NieR Automata

I know it's not a choice made in a vacuum. I know that localisation choices aren't being made to ruin things, but regardless of why it's done the resulting changes are inferior. They change the characters in ways that I think aren't very good. Your description of '9S basically going "fine mom"' is actualyl a great example, because that's not what the character was originally written as.

You like what he was changed to and that's fine. Art is all about the personal relationship a person has with the work. But for me I like there to be as few possible obstacles between me and the original creator as possible. I don't want to be interpreting the interpretation of some American localisation team, I want to be interpreting Taro Yoko.

She sounds sarcastically annoyed. The character is pretty different in English, on top of Buckland's flat performance. It's clear that they took 2B's cool professionalism as being suited for some deadpan vehicle for snark and I think that's an inferior change as well.

I'm sorry dude, I can't pretend to like it.

It's a speedy action combo based action game so for me personally I can't even imagine how it would be played with a mouse and keyboard. But apparently Metal Gear Rising worked pretty well in m+kb, so maybe this would be okay? It's still hard for me to envision. If you're planning to play on PC but you also have a controller you can test them both out.

Credit where credit is due, Tara Platt really gives it her all. She clearly worked really hard on playing Zero ... but it wasn't the same Zero that Taro wrote. Also she was up against Uchida Maaya, who has an incredible power level (but also an incompetent manager who can't seem to consistently get her work that suits her talent).
I actually liked Cindy Robinson the most out of the English cast, felt she did a decent Mikhail.
Murder Mitsuru! Guro porn Yosuke! And was Cent Akihiko? He sounded like him to me.
Drakengard! 3!
Yeah Cent was Liam O'Brien.

Yeah Cent was Liam O'Brien.
I only saw DarkId's screenshot LP of 3 so I have no idea how he did as Cent but O'Brien was the shit as Weiss.

Fuck you man I like that song unironically.

And uh, for Cent, just imagine douchey Gaara in terms of voice, I guess.

I'm now most of the way through route C and all I can think of is how I hate 9S with the fury of a thousand suns.

Nothing would bring me greater pleasure at this moment than to watch him die in despair with no hope of ever returning, his last moments filled with unbearable misery. This is a Yoko Taro game though, so he's the only person who'll survive.

It's okay Fell, the first step to overcoming shit taste is admitting you have a problem.

The fact that nothing - nothing's his fault?

By the time I learned that
He wasn't responsible for the bunker getting destroyed
I had already grown to hate him so much that it felt like a cheap cop out. But that honestly doesn't matter, because my problem with 9S is not what he does, it's what he is. I hate him because he is like a 9S, which is a thing I hate. To not be hated by me, he would have to be a different character.

It doesn't help that he's basically ruined my experience with Nier's shooting, which until route B I had enjoyed very much, because his stupid hacking minigame is just a version of that excellent shooting system which has been dumbed down and made worse in every possible way, then repeated a thousand times. He taints the very gameplay; and whenever I'm controlling him, all I can think about is how much I'd rather be playing as the other character.

The only enjoyment I have derived from 9S was
laughing at how fucking stupid he sounds when he's screaming and running across a bridge.

While I'm at it, route b in general is completely pointless and I don't know why it exists. Everything that we learn in route B could have been communicated in a five minute visual novel over still jpegs before transitioning immediately to route C.

Insightful :V

I honestly thought for most of route C that Yorha getting infected with the logic virus was entirely 9S's fault because in his stupid, selfish act of hacking into machine life forms from the Bunker he had accidentally left a back door open to malicious machine back-hacking that resulted in all of his friends getting killed because he couldn't handle his waifu temporarily dying.

So, when I found the data indicating that the evil conspiracy whatevers intended this to happen I just rolled my eyes at what appeared to me as a blatant attempt to turn 9S into some kind of tragic martyr caught up in events outside his control.

As for the "Insightful" comment; I don't know what else you want. I dislike 9S. I don't like his personality. He grates on me, rubs me the wrong way, I do not enjoy his presence. I disliked him from the moment I first saw him in the demo. He comes across as a whiny, cocksure little shit basically all the time. He's overly familiar with a superior officer despite her obvious disinterest in him. He's irrationally hateful towards machines he has no reason to suspect mean him harm, even when 2B, a fellow Yorha soldier, clearly doesn't see anything wrong with associating with them. His character arc, if you can call it that, is a descent from being a little shit to being a total pain in the ass with an eye rolling revenge boner over a woman that to the best of his knowledge he has known for about a day and a half. He exists purely as a foil to 2B to give her something to care about, and he hasn't earned even that much. He disgusts me, as a person. I dislike him because he is detestable.

Oh, and he's also the source of the biggest plot hole in the whole game. Where after route A he's supposedly uploaded his memories into surrounding machine life forms and is basically acting as a hive mind for machines... and then suddenly he just isn't, and he's back in his body on the bunker and nothing has changed for SOME fucking reason. This has gone completely unexplained so far and I don't hold out hope that they're going to bother.

What? Helping 2B was an order from the Commander, and the Bunker's hacking system was installed for the use of various androids. Why would that be any of his fault? And no, that plot twist wasn't 'blatant' or author pandering at any level, it has a clear and solid connection with the rest of the themes of the game.

You are just upset that the game isn't pandering to your tastes.

Holy fucking shit, you and half of the internet cannot be this dumb. How many times does it need to be hammered into your skulls that no, 9S isn't motivated by 'muh 2B', its by the combination of losing his friends, crush, the organisation he has so wholeheartedly served for years, his beliefs being proven false on every level, and finally, losing the very fucking purpose of his entire life? Not to mention the cherry on the icing of the Terminals fucking with him on every single level?

