My question is really simple, why did you have to rush it first turn? Why? You still would have gotten what you said was your primary goal, establishing an entertainment sector, in voting for Patron if we took it turn two. You realize what you gave up to take Patron first turn? We could have had a network of contacts across the Empire, we could have had allies in and thus some access to every court. However, you instead you chose Patron of the Arts turn 1, a choice whose one advantage is that it somewhat legitimized the Geisha. Then you throw that away and never use the advantage you chose. Was it really worth taking Patron as a turn 1 choice just to moderately patch up one of the many things our clan could be criticized for? It is irrelevant now given that Koibu has already won, but when you commit to an option with high opportunity costs, commit to it with the intention of getting something worth those costs out of it. If we hadn't taken Patron turn 1 and just turtled up at court as I initially suggested, and you seem now to favor, we would have gotten some taunts over the Geisha thing, but nothing that would cause lasting harm. Instead turn 1 we chose to position ourselves for strong plays in court, by making it possible to bring our best diplomatic specialist and by trying to get blackmail material on the departing nobles. Now people want to throw that investment away and play defensive. I mean why am I the one being asked to come up for objectives for court? I who voted against the court options. Shouldn't everyone who voted for them have had something in mind when they chose it?

Paragraphs. They're a thing.

And I picked it because it was the most interesting choice that turn, and unlike you, I'm not willing to dismiss the new options we'll get next turn as valueless. I did not pick Patron of the Arts because I was terrified of having a slightly higher infamy rating at Winter Court.

You're being asked for Winter Court objectives because you're trying to argue people into voting for a high-risk play. No duh people ask you how you intend for that risk to pay off - otherwise you look like you're just trying to spite the other voters in the quest for not following your lead in the first turn.

Also, if you have any intention of trying to change my mind about things - read what I say about why I make the choices I pick. Defeating a strawman doesn't help convince me of anything.

OK, so what I see here is a legitimate conflict of interests and values. Colors for emphasis.

The polite, reasoned way to handle it:

Platypus: Candesce, I'm a little bit confused about why you don't seem to want to bring Hatsuyuki along this turn. My understanding was that the benefit of legitimizing the Geisha immediately was to leverage their strengths at Winter Court next turn. I still feel like not taking the chance to make friends with the nobles was a huge opportunity cost, and since that vote lost I feel like the best way to make up for that lost opportunity is to double down on the geisha and leverage the huge success we just had. Can you please explain why you seem to feel differently?

Candesce: Platypus, I actually voted for the geisha because I was more concerned about what was best for our long term growth than lost opportunities, and didn't feel like the scummy nobles were as important. I feel like taking the more diplomatic Koibu to Winter Court will be a better way of making those friends in every clan that you mentioned, because I agree that is important, but would prefer to do it with honorable samurai instead.

Tl; dr: To avoid making the QM cranky and to avoid silly internet arguments, use I instead of you, and avoid making direct statements about other people's intent by using your impressions of their behavior instead. And if it doesn't matter, because this is all just a game, let it go.

Argh, every time I see that line...

GEISHA ARE NOT PROSTITUTES! They aren't people, true, but they aren't there for sex. A samurai's geisha is the only person he can drop On in front of without worry or concern. They can give comfort and hold conversations he wouldn't even have with his wife for crying out loud. Actual romantic affairs aren't a planned part of the program, and a geisha can entirely ruin her reputation and livelihood if she gets caught up in a liason while her contract is still owned by her mistress. Lower order girls might slip down in to that hole, and undoubtedly do in the hive of scum and villainy that is Zakyo Toshi, but as an industry that's not what it's about.

I feel like there's a disconnect between perception and setting notes/fluff on this that's detracting from a very interesting aspect of our clan here.

