NieR Automata

I thought 'glorified house sitters' are precisely what they are originally? Popola and Devola are 'Observation' unit with haxx biological knowhow and expertise to be able to clone people.

Yeah, I'm thinking that Popola and Devola just got their jobs because the remaining humans figured out that they couldn't put their souls in them. They had the androids just lying around, not doing anything, so they just repurposed them into soul babysitters. Otherwise there's really no reason to bother making androids. If you just want someone to take care of your planet for you and pull the lever that makes your souls go into your new body, it doesn't have to look like a hot redhead.

I guess the androids' creators have the same thought as Yoko Taro. They just like girls.

"So we have these twin android blueprints for cloning and observation of the Replicants. Any thoughts on their model design?"

"Let's put them as redheads. No one can say no to two pretty redheads (who are twins!) taking care of them :ogles:"

":eyeroll: Let's put them in maid outfit as well, why not."

"Let's do that, yes!"

Let's not resort to shorthand slurs.

A great interview with Yoko Taro:

Edit:

Yoko Taro's screen: "Some members of the French media are here to interview me today, so I'm writing random bullshit for this shot."

Wow, you are too a moron. Now I see where that retarded shipping came from.

Proposal: stop drinking from the well of distilled retardation. And no, you don't get to answer 'interpretations' when you were having delibrate misconceptions of the character in the first fucking place.

You're acting like a child. I honestly expected far better from you of all people.

Honestly, most of the instances of English 2B showing more snarkiness than in the Japanese version kind of make sense as far as localizations go, from what I've heard of the differences.

In English, she's clearly experiencing emotions when she talks about the new Engels, she's just using things like "Oh great" to obscure the actual emotions involved (we're fucked).

I mean, she already has plenty of slip ups when it comes to hiding her emotions, it's not like she really needed more, and that allows for at least a few more moments for her to look like she's actually making an effort to hide her emotions. She's trying, but she slips up from time to time.

And, honestly, I like snarky teenager/Caim's favored 9S plenty, and I really don't think I would have been as attached to him if I was listening to the Japanese dub. (I tend to not like overeager kid characters.)

Besides, that sort of resignation and the fact that he keeps on quietly pushing the boundaries with his radio calls does have some pleasantly disturbing implications when the players start to wonder just how much of his situation he actually understood (and for how long).

Stop: STOP
I don't know why the fuck am I wasting my time on this debate other than actually doing my Economics study, but fuck it.

stop While someone misinterpreting a character or scene you like can be annoying, it is not an excuse to fly off the handle. 25 points and calm down.

Name a single redeeming quality about 9S that isn't his luscious dicksucking lips.
just no @Fell, calm down and don't make comments like this.

So I've been watching someone LP the Japanese version of the game (they played it before it was out over here) and on the dub vs sub debate, if the Japanese voices are the way it was meant to be experienced why are the English voices the default even in that version? But I guess the Japanese voices still go first in the credits IIRC so I dunno.

Edit: Oh yeah and some of the names change even in the Dub, like Jean Paul and the Carnival boss, anyone know what that's about?

I wouldn't read into what the default settings are or the order of the credits. I wouldn't even read into the fact that all the trailers were initially produced in Japanese and then only later dubbed as it began to be localised by a third party in the US.

What I would read into is the fact that Taro wrote the script, wrote it in Japanese and doesn't speak much English :V

Just finished endings C and D. Still hate 9S.

Fuck him, I'm glad he's dead. I almost don't want to complete ending E now because then he'll get to live. But I'll do it, for 2B and A2's sake. May god have mercy on my soul."

FIGHT THE CREDIT ROLL. FIGHT THE FUTURE.

FUCK THE PROJECT. FUCK THE CODE.

This ending would have so much more impact and be so much nicer if this was the first time I ever saw the little hacking shoot em up mechanic instead fo having seen it a thousand fucking times.

It's okay, I forgive you.

What, you'd prefer to be dumped into an unfamiliar gameplay type in the very last minutes of the very last ending with no time to grow accustomed to it and lose all sense of buildup for the hacking element?

An in-between would have been nice. All the parts with 9S are just a pain to play through, especially after you've had GLORIOUS PLATINUM MELEE before. The scenaristic hacks are nice and all, but given you're pretty much forced to hack everything if you don't want a one button game is annoying very fast.

YOU ARE ALL MY GREATEST FRIENDS. I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR ME, RANDOM JAPANESE PEOPLE AND ONE GUY NAMED GREG!

Sir I'm playing a Yoko Taro game, that is exactly what I want.