Yeah she told 9S to help 2B, she didn't tell him "Hey go open up our highly classified servers and fuck around in there while leaving an open connection to all the crazy Machine lifeforms who would love a chance to give us robot syphilis."

You are just upset that the game isn't pandering to your tastes.

What tastes, exactly, do you think I want pandering for?

He is literally screaming "MUH TOOBIE" all the fucking time. What other interpretation am I supposed to have? And all that is nice, but you see, none of it matters because it's happening to a character I don't like.

You can give him the most tragic, best written motivation ever, but it doesn't matter if I don't care about him because he's a shit. Your first task, before you do any of that, is to make sure that your character isn't a shitty person who the audience hates. That was a failure here.

Fell speaks the truth.

And one ending will have you laughing.

I already had a sensible chuckle at the one where at the start of route B you can have 9S just fuck off to go play tiddlywinks in the woods if you want rather than continue the game.

I was less amused when it turned out I had to play through the stupid oil-carrying segment again before I got to relish the oh so joyful experience of playing the entire story again as 9S.

Making the player painstakingly waddle a bucket over to a dead robot, fruitlessly trying to revive him when you know there's no chance of success is pretty poignant... doing it the second time immediately after the first, not so much.

You took a wrong turn too?

No, I was speaking about an actual ending. Ending D I think.

Well neat I guess. I'll probably see it before Persona 5 comes out and monopolizes my life; depending on how much time I have to grind my teeth through playing as 9S.

Violation of Rule 3 - This Is Not Civil
I don't know why the fuck am I wasting my time on this debate other than actually doing my Economics study, but fuck it.

Fell speaks the truth.
Wow, you are too a moron. Now I see where that retarded shipping came from.

Proposal: stop drinking from the well of distilled retardation. And no, you don't get to answer 'interpretations' when you were having delibrate misconceptions of the character in the first fucking place.

What tastes, exactly, do you think I want pandering for?
You clearly hated 9S from the start, so you have literally ignored any positive aspect of his character to make this stupid rant. Why do I say this? Because, in THE FUCKING MAIN QUESTLINE, the game answers every single fucking misconception you have spewed onto this thread.

Yeah she told 9S to help 2B, she didn't tell him "Hey go open up our highly classified servers and fuck around in there while leaving an open connection to all the crazy Machine lifeforms who would love a chance to give us robot syphilis."
Not you fucking dolt, 9S did not open the servers, it was the androids who designed YoRHa who put the fucking backdoor in the first place!

He is literally screaming "MUH TOOBIE" all the fucking time.
No, he fucking isn't.

Read his fucking interactions on throughout the game. His last speech towards A2 is about the pointlessness of YoRHa, and the fact that he is upset that how he and his comrades were used as sacrifical lambs for a pointless cause. Look at the end of Route B, and how he reacts to the Commander telling him the truth about humanity. In case your lazy ass can't be bothered to read, he's more than visbly shaken, and the only reason why he never speaks about it is because he had to get back to his mission. Fuck, look at his interactions in Route A with the machines. He's been hating the machines his whole life, thanks to the conditioning he has gotten as a soldier, so hence he's in denial whenever the machines demonstrate human-like behavior. To sum it all up, he is going down the crazy road not because of 'muh toobs', its the rampage of a man that has absolutey fucking lost it all.

The only time he ever goes into 'muh waifu' mode is whenever A2 pops out at him, and given that A2 never bothered to explain why she killed 2B out of mercy, and the fact that 9S was more than capable of curing the Logic Virus, its a extremely sound justification for revenge.

What other interpretation am I supposed to have? And all that is nice, but you see, none of it matters because it's happening to a character I don't like.
The fact is, you are wrong about a certain character, and its not my fucking job, nor the game, nor anyone else, to have to explain to you every single detail of the story just because YOU IGNORED IT ON PURPOSE.

Personally, I don't really like 9S that much but I can appreciate his character even if I dislike it which is why I put him above A2 (who I mostly appreciate has a playstyle that's way better than 9S')

So far it hasn't. Maybe it will, I'm willing to consider that it might pull something miraculous off in what's left of routes C and D.

Yeah, I know. This was not clear until I picked up the black box file which stated as much. That's what I dislike about it; there is no indication that it was anything but 9S's fault until that point, and the only indication of this is a fucking text log in a box in a giant floating dildo locked behind yet another boring as fuck computer shooter.

No, he fucking isn't. He clearly is on his self-destructive path because he ha

Are you well? Do you have brain damage?

Funny because none of that other shit had him charging down a bridge screaming like a spastic. He only does that when 2B dies.

Anyway. I haven't heard any such speech to A2, because I haven't gotten that far. I'll keep a look out for it, but you know, I doubt it's going to do much to shake my opinion that 9S is a turd, and a millstone around this otherwise excellent game's neck.

The only time he ever goes into 'muh waifu' mode is whenever A2 pops out at him, and given that A2 never bothered to explain why she killed 2B out of mercy, and the fact that 9S was more than capable of curing the Logic Virus, its a extremely sound justification for revenge.

Yeah but he's like a 9 year old threatening a navy seal, it doesn't come across as dramatic or interesting, it's just amusing at best and annoying at worst. It doesn't help that A2 is just a way, way better character than 9S is.

Why are you so mad?
