I just realized, we really should buy some non-necromancy spells for Diana to use.

While walking:
[X] Talk to both of them. Sometimes one at a time, sometimes both at once. Occasionally try to have two different conversations at the same time, just to see if we can manage it (we have like, a dozen brains right?)
-[X] Talk about magic. Ask them what kind of spells they know, if they'd be willing or able to teach us anything, if they think we're even capable of magic at all. Ask them where they learned magic, if they enjoy magic, and so on.
-[X] Insist to Diana that we're not actually crazy. We're just capable of holding multiple diverse perspectives at the same time. We're open-minded, in that our mind is open to anybody who wants to join! But that's totally not the same as crazy. They should both take us seriously (include Morlia on this part of the conversation).
[X] Keep our guard up, but don't stress out about it too much, we've already had our random encounter for this trip.
[X] See if we can get some more practice in, this time focusing on physical capabilities. Lag behind, then run far ahead, do some exercise until they catch up, see how high we can jump, etc.

Once there:
[X] Sell the bandits' gear, buy a shield.
-[X] Insist that shoping be done with one or both of the humans, as we're both unused to market prices, and also a scary looking crystal daedra. Reactions may be unpleasant if we're alone.
-[X] Buy some spells for yourself.
--[X] make sure to have both of the girls with you for this, they're both mages, so they would know best where to go.
---[X] don't forget to get some non-necromancy spells for Diana to use.
[X] Make our way over to the church, ask for brother Martin.
-[X] "Hey, you ever wonder who your dad is? I've finally found you... Son."

That's not a bad idea... But I'm concerned about his much money we have, and whether it's actually necessary. She's not a great necromancer in the first place, and she does have the disintegration spell which isn't necromantic.

Still, it's something that might be useful and/or important, so I'll add it in anyways.

I'll also add in the robes thing. There, now everybody is happy!

The disintegration spell, while Awesome, also kills our loot.

this isn't fallout, you can't loot things that have been reduced to ashes.

More votes anyone? Pls?
With the number of people voting for me by name, and the recent addition to my plan that basically addresses the concerns of everybody who didn't vote for me, I think we're pretty much unanimous.

[x] find an abandoned puppy, give it to the young necromancer.
-[x] find salt, give it to our master!

Because butterflies can be funny for us.

[X] "Has anyone painted this view yet?"

Also who was the Dunmer that got sainthood again? I remember he moved to Cyrodil after he got made a Saint.

[X] Say nothing.

CX That line of Dark Brotherhood speech never gets old!

These are the only ones that differ.

It's probably not what you meant when you asked for more votes, but seeing as we have an overwhelming majority...

Edit: tag "active discussion makes the gm happy"

I'm sorry ;.;

Tell that to the Vampires and Skeletons I vaporize.

skeletons drop bonemeal, which is ground bone. the bones being more finely ground doesn't change this.

vampires drop vampire ashes, so that would obviously make their ash piles lootable.

besides, I was mainly talking about how the disintegration spell destroys their weapons/armor.

Somebody just got wrecked. Haha

Though I can't actually recall if broken gear doesn't drop in-game, it makes more sense narritively if they didn't in this quest.

I think they do, but its been awhile since I played TES4. besides, even if they did drop broken weapons in the game, the disintegrate spell Diana has been using has a visual effect of melting what she uses it on. Can't really loot a pile of metal sludge...

Well you could but you'd probably only be able to sell it as a oddly shaped Ingot.

Comments like this raise questions that I want to direct towards @Kyrina ...

Oblivion, unlike skyrim, didn't have smithing. We don't have a smithing skill, only armoror.

Do things like ingots exist for the purposes of this quest? Could we theoretically attempt to learn smithing, or gather materials and commission an item for a skilled smith?

How does armorer relate to smithing anyways? If we're able to work metal to the point of repairing or even improving equipment, would that translate over to us potentially making new stuff?

And for spells, I recall buying the magic directly from a person in oblivion, whereas we'd have to buy or find spell books in skyrim.

Earlier comments in the quest prove that spell books exist, but can we still learn a spell directly from people?

