NieR Automata

LP used to consistently be behind a paywall when Danganronpa was getting played for the first time. It caused a big influx of new viewers so Lowtax walled it off to get their juicy :tenbux:

It seems that 2B killed 9S at least 6 times before the prologue. Whenever 9S discovered 2B's true designation or just accessed classified data, Pod 153 backstabbed him by notifying the Bunker, which in turn issued a kill-order.

Pod 153 is extremely cold and logical. Makes sense, since Pod 042 did say that they were just supposed to carry out the YoRHa Project and weren't meant to develop emotions. Each time 2B breaks down, Pod 153 only reminds her to wipe out 9S' memories.

Also, it's confirmed that after a few deaths, 9S knew everything in every life but couldn't bring himself to retaliate since he was aware of how much 2B suffered.

As a solution for the issue of declining morale, an Android called Zinnia decided to create a "god", in other words the Council of Humanity. Zinnia created at least 21 prototypes, among them are Number 2 and Number 9.

Eventually, Number 9 found out Zinnia's plan. The original YoRHa Project was only meant to create a fake Council of Humanity, but it's actually Number 9 who decided to implement a backdoor so that the Bunker would be destroyed and no one would discover the truth.

So yeah, turns out that the "original" 9S was the mastermind all along.

What the fuck, Yoko Taro.

A2 wasn't meant to be a particularly strong combat model. In fact, she was the weakest in her squad, but the most considerate. Years and years of combat honed her combat skill. A2 wanted to die, but all her teammates and her lover sacrificed themselves so that she could survive, so she just slaughtered Machines day after day, hoping that she would eventually "win".

The battle in the Forest Kingdom wasn't the first time A2 met 2B and 9S. 2B, as 2E, was sent to terminate her for "leaking classified data", which as we know is total bullshit. A2 finds it horrifying and ridicolous that they sent someone with an identical face to kill her for crimes she didn't commit. A2 starts viewing everything as an enemy after that: Machines, Androids and YoRHa.

A2 fights against 9S. 9S hacks her and mocks her, before she retaliates and reveals that she has already fought him 4 times before, hence gaining valuable experience against Scanner models. She developed a powerful defense system, which might explain why her hacking minigame is harder aside from "It's the final boss". 9S, obviously, doesn't remember this. A2 crushed 9S, as she did every single time, and hopes that they never hvae to meet each other again.

After fighting A2 in the Forest Kingdom, 9S and 2B feel an unexplicable sense of guilt. A2 thinks that their expressions is akin to that of someone meeting an old friend.

It's confirmed in some side material that at one point, 9S betrayed and attacked 2B in some desert ruins after he found out she was there to kill him if he ever found something out, and tried to preemptively kill her first. 2B naturally took him down in short order, but IIRC it was at that point where she decided to "kill God" (the lines about being trapped in a cycle from the opening).

Also, 9S didn't seem to know everything every life. Just the 2B/2E thing, though there were definitely echos of the rest of the secrets (things nagging him about how certain things were "off", calling the Council of Humanity "stiff"). He didn't really know until the Commander gave him the data that Humanity was long dead/that the Council of Humanity was fake.

Um. Where are you getting this from? I'd like to read it.

So... during the start of Route C who looked up?

Also I heard from someone that back in the route A/B there were dozens of flight units engaging the Engels. Haven't verified myself yet.

This exchange between Pod 042 and Pod 153 after Ending E is hilarious and cute at the same time.

Pod042 to Pod153:
Inquiry: Explain your current action.

Pod153 to Pod042:
Reply: I am fishing.
Proposal: Refrain from verbal conversation.
Reason: Fish will swim away.

Pod042 to Pod153:
Negative: Visual confirmation of you currently fishing is not the issue.
Inquiry: State the purpose of discarding fish after fish on the ground.
Conjecture: It is a waste of energy and resources.

Pod153 to Pod042:
Report: Fishing will continue until the objective that I have just set has been achieved. Therefore, this action is not useless.
Hope: The mutual understanding of these feelings.

Pod042 to Pod153:
Proposal: Considering the disclosure of the objective. Depending on this, mutual understanding of these feelings may be possible.

Pod153 to Pod042:
Report: The extermination of all "aji" from the face of the Earth.
(aji = horse mackerel)

Pod042 to Pod153:
Inquiry: …………aji?

Pod153 to Pod042:
Affirmation: That is correct. If I continue to fish and fish and fish for Aji, at some point, the extermination of the aji species is not impossible.

