Welcome to IaCWwaCS. A Xianxia inspired quest in an original setting. As I can't claim to be an expert in Chinese culture or idioms, expect there to be a few mistakes here and there. Though, I will try to stay close to what I've seen in actual Xianxia stories.

As always, suggestions and criticisms are welcome. If anyone thinks they can help make this a better quest, don't hesitate to pm me.

Now then, let's get to it.

In a Cultivation World with a Cheat System.
Arc One: The Clan Zhang.
Chapter One: Zhang Tian.

XxxOxxX

A cool breeze blows through a valley located at the base of a tall mountain. In the far distance, a large, bustling city can be seen. But here, just a few hours walk from those city walls, all is peaceful. Within this valley is a small lake that is fed by the waters of a river, one that climbs up around the mountain and off into distant lands. The wind blows swiftly through this valley, ruffling the tall grass and tree leaves, as well as causing small waves to form on the surface of the lake. On the shore of this lake stands a solitary figure. A young man with his hands clasped comfortably behind his back.

Looking to be around fifteen years of age, the teen is tall and slim in stature with soft yet angular facial features. The young teen is swathed in an extravagant robe of black silk with silver patterns in the form clouds. His coal black hair is long and lustrous, reaching down to his waist at the back while the front has been tied back by a number of delicate, golden hair clips. His eyes are a pale green, containing within them a hint of warmth and amusement that matches well with the soft smile on his face. From each of his ears dangles a small bead of polished jade the same color as his eyes. A matching amulet with a silver symbol carved into it hangs from his neck.

Were any of the locals from that distant city around, they would loudly exclaim in recognition at the sight of this young man. Shouts of 'Second Young Master Zhang!' ringing out while they rush forward to kowtow before him. Were any strangers about, they would instead recognize the symbol carved into the amulet hanging from his neck. A pair of words centered within a circle; Zhang Tian. This amulet of jade and silver is the symbol of the Zhang clan of Ye Country, one of the four Great Clans of Grand Ye, and unusable by non-clan members under punishment of death. Thus, by putting the two pieces of information together, one can conclude that this young man is Zhang Tian; the second young master of the Zhang clan.

Or, at least, that would the case to anyone but Zhang Tian himself.

What no other person knows, is that just under two weeks ago the life, and identity, of the young Zhang Tian had been irrevocably changed. Having transmigrated from the planet Earth, the twenty-six-year-old Canadian laborer John Smith had found himself inhabiting the body of Zhang Tian. Or rather, as he'd decided when equilibrium was finally reached between their two psyches, Zhang Tian had woken up one morning with the memories of the earthling John Smith.

As one can imagine, such a thing has a way of changing one's perspective. However, just two short weeks later, the two psyches have already fully merged into one entity. An entity containing the best parts of both individuals.

'Although,' Zhang Tian can't help but think, frowning slightly though his eyes remained fixed on the lake waters. 'It would have been nice if whoever did this also fixed my defect while they were merging our souls together.'

With the addition of John Smith's psyche, came the addition of his memories and such, and John Smith had been an avid reader of fantasy stories. Fanfictions written by the best, and worst, the Internet had to offer. Translated works of Xianxia, Wuxia, and Xuanhuan from those wonderous lands to the east. Not even John himself could say how many such stories he'd read in his short lifetime. With such a wealth of knowledge and experience to call upon, is it any surprise that Zhang Tian is willing to believe in the involvement of a third party in this matter?

No. Clearly, a ROB is to blame for this situation. Not that either part of him is complaining about the merge. Zhang Tian was just upset that the ROB hadn't seen fit to fix the defect that he'd been born with while it was mucking about in his soul. The same defect that had completely crushed the excited mood of his earthborn counterpart when he'd learned of it.

Unlike on Earth, but much like in a great many of the stories John had read, the people of this world are capable of Cultivation. By taking in the essence of the world, commonly known around these parts as 'Heaven and Earth Qi', the people of this world are capable of performing superhuman feats. Things like crossing dozens of meters in an instant, leaping over tall buildings, conjuring and controlling the elements, and even unassisted flight, are commonplace in this world. Even people Zhang Tian personally knows, people from his clan at that, are capable of such feats and many more.

Learning about this had put the John Smith part of him in such a high mood. After all, the displaced man had been wishing for magic and/or superpowers his whole life. Then he'd learned that Zhang Tian was born with a rare defect that prevented him from Cultivating. This single fact had brought his mood crashing down, as well as digging up some long-buried emotions within Zhang Tian. There'd been a sliver of hope when the two psyches had fully merged become one soul, but that hadn't panned out

In order to cultivate in this world, a person must have strong Spirit Roots. These are metaphysical pathways that form a link from the body to the soul. By learning how to draw out Soul Energy through these pathways, one can then interact with Heaven and Earth Qi and use their Soul Energy to draw it into the body. This mixed energy, commonly referred to as 'Mortal Qi', can then be used in a myriad of ways depending on the individual's talent and cultivation method.

'Sort of like Magic Circuits, OD, and Mana from the Fate series.' as John had put it.

The problem with Zhang Tian is that he was born with shriveled Spirit Roots. This rare condition means that his Spirit Roots are too weak and malformed to allow his Soul Energy to pass through them. Even just trying causes him to suffer through excruciating pain. As if countless needles are piercing his organs and muscles. Trying to push past the pain and force the matter isn't even an option, doing so would cause irreparable damage to his soul and shorten his lifespan. There'd been hope that the addition of John's soul, or at least the machinations of the ROB, had fixed this problem but no dice.

So here he is, the same old Zhang Tian with a bit of extra and completely unsure what to do with the changes in his life. Previously, he'd been content to live out a simple life running a number of his clan's businesses while leaving the more dangerous matters to his fellow clan members. This whole transmigration matter has reignited long forgotten dreams of power and greatness. It's almost painful to think of what could have been, knowing from John's many stories that there is likely a vast and fantastical world outside of Grand Ye. Maybe even other worlds and dimensions.

A sigh rings out.

'But what can I do about it? These are the cards I was deal-'

*Splash!*

The sound, and spray, of the water a few meters in front of him erupting upwards cut through his thoughts. Smiling softly once more, Zhang Tian watches as the waterlogged figure of an older man bursts up from the lake to land beside him with a soft thump. Clad only in a pair of black shorts, the man is almost a whole foot taller than Zhang Tian with a thick, muscular frame. His black, short cropped hair is currently soaked flat to his head and there is a fierceness in his brown eyes. The many scars dotting his form tell a tale of one who has faced combat many times to emerge damaged but victorious.

"Cho Mang." Zhang Tian speaks softly, turning to fully face the man. "You've returned."

"Young Master." The man, Cho Mang, replies in greeting.

This newly arrived man is none other than Cho Mang, an orphan child that was taken in and raised to serve the Zhang family. Back when Zhang Tian turned twelve years of age and was granted permission to venture outside of the clan compound on his own, it was Cho Mang that was assigned as his personal guard. Having acted in the role of Zhang Tian's guard and manservant and for the past three years, it is Cho Mang that is without a doubt the closest confidante of Zhang Tian.

"Any luck?" Zhang Tian asks. He is already aware of what the answer will be but the question is asked nonetheless.

Rather than a verbal response, Cho Mang instead holds out his left hand which has been clasped tightly shut this whole while. Slowly opening his fist, Cho Mang reveals the three, gumball-sized orbs held within. These orbs are a murky brown in color and seem to be formed of a soft, jelly-like substance as they wobble and slosh around in Cho Mang's cupped hands.

If any others were to see these three orbs, they would surely exclaim in shock. After all, these are the eggs of the Spiral Horned Toad, a Class 1 Spirit Beast that most would be fearful of facing. The eggs laid by this beast are considered to be quite valuable as they are a critical ingredient to forging the Arterial Reinforcement Pill, a high-grade cultivation resource that is very beneficial to all cultivators in the first realm of cultivation. A single one of these eggs could fetch enough silver to feed a small family for many months.

"Oh good, that's just enough." Zhang Tian says, smiling wide. "Put them with the rest."

In a move that would have many frothing at the mouth in desire, Zhang Tian crouches down to open a bulging sack lying at his feet to reveal what has to be nearly a hundred more of such eggs. In a move that would have had those same people coughing up blood, Cho Mang dismissively tosses the three new eggs into the pile before moving to wipe his hand clean. These are precious crafting materials that many would kill for yet these two are treating them like common trash. One is keeping them in a sack with no form of protection or preservation, the other has just tossed them about while looking like they'd sullied his hand. It's enough to almost drive one mad with rage.

Of course, these two wouldn't care for such things. Not only can the Zhang clan afford to buy ten times this number of eggs without batting an eye but of the two men, one is incapable of cultivating while the other has already cultivated to a realm where the resultant pills would be useless for his continued growth. What reason do they have to care about such materials?

"Well, this should be all that we need." Zhang Tian affirms, eyes darting over the bag of toad eggs before returning to Cho Mang's form. "Any troubles?"

Snorting, Cho Mang holds out his other arm for Zhang Tian to inspect. In this hand, held by its long, webbed feet is the body of a brown-skinned toad. The creature is almost the size of a small child, even while excluding the foot long spiral of bone jutting out from between its bulbous eyes. Said eyes are blank in death and a long, barbed tongue hangs limply from its wide, sharp-toothed maw.

"Nothing I couldn't handle." Cho Mang answers in a boastful tone.

Chuckling, Zhang Tian stands from his crouch and slings the sack of toad eggs over one shoulder.

"Right. Well, get dressed and let's head on back. Two days out in the wild is plenty enough for me."

As Cho Mang moves towards a nearby pile of clothing, Zhang Tian is unable to hold back another sigh as he shakes his head. These past two days at the lake with Cho Mang have certainly been fun but they've done nothing to help lift his spirits or clear his mind. In fact, they may have just made things worse.

These two days in the wild have really served to drive home just what he's missing out on with his inability to cultivate. Watching Cho Mang chop firewood with his bare hands, chase down a deer on foot for their meal, and keep watch the whole night without the need for rest had been envy-inducing enough but it's the egg gathering that really takes the cake. This time, for example, the older man had been underwater for fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes without needing to come up for air. Fifteen minutes where he'd fought, and defeated, a Class 1 Spirit Beast while suffering from a disadvantage due to the terrain. All without taking so much as a scratch. If Zhang Tian tried to do the same, he'd drown long before the toad could tear him to shreds.

It was all just so unfair. Why did he have to be born this way!?

Seeing Cho Mang dressing so they can leave, Zhang Tian can only sigh once more before turning away.

He makes it five steps before suddenly freezing in place, his expression twisting into one of shock and confusion.

