we begin approaching the range where their vox transmissions become comprehensible"

Ja'hanak glared at her subordinate. "Vargo Ellendite doesn't count. That overgrown toad summoned a singularity! Regardless, we agreed that time dilation does not indicate a loss in efficiency! "She shakes her head before returning to the true matter at hand. "Have the other lords yet awoken from their slumber?"

Nephep merely shrugs. "Records indicate that we never reached an accord on the matter, until then such technicalities are still a matter to be decided." Looking up and seeing his Lady's disinterest, he continued on the true discussion rather than this oft repeated argument ". As to the matter of the other lords, It appears as though the ship lord of the "shadowed hand" has been awake for several days for an unknown reason. While I have sent a missive to awaken the mistress of the Twilight Reave"

"Very good, we shall have to revisit the matter of time dilation another time, for now I must hold council!" With that said a link was opened to the two other shiplords whose ships were travelling in formation with her own. "Greetings, my worthy lords, I have summoned this quorum to discuss what shall be found in this 'Illithan' as we close in on our quarry"

In reply, from the Reave, Raketep has a note of irritation in her voice. "I was awoken, several hours before it was required, so you could hypothesise, Ja'hanak? Please do tell me you jest."

"Hardly, dear friends, no. I have awoken you this early, Because I believe we're going to find three former imperial worlds, fighting over the scraps of the system, as they wait to be saved by their long departed empire. And i'm willing to bet my foundries on the edge of the Ukush peninsula, should either of you get closer to the mark.

Silence lasts for a few seconds before Shiplord Malek, who had remained silent until now finally responds. "Ah, so that is the game you are playing. Very well Ja'hanak, I offer up my claims in the third orpheus asteroid cluster in the Ashtaka system should I lose. While I believe your on the right track Ja'hanak, their natural defences probably mean that the humans have withstood the orks for now. But, given that these are barbarians, I believe their society will be slowly collapsing under its own weight as the the vultures slowly circle their crumbing excuse for a civilization.

Ja'hanak, chuckles softly. A straightforward choice by a straightforward lord. Much as she had expected from the traditionalist Malek. "And you Raketep?"

An expectant pause last for some time before Raketep sullenly joins in "Fine, In my estimation, the humans long ago lost their war against the Orks and now their planets are nothing but a hive of vermin for us to root out, once our 'mighty overlord' is done pandering to the Imperials every whim. As for my wager, I offer up my estate in the hinterlands of Yervum." She pauses." Are we quite finished with this now Ja'hanak?

Satisfied with the bargains she has struck, Ja'hanak acknowledges and closes the channel. Now at least this mission would be interesting, one way or the other.

---------------------------

Despite the ships stealth capabilities, it is still decided to only venture into the very edges of the system in order to decide the next course of action, especially once it is discovered what lies within. For the system has changed much in the last thousand years. Defying the odds and slowly turning from a poor but civilised world into three developed planets. Over ten billion humans call this system home, though many changes have been wrought upon them.

Simple collection of their broadcasts indicate vast changes have occurred, for the system actively despises the Imperium and has rejected the imperial truth. A holiday is in fact celebrated each year, commemorating when Rhudar, the third planet in the system, was cleansed of the last holdouts old imperial loyalists. Who after centuries, had refused to believe that the imperium had abandoned them, or perhaps even worse, forgotten them completely. Now, having turned away from the imperium they call themselves the Illithan League, a very loose arrangement dedicated to protecting their system from Ork invaders or the Imperium, should it ever return. The league however it seems, has very little direct control over the planets which are themselves fiercely independent of each other.

The closest planet to the sun is named Cardlan, and it is a scorched world. Not so hot as to make it barren, though even its most hospitable climes would be termed parched on more temperate worlds. Perhaps the least politically stable of the three planets, it seems cardlan is occasionally rocked by wars and intervene civil strife, with its sibling planets warily and distantly watch, as the primitive but numerous siege scale mass drivers Carlan has in orbit act as a crude, though effective deterrent. Presently it is ruled by a coalition of warlords under their hegemonic warlord leader.

Rhudar is the third planet of the system and the largest of the three. Though it also carries the misfortune of being tidally locked to its star, the planet has only a single habitable band that runs around its entire circumference. With the sunward facing of the planet covered in an incredibly vast desertscape, while the starward facing an equally large field of ice and tundra. The monarchial government, descended distantly from the old imperial governors has established vast terraforming stations upon the planet's surface, which focus on slowly expanding and maintaining that habitable band. With much of the fiction produced upon Rhudar focussed upon the potential catastrophe that could occur if some rogue faction took over one of these devices.

Finally, the second planet, Thedain is the most habitable of the three. A world of many large fertile islands, surrounded by vast oceans, for the world is nearly 80% covered in ocean. Interestingly, there is no central government of Thedain, with many of the larger islands being nations unto themselves, holding no allegiance but to themselves and then very loosely the larger Illithan League, which looks out for the systems greater protections. Still the larger nations of Thedaid compete with with planetary governments of Rhudar and Cardlan, such is the disparity in population if not resources.

The League itself derives the fuel and material to keep itself functioning from the bounty of the system itself, rather than relying on the planets to give or take funding at a whim. With several smaller and less bountiful mining systems also providing the material to keep their fleet operational. A small force of a few light cruisers, several escorts and a few dozen lighter craft, each vessel mounting a frankly obscene quantity of strike craft for its size. they are apparently sufficient to push back any small ramshackle ork fleets which get lost in the nebulas and arrive in the system. Though the subject of many military dramas for the humans are their once a generation quests to lost human worlds in search of advanced technology. Or the threat of an actual directed Ork Waagghh.

-----------------------------------

After spending three days observing the mortals and their petty concerns, Ja'hanak departs from the world to seek instruction for how to proceed from Daeloth itself. Clearly, the humans have somehow thrived rather than collapsed, and this opens the door for negotiations. Especially as the Imperium still seems to consider them lost. What do you seek to do with this small star nation

Pick one of the following

[ ] Inform the Imperium of their existence

[ ] Attempt to open negotiations with them (Kanatakor Aken will perform negotiations)

[ ] Attempt to open negotiations with them and bring ships to add weight to your words (Kanatakor Aken will perform negotiations)
  • [ ] What spare vessels do you bring as a show of force

[ ] Attempt to surreptitiously open negotiations with one of the various factions of this system
  • [ ] The warlord of Cardlan
  • [ ] The King of Rhudar
  • [ ] An island nation of Thedain
  • [ ] The Leagues Admiralty

[ ] This system would make a fine (though distant) addition to your collection
  • [ ] Assign any spare vessels to attempt a conquest
