We're literally half dead in wounds and have absolutely no rerolls left. The next enemy is approximately twice as big. Eh, why not?

@gman391 Couple of questions, how many dead assassins do we see at the bottem of the tower? Will we have any stealthy options to change the odds of the next encounter?

In the mean time my vote is:
[X] Yes, samurai do what they have to no matter the odds.

Poor assassin, didn't figure on dealing with Megumi.
You said that she spent the last month meditating. This isn't meditating!
Brittle is also not found in any books but is a catch all to represent the effects some weapons have.
Huh it sounds familiar. Let me see.
Little Truths said:
FRAGILE
The item is delicate or poorly made, and can easily be broken. If a weapon, it will break if more than one die explodes on a damage roll. If armor, any damage roll made against the wearer that deals more than 10 Wounds reduces the Reduction by 1. When the Reduction reaches 0, the armor is destroyed.
Alright there's something similar in a house rules book (I think, it does also refer to 3e source books a lot so it might be the wrong generation). Regardless that's probably where I'm getting confused.

Megumi doesn't see any, that doesn't mean they're full strength though, it is after all still dark. You will have the choice to choose various approaches as well as give your own write ins.

She meditated on the divine spark that inhabits all people with souls as a gift of the heavens. That she used said divine spark to fight is well, just something Samurai do.

Its late and i may not have read everything in detail but.... dress like one of the assassins/check them for any kind of gear? Acting is not a low skill

Well, you can probably steal one of their clothes if you don't mind the blood. However, Acting is not a skill Megumi possesses meaning it'd be a raw awareness check with no explosions.

[X] Yes, samurai do what they have to no matter the odds.

Wouldn't that be a low tactic? We need all the Honor we can get.

Let's separate a few things...
- Honor and Glory would both be generically useful for getting back into most Clans. On the other hand, we're heading off to rescue a rather important Scorpion. If we want to try getting back into the Clans *that* way....
- Getting Grandmother happy with us again would be good. There's a lot of agreement between "honorable actions" and "things that would make Grandmother happy" but they are not one and the same.
- Honor is generally somewhat useful, but it's also something of a luxury - and it's a luxury that we may find expensive some times.

So... going with the honorable answer is often going to be worthwhile, but that doesn't mean we should grab for it blindly every time.

Now, in this case? I'd say it might be worthwhile to rifle through the bodies to see if there are any clues or anything, but trying to cobble their outfits together into disguises is far too likely to backfire (and may take too long). Now, if we get there, and we have an opportunity to do something like assault them from the shadows, that's a lot more likely to be worthwhile.

Ultimately its GM's decision but I suspect that uusing acting as a deliberate deception would be considered low. Which means that we would lose 0.2 points of our 4.4 to a total of 4.2. Notably honour mechanically is rounded off into whole numbers when used for resisting fear, intimidation, temptation and more obscure effects.

So in practice we can get away with playing dress up twice before its something we have to think about. Gran not withstanding.

edit: Just thought that I should note that I think we might need to resist intimidation rolls fairly often in this quest and possibly temptation if our reputation preceeds us. Fear only if there's a boss monster.

Arc II: Finding a trail
- Yes, samurai do what they have to, no matter the odds.

In the end you have no choice. Whatever you feel about Bayushi-san, you owe Yukiko one so you would go for that alone, even if honour didn't tell you to do it.

"Hai, I'll go. Is Kakita-sama going to be okay?" You ask.

Izu nods. "He'll be okay in a while. The poison on their blades is a paralytic...so he's just not quite able to fight it off yet."

You hold out your hand and Izu places in your palm a glowing blue bottle.
"May the Tao Light your Path and the Fortunes Grant you Strength," he says .

The feeling of the cool ceramic on your lips lets you get out of answering his blessing, as the kami flow through you. You feel your body knitting itself back together, healing that would take weeks in seconds.

The Tamori make some gooood stuff alright.