XxxOxxX

As he dresses, Cho Mang can't help but sneak a glance or two at his young master. His eyes glimmer with a touch of happiness each time they land upon Zhang Tian's form. After their many years together as master and servant, Cho Mang has come to view the second young master of the Zhang family like something akin to a younger brother. One that he is immensely proud of.

When it was discovered that Zhang Tian could never cultivate, many had expected the young boy to wallow in despair. After all, everyone in the Zhang Clan knew just how much the young Zhang Tian was looking forward to practicing the art. Ever since he first watched a flashy mock spar between his older brother and father, the young Zhang Tian was completely enamored with the world of martial arts and cultivation. At that young age, when others were out playing and running about, Zhang Tian was instead in his father's study, reading history books about ancient heroes and their amazing feats. To be like them was his greatest wish.

Then his illness was discovered and his dreams crushed.

Like all the rest in the Zhang household, Cho Mang believed the young master would be broken by the discovery. It was one thing to want to cultivate but have little talent, but to want it yet be completely unable to ever cultivate? Greater men had been broken by less. In fact, Cho Mang knew of at least one fellow warrior that had opted for suicide after his cultivation base was destroyed in a training mishap. It was considered the sensible decision.

The days following the revelation had been quite stressful for everyone in the Zhang household as they took care around the young Zhang Tian. No one wanted to draw the ire of a young, upset noble after all. And Zhang Tian had been quite upset. Every toy and bauble he owned was destroyed. His sheets and clothes were shredded. Not even those storybooks that he once held precious escaped his fury. No one could calm him, not even his beloved older brother.

So it came as quite the surprise when, after just three days, Zhang Tian ended his tantrum. The previously ferocious boy simply appeared at the breakfast table one morning with his eyes dry and a look of determination on his face. To this day, none -not even Cho Mang, know what happened to the young boy but the Zhang Tian that emerged from his bedroom that morning was filled with a new resolve. If he couldn't be a Martial Warrior, then he would serve the Zhang clan in another manner.

From that day onwards, Zhang Tian devoted himself to his other studies. Finances and business management, history and etiquette. Any and all subjects deemed necessary for a young noble to dabble in were tackled, and eventually conquered, by the boy. The best tutors and teachers of the nation were hired at his behest, each imparting their teachings on the young Zhang Tian and leaving with words of praise about his intellect and work ethic. It was clear to all that Zhang Tian was shaping up to be a capable scion of the clan.

This was, of course, a relief to many in the clan. Even ignoring the cruel and spiteful nature that could have been bred from the despair over his affliction, there was still always that small chance of Zhang Tian instead turning into a 'silk pants' young master. With the way his parents and brother consistently doted on him, no one would have been overly surprised if Zhang Tian grew up to be like one of those many useless, spoiled, arrogant young masters.

Thankfully, that didn't happen.

Instead, Zhang Tian became a studious young man with a prosperous future ahead of him. Where other young masters of the same age wasted their fortunes away in bars, gambling dens, and pleasure houses, Zhang Tian spent his allowance on books and instructors. More often than not, he spent his days cooped up in his room or in the public sections of the clan library, pouring over one text or another.

So it was a bit of a surprise when the studious Zhang Tian asked to accompany Cho Mang on one of his resource gathering missions.

Like everyone else in the clan, Cho Mang would often go out on these missions from time to time. The Zhang clan might be rich and powerful, but they aren't so frivolous as to just hand out cultivation resources to every guard and servant. Doing so would impoverish the clan in no time. Instead, Zhang family servants and guards can purchase those items from the clan at a discounted price or complete missions to earn contribution points. These points can then be traded in for copies of cultivation manuals, innate techniques, pills, equipment or even personal guidance from a clan elder. Resource gathering missions like this one reward the most points, as those resources can be used to craft a number of pills and equipment that the clan can sell for profit whereas the rewarded points can only purchase one or two items. So, seeing as his charge would rather spend his days at home rather than wandering about the city, Cho Mang would often go out for a day or two to complete a mission.

When Zhang Tian asked to accompany him on one such mission, Cho Mang was greatly surprised. Surprised, but also glad. Honestly, seven years cooped up at home is not healthy for a young man. Even Lady Zhang was beginning to worry about the way her youngest was always buried in some book or another. A few days outside the clan compound would do him a world of good.

Of course, Cho Mang had been given a bone-chilling reminder -from the patriarch himself at that!, of what would happen to him if even a single hair of Zhang Tian's was harmed.

Which is why Cho Mang, consistently on his guard for danger to the young master, notices right away when Zhang Tian suddenly freezes in place.

Moving In a blur too fast to follow, Cho Mang appears beside Zhang Tian with his head darting about in search of a threat. His entire form is ablaze with power as a corona of barely visible, blue-tinted energy swirls around him. The soft earth beneath his feet craters, as if an invisible might is being exerted on it. A low hiss is heard as steam rises from Cho Mang's muscular form, the water covering him being flash boiled in an instant. The air is thick with tension.

"Young Master?" Cho Mang questions after a few moments of nothing happening. Though his keen senses are unable to detect anything threatening in the immediate area, Cho Mang doesn't drop his guard.

Jolted by the voice of his servant, Zhang Tian seems to shake himself awake.

"Ah, it's nothing. I was just struck by a sudden thought." Zhang Tian replies, his affable smile slipping back into place. "Sorry to worry you, Cho Mang."

Frowning, Cho Mang can only nod his head and return to dressing himself. There doesn't seem to be any danger as far as he can tell, and he trusts Zhang Tian to speak up if there is anything troubling him.

"Come, let's return home. I.. I feel like I have much to think about."

Nodding, Cho Mang falls in line behind his master as they make their way back towards the city. Due to having his young master along with him, Cho Mang is forced to travel at a much slower pace than he usually would. What most people would consider a normal walking pace is naught but a slow crawl in the eyes of a cultivator of his level. The short journey that would normally take him a dozen or so minutes at most, takes hours instead. Still, Cho Mang is in good spirits the whole while and follows at his master's back without complaint.

Unlike the initial journey out to the lake, filled with all manner of questions and amicable conversation, the return trip is made in complete silence. Zhang Tian seems to be deep in thought the whole way back, pondering whatever matter brought him to a stop earlier. Having years of experience with his master's many moods, Cho Mang knows it's best to remain silent and leave him to his thoughts.

Like that, two hours pass in silence before the two finally reach the city gates. Just in time too, as the sun begins to set and night falls over the land.

XxxOxxX

Named for the vibrant coloring of its various buildings, Crimsonwood City is considered one of the five major cities of Grand Ye. Located in the southernmost reaches of the country, it serves as a major hub of trading and tourism for all those in the region. With the surrounding mountains and the Crimsonwood Forest -a stretch of Spirit Beast infested woodland that encompasses the entire southern border of the country- so close by, the city also serves as a major defensive position for the rest of the country. Tens of thousands of souls pass through this city every day while millions more live within its thick walls.

To the west of the city lies the Zhang compound. A sprawling expanse of homes and shops built atop (and into) a number of short hills, the lands of the Zhang clan are expansive enough to be comparable to a small town. The sturdy gate and reinforced walls surrounding the whole compound give it a feeling akin to a large, defensible fortress.

With his emblem on display, Zhang Tian passes through the city's checkpoint and into the clan compound without issue. Only once they have stepped through the compound gates does he speak again.

"Cho Mang. You go and finish the mission without me. It's already this late so I will return to rest."

"Yes, young master."

Handing the bag of valuable resources over to Cho Mang, Zhang Tian turns and departs for his own home. Looking at the departing back of his young master, Cho Mang can only release a sigh full of worry before vanishing in a blur of movement.

XxxOxxX

Over a thousand steps are required to scale the series of hills that the Zhang clan compound is built upon. Every hundred or so steps up the stone stairway elegantly carved into the central hill, there are a number of smooth pathways that branch off towards groupings of homes, training grounds, and other assorted structures. These are all the small villages and districts that make up the whole that is the Zhang clan. Ignoring every one of the branches, Zhang Tian continues on towards the top of that long stairway. His pace is neither hurried nor rushed, Zhang Tian simply proceeds up the stairway one graceful step at a time. Zhang Tian would even stop every once in a while to greet and speak with the various guardsmen and servants that are also walking up or down the stairway. Like this, he slowly makes his way up the hill.

With the numerous stops along the way, it takes over half an hour for Zhang Tian to finally reach the top of the stairway. Nonetheless, there is a pleased smile on his face as he crests those final few steps and lays eyes on the structure atop of the hill. Before him stands a majestic building that seems to loom over everything below it. It is a manor house so ostentatious that one would not be wrong to compare it to an imperial palace. This is the house of the Zhang clan patriarch, Zhang Tian's father, and his family.

Rather than enter through the ornately decorated doorway, Zhang Tian simply nods to the two men guarding the entrance before turning and making his way around the building. A few minutes more of walking leads Zhang Tian to a walled courtyard. Within is a vibrant looking garden surrounding a deep pond thriving with fish. This harmonious piece of nature is only disturbed by a stout building constructed a short distance from the pond. This is Zhang Tian's home.

Though he has a room within the main manor, this auxiliary building was gifted to him by his parents some time ago. It is a place of absolute privacy that Zhang Tian is able to use however he chooses. If he were to turn around and go to the other side of the manor, he would find a similar looking courtyard belonging to his older brother

"Young master, you have returned." A gruff sounding voice calls out.

The speaker is a short, portly man in the decorated armor for guards of the Zhang clan. He stands to the left of the only entrance into Zhang Tian's courtyard.

"Welcome back young master." A soft voice chimes in.

This speaker stands on the right-hand side of the entrance. This guard is a woman, one that is tall and thin with a polite smile on her face.

"Hn. Thank you." Zhang Tian affirms, offering the two a nod as he passes them by. These two have been assigned to guard his home this week. The week previous was a different pair of guards and the week following will bring about yet a different pair.

The fourth elder, who handles the protection of the clan grounds, prefers to swap the various guards around rather than letting them get lazy with doing the same task every day. A boring guard job like this one is considered downtime for the guards. A welcome break from the normally intense training and long patrols they would have to do.

Walking through his courtyard, Zhang Tian proceeds to enter his home. As always, the interior of the building is spotlessly clean yet messy as well. The servants assigned to his home have long gotten used to the methods of cleaning the house without disturbing the mess of papers and texts scattered about the place. There is a homely feel to the whole place that causes Zhang Tian to smile as he shuts the door.

With slow and diligent movements, Zhang Tian proceeds to prepare and consume a small meal before changing into his sleepwear and extinguishing the Qi powered light crystals in the room. Only then, nestled under the covers of his bed with no chance of disturbance or distraction, does he pay attention to the block of text still floating at the forefront of his mind.

A system based on the Naruto world. Through the system, the MC can purchase and use any items, jutsu, bloodlines and etc from the Naruto world.
(The cultivation system of the world becomes one more focused on 'Blood Legacy' abilities and elemental manipulation).