Pod042 to Pod153:
Inquiry: …………Why aji?

Pod153 to Pod042:
When an android consumes this fish, it causes excessive toxicity damage and enduces death. When I performed the hypothetical simulation "9S consumed an aji", I detected a malfunction in my internal algorithm. Therefore, I decided to continue fishing until the risk of 9S consuming an aji has been reduced to 0.00001%.

Pod042 to Pod153:
Conjecture: That… behavior is called "overprotection".

Pod153 to Pod042:
I don't care what you call it. I will exterminate all aji. The reconstruction of 9S…… as well as 2B and A2 is rapidly approaching. I want to accomplish this mission before that time comes. The extinction of aji. Additionally, I request your silence. I am not able to catch any fish at all.

Pod042 to Pod153:
Proposal: In that case, then I, too…… If I proceed to fish with you, I predict that your objective will be accomplished in half the time.

Pod153 to Pod042:
……Thank you.

Pod042 to Pod153:
Thanks are not necessary. At any rate…… the time will soon be upon us.

Yes, very soon…… We must practice.

It's not a Yoko Taro game without some form of concerted effort at genocide.

So dishwasher1910 on DeviantArt made something interesting...

Automata-flavor team RWBY. Looks like Yang upgraded her gauntlets a wee bit. :D
It looks downright awful, to be honest. The backlighting gives the picture a bad case of 'can't see shit, cap't' and the designs for the weapons are terrible. I mean, I see what artist was going for, but it simply doesn't work.

So, playing through the game again (I want a character that can just jump right into the DLC, and since I happened to lose all my save files...), and I reached the Desert Housing.

This time, when I faced Adam, I switched 9S to passive mode, and I engaged Adam in honorable fisticuffs.

(Well, not really, since Bare Fists do involve some degree of kicking, but still. He tried to kick me too.)

Weird machine-android thing wants to get in a punching match with me, 2B's game with that.

Not sure if I'll do it for the for the other fights with them, but this time, I fought him on his own level.

Nothing happened storywise, obviously, but I did get amused by him going, "Sword. Dodge," when swords had been involved at no point in our fight prior to this.

Yoko Taro answered 50 fan questions in the Nier Automata Strategy Guide.
Nier Automata Strategy Guide: 50 Questions for Yoko Taro

Some really illuminating stuff, it sheds a bunch of new info. Some neat snippets (though I recommend reading the whole thing), WARNING massive spoilers:
Q6. The timing of the machine lifeforms' attack on the bunker via the backdoor just seems too perfect. Are the androids and machine lifeforms in cahoots with each other?

This has been shown in the stage play YoRHa, but the machine lifeforms have always been coming through the backdoor (not sure if its a bad translation here). However, the androids and machine lifeforms are not in cahoots with each other. There were mainly two reasons the virus spread through the bunker so quickly. One, since YoRHa launched an all out attack on the machines lifeforms, they were deemed a threat, and two, the red girls just felt like it.

Q7. What is this "Command" organization that came up with project YoRHa?

Since humanity's forces consist of all the androids who report to the Council of Humanity on the moon, the so called Command is just the Council of Humanity. However, as revealed in the game, the Council of Humanity does not actually exist, and neither does the Command (the closest thing would be the server on the moon). The one who came up with project YoRHa is an individual android, but we have not revealed the details yet. (It has been revealed recently from the concert spoilers)

Q9. Approximately how many YoRHa members are there? Do they have bases other than the bunker?
There are around 100~200 YoRHa members. There are 13 orbital bases, but the bunker is the only YoRHa base.

Q15. How much does it cost to produce a YoRHa type android?
A lot. The value of money has changed too drastically in the Nier world to compare to our current standards, but one YoRHa unit has about the same value as one state-of-the-art fighter jet in our world. The flight units are even more expensive, and cost about ten times that of a regular YoRHa unit.

Q19. So permission to use flight units is rarely granted, but how many flight units are stored in the bunker?
16 of them. In the beginning of route C, you see more than 16 flight units in the all out attack, but that's because they include units from orbital bases other than the bunker.

Q20. Does every YoRHa unit have their own rooms? How many rooms are there in the bunker?
The bunker has around 100 rooms. In general, each unit has their own room, but sometimes units share connected rooms.

