this sounds like a good plan to me

Though I, Alypius son of Abascantus must admit a certain worry regarding the vile Dauni Barbaroi, As a Proud Greek I refuse to let them make me cover in fear behind the Wall of our Proud city. Let us not worry about them now that our fellow Ionian are breaking the Chains of Dorians Tyranny, it is finally our time to earn Glory among Greeks once again! To battle my Fellow citizen! Let our fellow Greek see the glorious might of Eritria once again!

On another note, I am curious if it is possible to make an Elite Hoplite troops of maybe 200-300 citizens? Maybe something like having a yearly challenge of duel/battle/physical test to select the absolute best who will have the Honor to be equipped with the absolute best the City can provide and train themselves daily in the art of battle so that they can earn the greatest glory ln the field? I will admit to not being up to date on Ancient Greeks...

Clearly we must make offerings to Apollo and the Muses in thanks for the return of Cetashwayo's inspiration.

Hum, yeah, but I actually meant the opposite of the Sacred Ekradamoi, Heavy hoplite if you will. Immovable wall in battle with greater emphasis on strength and endurance than swiftness.
But I guess it is fine if we already have our elite.

It look very seductive for me, i love heavy infantry and heavy cavalry, but I don't think that we could form it for the moment because our City don't see the interest in this.

Strike and do what? The Dauni would have major trouble taking even one of the smaller Epulian cities with a simple pallisade. We have wooden walls, being replaced by stone walls, and would still have a larger force of fighters than most of those cities. Not to mention he has to ford a river to cross over into Peuketti territory, and said ford is controlled by Canosa.
The Peuketii have like 1,000 men left to properly raise, down from like 3,500 two decades ago.
Taking 500 Peuketii + Harpos south leaves only 500 Peuketii behind. Compare that to the (Edit: 4500+) men available to the Dauni. Even if we subtract a significant force (1000-1500) they will have to keep in the north to screen the other Epulian cities, the Ofanto + 500 Peuketii will not stop Arpus from crossing and invading our lands. Even if he can't breach our walls. He can burn our fields. Undermine our standing with the Peuketii. Lay siege to our city and force us to recall our army.
Keeping back half of our army gives us a much better chances of keeping Arpus north of the Ofanto.

I thought I read the alert wrong the first time. So happy to see this back. It was and still is my favorite quest on the site.

If you'll notice the map on the front page, I have opened up all of Italy from the fog of war. In hindsight, there wasn't much reason to keep the central Italians out of view besides scaring people, because they had relations with the coast and the Greeks knew enough about them.

Well, I'm glad that this quest has been revived.

Looking back, I honesly hope our battle of 3 ships versus 50 go down as mythical Greek battle, that was one hell of a moment.

Yay! I read this quest two weeks ago and loved it to pieces, and I'm so excited to be able to participate!

As for my vote, I'm 100 percent certain that our enemies are going to attack while we're away, so let's take a minimal levy with our 'loyal' vassal, not piss off our sorta vassals, but take our famed war leader along so our 'allies' don't think we're skimping.

It's back! Praise Ceta! \o.o/

I am really, really hoping we get some loot out of this, because our treasury isn't looking too hot right now.

It seems we've returned from Hiates/Hiades.

Fellow citizens, lend me your ears!

I, Alexandros of Philoctetes and aristoi of our beloved city moves to wholeheartedly support the proposal put forth by Kallias!

We shall not treat this as one short victorious war that has been decided by the Gods already, for that is hubris in its highest form!

Just look at what happened during our early wars against the barbaroi of the Peuketii, where the flower of Eretria-Eskhata died due to a belief in arrogant superiority.

We created the Epulian League in the belief that all are equal and have a say in the league, therefore let us respect their wishes and have them protect instead our entire league, for if we force them to go we break what the tenets that led into the creation of our League.

And if King Harpos comes with us, so be it. As long as they know what they're doing and follow the chain of command by our Strategoi there will be less problems for everyone in the army.

So speaks Alexandros, son of Philoctetes.

And what does any of that do for him other than guaranteeing Eretria will march north and stomp his shit in afterward?

If we are to march to a war between Greeks, half-measures of any kind will not do. And if Harpos wishes to prove his loyalty, we should be poor lords if we did not allow him to. All three candidates for strategoi have superb qualifications, and we should be grateful to have count even one of them among the citizens of Eretria Eskhata, but Herodion has served well in military matters before. In such a dire matter, it is only fair to defer to experience and proven capability.

I am displeased that the other Epulians do not wish to join us... but given the disposition of the Dauni, perhaps that is for the best.