[][System] Bleach System.
The system items are instead of the Bleach universe. This includes the abilities of all spirit factions as well as the personal techniques, weapons or tools of individual characters.
(The cultivation system of the world is more focused on weapon use and 'Spirit Beast Transformations'. I.e: temporary Hollowfication)

[][System] One Piece System.
Same as the rest. The MC can buy anything from the One Piece universe. Multiple devil fruits can be eaten by the MC but he can only have one active at a time.
(The cultivation system of the world is more focused on temporary physical enhancement with spiritual energies and close quarters martial arts.)

[][System] Supreme Cultivation System.
A cultivation system unique to the setting. The MC can buy weapons and armor, pills, techniques and etc that are unique to the setting. This is a freestyle system where the effects of purchasable items are basically anything the voters can imagine. The more powerful the voted purchase, the more expensive it will be -though cheaper alternatives will always be provided if the MC can't afford the voted choice.
(A cultivation world similar to most high fantasy Xianxia stories. The techniques of NPCs are all quite flashy and basically boil down to 'whatever cool idea pops into my head'.)

Mechanics and Glossary
Quest Mechanics.

See the Legend in the Character Sheet for some info. Again, attribute values are determined in comparison to the average cultivator of the same realm.

Strength and Speed should be self-explanatory.

Vitality: This measures stamina. The better the Vitality attribute, the longer Zhang Tian can last in a fight, or go without rest.

Comprehension: This determines how talented Zhang Tian is at comprehending new techniques. The better this attribute, the more Mastery XP his techniques gain. Comprehension can be raised by increasing knowledge and studying the Dao of various aspects of the universe.

Insight: This relates to Zhang Tian's ability to see into the heart of others. This lets him see through the schemes of other people, determine their base nature and trustworthiness, and understand their motivations.

Knowledge: This relates to Zhang Tian's knowledge regarding matters relevant to his cultivation level. It only applies to matters of cultivation, resources and items, and spirit beasts.

Cultivation Speed: How quickly Zhang Tian gains cultivation XP and advances through the realms.

Qi Creation: How quickly Zhang Tian creates new Qi through mixing his soul energy and the Qi of Heaven and Earth. Only relevant for the first cultivation realm.

Qi Capacity: How much Qi Zhang Tian can use before he runs out. Determines how long he can realistically last in a fight.

Qi Regen: How quickly Zhang Tian recovers Oi while resting or cultivating. Not relevant in the first cultivation realm.
Items, techniques and cultivation arts are ranked out of 5 ranks: Mortal --> Earth --> Heaven --> Immortal --> Divine. Each rank is further divided into 3 tiers: Low, Mid and High.

Techniques have 5 mastery levels:

Initiated --> Basic --> Intermediate --> Advanced --> Full. Mastery XP is gained through training and combat.
Zhang Tian is considered to have above average Intelligence and Comprehension at minimum. This grants him a starting number of 3d10 training dice, 1d100 combat experience dice, and 2d20 bonus dice.
  • Extra training dice and bonus dice can be temporarily gained from use of certain resources or facilities.
  • New dice can be permanently purchased from the system store.
Training Dice: Everytime Zhang Tian trains, the training dice are rolled and the resulting number is the amount of XP gained. This XP can then be allocated to any abilities that have an XP bar. Filling the XP bar will cause a rank up in the ability.

Combat Experience Dice: Training is good and all but real world experience is better. Every time an ability is used in a fight, Zhang Tian is able to gain some understanding of the ability. At the end of every combat, each ability that is used gets a 1d100 XP roll. This is the same regardless of how many times it was used in the fight.

Bonus Dice: These dice only can be assigned to certain abilities. Mainly just those that can be easily/subtly trained as Zhang Tian goes about his day. For each day that passes, the assigned abilities will gain bonus XP.
TBD

Welcome, User.

You have been accepted as a suitable host for the Supreme Cultivation System. The primary goal of this system is to aid the host in becoming a top class cultivator.

Congratulations!

As host of this great and magnificent system-

Reading up to here, Zhang Tian can't help but snort in amusement. Of all the mystical cheat systems he could have gotten, he manages to get the one that is full of itself. Truly, his luck can only be described as… unusual.

-you have been granted the opportunity to rise above the common rabble and stand unrivaled within Heaven and Earth.

Rejoice, host.

Here, Zhang Tian can't help but groan. For a moment, his thoughts turn towards the image of a certain fake priest.

Forcibly clearing the image from his mind, Zhang Tian returns his focus to the matter at hand.

For all your dreams may now come true.

[Continue]

A sigh passes through the quiet room.

Having pondered this matter the whole walk home, Zhang Tian is no longer in a state of shock. His mind had fallen into a frenzy when the words first appeared but after Cho Mang drew him out of it, Zhang Tian was able to calm down and think rationally. He then spent the entire trip back considering the matter. This is why he took his time returning home rather than have Cho Mang carry them back in haste. He needed that time to think.

Of course, he'd also tried to interrogate this 'Supreme Cultivation System' on the walk back but other than the option to continue becoming more insistent, he received no reply. So, Zhang Tian had walked and thought.

His main issue over this whole thing is, of course, the implications of -and his own feeling of dread from, those final words. Worrisome as they are, however, Zhang Tian wouldn't allow it to prevent him from grabbing onto this wondrous opportunity. After all, is this not exactly what he was hoping for just a few short hours ago?

Perhaps he should still be shocked and confused. Perhaps he should be more objective and cautious. How could he be any of those things though, when the chance to finally cultivate and live a life of adventure like those in the stories is presented to him? Why would he ever let such an opportunity slip him by?

Besides, doesn't he have memories of reading about this exact same situation in scores of stories? Something like this is exactly what he was hoping -no, praying, for when he first woke up with new memories. What can he do but readily accept the situation?

Finally, after all these years of disappointment, the heavens have smiled down upon him.

So, now that he is somewhere quiet and can afford to give the System his full attention, Zhang Tian selects the [Continue] option with a simple thought. As he'd expected, the system is simple to use and easy to work. Somehow, it is able to tell when his thoughts are directed at it and when he is just thinking. Troubling? Perhaps, but what can he really do against a being powerful enough to create such a system in the first place? Nothing, that's what.

Besides, Zhang Tian can't really think of anything he knows that would be worth going through all of this trouble to acquire. So, rather than focus on such thoughts, he turns his attention to the new text the system has displayed within his mind.

Host,

A scan has been made of your body and soul. Problems have been discovered.

Although your suitability is the best out of all potential hosts, it is deemed by this great system that the host is far too weak to defeat any enemies capable of generating system points. This issue must be remedied immediately...

Congratulations host!

You have received a once in a lifetime opportunity!

As the new host of this benevolent and magnanimous system, you are to be awarded a Specialty Starter Pack.

Please accept (200) System Points!

Please accept (1) Full Body and Soul Repair Service (to be used automatically at the end of this introduction)!

This time, Zhang Tian is shocked silent. This.. is this it? The solution to his defect?

Though he has already accepted this system as a boon, this is really driving it home for Zhang Tian. His dream is really coming true. Whatever else the system is capable of, Zhang Tian doesn't care. Just this alone is enough for him-

Host,

Please select (1) Innate Trait (High-Heaven rank or lower) to receive for free.

Rank: traits, techniques and the like are all ranked based on overall power and effect. The ranks, in ascending order, are Mortal, Earth, Heaven, Immortal, and Divine. Each rank is further divided into tiers of Low, Mid and High.

Suppression: when two cultivators fight, the cultivator with the higher cultivation base is able to use their Qi to suppress the abilities of the weaker cultivator. This can range from a slight bit of weight pressuring them down to full body paralysis (Think Reiatsu from Bleach). In this quest, the suppression effect mainly appears as a decrease in all combat attributes. The greater the difference between the cultivation base of Zhang Tian and an enemy, the more his stats are decreased.

Pill Side Effect: a cultivator is only able to consume and digest a single pill at a time, with each pill having its own digestion time and a limit to the total number of times it can be used effectively. This is a set rule regardless of the type of pill or its compatibility with other pills (unless it's a special pill with an effect that negates this). Going against this rule causes side effects ranging from an upset stomach to damage to the cultivator's foundation, or death by explosion.

Formation: formations are special arrays, made using unique materials and markers, that establish an AOE-type effect on a set area of space. The effects can vary but typically range from barriers, illusions, traps, or support effects like healing or a buff.

Inscriptions: inscriptions are runes that when applied to an item, will give it a special effect. Like an enchantment. Most inscribed items can only be used once before needing a new inscription. Some inscriptions can have longer lasting effects, like those placed on interspatial storage items.
[][Trait] Purified Spirit Furnace: Your soul produces a higher quality of soul energy. Qi created with this energy is easier to use and has a suppression effect on lesser energies.
+1 training dice.
Slightly weakens the suppresion effect from enemies that are stronger than Zhang Tian.
Doubles the suppresion effect on enemies that are weaker than Zhang Tian.
[][Trait] Resolute Soul: Your soul stands strong and resolute. Your will is absolute. Your convictions are unshakable.
Grants a slight defense against mental and soul attacks.
Grants complete immunity to the suppresion effect from stronger enemies.
[][Trait] Pure Yang Body (1/4): You are a man born with a body rich in Yang natured Qi. By absorbing Yang natured Qi, you are able to grow stronger.
Can absorb Yang Qi from certain items and beings. This can rank up the trait and improve its effects.
Manly attributes (STR and VIT) have a minimum value of Above Average.
Slight bonus to Yang type cultivation methods and techniques (anything to do with life, light, fire, the sun, etc).
Slight Weakness to Yin type effects (anything to do with death, cold, ice, the moon, etc. This weakness grows more severe as the trait is improved).
[][Trait] Nullifying Cauldron Stomach: Your stomach is comparable to Pill Cauldron, it is able to nullify and control a mix of volatile energies within it.
It is impossible for Zhang Tian to get sick or poisoned from anything he consumes.
Zhang Tian can digest up to two different, or three of the same, pills at a time without suffering from side effects.
Zhang Tian can consume, mix and then digest the materials of pills with a rank equal to. or below, his cultivation base within his stomach. Pills digested this way are twice as effective.
[][Trait] Dao Soul of 'Blank' (1/5): 'The Way Of Creation'. You have an innate comprehension of the underlying principals regarding a particular aspect of the universe. By comprehending this Dao, all things you do relating to this aspect are boosted.
[][Dao] Dao of Strength: No tricks matter before overwhelming Strength. All abilities that draw on your strength will gain a slight boost.
STR minimum value is set at Above Average.
[][Dao] Dao of Speed: Speed is King. All abilities that draw on your speed will gain a slight boost.
SPD minimum value is set at Above Average.
[][Dao] Dao of Comprehension: Your comprehensive abilities gain a slight increase, allowing you to better understand the inherent nature of all cultivation methods and innate techniques.
+3 training dice valued at 1d20 each.
[][Dao] Dao of Formations: You find that formations are easy to understand and utilize, making the final effect stronger than expected.
Formation type techniques gain double the mastery experience.
Formations created by Zhang Tian are 10% more effective.
[][Dao] Dao of Beasts: Spirit beasts of the same cultivation base feel a kinship with you.
Spirit Beasts of the same cultivation realm and lower are less likely to attack Zhang Tian.
Spirit Beasts of the same cultivation realm and lower are easier to tame.
[][Dao] Dao of Inspirations: You find that inscriptions are easier to understand and craft.
Inscriptions type techniques gain double the mastery experience.
There is a slim chance of applying a bonus effect when inscribing an item.
[][Dao] Dao of Pills: You have an innate understanding of the way different pill materials will mix and how best to bring out their full potential.
Pills are easier to craft and have a slightly better effect.
[][Dao] Dao of Forging: Your understanding of forging is nearly without equal. You are able to craft wroks of art with nary a thought.
Weapons, armor and tools forged by Zhang Tian will always be a slight bit better than they should be.
[][Dao] Dao of Weapons: You understand the truth of a particular weapon type. With this type of weapon in hand, you are nigh unstoppable. Your Qi becomes more attuned to your weapon. Such that, upon mastery, every move and strike is akin to a weapon art.