Q28. Why did the machine lifeforms have top secret information regarding project YoRHa?
Because the machine lifeforms accessed the bunker and council of humanity through the backdoor. Furthermore, leaking this kind of information to the machine lifeforms has always been part of project YoRHa's plan.

Q38. Does the demonic element (maso) exist in this world as well? How is it used in battle?
There's not a lot of demonic element going around, but it does exist (for example, Emil's attacks). Also, the YoRHa units' skills utilize the demonic element.

Q45. Are there any androids above YoRHa in the chain of command who're responsible for calling the shots in the war against the machine lifeforms?
There aren't any. YoRHA, resistance members, other androids from the orbital bases, as well as the androids fighting in the kingdom of night* are all equal below the council of humanity.
*This is the region of the earth that's permanently night, which includes North and South America.

The new ending from the dlc was pretty nice. Best outfit from the dlc :D

It seems the machine network got in through the backdoor pretty early into YoRHa's life, and they seem to be much more immature than the Terminals we encounter in The Tower. It's interesting that 9S was able to detect them somewhat; I guess that explains why we can see projections of the Red Girls in playthrough B.
Best part:
"Is there something else?"

"Yes," the operators answer in unison.

"Commander! Please accept this!"

All at once, they present her with small gold and silver packages.

"What are these?"

"Today is February 14th! That date is also known as Valentine's Day, which is a day where you give brown objects to those you adore!"
More 6O is love. Also 21O too.

Not sure about dozens but
when I killed the Engels on foot, I got a call from Yorha members who had been fighting them inf light units thanking me for saving them, and also commenting on how amazing it is that I was able to kill them both like that without the flight unit. Oh this this was also before the intended fight against the first engels as well.

Whoops, won't post anymore links to novellas and short stories.

Someone made a short, translated summary of a casual livestream Taro & the dev's did. Its not published or anything so there shouldn't be any copyright issues. It adds some new details but confirms a lot of the stuff the player suspected playing the game.

Notes from the Live Broadcast at STORIA | Fire Sanctuary

Story relevant parts:
Q: about the numbers for Pod

A: 042 Yoko had to look at his notes: They are numbers from an old world

153: From the Bible John 21:11.

Q: Why do the YoRHa androids and Operators have visors covering their eyes and mouths, respectively?

A: The visors over the eyes is to represent the characters cannot see reality whereas the Operators cannot speak about reality.

Each of the emblems also represent this. The Resistance, with the emblem of an open eye, means that they understand the reality that surrounds them. On the other hand, YoRHa are ignorant to the fact of reality.

What is the meaning behind the Bunker being in only Black and White? It's because that is the World of Death, and all of them will soon be dead…

The Commander is only viewed in monotone colors, even though her character illustration depicts her as having a long, white dress and long blonde hair. She is never shown in her true colors since she is only viewed on the Bunker.

Q: What is the meaning behind A2 cutting her hair?
A: She cuts her hair due to a certain ritual, out of respect for the dead.

Androids are able to grow their hair.

S models aren't made for battle, so they tend to die more often.

Q: Who made YoRHa Project?
A: HE WON'T SAY… but it may have further repercussions later on.
There is no connection between YoRHa and Yonah.

The "Fire of Prometheus" is the first story that leads into Automata

6O died with the Bunker

21O, although she is an Operator, is also capable of utilizing a battle type

Accord is still a SECRET

NOT RELATED: Doves at the end of Automata connect to DOD3?

NOT RELATED: Lunar Tears & the Flower in Zero's eye

The reason why buildings and other remnants of human civilization still exist in such pristine condition is because the machines keep reconstructing everything when it's destroyed. It's an eternal cycle of destruction and recreation, over and over and over again.
Does Adam love Eve? They view themselves as the same.

Emil recreated Kaine's house, that's why it's underground aka a different location than before.

He's not the original Emil anyway… but when the Original was still around, he created it.

The orignal Emil is STILL ALIVE!!!!

9S knows that he's got missing memories… and that something is missing every time he's re-started…

About the DLC, Damn the Gamblers Colosseum gets dark.
I was just expecting some dumb arenas not a chattel fight ring aka robot slave death pit. Those dialogues during the fights make you feel bad.

Really shows a darker side to the Resistance.

Also does anybody else feel that they really missed an opportunity to have a YorHa/android combat arena? Those were the most interesting fights in the main game... (especially the last one with pods). Not to forget, status ailments, which were criminally neglected in the main game as well - all of those meaningless "Cure Status" items that just went to waste.