To be fair, some geisha are little better than prostitutes, in part due to their marginalization as a social group. If the Catfish has its way, the geisha of Zakyo Toshi will be much more like what you describe than not.

right so, gift ideas.

for the crab,
[X] A beautifully painted Oar. This will send a message that you consider them to be stalwart defenders of the Emperor.

as much as I would like to go all in on our alliance with the crab, we so do not want to make enemies of any of the great clans right now. Besides, the crab are pragmatic enofgh that we would probably get more out doing what little we can to alleviate there resource shortage than some grand gesture.

for everone else but the scorpions

[X] Sake. This indicates a willingness to be friends with everyone, an invitation to come relax in Zakyo Toshi, and so on.

sending the message that we don't want any trouble, and are willing to trade with anyone would be rather beneficial for a yong clan who mostly subsists on trade.

however I think we should also give the scorpions something special, with the intent of indicating we would be interested in forging some sort of alliance or friendship with them. Given there appreciation of subtlety we might consider giving them something that looks like what we gave everyone else. For example they get Sake as well, but there's is of is of slightly higher quality, or the bottles feature both scorpions and catfish, or some other subtle hint that we would be interested in deepening our ties to them.

Some, but not all. I'm just saying that the constant notes and assumptions about the reaction bringing a geisha to court would engender are really off base from the role they occupy in the setting. They're marginalized in that they fall outside of the Celestial Order, but in a very real sense that doesn't matter to them. There's an entire social structure there, with rules and just as strongly regimented hierarchy and control as one would see in the samurai class with bushido. Within that world market forces obviously might push an okiya to run a bit more dirty, but that doesn't change the fact that at the higher end a geisha will make enough in an evening of letting a bushi cry on her shoulder to feed a family for months.

I realize this is pretty much moot since we've gone with Koibu, but our clan's very intimate relationship with their world is probably going to come up again since it is an oddity, and nuance is important.

So, it was mentioned earlier that the Catfish would have an interest in the Shinomen Mori, and I have to wonder why, or rather what that might be? The whole forest is... not friendly to Humanity. The Tanuki vanished into it, the Fox ended up interbreeding with actual magical kitsune , and the whole place is filled with hostile spirits.

The Forest is hostile to attempts at exploiting it, so beyond keeping a weather eye out for any weirdness I'm not sure what exactly the Catfish will be doing with it given their present setup seems more invested in practicalities like feeding their people, and strengthening their provinces in practical ways.

Probably keeping the spirits happy enough to not eat the town? Idk, it makes sense that they don't want to go in there but you need to keep Kitsune placated or bad things start happening.

The Forest of the Fox is Kitsune Mori, to the south.

With that said, yeah it's unfriendly... but it's also an enormous source of lumber, and the Empire is always hungry for wood. It also stands on soil that would probably be just fine for growing rice...

Not screwing with Shinomen is definitely an option, but the forest represents a clear and present temptation.

I'm going to say that the Raven and the Salamander do not currently exist, as both are a little bit too close to the Catfish in ideology and I want to keep our 'thing' sort of unique.
I wouldn't say that Salamander are too close to the Catfish in ideology. Despite some similarities like being river-based and not being asshole to heimin where it's not needed they are first and foremost scholar clan. Well-educated underclass is direct result of that as in case of small clan as lower strata had to pull it's weight in main purpose of the clan. I suspect they could be quite assholeish to heimin that don't fit clan niche.

Trust me, you guys will have enough to worry about without getting into pissing matches with a shugenja clan over who the best River Clan is. Be grateful. :p

In regards to Shinomen, I think it's the simple fact that it's basically right on our border, which means we can't just outright ignore it, no matter how much we might want to.
Even if we don't go and try to use it as a source of lumber, or clear the land for more farms, it'd still be a hiding place for bandits and outlaws, and as such something we'd need to deal with in at least some fashion, because events there impact our lands.

I would just put forts and watch towers near the border of the Forest for now. Helpful in keeping things in and give us a good point to work with if/when we do decide to go in.

Winter 913 - Turn 2.1 - Journey To The Face Of The East
Winter 913 - Turn 2

[X] The most loyal / The most skilled compromise
[X] Koibu
[X] Memorial

[X] Sake

When you were told that Winter Court would be in Face Of The East Castle in Yasuki lands, you had originally expected that it would be just a nice quick sail downriver to the sea, where the majority of Yasuki lands lie, adjacent to the Crane.

That illusion was quickly shattered once you looked at a map. Shiro Kaotsuki No Higashi is in fact on the eastern slope of the Twilight Mountains, well to the northwest of most of Crab lands! To get there you will have to travel through Maemikake, then take a long horseback ride or walk around the southern reaches of Shinomen Mori, a journey of several weeks.