[][Beast] Write-in: a mythical beast and an element (Wood, Metal, Fire, Water or Earth).
[][Trait] Other... Write-in: any trait that would fit into a Xianxia setting. Try not to just crib something from some anime or another piece of work (I'm looking at you, Haxigan fans).

Please select (1) Cultivation Method (High-Earth rank or lower) to receive for free!

[][Cultivation] Write-in: provide a name, the end goal effect of the cultivation method and a suitable requirement to utilize it. There is no limit to how many cultivation methods Zhang Tian can learn but if you later get a new method that generally does the same thing but better, it will replace the old method.
Hell Gods Domination.
The user cultivates a body similar to that of a hell god. Their Qi becomes more malevolent and demonic. They become capable of transforming into the form of a hell god, gaining a great increase in strength and vitality. Cultivating this method increases the cultivator's natural strength and vitality, and any fire natured techniques they use will carry the power of hellfire. This method requires the user to cultivate while absorbing the energy from the beast core of a demonic spirit beast.

Or,

Nine Dragons Rampage.
The cultivator is able to summon a dragon for each realm they cultivate to, with each dragon being stronger than the last. Their Qi gains the traits of a dragon and all fire natured attacks gain a significant boost. This method boosts the cultivator's strength and speed. The cultivator can also take on the traits of a dragon, gaining powerful claws and horns, unbreakable scales, and a tail. This method requires the cultivator to consume blood from a reptilian spirit beast while cultivating. The more powerful the dragon aspects in the blood, the better the effects.

Please select (1) Innate Technique (High-Mortal rank or lower) to receive for free!
[][Technique] Write-in: please provide a name, the type (offense, defense, or movement), the main body part or item used, and a description.

Pay attention to the ranking, any techniques that are too powerful to fit within the ranking will be weakened. You can later upgrade when you have the points.
One Palm Advances, A Hundred Strike. Offense. Palms.
A speed-based technique where the user attacks so fast that it looks like only a single palm strike but the target is actually hit a hundred times.

A Hundred Cuts Seal The Pass. Defense. Sword.
The user cuts the space before them a hundred times in an instant, deflecting all attacks.

Heavenly Hare Tramples The Sky. Movement. Legs.
A hopping movement that allows the user to cover a great amount of distance in a single bound.

A/N: It's Taoist Costco, where all your dreams come true! Got a Dao for you!
But yeah, @The Froggy Ninja has created this spreadsheet for the shop and this spreadsheet for suggested things to put in the shop. Also, @Rotekian, before I can properly rank and price Nightmare's Stride I'm going to need a more precise description of how it functions.

A/N2: The chosen palm technique has been upgraded to a better version. The one you all voted for was only meant to be an example, not a vote.

In a Cultivation World with a Cheat System.
Arc One: The Clan Zhang.
Chapter Three: Receiving Rewards.

XxxOxxX

It was some time before Zhang Tian could catch his breath.

'What the hell is this!?'

Right as he was thinking that nothing else the system could offer would surpass the repair of his shriveled spirit roots, the system went ahead a rolled out this banquet of rewards. Cultivation manuals, innate traits, and innate techniques. High tier rewards the likes of which many cultivators would kill to get their hands on, and they were being offered to him for free. What sort of face slapping turnaround is this?

'Moreover, what is with these rankings?'

High-Heaven ranked innate traits.

High-Earth ranked cultivation manuals.

High-Mortal ranked innate techniques.

'This.. this is insane.'

To understand Zhang Tian's shock, one first understand the cultivation background of Grand Ye.

.…

To the understanding of the common person, there are a total of four cultivation realms. As the scion of a great clan, and one that has shown great interest in the clans' affairs, Zhang Tian is obviously privy to information the common person could never learn. From his lessons and reading, Zhang Tian is aware that rather than four cultivation realms, there are actually a total of nine realms. Even then, he knows nothing about those upper five realms aside from idle speculation. As for the first four realms, they are in turn-

The Body Refinement realm, where the cultivator purges the impurities from their body and attains a superhuman physique.

The Core Formation realm, where the cultivator creates a core capable of storing Heaven and Earth Qi within their body. In the previous realm, the cultivator would need to remain still for a few seconds in order to draw in Heaven and Earth Qi, and transform it into the Mortal Qi required for their techniques. In this realm, that transformation time is reduced to fractions of a second and the cultivator can even form Mortal Qi while moving.

Thirdly is the Core Ignition realm, where the cultivator infuses the 'Heaven and Earth Qi Core' with Soul Energy in order to transform it into a 'Mortal Qi Core'. With the Mortal Qi Core automatically producing Mortal Qi to sustain the cultivator, their capabilities achieve a whole new level of power. This is considered the true realm of cultivation, with the previous realms being nothing moran than an introduction into the world of cultivation.

Finally, there is the Ascendant Mortal realm. In this realm, the cultivator purges the impurities from their Qi and throws off the shackles of mortality. They become capable of flight and are able to achieve an incomparable level of power.

Within the ranking system used for traits, cultivation manuals, innate techniques, and various types of items, the first cultivation realm can be considered Mortal-rank, the second and third would be Earth-rank, while the fourth would be Heaven-rank. That is the level of difference in the rankings.

In the entirety of Grand Ye, there are perhaps ten or so Ascendant Mortal cultivators. Each one of these powerful existences stands as a pillar for each of the grand clans and great sects, the final weapon of each group. From this information, one can surmise that those items that would be Heaven-rank are also quite scarce. Forget Earth-rank, even a High-Mortal ranking is enough for most cultivators to come running.

This is the cultivation background of Grand Ye.

As such, it can be understood why Zhang Tian would be so shocked at the rankings of the rewards offered by the system. Even if all three rewards were to be within the Mortal-rank, Zhang Tian would still consider them as treasures.

For starters, there are the traits.

It should be known that even in the long-standing history of Grand Ye, let along Heaven-rank, never has there ever been a recorded case of an Earth-rank innate trait. The most powerful trait recorded, from some decades ago, was of a High-Mortal ranked Beast Inheritance within one of the other clans. Even the thought of there being Earth and Heaven-rank innate traits out there is considered mere speculation.

Then, there are the cultivation manuals.

Although Mortal-rank and Earth-rank are right beside one another, one must know that the difference between them is truly vast. Even the gulf between High-Mortal and Low-Earth is considerable. Many of those Earth-rank cultivators out there were only able to reach their current level through decades of cultivating a Mortal-rank art. Within Grand Ye, only within the great clans and major sects can one hope to find an Earth-rank cultivation manual. Even the Zhang Clan, mighty as it is, only has a handful of Earth ranked cultivation arts.

Finally, the innate techniques.

If the gap between Mortal-rank and Earth-rank cultivation manuals can be considered a lake, then the gulf between such ranked innate techniques must be an ocean. The difference in Qi consumption, utility, and sheer power output. In no way can these two ranks be considered similar. The same can be said to apply regarding the tiers within the ranks. In no way can a Low-Mortal ranked technique compare to one that is High-Mortal ranked -excepting, of course, a vast enough difference in the power and capability of the users

Although High-Earth ranked innate techniques are not beyond the bounds of reason for Grand Ye, the High-Mortal ranking is still considered impressive for a technique. In the Zhang Clan, a High-Mortal ranked technique would only be known by the clan head, the various elders and the most trusted members of the clan. Just gaining access to one would cost the average person a few years worth of contribution tokens. Most guards and servants would have to satisfy themselves with just a Mid-Mortal ranked technique.

Now that the importance of these rankings is understood, one can then understand why Zhang Tian's heart skips a beat when he notices a different tier of ranks beside some techniques. Ranks that Zhang Tian has never even heard of before. Immortal-rank and Divine-rank.

Implications regarding the peaks of cultivation aside, this simple fact is actually a form of proof regarding his earlier conjecture. Combined with the knowledge that there are actually nine cultivation realms and his earthborn memories, this serves as the final piece of proof that there is a vaster world outside of Grand Ye. A dangerous one at that.

After all, it's recorded fact that with only a Mid-Earth rank cultivation art and a Low-Heaven rank innate technique, the ancestral founder of Grand Ye was able to slaughter his way through countless spirit beasts and rival cultivators in order to carve out a kingdom for himself. This is the same battle that leveled most of the eastern region of the country and left it a barren waste that has yet to recover these thousands of years later. If such a man was capable of that level of destruction, what of those that cultivate Immortal or Divine ranked techniques? What of spirit beasts of that equivalent ranking? Dangerous might just be understating it.

'But… I was already expecting this, wasn't I? The moment I awoke with these memories, I was already thinking of Grand Ye as nothing more than the backwater nation of a much vaster world.'

Rather than frighten him, this glimpse into the sort of world lying outside of Grand Ye instead fills Zhang Tian with resolution.

'One day. One day I will venture outside of Grand Ye and see with my own eyes all that this world has to offer.'

Full of determination, Zhang Tian turns the full weight of his focus onto making a selection from the rewards offered by the system. This is but the first step in achieving his dream.

The Mortal and Earth-rank innate traits are all immediately ignored after a short glance. Most are simply weaker versions of the Heaven-rank traits available, while the ones that are original can't hope to compete with those Heaven ranked traits. Though the list is much shorter without those weaker traits -and those too powerful to be chosen- Zhang Tian still finds it difficult to choose.

