They do in canon L5R because they're profoundly unoriginal. I tend to read it as most families changing the name to their founders name sometime in the second or third generation to reinforce their legitimacy. When main family houses are replaced, the new house tends to take up the founder name as well so it becomes self reinforcing.
Cool. Oh one other thing. I looked up the area. Is sticking what will likely be a high void clan in between the Phoenix and dragon a coincidence or deliberate?

[X] Take the reward and found a Minor Clan (Write in Name)

On a related note.....

I'm pretty sure we'd be dead in 6 months, if we became Scorpions. They have a ...... unique version of the Code of Bushido. We just don't share it, and parts of the Clan would kill us for it.

I seriously doubt it. We'd be working directly for Bayushi Sora, and she knows who and what we are pretty well by now. She wouldn't be sending us to do things that we'd be terrible at doing, and as long as we're serving her properly, the rest of the family isn't going to get too bent out of shape about it.

Personally, I'm a bit concerned about the idea of starting a minor clan, because we're kind of lacking in a number of important aspects - like having anyone in our family other than ourselves, or otherwise having anyone we know and can trust that will work for us, like having any real skills at clan management, and so forth. We have a hell of a magistrate school to teach, but other than that?

Eh.

That's how most of the Minor Clans get their start. We'll at least have a few friends in mutiple Clans, and the ear of the Emerald Throne.

Most minor clans had *somebody*. They had a band of ronin, or something similar. We have a few friends here and there, but we have straight-up nobody who would actually come with us, because literally all of our friends are major-clan. I'm certain that there are ways to recruit, but it's hard to find people you can trust that way.

Also, we have the Kolat hating on us at least a little, which makes it that much trickier. I'm not saying it's untenable, but it's a much riskier proposition than going into the direct service of a family head who knows us and appreciates us for what we are. Even if they don't want to deploy us as a magistrate, we make a hell of a yojimbo, and that's definitely something that the Scorpion have a need for.

I get what you're saying but I don't think this is a vote we need to think too hard over. We've been told that next update will be an epilogue and that Gman was happy to let this stand as the final post in its own right.
This is a pick your happy ending vote neither option will end badly. However Clan Champion will probably end with a more stressed megumi.
Basically the same way picking scorpion won't have our epilogue be at megumis funeral.

Given this is the ending we get to choose, I like the idea of our own Minor Clan, built around the School we made. Serious combat monsters, with a spiritual tinge. Fun stuff!

Now that I think of it, I'd be down with joining almost any other clan over the Scorpion. It just..... doesn't work for me. At all.

Alright tally time, although I think I know what won.
Or not as we have a tie...I think I prefer it that way.
Let the ending stand as is, and no epilogue, you can be sure that Megumi did eventually have descendants, and if I decide to do a follow up quest to this in the future. We'll be following her grand daughter as she receives a certain old fan. But that's for the future.

Guess there's the issue with breaking the tie, right? In that case.

[] Take Sora's offer and become a Bayushi

Yeah I should probably call a Mod to lock this or something. That said, I do think that the story is effectively tied up as it is. Megumi's story is over at least the part I'm able to tell, and that's okay.