The hacking gameplay never bothered me. The transitions could've been slightly tuned up but on the whole it was pretty painless to switch back and forth. My only trouble was aiming, which might've been something up with my gamepad or something, I dunno, I made it through all the same.

It's not like the regular combat's all that orgasm-inducing if we're being completely honest. By Platinum standards it's as boring as it gets - lock on, hold down the shoot button, spam Light Attack and Heavy Attack to get the dual-wield combo, and occasionally dodge for either a launcher that fails to fucking launch anyone it would be useful to launch or an AoE counterattack that's slow as hell with no hitstun or super armour so it's far too easy to get hit out of it. Actually I vastly preferred playing as 9S precisely because his counterattack is so much stronger and more useful than Toobie's.

And then if you put even the slightest bit of effort into fusing and setting plug-in chips it snaps completely and you become an unkillable god of death.

I think the reason why I hate 9S so much is pretty much down to the fact that if he weren't in it, Nier Automata would be perfect.

It would be a perfect experience, with no flaws I can think of. It's still great, it's an amazing game, but it's not flawless. It could have been perfect, but 9S drags it down from a 10/10 to like an 8. If you just CUT him from the game, and I never had to play as him, it would have been my game of the year. Possibly the decade.

I'm angry that the perfect experience I could have had was stolen from me, by 9S.

Oh and there's the fact that he dies unredeemed, still as big a shitbag as he'd been for the last ten hours. He didn't change at all. He just got worse and worse until he died. Now he's going to be brought back to life, even though he clearly doesn't deserve it.

Yeah. I know. 9S is in the game more than basically any other character; the game is practically about him.

It would still have been better without him. I would have liked it more if the main character was 2B
and 9S died at the beginning of route C.
Everything 9S does would have been more dramatic and more enjoyable if it was done by 2B.

Except 2B is a mature woman that overall seems to have made peace with her job and 9S is a shota/young teenager whose story evokes themes of the pain and loss of growing up and being forced to find your own way in life as a self-determining individual and the role others play in that kind of traumatic change.

Yeah. I know. 2B having all that stuff would have been more interesting. Even imagining her doing the exact same things and performing the same way, she is better for that then 9S is.

If you hate 9S enough that you'd rather he swap places with 2B and thus ruin her character and the entire structure of the story then I dunno what to say lol

Say that 9S sucks and they never bothered to even try to make him likable. Because that's the case.

Seriously, the game just ENDS right where his redemption arc should logically begin. After the tower is when he should start to do some real soul searching and figure out what he wants to do with himself, but instead he just
Dies, and then I'm supposed to be happy that he gets to come back again despite having done nothing to deserve it.

And it wouldn't "Ruin" 2B to have her go through 9S's arc. She's just the kind of character who would still be fun and likable as she went through it. 2B's story is also prematurely aborted; she too
Dies just before she should have started to change.

Maybe, rather than saying one character ruined the game, the dilution of plotlines since it has to be shared between 2 and a half character (given how little 2A is developped) might play against the game.

9S' descent into madness and general bad things was well done, but given the first part is mostly about 2B, you're like, ok dude, that's cool. And his madness and hate and I-ve-lost-everyone-I-ever-loved could very well have been done with 2B, given it happens just after the bunker is destroyed.

So yeah, with the dilution, I feel like what should have been strong moments have been changed into "meh, ok, I guess". Like 21O. I mean, I was crying tears of blood with "Thanks for the flowers" but with her, I was so nonplussed that I killed her before she could launch a single attack (maybe it was the fact that at this point so much shit had gone on that it was hard to have more).

Also, maybe 2A and 2B would have made for a better last fight, like Dante and Vergil in DmC3, since they're basically reflection of the same character on different levels of fucked-up-ness. Also, given the last arc is a descent for everyone but 2A, it would have made an interesting switching of place, since 2A basically is insane murder rage 2B.

So yeah, either make us care more about Nines in the first parts or replace him. Well, given this thread, apparently some people cared about him a lot at this point, granted.

Ah, also, last point, but the fact that you play 2B in the bunker makes it that her death doesn't look like the culmination of Yoko's wild ride (tm) but just another bad thing on the side (even more given the fact that gameplay wise, you're given a character that plays mostly the same so you don't really feel a sense of loss as a player).

Dude A2 got more development than anyone in this game except maybe Devola and Popola. And Pascal. And Engels. And Grun. And the singing beautiful machine.

...Actually EVERYONE develops more than our supposed main characters.

Something to do with copyright iirc. The dub basically tried to get as close as possible without violating copyright. F.ex Jean-Paul in the original version is named Satre, after French philosopher... Jean-Paul Satre. Can't really fault the localization on that front.
