NieR Automata

I've seen that a few times, didn't realize it was rare tho.

I have like 60 hours in the game and I've never seen it once; I had no idea.

I mean, granted, goliaths are fairly rare and with the right chipsets/weapons/levels they can die pretty quick, so maybe they just don't get a lot of screentime in which to pull that particular move (I had no idea they had grab attacks either, for example).

Four months and two unauthorized graphics patches later, and I'm finally getting to play this game. I've not read literally most of this thread, at this point, because I want to avoid spoilers as much as humanly possible, but I did want to ping @Ford Prefect about something.

I did not think I'd be the kind of person to notice or care about the discrepancy between the Japanese VA and the English script subtitles, but apparently, I am. I guess I've watched enough anime at this point (and I did technically take one course of japanese once) that I can tell when the characters say something that the English subtitles have as something different. Sometimes it's totally different! It's weird and kind of jarring, in a very subtle way. It makes me wish the english subs had a "direct translation" feature rather than just be the english script, because what the Japanese VA is emoting is somewhat regularly different from what the english script is saying.

Despite that, the urge to switch to english VA is occasionally very strong, because more than once now the game has decided to exposit at length about the plot in the middle of a boss fight, and that makes reading subs real friggen difficult.

I'm not a native speaker, but I really liked the english VA, so... yeah.

I've finally gotten through Ending E. Definitely my game of the year, at this point.

I've played with the japanese and english voices back and forth, now, and I like both of them--english started turning in a good performance at the end--but I'm pretty sure the JA VA is better.

At any rate, now I'm on a deep dive for extraneous content, because there's apparently a bunch of this game that is not actually in the game, and now I also need to spend a week decompressing and unpacking. Yay!

So I am venturing into this thread despite fearing spoilers, because when I try to launch the game on my PC I just get a blank white screen with sound. I have no idea what is happening or how to fix it.

Have you tried using FAR mod? http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SpecialK_Mods/discussions/3/1334600128973500691/
It's the must have mod for PC version because NieR: Automata PC is a bad port, and the mod fixes various graphical issues of N:A.

Also, if you're using Radeon graphic card, update the driver to the latest version.

The Nier PC port was released to the wild and basically completely untouched except for the release of the DLC; the developers don't understand how PC support works and also don't actually care because it's not a market they ever interact with. This means it's riddled with a couple of high-profile bugs: Radeon cards have problems running it; the game doesn't natively run at 1920x1080 or higher and instead upscales from a lower resolution for no reason; high end PCs have trouble running it because it's running an absurd simulation of godrays for no reason; the game can't run borderless windowed; frequent crashes, including before the game unlocks the save system.

FAR mod helps resolve basically most of these issues (except for borderless windowed--you need a different tool for that, and in my experience it barely works), though the dev of FAR mod got a lot of stink because he coded the program to not launch if you were running an illegal copy of Nier, leading to a delightful raging rapids of salty tears from butthurt pirates.

Please play the game with a controller; KBAM has problems because if you wiggle the mouse rapidly back and forth, 2b will stop what she's doing to pet her support POD, which is cute but really unfortunately timed when you're surrounded by enemies.

EDIT: That said, occasionally using the mouse to pet the support POD is the only way you can pet the support POD on PC, so go ahead and do it now and then when you aren't in a life or death situation.

So at 116 hours I've finally finished my 2nd run, got all the endings, and 100% achievements. I've played the game fully in both english and japanese, and honestly, I like both of them. Like, a lot. They're both great, even if they do different things.

If you put a gun to my head, I'd say the english VA is not as good as the Japanese VA, but that's basically nothing to do with the english VA themselves and mostly on how the american VA industry works. I don't know how things run in Japan, but the more I hear about voice actors relating their experiences, the more surprised I am that we get good material out of any of them. They basically never have the full width and breadth of information available about the subject they're performing, and have to rely exclusively on what the director tells or provides to them on the day they walked in.

As a slightly related fun fact, Pure Cinnamon Roll Kyle McCarley (the english voice of 9s) has a twitch, and he semi-regularly plays games that he's performed in, often with friends--who are frequently in the games he's in, too. In case you were wondering, yes, he has completely run through Nier: Automata, and a lot of the videos also feature Pure Cinnamon Roll Kira Buckland (voice of 2b) co-staring in the stream, swapping the controller back and forth.

All these streams are posted to youtube. For example, this late cut:
features a lot of talk about their experience performing the VA for the game interspersed throughout the duration, and also features their pure cinnamon roll reactions to late game plot developments.

The two of them have also gathered friends to give impromptu readings of the translated Nier: Automata Concert Dramatic Readings that originally featured the JA cast in five nights of live Nier concert performances. They include weirdly important and critical story information directly relating to the Nier: Automata universe, because Yoko Taro is an absolute madman.

It's the DVD/blu-ray recording of the Nier (not Auto-mata; just Nier) concert from April of last year. So not new stuff, but still neat.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ENDING E.

So...for the credits sequence. Is it entirely possible to use up everyone's data or do you never actually run out? I mean, can you end up singlehandedly delete everyone's save files during your credits sequence?

No, the extra ships getting blowed up and taking people's data along with it is a cheat to enhance the moment. The data that matters the most (to the extent that anyone's 'matters' beyond the symbolic gesture of deleting it in the first place) is that of the person you receive the personal message from right as the other ships come in.

Oh boo, and here I was thinking one could ruin the moment for everyone by constantly suiciding in the credits sequence.

I have returned from the fate worse than ending E with poetry.

I cry. I cry. I cry. I cry.
Life is suffering, loss and meaning.
I cry. I cry. I cry. I cry.
We stretch to forever.
I cry. I cry. I cry. I cry.
They're all gone.
I cry. I cry. I cry.
Destruction is the only thing left.
I cry. I cry. I cry. I cry.
The world ends with us, the world ends now. I cry. I cry I cry. I scream.

For so long.
We have been fighting.
For so long we have wept.
To keep them safe.
To keep them going.
NO MORE.
IT IS ALL GONE. IT IS ALL DESTROYED.
KAINE. WHY?!?

I'm so glad....
to remember.
Nier....Kaine....
I'm coming....