"Arigato Togashi-sama, please take care of Kakita-sama for me," you say before heading off.

It's dark and it's hard to see, even with the light of Lady Moon. You actually aren't that good of a hunter but, you know enough to get by.

Kneeling down, you see the thin trail of blood. Well touch really...still, it's something.
You've got a lot of problems but finding bad guys ain't one.

It's slow going through the dark night. You honestly have no idea where you are anymore, or where you're going, but you're following that trail, that's all you have...and you don't think you're catching up at all. As you go up and around various mountains, you reflect that you probably should have made preparations...but eh, you'll figure something out.

Finally, you find yourself kneeling behind a rock and looking over a small ridge in the gray twilight before dawn. You're pretty tired, but you can keep going for a while.

Thing is, you aren't sure you want to.
Coming out of the mountain a large temple made of stone sits. It's arch ways remind you vaguely of the gaijin architecture in the city. The arch ways each hold a twisting, almost viscerally unnatural figure standing up in it, grasping what looks like the sun and moon in its palms. Sagon maybe? You don't know why Sagon's head was made to be the bastard offspring of a dog, bird and dragonfly, you do know you don't like it though. Seriously, why can't they have nice looking gods like the Fortunes? Come to think of it, why can't they just worship the Fortunes?

In the valley, you can just spot the small group carrying two people. Yukiko and Sora…
Looking back at the temple you can see that it has to have at least a dozen people in there probably closer to three dozen if the flickering lights are any indication.

You don't think you can take on that many people. You're alright with a blade, but even sensei or mother would have trouble with that many foes….

The feel of cold steel against your neck is your first clue that you aren't alone.

A male voice speaks, its thick accent reminding you vaguely of...of Sister Chou, of all people..

"Who are you? Why are you here? If you scream, I will kill you."

[] What say?

[X] -The Truth. If that person were with the Cultists, they would not mind screams to alert the others. Say who you are, your allegiance and then why you are here and who sent you, outlying generic that "we were attacked in the night".
--Then ask if he and you share a common goal or not.

well... if this person was with the cultists, they'd almost certainly have reacted in some other way. Among other things, they wouldn't be nearly so troubled by the idea of our screaming. Given that, they're likely opposed to the cultists - and with a blade to our neck, it behooves us to be honest and forthright (also the honorable thing).

[x]"I am Megumi. Those cultists have kidnapped two of my comrades, and I aim to get them back. Who are you?"

[X] "Megumi" Calm with much on. "I plan on saving some lives. " Careful glance over shoulder. "Samurai don't scream, out of bed" Smirk

Though I must admit, "Samurai don't scream, out of bed" was a strong contender lol

Arc II: Hello Taj-san
--"I am Megumi. Those cultists have kidnapped two of my comrades, and I aim to get them back. Who are you?"

You take a slow, deep breath, trying to make yourself seem as non-threatening as possible. You're not really fast enough to dodge this. Still, he's probably not a cultist, given he doesn't want to be heard by said cultists.

Which means honesty is the best policy.

'It is always the best policy, Sakura!'

'Yes, grandmother,' you think back, in as obedient a tone as possible..

"I am Megumi the ronin, Hohei of the Tenth Legion. Those cultists have kidnapped two of my comrades and I aim to get them back. Who are you?"

The blade moves from your throat.
"You are either very brave, very stupid, or very lucky - knowing what I do of your people, it's probably all three. I am Taj Bendi, Third Pramukh Sanik, Baaz division of 12th Army."

You turn around to see a relatively small man all things considered. He wears a turban, but his black eyes look far too much like a predator's to let you be at ease with him, even if he hadn't been holding that strange curved knife to your throat seconds before. While the eyes are the obvious sign of his martial disposition, the fact that his muscles are barely concealed by the normally loose clothing of the Invidi adds to the image of a man used to, and probably very good at, violence.

"Hi," you decide on saying finally.

"Hello," he answers after a moment.

"So um...why are you here?" You ask.