For a moment, he is tempted to select the Pure Yang Body trait. This is pushed by the parts of his psyche that are earthborn. Ever since waking that day, Zhang Tian has been… disappointed with his physical form. Though his body is considerably fit from years of general exercise and basic martial arts training, he would never go so far as to describe himself as 'manly'. Too thin, too soft, and with features that tread far too close to the effeminate side of the androgyny line, his current appearance is a far cry from the thick, muscular frame he'd earned from years of general labor on Earth. His first impression upon looking in the mirror that fateful morning was 'beanpole pretty boy'. A Yang type body would go a long way to changing that.

Though the choice is unbearably tempting -even with the weakness to Yin type effects- Zhang Tian eventually decides to go with the Resolute Soul trait. All of the traits are enticing enough but it is this one that truly calls to him. Though the description is fairly vague, Zhang Tian understands one thing that sets this trait a step above the others; it strengthens the soul.

Trauma regarding his soon to be repaired birth defect aside, Zhang Tian is knowledgeable enough about cultivation to know that a strong soul is a priceless commodity. A strong soul can provide all manner of benefits to a budding cultivator. After all, it is the soul that provides half of the energy required to cultivate. With a stronger soul, ones cultivation path would be smoother. Qi manipulation would come easier; their Qi would hold more 'weight'; and they would be able to show greater resistance to the suppression from stronger cultivators, a feat that would pay immeasurable dividends.

Out of all the available choices, Resolute Soul is the one that stands out as most important to him in the short term. Likely it would be expensive to get it later on, and less useful at that point, so he may as well snatch it up now that it is being handed out for free.

Locking in the choice, Zhang Tian moves on to the cultivation manuals.

A great deal of time passes as Zhang Tian makes his way through the various cultivation arts available to him. Even though he is limited to Earth-rank and below this time, there are still more cultivation manuals available than there were traits. If Zhang Tian is to select the best one from among them, he must carefully parse through the summarized information provided by the system. It doesn't help that many of these manuals also have higher grade supplements that he must also consider while choosing. Luckily for Zhang Tian, his interactions with the system occur at the speed of thought. So while it feels like several hours have passed to the young man, it has barely been a full hour.

Within the many cultivation manuals, Zhang Tian spots a number that he recognizes from both the clan archive and from his reading. He finds the Mid-Mortal ranked 'Mountain Bearing Giant Ape' art practiced by Cho Mang. Then the Low-Earth ranked 'World Illuminating Golden Sun' art practiced by his father. Even the legendary, Mid-Earth rank 'Slaughtering Warlord' art of the country's founder. Yet, for each manual that he recognizes -even if it's just by name alone- there are a dozen more that he doesn't. After a while, it gets really frustrating trying to pick and choose between them all. Dozens of subjective hours pass before Zhang Tian manages to parse through all the manuals and begin making his choice.

A vast majority of the manuals are immediately discarded for one reason or another. Some are too weak to be worth the bother. Some require the committing of acts so evil and vile that the thought alone makes him want to vomit. Others are just too difficult for him to cultivate as he is now. Yet, for each one he discards, there are still three more that call out to him. Truly frustrating.

Idly, Zhang Tian pages through the remaining arts while thinking. Every once in a while, he stops to reread the description of an interestingly named art before quickly moving on. Time passes in the outside world as Zhang Tian flips through the cultivation arts, carefully considering which to keep and which to discard. The moon is high in the sky by the time the young teen manages to finally narrow things down to one choice; The High-Mortal ranked 'Lesser Universal Body' art.

While he is eligible for a High-Earth ranked art, Zhang Tian finds that none of them are really suitable for him to choose. A vast majority of them require him to first step into the second realm of cultivation before he can even begin to cultivate them. Those are the good ones. The ones that don't have the requirement are only marginally better than the Mortal-rank cultivation arts themselves. So, if that is the case, then there is no point in him selecting an Earth-rank cultivation manual now when he can't use it until much, much, later.

Sure, he can just take the free Earth-rank manual now and train himself up to the Core Formation realm using a cultivation art from the clan's archive, but considering that all of the techniques he recognizes within the store are among the…. trashiest? Well, cultivation requires a strong foundation. Knowingly choosing an inferior art to build his foundation from doesn't really sit well with him.

So, Zhang Tian decides to select the Lesser Universal Body art which ranks around the top among the various High-Mortal ranked cultivation manuals. Even better, this particular art is only considered Mortal-rank because it focuses solely on body refinement. If there was even the slightest hint of complex Qi cultivation within the art, it could instantly rank up to High-Earth or even Low-Heaven. Thankfully, whoever created this art decided to split it into multiple parts; the Lesser, which is only Mortal-rank but can be effectively trained all the way to the second or third realm of cultivation; the Greater, which is Heaven-rank; and the True, which is Divine-rank. It is essentially a series of cultivation arts that one can train to the very limits of cultivation.

So, without a seconds thought, Zhang Tian locks the choice in. Finally.

Just the innate technique now and he can move on from this introductory phase of the system. Thankfully, this selection is much easier. The easiest of the three actually. Not only is he already limited to Mortal-rank techniques, but he can also completely ignore those ranked below High-Mortal. As stated earlier, there is a vast difference between even the small tiers of innate techniques. Selecting a Low or Mid ranked technique when a High ranking technique is available can only serve to weaken him.

While parsing the list, he spots a number of recognizable names. There is Cho Mangs' Low-Mortal ranked 'Shattering Fist' technique. The Zhang clan's prized, High-Mortal ranked 'Earth Rending Shallow Step' technique. And again, the legendary, Low-Heaven ranked 'Erasing Spear Art' of the Ye country founder. There are so many techniques within the list. Some, he has only heard of in stories of ancient times, while others seem far too fantastical to be real.

After a while, Zhang Tian notices that he is just wasting time flipping through, and looking at, the various techniques rather than focusing on what he should be doing. Snapping back to attention with a soft chuckle, he immediately returns to the section of High-Mortal ranked techniques. Now back on track, Zhang Tian spends a few minutes flipping through the various techniques before settling on the 'One Palm Advances, A Thousand Strike' palm technique.

A movement technique may have been a better option but the clan already has a High-Mortal ranked one he can learn. There are quite a few better ones within the store but the Earth Rending Shallow Step is not much worse off. As for learning a defensive art, his cultivation art would actually cover that nicely. Done correctly, very few techniques within this rank would be able to compare to the defensive capabilities of his chosen cultivation art, and while the effects could stack, there's very little chance of him facing an enemy powerful enough to require that level of defense anytime soon. Any such enemy would be capable of killing him regardless. Besides, he could also buy a defense-oriented art from the system later if needed, or look through the clan archive for one. Better to get an offense-oriented art.

Especially since he hasn't forgotten what the system said earlier.

Killing enemies to generate points isn't a new concept to him. Not after all of the stories he has already read with such a premise. It's quite likely he'll have to hunt down and kill Spirit Beasts in order to earn those points. If this happens to be the case, then having a powerful attack could prove to be most invaluable.

As for the particular technique in question... well, this is a cultivation world is it not? Aside from sword techniques and Sword Qi, there is nothing more iconic to the setting than the palm strike. And among the various palm arts, there is none better seeming than the 'One Palm Advances, A Thousand Strike' innate technique. A highspeed series of palm strikes that allow the user to strike the target a thousand times in an instant. The sheer insanity of the technique has Zhang Tian selecting it right away.

Sure, it's not as iconic as the 'Thousand Palm Shadows' technique, which uses afterimages to hide the true attack but it is certainly more powerful. A thousand strikes, no matter how light, will surely beat out a single solid strike. Besides, he'll need to eventually learn both techniques to unlock the Earth-rank 'Ten-Thousand Palms Descent' technique. For now, Zhang Tian is satisfied with his selected technique.

With his final choice locked in, Zhang Tian waits as the system verifies his choices. A few seconds pass, then...

Selection Finalized.

This system hopes you enjoy your choices user. Please work hard to grow stronger and unlock more features of this system.

Introduction Complete.
Implementing Changes To Host.

!!Warning!!

Host, you may feel a slight amount of discomfort as changes are made to your body….

'Discomfort? What sort of discomfort?' Zhang Tian wonders as the system trails off. A moment passes before the young teen suddenly pales. Sweat forms on his brow and he gulps, having recalled a particular story with a similar system. Discomfort was usually an understatement of what the main character of that story had to suffer through.

'Hey.. uh, System. This won't hurt right?'

Worry not host! This great and gentle system will ensure you are not disturbed during the repair and elevation process!

'That didn't answer my que-'

Zhang Tian is cut off mid-thought as his entire world dissolves into pain. His mouth opens to scream but no sound is made. Within his mind, Zhang Tian wants to writhe and flail about from the sheer agony he is currently experiencing, but something has paralyzed his body. The system isn't allowing him any actions that would draw attention from those outside. All he can do is lay there and suffer.

A sensation spreads through his whole body. As if a million-billion red-hot needles are being stuck into each and every one of his nerve endings. His heartbeat rockets to insane levels, pumping streams of liquid ice torturously through his veins. Countless hands of molten steel seem to rip and tear through his flesh to grab directly onto his bones, the sensations of heat and cold clashing in a manner suitable to drive one mad. Then, the hands begin to twist.

If one was to enter Zhang Tian's room at this moment, they would immediately pale at the sound of loud cracks and squelches, as bones and flesh are destroyed and reformed. If they were to throw back the blanket, they would immediately vomit. Not even Cho Mang would be able to recognize Zhang Tian from the pile of tenderized flesh and pulped bone laying on the bed, the blood and viscera held together by an invisible force.

Thankfully for the young man in the center of all this, the pain has long driven him unconscious.

Hours pass as the system is left to its process.

A1C4: Receiving Rewards (2).

In a Cultivation World with a Cheat System.
Arc One: The Clan Zhang.
Chapter Four: Receiving Rewards Cont.

XxxOxxX

Several hours pass before Zhang Tian regains consciousness. The young teen wakes with a groan, his hands immediately rising to rub his temples.

'Ugh, what happened? Why does my head hurt so much.' Zhang Tian wonders, attempting to rub the pain away. Surprisingly, it works. As the seconds go by, the pain in his head lessens.

With a sigh of relief, Zhang Tian sits up on the bed and looks around. The sky outside his window is dark but appears to be lightening, dawn will be here soon.

"This is… my bed? Where is Cho Mang? When did we retu-"

With his headache fading, Zhang Tian begins to remember. The system appearing; the journey back to the clan compound; his rewards and choices: the pain. Everything comes flooding back in a torrent that has the teen groaning once more as his head falls into his hands.

"Heavens damn you, you accursed system. This is what you call a 'slight discomfort'?"

Reporting to the host,

This mighty system has repaired and improved the host's body! Any discomfort felt was due to the degree of changes required to bring the host's body up to a suitable level.

