At this point we don't even know what we're fighting, so catching them unawares allows us to one pass and haul ass if necessary. I don't think this is going to be a full on Alien Bomber Box straight from 1944 but if it is it's nice to have a plan.

2-2: Let Not One Escape!
Against the fluffy white tops of the cloud, you could see the shadows of your airplanes as ghostly impressions, skimming along the cloudtops. One, two, three, four... and a fifth shadow flicked over in the opposite direction.

You looked up, and there, maybe three hundred meters, moving the over the team, was a dark shape emerging from the cloud. There was still no real systematic recognition system for the Invaders, information was still too thin on the ground, but this wasn't one of their fighters. It had a ring like the planes you'd fought before, but up front on a long cylindrical body, and it looked like it had two sets of full-sized wings and an underside rudder.

Then, from behind it, two light fighter aircraft, the type you'd seen before, trailing in escort formation.

You clicked the radio controls. "Above us! Three marks, two scouts and something else! Directly above!"

Heads craned and the radios crackled as your report was confirmed. It didn't look like they'd spotted you yet, but it was only a matter of time. Lera issued quick orders, but they made you wince.

"Spider flight, climb, up! It's an enemy observer, we must engage and take it down before they see us!" He said. You knew it was the wise thing, but the idea of being caught out of energy at the end of the climb was terrifying. Still, nothing for it.

You cranked the stick back and pushed the throttle to full power, rising quickly behind the enemy. Three hundred meters wasn't far, but the enemy were already pulling away from you. You could catch them on full power, but you'd have to run the engine hard.

"Fall upon them, comrades! Remember Mar del Plata, Nagoya, A Coruña! Don't let it happen here!" Lera barked over the radio. He'd been quiet until now, you hadn't suspected any such thing from him. "Let not one escape!"

To your right, flames leapt from the exhaust of the lead plane as Lera pulled ahead, engine at emergency power. The idiot was going to burn himself out!

"Who are we engaging, Captain?" You asked quickly.

"THE ENEMY!" He cried. The other planes were also pulling ahead. Madmen, all of them.

As I see it, we can exploit the general confusion to hit the (probable) ground attack craft, and maybe score a kill, preventing them from achieving their objective - but it sounds like the rest of the flight will get chewed up. Or we can cover (at least one of) them, try to systematically wipe the hostiles, but maybe run the risk of losing the bomber in the meantime.

Inclined to

[X] Go for the larger plane.

Easy target! I hope...

Let's try out our new Dakka, shall we?

Way I see it, everyone is going to go for the Bigger One. It's the obvious target. If we all jump its tail we're mincemeat and worse, just getting in each other's way and liable to collide.

Another point to consider for this fight is that we only have another 500m to play with before we hit the magic 3km barrier and become bad at everything. We can get up to them but we can't really get dives going on them.

It is weird that it's a flat barrier huh.

A weird thought that might handle things more elegantly is if aircraft lose 1 top speed for every altitude that they are over the limit, flat. That might make it feel slightly less trash than the 10% chunk, even if it doesn't scale with engine power, and it doesn't require more book-keeping.

Thoughts?

Maybe nuclear weapons. We really don't know what this lot can do but if they've got weird exotic propulsion technology then them having unlocked the secrets of the atom is not beyond plausibility.

I feel like from a narrative perspective that's a hell of a lever to pull on only the second mission, but maybe rapid escalation is the name of the game here - if so, I dread to consider what Phase 3 will look like.

Well. It's kinda hard to speculate what they're going to throw at us if we don't know what they want, and so far, it's hard to see what they stand to gain here. That said, the speculative progression I'd expect would be~
- recon birds (fast-movers or high-fliers) to ID critical pinpoint industrial and military targets (in the absence of a solid AD infrastructure, this might already have happened, and gone unnoticed), followed by
- surgical strikes and CAPs, to kill current air forces and any potential to replace them, establishing air dominance, followed by
- profit! and/or intensified bomber activity, preparing the way for ??? (let's not let it get to this stage, aye?)
