I gotta wonder if Wardes is already playing him.
In cannon Ward's didn't turn traitor till he joined the military and was forced to come fate to face with the research that killed his parents, in the form of its destruction and he was forced to kill the homunculus people they'd created. This led him to hate nobility for its obligations and the system that he finds responsible for all of his life's tragedy.

Henry may have already butterflied away Wardes's traitorous tendencies just by being his friend. Henry remarked upon Wardes overcoming despair at a young age, but perhaps if he did not have any social connections then Wardes would not be anywhere near as well adjusted. The Valliere family is as loyalist, pro-establishment as they come, so making a friend of Henry must have had an affect on how Wardes views Tristain.

"May I have your blessing to write correspondence to thy sister?" Wardes asked.

I blinked. "Thee ask me, Lord Wardes? Why not my parents?"

"I have a feeling you would be harder to convince than them," Wardes pointed out with a small smile on his face.

"You may," I said with a warm smile. "Of course you may," I continued. "Though break her heart, and I will shatter your spine," I added in a whisper.
Leaving aside the fact that his parents explicitly shot this idea down already, Cattelya hasn't even been introduced to Wardes why the fuck is Henry giving him her contact info.

Did I mention how much I was starting to like young-Wardes?

Because I really did like him. He had been tempered by despair at a young age, and had emerged strong, and with a definite charm to him that made it obvious he could actually fish his wife a bit further than what would normally be allowed by his status. He wasn't a whiny kid who went on a woe to me speech every two seconds -if I had to hear once more Count De la Tour D'Auvergne's son remark on how his clothes itched, I would probably tell Eleonore he needed etiquette lessons.
I do find it mildly hilarious that Eleonore was repulsed by an obvious sycophant, while Henry proceeded to make the guy who defaults to agreeing with him all the time and does whatever he asks into his BFF.

Henry's learned literally nothing about Wardes from interacting with him (3+ years of letters and he still didn't know about his family), while Wardes has been treated to long monologues about his inner thoughts and logic. Furthermore Wardes has already started using their friendship to start climbing the ladder. My honest opinion? Wardes is playing him like a fiddle.

Dafuq did you get that from? In canon Wardes' mother went insane because she discovered the Windstone Apocalypse would happen through her research and couldn't handle it. Homunculus had jack shit to do with anything, and his father was still alive.

But the important thing to note is that her cause of death was not suicide, it was due to Wardes accidentally shoving her down the stairs as a child (12). Wardes proceeds to feel super guilty and develops an Oedipus complex until a eight years later he (20) discovers the truth of her research, and devotes all his efforts to fulfilling her last wishes as a form of atonement. Unfortunately her last wishes were for him to go to the Holy Land, so he joins Reconquista and later Romalia to try piggybacking their crusades.

Obviously things are very different in this fic, as he's orphaned at 10 and both his parents were researchers.

Writing about magic also had its limits. Apparently one could get accused of heresy depending on what he wrote, or what was discovered. Using magic to light up a chimney? It was fine. Seeking out a chant whose purpose was specifically that of lighting up a chimney? Was it a Noble's chimney? Was it for the Noble's delight? Fine. Seeking out a chant to clean up the sewers? No! Preposterous! Heretical! Death to this heresy you foolish moron! Magic was a gift from the Founder, and as such was holy! Would you use the Bible as toilet paper? No! Would you use it to build castles? Were they holy castles?
A short note on this: It probably isn't quite that strict actually, even in paper. Do remember that the vast majority of the nobility is very petty nobility with no lands to call their own, and whom, in fact, work for a living. I mean, if I recall correctly, 1 in 10 of the population of Tristain are nobles (even if it's the country with proportionally the most mages), and there aren't even enough baronies for all these people.

And of these there are a whole range of professionals, from the guys who build the magical plumbing (If I recall correctly, the Academy for example, not only has running water but hot running water, as well as indoor toilettes), to a local hedge mage barely above a commoner him/herself, in more isolated areas, to major famous artisans and artists.