A warning was given. It is not the fault of this generous system that the host is unable to handle such minor discomfort.

A moment passes as the young teen parses through the reply. His hands clench into tight fists as a wave of fury warps his face in an unsightly manner.

"So, you're saying it's my fault for being too weak to handle the pain? To handle having my bones crushed and my flesh torn apart? Is that it?"

That is correct.

For a moment, Zhang Tian looks ready to scream. Every facet of his being looks ready to rage and murder. Ready to tear everything within sight apart in order to sate his fury. The room is thick with killing intent. The moment passes. Rather than act on these feelings, Zhang Tian simply takes a deep breath and exhales. His eyes close and his lips can be seen moving as he counts the passing seconds.

Only after reaching a count of thirty does he open his eyes again. The rage that filled them just a minute ago is gone, instead replaced with a forced indifference.

"Hur Hur. What a good system you are. Then, this lowly one apologizes for his weakness."

This merciful system accepts your apology and offers thanks for the compliment.

Another deep breath and exhale leads to another thirty count, this time accompanied by the low sound of grinding teeth.

"That was sarcasm. I would think such a great system as you claim to be would be able to tell."

This intelligent system does not dabble in such base forms of communication.

Host, it is requested by this loving system that you sharpen your wits if you are to succeed at becoming a top-tier cultivator.

"...."

XxOxX

A few minutes of incredulous silence later, Zhang Tian is finally able to take stock of the changes the system has made to his body. The first-

"System, what is this filth?"

-is, of course, the layer of black gunk that coats his body and is staining his sheets. The substance smells absolutely foul and has a consistency similar to molasses. He is covered from head to toe in the filth, leaving him feeling quite uncomfortable.

This 'filth', as you have so eloquently put it, host, is the accumulated impurities that have been purged from your body.

"Impurities?" Zhang Tian mutters, looking at the black substance in a new light. "You cleared my body of impurities?"

Incorrect, host. This virtuous system has cleaned your body and soul of impurities. This is a side-effect of the Full Body and Soul Repair Service.

The young man's eyes widen in astonishment at the reply.

"Then… does that mean I've already broken through to the intermediate stage of the Body Refinement realm?"

Though he was previously unable to cultivate, Zhang Tian has picked up some knowledge regarding what is required to progress through the first four realms. As such, he knows that to break through the bottleneck of the Early-stage of the Body Refinement realm, a cultivator needs to use their Qi to cleanse the body of impurities. Impurities, in this case, is a build up of Heaven and Earth Qi within the body.

The Qi of Heaven and Earth is in everything within this world. The plants and minerals, the water and animals, even the air is rich with Qi. Whenever a person eats, drinks and breaths, they take in small amounts of this Qi, and with it, the Laws laid down by the heavens. This Qi primarily accumulates in the meridians and acupoints, creating blockages that limit the flow of vital energies through the body.

To cultivate is to go against the heavens. It is to throw away the shackles of heavenly law and ascend to a higher existence. Thus, to begin cultivating, one must first cleanse their body of the Laws buried within its very flesh. They must flush the build up from their system, allowing Life and Soul energy to flow freely. This is the Early-stage of the Body Refinement realm, the first step on the long road of cultivation.

It is a process that can take many years to complete.

So, one can understand Zhang Tian's shock at the revelation. If the system has cleansed his body of its impurities already… then, doesn't that mean he has broken through the Early-stage of the Body Refinement realm in one go? What kind of cheat is that? Even those famous geniuses required at least six months to breakthrough to Intermediate-stage Body Refinement.

Incorrect again host.

The host's body has been repaired to its optimal state but due to the host's lack of cultivation, the host is unable to achieve a breakthrough.

It is highly probable, however, that the host will be capable of proceeding through the Early-stage of the Body Refinement realm at a hastened pace.

Host, it is recommended that you begin cultivating as soon as possible. Deterioration of the host body and build up of impurities is an ongoing process.

Though the reply is in the negative, Zhang Tian is still in high spirits. What the system says makes sense actually. There is no Mortal Qi in his body. No lingering power to keep the Qi of Heaven and Earth from reentering his system. Without cultivating and creating his own Qi, how can he possibly breakthrough? So, his circumstance can be considered unique. He is not yet a cultivator. At best, he can be considered an adolescent male with the physical purity of a newborn child.

Regardless of this, Zhang Tian is still happy. After all, the system has removed close to sixteen years of build up from his system. It will take just as much time to rebuild those stores of impurities. He could put off cultivating for the next decade and still start with a leg up. Where others have to crawl to take their first steps into the world of cultivation, Zhang Tian could just sprint right through.

XxOxX

The second change Zhang Tian takes note of, is the difference with his body. Likely, this is tied to the first matter.

Standing from the filth stained bed, Zhang Tian makes his way towards the wall mirror beside the chest of drawers containing his various clothes and accessories. As he walks across the room, the teen catalogs a number of differences in his body. His movements feel lighter; effortless even, as if gravity has less of a hold on him than it once did. His breaths come easier, air flowing in and out of his system with nary a sound. All sorts of pain and discomforts have disappeared, the sort of things he didn't even notice until they suddenly became absent

Everything feels… odd.

Reaching the mirror, Zhang Tian activates the crystals lining it with a touch of his hand and a flex of will. A soft glow fills the room, allowing the teen to take in his appearance…

'Ewww…'

Moving 'take a bath' higher up on his list of priorities, Zhang Tian ignores the black filth covering him. Instead, he focuses on the flesh below. There is… very little different actually. Despite knowing his own appearance quite well, it takes Zhang Tian a number of seconds before he can even spot a difference. He looks pretty much the same as he did before turning the lights off. Still, there are a few changes that manage to stand out.

His muscles seem more defined. They're no bigger than they were before, just… more apparent. The minor baby fat from his cheeks is also gone, his face is less 'soft pretty boy' and more 'fit pretty boy'. Not a huge difference, but an appreciable one nonetheless. His eyes also seem to be a shade darker, leaning more towards emerald green than their original pale green. Then again, it could just be a trick of the light. Hard to tell really.

All in all, the changes seem to be more internal than they are external. Thank heavens. Anything too blatant would be quite difficult to explain.

Zhang Tian spends a few minutes more looking his appearance over before giving up. If there are any more changes to his appearance, they are far too subtle for him to notice. Instead, the teen turns his attention inward. With his introduction to the system complete, the main screen of the Supreme Cultivation System is now available to him.

Supreme Cultivation System (ver 3.46)

Wisely choosing to ignore that little tidbit at the end, for down that way likely lies madness, Zhang Tian reads on.

Host Level: Uninitiated Cultivator.
System Points: 200.

[Inventory]

1x {Lesser Universal Body} cultivation manual.
1x {One Palm Advances, A Thousand Strike} technique.

"Hm. That explains why I didn't get an info dump of my chosen rewards already. System, what is the inventory? How does it function?"

Zhang Tian could feel the hope burning in his chest as he waited for an answer. Although they are widely known of, interspatial storage items are extremely rare within Grand Ye. Only the top tier cultivators could be expected to have one, the construction of the items being so intricate that few could afford one. If the system could also act as a high tier storage item for him…

The system inventory is a limitless storage dimension where the host can store all manner of items and goods. Items may be withdrawn at any time and will appear wherever the host wishes on their body.

Time does not pass within the storage dimension so the host does not need to worry about the wellbeing of any living plants or beasts stored within the inventory.

Zhang Tian feels like cheering.

Host, please note that only items purchased from the store can be placed in the inventory. Non-system items are forbidden.

Zhang Tian feels like crying.

'Damn. So much for that. Well… system, do you sell interspatial items within the store?'

Yes, host.

'Right, not so bad then, I'll have to check on those later.'

Back in high spirits, Zhang Tian continues reading.

[Traits]
[Cultivation Manuals]
[Innate Techniques]
[Arts]
[Beasts]
[Resources]
[Weapons]
[Armor]
[Tools]

[Sell]

The contents of the various sections are self-explanatory enough and massively expansive. Zhang Tian can only blink in shock as the full list of the store's stock appears within his sea of consciousness. At the speed of thought, he begins flicking through the millions of individual items available. He doesn't even pause to read names or descriptions, he just flips through from section to section. Over ten minutes later, he isn't even close to being a quarter of the way through the full inventory.

Zhang Tian shudders.

'Whatever this system is, whoever created it, they are so far above me. What purpose is there in giving this system to me?'

Knowing no answer will be forthcoming, Zhang Tian returns his attention to the store. This time, he looks for those items he can recognize.

Once again, Zhang Tian is shocked into silence.

He finds many items within the shop that he recognizes, some from his books and others from within the clan. Cultivation pills and weapons, alchemy tools and formation flags, weapons and armor. Each and every single one that he finds is comparable to trash within the eyes of the store.

For example, there is the 'Turpidity Flushing Pill'. This is a highly regarded cultivation pill that is vital for cultivators in the first realm. It is extremely difficult to craft but is also the specialty of the Zhang clan's third elder. A single batch of this pill is sold to several different people each month, each batch selling for hundreds of thousands of silver coins. It is one of the main sources of income for the clan.

The shop is selling a batch of ten for one system point.

More than that, it's not even a good deal since he can just buy a batch of the much better 'Turpidity Cleansing Pill' for ten points. Considering the fact that a single Turpidity Cleansing Pill can be taken in one go, for over twenty times the effect of the weaker pill yet with the same digestion time, the difference is quite noticeable. And that's not even the best pill within the cheap items.

As he looks through the other sections and finds more of the same comparisons, Zhang Tian begins to understand just how low down the totem pole his clan and the rest of Grand Ye must be. If even the trash items from the store can be considered priceless treasures here, what must the lands outside Grand Ye be like?

Sighing once more, the teen continues flipping through the system store until something catches his eye.

Small Ring of Interspatial Storage (Low-Mortal).
A rune inscribed ring that allows the owner to store items within an airless pocket dimension. This item has a limited number of uses before it breaks and expels everything stored within.
Storage Space: 10 chi* x 10 chi x 10 chi.
Remaining uses: 100/100.
Cost: 150 points.
Sell: 15 points.

*1 chi = 33 ⅓ cm. 10 chi = 3 ⅓ m. Using the chi unit because 10 chi translates to 1 zhang. Better to avoid that issue.

"Hsss."

Hissing at the high price for such a generally useless item, the teen slouches and dismisses the store windows. He could certainly afford it, but that would be a third of his current points gone in one go. For an item with limited use that he doesn't even need… yes, it's not worth the price. Better to wait until he needs, and can afford, a much better ring. Preferably, one with a larger storage space and longer shelf life.

That said…

"System, how exactly do I gain more points?"

There was mention of killing earlier but surely that can't be the only way...