Luckily, you are traveling in a small party and can move fast. With the knowledge that you may only bring ten guests, your choice of delegations becomes remarkably constrained. If you had a larger party, you could have invited Hatsuyuki, but including a geisha as one of only ten delegates pushes heavily at the bounds of propriety. Instead you are bringing Koibu despite his advanced age and the newness of Wave Province. You spoke solemnly with Jiro before you left, letting him know of your trust in him by leaving him alone to manage Wave on his own, and he took your vote of confidence in him well, your inner gift letting you know that whatever lingering resentment he may have had when you first took over Namazu Province seems to be long gone.

For your yojimbo, you decide on putting your best foot forwards with Jumonji, Kuroki, and Togano, three of the strongest warriors currently among the ranks of your clan - and Taigen and Gohei, who are not nearly so accomplished, but whose loyalty to you and fame in the Crab lands as samurai who have rescued the Emperor more than make up for that small deficit. Minato, Chouko, Wakaba, and Yu make up the rest of your traveling party and largely seem happy to be seeing more of the world, though Yu seems uncomfortable being separated from his wife and Wakaba is nearly inconsolate at being away from her brother for so long.

Winter is scratching on Autumn's screen as you set out from Zakyo Toshi; despite the southern latitudes the wind blows chill and damp, punctuating your journey with clammy fogs and sudden squalls. As you ride across the rice paddies of the Northern Crab you find yourself grateful for the animal heat of the stocky pony beneath you and for the heavy haori gifted to you by Hantei-heika. Of your traveling companions it is probably Chouko who is most impaired by the chill; despite months of living away from the monastery of Dangai she still eats but sparingly, and has maintained her unusually thin frame. Despite her obvious discomfort Chouko refuses any offers of assistance, and can occasionally be seen staring at a lit cigarette as if to explain to the kami of Fire inside about what it means to be cold.

Other than the weather, however, there is very little unpleasantness to your travel. Heimin view you completely without the contempt that marked so many of your previous journeys as ronin. Hiruma bushi scouts keep the roads clear of any foolish bandits who would think of menacing any of the many important figures traveling the roads of the Crab. When you stop for the night in villages along the way, you are given food and shelter, all at the Crab's expense.

Your winning streak breaks in the Village of Oolong Tea, a minor village on the eastern edge of Yoake Province. While the heimin treat you as other heimin in Crab have, you have finally caught up with one of the other delegations traveling to Shiro Kaotsugi No Higashi - that of the Dragon Clan. While you had heard that the Dragon were contemplative, aescetic, and generally kind to those of lower status than themselves, the samurai accompanying this particular delegation seem almost an exception to that rule. You are treated quite coolly by several bushi of the Mirumoto family, and told to seek accommodations far from the best inn in town, which has been completely coopted by their own delegation.

You trudge across town in the chill, soaking rain, looking on with envy at the Great Clan samurai already beneath dry roofs. You eventually reach the village's other inn, anxious to find a place of peace and quiet - and a place for poor Chouko to get out of the rain - but even here you are not free from conflict. As you enter, you can see several younger Dragon bushi currently involved in an argument with a ronin, the three of them seeking to intimidate him into leaving 'because the inn is full', despite the fact that it is in fact nearly empty. The ronin himself appears to have been doing nothing more offensive than drinking tea.

Welp. I ah, don't think it's IC to not intervene, especially given that she was one of those ronin not too long ago.

The Hell is this? Mirumoto Bushi shaming the Dragon? THIS SHALL NOT STAND! Much as I would like the Dragon to be allies to the Catfish, if THIS is the sort of idiot that they're bringing with them then Togashi-no-Kami will THANK us for preventing them from further sullying the Dragon's honor!

That Ronin could very well have been us, though I am wary about this being far to convenient for my tastes. A former Ronin, now the head of the Empire's newest minor clan, on her way to her first Winter Court, and is pushed to the side by the Dragon, only for the only other inn in the town to have several more Dragon Bushi harassing a peaceful ronin.

I think the Dragon are trying to send us a message.

I think we should give our own in response.

possibly with subtle jabs about how its unbecoming of the great to go out of there way to take cheap shots at those below them. Dragon wants to send us a message we'll send one right back.