In short, there are a number of differences in game design between skyrim and oblivion, despite all being in the same world. (and the older games too, though I never played those)

How do we consolidate the differences, or do we just go with what's more realistic since quests give more options? And how do skills tie in if so?

For the spells the answer is both, you can find spell tomes that teach you how to cast or you can buy spells from a mage who will teach you personally.
You can learn smithing if you desire, it will go off the armorer skill. You can also hire a skilled smith if you want something specific.
In terms of 'do ignots exist for this quest' then the answer is yes and no. No in the sence of a specific item you require to do smithing, yes in the sence of a lump of metal you can find/make, we are going for more realism there. If you can think of something you want to do that should be possible in real life, then you can probally do it.

Brother Martin
You're probably halfway to Kvatch when you think it wouldn't be the worst idea ever to try talking to the two traumatised people travelling with you. Magic seems the most inoffensive subject for the moment, should at least take their minds of their respective losses.

"Sooooo," you drag out the word as long as you reasonably can. "Do you guys reckon I could learn some magic? You know like that kickass disintegration spell you did earlier Diana."

"E-Er I don't know." Diana says hesitantly. "Don't daedra like you have their own kind of magic?" You have no idea, Order boy isn't the most helpful when it comes to that kind of thing. You haven't tried, maybe you can work on that later. Morlia doesn't bother to respond to that question. You imagine that anything she did say would be fairly scathing about a daedra trying to use or learn human magic.

"Well then what do you guys, you know, like doing with magic? Blasting things? Making shit fly? Hurling cabbages at sufficient... crap that won't translate right, er...." Before you can figure out something else you would probably do for fun with magic Morlia interrupts you.

"Studying." She says seriously. Well she's boring.

"How about you Diana?" You turn to her and she fiddles with the hems of her sleeves.

"I-I like making fires..." she murmurs then she pales. "I-I don't mean in a bad way! I just like creating flames, controlled flames that don't hurt anyone." She insists. That's fine, you can get behind liking fire and everything that can be done with it good or bad. But mostly explosions, controlled explosions that hurl things into other things at sufficient velocity.

You manage to wheedle out of Morlia where she learned magic, turns out she pestered the conjuring tutor at the Kvatch Mages' Guild to teach her when she was a kid. Diana stays out of that conversation. You really hope it wasn't Thomas that taught her all or most of the spells she knows. You decided to lighten the mood a little and make Diana knows you aren't actually crazy, no matter what Morlia may say about it.

"Being capable of holding multiple diverse perspectives isn't a sign of insanity." Diana nods with a glazed expression on her face, she's been doing that for the last couple of denials of insanity you've made. You might not be helping your case with her.

"Morlia knows I have an open mind, right Morlia." You drag her into the conversation whether she likes it or not. "So open in fact that anyone can join it!"

"Fast has yet to prove he's anything other than a mad daedra." Morlia deadpans.

"A mad daedra you should listen to. I have saved your life twice now." You point out. Morlia puts her nose in the air and stalks off ahead like a spoiled princess.

Nothing attacks you on the way to Kvatch, a fact you're quite thankful for and you climb the hill to the city just as the sun begins to set. Even though you know it's a year before the Oblivion Crisis it's a relief to find no fiery gate opened in front of the city. The gates open for Morlia without question and she waves to a couple of the guards. You and Diana trail after her, getting a couple of suspicious looks despite what you've done to make Diana's robes look inoffensive and as un-necromantic as possible.

The city is beautiful, you'd compare the architecture and white stone to that of the Imperial city if it wasn't so warm and homely looking rather than austere and imposing. Morlia certainly feels more relaxed, even cracks out a few genuine smiles for people she passes in the street. Then you see it the spire of the Chapel of Akatosh. Time to prove you aren't just a mad daedra!

You run to the Chapel, throw open the doors dramatically and boom. "I am looking for Brother Martin!" Every head in the Chapel turns to you. That's a lot of heads, you seem to have burst in just as half the city came to pray. Awesome.

A man in robes with dark hair, vaguely aristocratic looks but the kind of ruggedness that can only come of grief or hardship etched onto his face, comes towards you.