There are a number of ways for the host to generate system points. The first, and easiest, is to strive to become a top tier cultivator. This caring system will watch over you, host, and will award you points if you perform deeds that are satisfactorily impressive.

"...what does that entail?"

The second method-

"Of course you won't tell me, that would be too easy right?"

-is by slaying enemies of sufficent power. Slaying spirit beasts with an equal or greater cultivation base to the hosts' will generate a number of points for the host to spend. Slaying Cultivators with an equal or greater cultivation base to the hosts' will generate a greater number of points. The greater the difference between the host's cultivation base and that of the slain foe, the more points that are awarded.

"Right, I was expecting that one."

Lastly, the host may exchange certain resources for points. Exculded are cultivation manuals and technique scrolls. The host may exchange any weapons, armor, tools, pills, and e.t.c for points so long as the items contain Qi. Exchanged items are valued at a tenth of their purchase price for those worth ten points or more. Those worth less have no value.

Zhang Tian frowns. Going by those rules, he doesn't really have anything of value to trade. Some of the cultivation manuals and technique scrolls within the clan archive would have value but the system doesn't accept them. Which makes sense actually, otherwise he could just have numerous copies of the scrolls written up and exchanged for points. As for the weapons, pills and such, short of the most valuable items in the clan treasury, everything available to him is valued at less than ten points by the system. Loving or not, there's no way his father would let him 'disappear' such valuable items for no noticeable benefit to the clan.

Short of picking up a profession and eventually making items valuable enough to be worth points, or leaving Grand Ye for more prosperous lands, Zhang Tian might be out of luck with this method.

Additionally, the host may also exchange the Cores of slain spirit beasts for a set price. The cores of beasts purchased from the system do not count for this sevice.

Or maybe not.

A Beast Core is a crystal of solidified Qi that forms within the body of a spirit beast upon death. It contains a sizeable portion of the Qi accumulated over the beast's lifetime. As they are an essential reagent for some advanced cultivation pills, as well as a cultivation aid due to the raw energy stored within, beast cores are generally quite valuable. There are always those thrill seeking adventurers and poor cultivators willing to hunt Spirit Beasts for profit. Zhang Tian could easily buy a number of such cores with his savings, more if he asks his parents for aid.

All in all, this plus the second method are his only way of earning points at this time. Whatever the system means with that first method will just have to wait to be seen. For no-

*Knock. Knock.*

"Young Master, it is time to wake up."

The knocking and soft voice from the door jars Zhang Tian from his thoughts. The teen looks around in surprise. Unknowingly, he has been in thought for hours now. The sun in aready rising and dawn has long passed. Shaking his head clear, Zhang Tian turns towards the closed door.

"Thank you Yue-Dajie, I'm awake."

The voice at the door is a clan servant by the name Guo Yue, or Elder Sister Yue as Zhang Tian has come to address her. Guo Yue has been his personal maid for close to seven years now. The woman is over two decades older than him with average looks and a plump form. She is also his second guard, a skilled cultivator nearly on par with Cho Mang, hiding in the guise of a simple maid. Well, he says hiding but the woman takes her duty seriously. If Zhang Tian wasn't made aware of her prowess, he'd think her a simple maid too.

"Do you require anything else young master?"

"Yes, prepare water for a bath.."

Zhang Tian pauses, looking down at his filth stained form in disgust.

"Make that two baths… and new sheets. I seem to have stained these ones with filth from the wild."

"It will be done."

"Thank you."

A moment passes before Zhang Tian picks up the sound of retreating steps. The teen releases a sigh at that. Two weeks may not seem like a short amount of time but compared to six years of routine, it may as well be two seconds.

Before his transmigration, Zhang Tian had a set morning routine. He would be woken up by Guo Yue removing the sheets from his bed and then shaking him awake when that didn't work. After that, the woman would bathe him, dress him, then escort him to breakfast in the main hall. The typical morning routine of a noble scion.

The new Zhang Tian immediately put a stop to that.

Before his awakening, he'd seen it as a normal routine that someone of his station was allowed. After, he saw it as the pampered upbringing of a lazy, useless twit. Unable to bathe and dress himself without aid? How shameful. Zhang Tian immediately ordered Guo Yue to stop aiding him in such basic matters, choosing to handle them himself. The maid was, of course, off kilter and a tad sceptical but when he woke up the next morning to a simple knock on the door and proceeded to handle his abulations himself, she could only accept it.

Still, two weeks later and she is still pausing at the door as if expecting him to regress to such a lazy lifestyle. Well, she would be in for a surprise after today. The whole clan would be.

'Which raises the question… what the am I going to tell everyone?'

The changes within him might not be noticeable now but what about after he starts cultivating? What about after Mortal Qi saturates his whole body and he begins to exude that oh-so-noticeable presence of a cultivator? Well, there would certainly be questions raised. Questions that may lead to answers such as 'imposter', 'infiltrator', and 'possession', if they're not dealt with right away.

So… how exactly is he going to explain this?

How will Zhang Tian explain his changed state?
[][Explanation] A grandpa did it!
Cultivation is a long and boring process. Sometimes, one needs to find a way to let off steam. Weirdly enough, some cultivators of advanced age seem to enjoy finding young and impressionable minds to wow with their mysterious, mystical powers.
You say some old man approached you in the woods, fixed you crippling illness and left while talking about 'Karmic Balance' and 'Fate'? Sounds totally plausible! In fact, you're probably the fifth reported case this month. These sorts of things are embarrassingly common.

[][Explanation] Found something weird.
Despite their meticulous nature and draconic attitude towards hoarding treasure, most cultivators seem to have a strange habit of leaving heavenly treasures lying around.
You say you found a strange looking artifact that released a pulse of energy when you touched it, fixing your crippling illness? I'd buy that. Do you still have it? No, it disappeared in a flash of light? I expected as much, oh well.

[][Explanation] Ate something weird.
World Qi does weird things to plants. Weirder than what it does to animals, and yes, that includes the Class Six Platypus beast.
You say that you ate some weird herb that upset your stomach but somehow also fixed your crippling illness? Psh, stop wasting my time with such mediocre news and go cultivate before the damn thing finishes its trip through your digestive system.

[][Explanation] Had a weird dream.
Reincarnation is a thing. Sometimes, one reincarnates with memories of their past life.
You say you had a weird dream where you were watching the life of someone that looked exactly like you, and when you woke up your crippling illness was cured? Good, good. Say, you didn't happen to see this other you burying some rare treasures somewhere close did you?

[][Explanation] Write in: the more detailed the cover story, the better.

In a Cultivation World with a Cheat System.
Arc One: The Clan Zhang.
Chapter Five: Meet the Parents (1).

XxxOxxX

[O] A grandpa did it!
-[O] Fed me a goldfish.

Two hours later, a clean and refreshed Zhang Tian finds himself standing within a small chamber beneath the Clan Head's manor. After repeating the tale he concocted for his parents, Zhang Tian was immediately rushed into this small room.

The room Zhang Tian stands within is ten paces long and wide. It is constructed of a dark colored stone that has been cut into multiple slabs. All along the walls, floor, and roof of the room, there are a number of arcane looking runes drawn on the material. From time to time, sections of these runic inscriptions will light up with a certain color, causing an aura of the same color to appear around Zhang Tian. The whole while, Zhang Tian stands in the center of the room with his eyes closed as he keeps a steady breath. Time passes slowly for the young teen but Zhang Tian simply allows his mind to wander as he thinks of the future.

Finally, after an unknown period of time, the small room is plunged into darkness as the runes lose their light. A few seconds pass before, with a quiet rumble, a section of the wall in front of Zhang Tian slides away to reveal a dimly lit hallway. Opening his eyes, Zhang Tian walks towards the revealed doorway with calm, measured steps. As he exits the small room, Zhang Tian's eyes land on the figures of two middle-aged men standing in the wide, stone-bricked hallway.

The first man is tall and wide shouldered. His face is clean-shaven, with dark green eyes that seem to exude a sense of pressure. He has short, black hair with a few streaks of gray at the temples. His expression is stern but Zhang Tian can note a hint of worry as the man looks him over.

This man is Zhang Hai, father of Zhang Tian and patriarch of the Zhang clan.

The second man is short and wiry, with darkly tanned skin. He has long gray hair, steely black eyes, and a soot-stained beard that hangs down to his chest. Spots of blackness and reddened skin decorate this man's hands and parts of his face, common signs of someone that works with explosively volatile materials.

This man is Zhang Nien, the third elder of the Zhang clan. He is also the Zhang clan's pride and joy, a three-star Alchemist of great renown.

In this world, there are a number of professions that only cultivators are able to take up. Spirit forging, inscription carving and pill mixing stand among the top of these few professions. Of them all, it is the pill mixing ability of the Alchemist that is the most well regarded. Being able to create pills and fluids that aid cultivation and healing, a capable Alchemist is a commodity that is sought by everyone. Within the great clans and sects, any member with a talent in alchemy will receive the full backing and support of their group. No measure is spared when it comes to nurturing an Alchemist.

Even then, those with the talent are quite rare. Pill mixing requires a great deal of skill in manipulating Qi, as well as an affinity for the Fire element; though the latter is not always required. As with everything else, there is a ranking system used in the various professions. A nine-star ranking system where one-star is the lowest and nine-stars is the best.

Within the Zhang clan, there are just over a dozen one-star ranked Alchemists, five two-stars, and a single three-star. Aside from them, there are a hundred and over apprentices working to earn their one-star ranking. This small number is already considered quite good. In the whole of Grand Ye, the highest ranking Alchemist is a five-star belonging to the Royal clan. Other than that, there are less than a thousand three and four-star rankers. The reason for this is the difficulty in advancing through the profession.

To become a one-star Alchemist, one just needs to be capable of creating a Qi flame in order to operate the pill cauldron and mix pills. This is an ability that requires the cultivator to be in the intermediate stage of the Core Formation realm at a minimum.

To advance to a two-star Alchemist, the cultivator needs to master over a thousand pill materials and show understanding on how these different materials can be correctly mixed. They must also be capable of crafting Mortal-rank pills with a failure rate higher than fifty percent. This is a stage that most Alchemists can easily reach with some years of training.

To advance to a three-star Alchemist, however, the cultivator needs to now branch out to other professions. A basic understanding of low-rank diagnostic type inscriptions and formations is absolutely required, both the manner in which to create them and the way to understand the results. The Alchemist also requires an intermediate level of mastery in medicine, as well as other matters concerning the body and soul. Lastly, they must have a fifty percent or higher success rate in crafting Earth-rank pills. This is a difficult rank to reach, only one in ten alchemists are capable of managing it, and the requirements for the ranks beyond this are no easier.