Da fuq? I know there are issues on heresy but they aren't that analysis retentive. Especially for the purpose of industry and public health.

That's like the nobles jobs. Better medicine and antiplague work would be of the good.

It's necromancer and trying to become a vampire that gets heresy charges.

Speaking of vampires. Dude wheres your god momma black ops vamps.

I stand corrected then I never got that far into the light novels as the copies on bakatsuki were spotted at best by the time I started reading them and that was my interpretation from how far I got mixed with the anime up to the romalia ark

For example, what kind of flame shapes were similar to what Founder Brimir used, how much wind should be used to blow out the decorative candle flames after festivals, conducting research on earthen materials for the purpose of making sacred grails and so on. Using fire magic to illuminate the streets; using wind magic to transport large quantities of goods; such research to use magic in normal daily life was considered quite vulgar and too lowly.

For the most part, in order to gain more understanding of God, they tried to figure out how to defend their ideals, and would not step out of the theology norm. If someone's research slightly deviated from the boundary, they would immediately be fastened to a "heretic" label, and in turn be banished or have their research suspended.

There were thirty members in the institution's magical research team, Eleonore being one of the primary researchers. She specialized in the earth element, her research devoted on how to create beautiful religious statues.

(The last part cracks me up. Eleonore, for all of her strictness, is probably searching for chants that 'make beautiful religious statues')

Ah, but remember that those restrictions go out the window if you slide the overseers enough bribes funds for research.

It still makes me laugh. A lot. XD

Like... "I am an important researcher at the Academy! I have the resources to seek out how to wield the powers of the elements, craft earthquakes, bring forth rains of fire-"

"Eleonore, Eleonore please, shut up. You spend your time in a room with ink and paper trying to write up a chant to make statues. You're a poet. A poet who does not have a penchant for rhymes, chanting or whatever it is."

"B-But im-important researcher!"

"You're a glorified sculptor!"

Anthropology is a science too. It's boring, but important.

Personally I found it funnier that her reaction to heresy was:
"It is very strange. They go as far as to request me to compromise and alter my body with the drug that can increase the strength of magic . . ."
"Is this not heresy? Magic is God's great undertaking; relying on drugs to strengthen magic and such . . . doesn't this bother God?"
Eleonore, knitting the brows of her face, said. Bailey nodded in agreement.
"I thought this as well, so I went to ask the council. But they simply said invariably, 'The purpose of this study is to come closer to God.'"
"Did you do it?"
Man dude, that project sounds like serious heresy! I NEED DETAILS.

I'm waiting for something to go horribly wrong (*cough*right*cough*) that will change the dynamic of the story. Or will nothing drastic happen until canon or Louise is born?

If Wardes still manages to join up with Reconquista it would be nice to see him like Henry enough that he tries to convince him to join as well.

I predict the SI will be engaged to the princess, thus derailing canon; And since being a SI is suffering, the princess will still cuckold him with Albion prince, Louise will feel conflicted about learning her friend betrayed his brother, and to add a worse situation...

Karin will find out.

Dude come on it's the middle ages, Cattelya doesn't have a private contact info like an email address. It was just Wardes asking permission if he could contact Cattelya. Remember, all correspondence goes through the parents-

Wait a minute this sounds shady as hell.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness, so of course creating a chant to clean the sewers would be God's work rather than Heresy.
How is 'cleanliness' next to 'godliness'? Are you talking about the backwards English dictionary?!? does one live at 1360 Discussion lane while the other resides in 1362 Discussion lane? Someone tell me please.....

so I can destroy them both at once!

Where's that from? But anyway, worth of noting that vulgar as putting magic to productive use might be, I'd bet it's more a matter of division between the (very) petty nobility and the "proper" nobility. A scion of the Valliere family doing something like that? Never! Generic dot no-name dot mage with no lands? A dude gotta eat and this proper noble guy needs someone to fix their magical plumbing since it'd be vulgar and inappropriate for them to do so. :p
