NieR Automata

Watched the first episode of the anime. Very, very close to the opening assault from both 2B's and 9S's POVs. But I was quite charmed by the real-life dolls that they had at the end. I am quite, quite certain that 'charmed' is not a word that will properly describe the later episodes, though.

In episode two, things change more from the game. The first part is still a recreation of the first few scenes on the Bunker with Commander White, but after that, it starts hitting that Yoko Taro stuff hard.

A damaged machine life form reboots after a battle and discovers the joys of gardening. It slowly starts to cover the city with flowers, assisted by some smaller robots that help up. Then Anemone/Lily's resistance group get chased by a group of hostile machine life forms through the flower field, to be rescued by 2B and 9S. All of the gardeners get destroyed in the crossfire and the flowers burn. Also, Devola and Popula are introduced with magical abilities.

That's Yoko for you!

I didn't notice this while watching: someone in another forum speculates that the events in episode 2 is not in chronological order.
That 9S and 2B saving the Resistance members at the end of the episode does not happen in the "present", but rather happened before episode 1, with 2B and an earlier 9S. The clues are the Resistance saying the Council of Humanity never sent reinforcement and a member saying he never seen a YoHRa android before, despite earlier in the episode 9S mentioning YoHRa have android dedicated to liaising with the Resistance.

God damn, that was savage, 2B. Just absolutely ice cold. Also, surprised that A2's hair could grow. Seems like the sort of thing that you'd need to visit a workshop to change.

Probably a feature invented for the Devola and Popola models so the replicants wouldn't notice anything amiss, and adopted by other androids when they started Von Neumanning

It's very interesting seeing all the differences so far, and that it seems to lead back to Emil going dormant and Lily surviving instead of Anemone in the Pacific Assault from the stageplay.

There's a pretty stark whiplash between the first half and the second half. First half is a fairly cute slice of life, though 2B isn't exactly subtle about warning 9S to stop asking questions that Command doesn't want answered. And a very cute moment where 2B splashes around in the sea with 9S and sends a flower photo to 6O, along with a promise to hang out with her if 6O ever makes it to the surface. And completely shuts down Jackass's bikini-based flirting.

Then the second half is more of a horror show. First 9S hacks into the Bunker to see a fragment of a conversation between Commander White and the Council before they realize that someone's watching. Then it gets worse with 9S being lured inside a building by either A2 or Adam and finding a gallery of fanart of him and 2B, including one painting of them done moments ago. Then he gets captured by some weird spatial distortion thing.

Really ramping up to the finale here.

Is the anime worth it, story-wise? I remember watching the start of episode 1 and it looked worse than a ps2 game so I switched off.

It's worth it, unless you want constant action or something? Some people on reddit have called it filler because lol what is storytelling without huge events each episode. There's a lot of interesting differences from the game that make it an intriguing watch. Although I disagree that it looks worse than a PS2 game in the first place so your milage may vary.

A bit of an exaggeration, but the 3d flying units looked worse than in the game and like... why? They should have access to the actual models and way less limitations on polycount and rendering.

Yeah the flight suits looked bad in the scenes where you can see the pilots. Other than that the animation was fine though.