"I am brother Martin," he says and he sounds just like Sean Bean. Part of you wants to squee in childish glee but first you have something deadly serious to say.

"Have you ever wondered who your father is?" You ask in your most impressive, booming tones. Your voice echoes round the whole church. Martin looks distinctly unimpressed. "I've finally found you... son." You try to sound as choked up as possible as you speak.

"Fast what in Oblivion are you doing?" Morlia hisses, catching up with you and grabbing your elbow. "You can't just charge into the Chapel of Akatosh and be crazy at one of the priests. I'm so sorry brother...?" Morlia apologises quickly. Well it seems Martin is a new additions here... or Morlia doesn't pay much attention to religion.

"Brother Martin." Martin answers. "Is this your daedra?" Morlia's jaw drops.

"Gneeee," the sound escapes between her tightly compressed lips and she drags you out of the Chapel and into the street where Diana is waiting. "AkatoshnowhyisitrightwhatdidIdowrongwhyisthishappeningwhyistherereallyabrothermartinatyourchapel...." She continues like that for several minutes. Diana's starting to look pretty concerned about the elf. You're rather concerned yourself, she does need to breathe right?

"I'm sorry is something wrong?" Oh Martin's here yay!

"Calm down Morlia, it's just a coincidence. Martin's a common enough name, there's no need to panic..." Morlia's a little busy getting her breathing under control to answer. You suppose it's up to you. Goodie!

He Might not be able to Shout and a trip all the way to skyrim is not feasible. It would take a year to actually get there and get back. he would not have the time to learn much from the grey beards

Shouting is not that simple you need eiter
  • Dragon souls
  • months at minimum
to learn a single shout even with dragon blood

this reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask.

how long did it take Ulfrik to learn Shouting? he was pretty damn good at it if he could use it on its own to kill the high king, and with Martin being of the Emperor's line and thus having dragon blood, he should be able to do it a lot faster.

Nope. As I've said before, you can learn the meaning of a Dragon Word without killing anyone if the person teaching you has the understanding and freely shares it with you. It definitely happens with the Greybeards with the word "Ro," and I believe Paarthunax helps you with the flame breath Shout word, so that you can properly greet him.

from I understand he worked with them for a year or two ( My skyrim lore is a bit rusty though) my bet is Martin would be able to use simple shouts with a Month of training per shout How ever with a travel time issue I dont think he can get their and learn sufficient Shouts to be useful in time for the oblivion crisis.

We don't have that understanding so we can't freely share it. even if we managed to get to the Grey breards i doubtthey would teach him everything due to him being a bastard ( the literal kind not the metaphorical kind ) and him planning on using it for violence

We write them a note that says he's planning on using it in Akatosh's Name. They helped the Dovahkiin who would be the same kind of way that Martin is. They state straight up that the Dragonborn are meant to use their Thu'um in the world. Because it is a gift of Akatosh, not Kyne.

Besides, I feel like the Greybeards are completely missing the irony of their study of the Voice. There is no difference for the dragons--You know, the beings whose language the Greybeards are using--in a civil debate and a fight to the death. It is meant for defense and attack. Thus using it to defend the realm is something that they should be very willing to get behind.

A having a sense of the value of life, means knowing how precious your own is and being willing to defend it.

Even if Martain agrees to go , even if they agree and they teach martin using the whole accelerated learning thing at minimum even if we hurry now we would not get back in time to stop the Oblivion crisis.

we would best be able to help by playing the roll of the Hero of Kvatch ( untill the PC guy shows up) and do some prep work against the Dagon cultists. we Know where their base is if we can grab some blades and some forces we Might be able to prevent it from occurring

the fact that you seem so certain that the Hero of Kvatch won't get butterflied away by us being here...

No, we actually need to do something about these problems.

How do you figure that? Arena, TES I, which takes place over every province of Tamriel, only takes one year for the MC to complete. So you can't honestly think that the travel time is what would stop him. Learning the Shouts? The Greybeards have the knowledge, and if they don't, Paarthunax does. And the old dragon would probably love Martin. Even if we don't slip in a mention that if they do nothing then before two years are out he'd be the Avatar of Akatosh.