He shifts looking at you and at his knife.
"Orders."

"Are you going to tell me what kind of orders?" you ask.

"Not unless I have to."

"What would make you have to?"

"If I needed your help. Those your comrades in that train down there?"

"Hai."

He raises an eyebrow.

He might not need your help but you probably need his.
So it's with some reluctance that you answer his unspoken question.

"Iuchi Yukiko-sama and Bayush Sora-sama."

His eyes narrow in suspicion and anger.
"...is this Iuchi one of your magic users?"

You guess from the way he says 'magic' that he actually kind of hates the idea of them.

"She is a Priestess yes," you agree.

A low sound of restrained...exasperation is the best word, you think.
"Please, do not call her that...but damn...it's coincidence...but not one I can ignore."

"Eh?" Your confusion is evident in your tone.

"Why kidnap both a magic user and a guru...no...something is definitely up. How far away are you from a formal detachment of your Legion?" Taj asks.

You think, and you guess maybe 2 and half days from the city...which is really close if you think about it. Also, what the heck is a Guru?

"Two and half days maybe? I've left some comrades behind, but they're only half a day out."

"They fit to fight?" He presses on impatiently.

You think back to Izu and Toshiro.
"...probably not."

"When were you due back?" Taj continues to ask.

Whenever Akodo-sama decided you'd had enough, but you don't really want to say that.

"I don't know"

Smoothly twirling the hilt of his blade around in his hand, he abruptly sheaths it.
"Well, that's just a merry bunch of pickled beets now isn't it?"

A blink from you as you try to work out that phrase.
"...merry bunch of pickled beets?"

He gives you a look that apparently can't decide if it's sarcastic or sheepish.
"...it sounds better in Ivindi."

Taj seems really agitated but you aren't sure why. It's almost like how the Lion get around Scorpion.

"Okay...why are you so worked up?" You ask.

The Ivindi looks at you.
"Well, you know that the cult practices human sacrifice right?"

"I do…"

Taj looks back at the still travelling kidnappers.
"If they follow their usual pattern, they'll sacrifice both the guru and your magic user at the same time to consume their flesh."

"Yes, but we have time right?" You ask.
A part of you knows the answer is no, but that optimistic part of you always says to hope for the best anyways.

A deep sigh from Taj. .
"No, no we don't. I forgive you for being ignorant, it's not like the Cult has made much inroads into your city yet. But the process of this is always the same. Kidnap them in the night. Sedate them during the day, At night drain their blood into a goblet made of ivory...drink the blood. The second day, you slowly cook them, eating them the second night, and on the last day you work their bones into meal….it's disgusting a perversion of all that is right, for all that it gives you power…they have never deviated from this. It is why we are able to root them out more often than not."

"So you're saying…" You say not wanting to finish the thought.

"The Iuchi and Guru Sahal will likely be dead by the end of tonight."

You look at the temple.
"There's no way the two of us can take on that many is there," you ask softly.

Taj shakes his head.
"No...my plan was to sneak in, free Guru Sahal, and then sneak out with him, but I can't sneak out with three people...and you don't seem to be the type..."

"...I am not," you admit ruefully.

"...which means we need another plan…"

"Hai."

You sit down to think of a plan, even as Taj sits down besides you and offers something that you presume is Ivindi food.

[X] "Do they patrol? Could we take them in small groups? Outside of that, I have only one idea. I will distract them, as you get my comrades out. If you can get them up and moving they can contribute from behind."

I don't suppose we have a map?
Ambushing only works if the small groups don't make a noise and we don't take damage each time.
As for distractions it would need to be big. If we just charged up the front steps we'd have to fight the guards on duty and if we're lucky they'd send a runner to whoever is watching the captives telling them to make another batch of the sedative. We alone are not enough of a threat to make them send reinforcements or do anything to leave the prisoners unguarded.
Things that might are arson, avalanches, gajin pepper off of the top of my head.