So, it can be understood why, upon hearing Zhang Tian's tale, Zhang Hai immediately summoned the third elder and escorted the two down to a preprepared scanning room. As the only three-star Alchemist in the clan, it is the third elder that handles any matters regarding pills and medicine beyond the basics. The third elder was also the one to investigate Zhang Tian's problems cultivating all those years ago, and he was the one that diagnosed the problem.

So, one can understand the look of utter astonishment on his face as he stares at Zhang Tian.

"Father, Third Elder." Zhang Tian greets, bowing to the two with all the grace and poise of a noble scion.

Zhang Hai offers a short nod in return before turning to Zhang Nien.

"Third Elder, how is it?"

Hearing the question, Zhang Nien seems to snap awake as he shakes his head clear. The look of flabbergast on his face is soon replaced with a warm smile as he looks on Zhang Tian.

"It's just as Xiao* Tian says, his Spiritual Roots have been completely repaired. Moreover, his soul has been strengthed to an unknown degree and his body purged of many years of accumulated impurities. It is as if I'm looking at a Zhang Tian that has cultivated for many years."

*Xiao mean little. An affectionate way of addressing someone.

Despite the good news, Zhang Hai still has a solemn look on his face.

"Are there any problems?"

Zhang Nien pauses to think, a frown appearing on his face as he falls into a deep thought. The father and son duo remain silent, giving Zhang Nien all the time he needs to recall the diagnostic information. Finally, after a few seconds of silence, he shakes his head.

"Nothing. The scans show no signs of any side-effects and whatever remains of the medicine, it left Xiao Tian's body with the impurities. This medicine… it not one I've ever heard of before."

Sighing, the elder turns to Zhang Tian. There is a hint of excitement in his eyes now, the thought of a new pill ingredient he has never heard of before igniting his passion.

"Xiao Tian, you say it looked like a fish?"

Zhang Tian nods.

"A goldfish, Third Elder. It was around the size of my hand and very plump. The scales shined in the light and the eyes looked like they still had life in them. When I went to cook it, the Senior told me to eat it raw instead. Only after that first bite did I discover that it wasn't a fish at all, it was a fruit with a sweet and juicy flavor."

This is, of course, a made up medicine that Zhang Tian has invented for his tale. No item like it exists in all of Ye Country but the description sounds close enough to some of those mystical spiritual fruits from ancient times that it is believable.

As for why Zhang Tian would even eat the strange fruit in the first place, neither of these two can even think to question it. For a powerful cultivator, dealing with a single Zhang Tian is as easy as turning their palm. There is no need for any trickery or lies, so why would Zhang Tian suspect anything about the fruit. At the same time, one must also show respect for their elders. Moreso when that elder is a powerful Senior offering strange food. If this unknown Senior was to appear before Zhang Hai or Zhang Nien and give them a strange fruit to eat, they would eat it right away.

It's just common sense.

"A fruit in the shape of a goldfish… why a goldfish? Prosperity and wealth?… and these sorts of effects, what would happen if I use it to mix that pill… or this one..."

As the third elder mumbles to himself in thought, Zhang Hai turns to Zhang Tian with a pleased look on his face.

"Tian'er, congratulations. Father is happy for you."

Knowing how much his son wished to cultivate all those years ago and being unable to cure his illness, Zhang Hai is immensely happy at his son's great fortune. There are, of course, some matters of worry but those are not things to burden his son with at this time. After all these years, the heavens have finally smiled upon his hardworking son.

"Thank you, Father."

"Tian'er, Father will spread this news for you. By the end of the day, everyone in Crimsonwood will celebrate for your good fortune."

Zhang Tian nods in acceptance, already understanding his father's train of thought. Something like this won't remain secret for long, not once he begins cultivating at least. Others are bound to notice eventually, so it is better for the Zhang clan to spread the news first and turn it into a matter of celebration. Moreover, something like this will do great things for the clan's reputation. Commoners that will only receive the basic information and rumors will talk about how the Zhang clan has recieved a blessing from the heavens. Meanwhile, those clans and groups that oppose the Zhang clan will have to tread carefully until they can learn more about this unknown Senior that may have ties to the Zhang clan.

Zhang Hai frowns, looking at a loss. Sighing, the older man claps a hand on Zhang Tian's shoulder. There is a glimmer of pride and happiness within his eyes as he looks upon his son.

"Ah, I suppose there is no need to look for a teacher. When it comes to these matters, Father can believe in Tian'er. Tomorrow, look for the Sixth and Eighth Elders. All those cultivation materials you haven't been able to use all these years, take them and use as you see fit. Come and find Father if you have any problems."

The sixth and eighth elders of the Zhang clan are, respectively, the overseers of the clan archive and resource allocation. Everyone in the clan has to go through them in order to receive cultivation manuals, innate techniques, and pills. As for the mention of a teacher; even being unable to cultivate all of these years, Zhang Tian is beyond the point where he needs such a person.

The path of cultivation is a long and solitary one. Every single cultivator has their own path to walk; their own comprehensions to make; their own Dao to decipher. Though it is possible to get some guidance while walking down this path, ultimately, one must walk alone if they wish to reach the peak of cultivation.

Cultivation might seem like a simple matter of using Qi to refine the body and soul, and truly it is like that at the beginning, but as one progresses further down the path, they will realize that there is more to it than that. To cultivate is to go against the heavens. How can one defy the heavenly laws with a paltry bit of energy and a strong body? The answer, they cannot.

To reach the peak of cultivation, one must strive to decipher the Dao of all things. They must comprehend the truth of the universe, and through this understanding, elevate themselves beyond the constraints of heaven.

The teachers Zhang Hai speaks of, are those experts that can be hired to pass on their own comprehensions regarding cultivation. Though it is impossible to guide another through their path, by listening to the comprehensions of other cultivators, one can gain insights into their own path. The help of a teacher can be invaluable to a budding cultivator.

Except, that stored within the archives of the Zhang clan, are the personal notes of countless generations of cultivators. With such a resource at his fingertips, how can the knowledge of a handful more people possibly help Zhang Tian?

Another job that is usually left for the teacher, is to help the student determine their Qi affinity. Be it for a certain element, or for a particular style of Weapon Intent, knowing the affinity of ones Qi can give immeasurable benefits while cultivating. By determining these things, the teacher can recommend suitable cultivation manuals and innate techniques for the student to focus on.

Again, it is a service that Zhang Tian does not require. Inside the Zhang clan treasury are all manner of Qi and Soul testing formation plates. Though it would be costly for a servant of the clan, getting his hands on one and checking his affinity is a simple matter for Zhang Tian.

The last matter that a teacher handles, is instructing the student in a number of different professions and hobbies. As stated before, the road of cultivation is unique for each person. Two people using the same cultivation art will always comprehend it in a different manner and at different speeds. This is a fact. As such, it can also be understood that not everyone can cultivate the same way. While sitting down to meditate works for many people, there are some that are unable to cultivate this way. Be it a matter of personality, their cultivation art or their Qi affinity, some people need to find unique ways to cultivate.

Some are better while active. Be it practicing a martial art, weapon style, or even a dance routine, these people find it easier to cultivate while their body is active. Others might need more calming activities. Playing an instrument, reading a book, or painting, these sorts of soothing activities can aid some people in achieving the proper mindset to drive their cultivation to its fullest. Methods will vary from person to person. The job of these teachers is to teach their students as many of these various activities as they can in order to pin down which one helps their cultivation speed the most. Because of this, most cultivators will have at least a basic level of mastery in a number of different professions and talents.

As the scion of a great clan, Zhang Tian has already gained instruction in all these activities and more. Though increasing his knowledge base has always been most important to him, Zhang Tian has achieved at least an initiate mastery level on a variety of different subjects.

If Zhang Tian was still young, Zhang Hai would consider hiring a teacher. Though there are many members in the Zhang clan, one needs experience when dealing with young and easily distracted minds. But Zhang Tian is no longer a child. He does not need to be treated carefully. He can be trusted to seek out aid should he need it and find information within the archives on his own. Ultimately, hiring a teacher for the current Zhang Tian would just be a waste of resources.

Zhang Tian nods in understanding of his father's words. As a son of the clan head, he is obviously allowed access to clan resources without the need for contribution tokens. It's just that in all these years, he has not been able to cash in on this privilege. Now that things have changed, Zhang Tian can go wild and choose as he pleases. Moreover, his age and maturity means that he won't face the limitations that a younger him would have faced.

"It's good that you understand. Now, go and find your mother before she continues to worry. Father will see you later."

"En."

With another bow to Zhang Hai and Zhang Nien, Zhang Tian makes his way down the hallway towards the distant stairs leading back into the manor. As Zhang Tian's form disappears from sight, all sign of emotion drains from Zhang Hai's face. Gone is the proud and loving father of Zhang Tian, replaced with the ruthless patriarch of the Zhang clan.

"Come out."

Although there is only the two of them there, Zhang Nien doesn't speak up in reply to the command. Instead, the shadowed wall just a few paces away from them seems to bulge before disgorging a third figure.

This figure is another middle-aged man. The man's skin is unnaturally pale as if he has not seen the light of day for many years. His hair is long and lanky, a wild mess that gives his bearded face a feral appearance. His eyes are hooded, allowing only a glint of glowing red pupils to be seen.

"Clan Head, Cousin." The man greets. His voice is low and raspy but the two men are able to easily hear his words.

"Huo'er, how have you been?" Zhang Nien replies, there is the trace of a smile on his face as he looks at this other man.

Zhang Huo shrugs in answer.

"Busy."

Zhang Hai frowns at that. It is true that Zhang Huo has been quite busy in recent years. This is not a good thing.

Publicly, it is known that the Zhang clan has eight elders. The elders of the Zhang clan are those experts that, after many decades of hard work, have stepped into the third realm of cultivation. The role of these elders is to help guide and protect the Zhang clan. While Zhang Hai has final say in all things, it is the elders that help run the day to day matters of the Zhang clan. Aside from the clan ancestor that is in seclusion, the eight elders are also the final defense of the Zhang clan.

What few know, though many clans and sects suspect, is that there are actually nine elders in the Zhang clan. Zhang Huo is the hidden ninth elder of the Zhang clan, not even Zhang Tian or his older brother know of his existence. Zhang Huo is the one that works in the shadows, gathering information and acting in matters where the Zhang clan cannot be involved. All the clans and sects have such a person, sometimes even groups of them, but there is one thing that sets Zhang Huo apart from the rest. By sacrificing his future cultivation and crippling himself in the early stage of the third realm, Zhang Huo is able to use an unparalleled stealth based cultivation art. This art is so effective that Zhang Huo can even spy on those hidden monsters in the other clans and sects. Within Grand Ye, none can equal Zhang Huo when it comes to stealth.

For the last few years, Zhang Huo has been gathering information on the movements of the Zhang clan's enemies. It is only recently that he has returned with some dire news.

"Ninth Elder, my apologies but it seems that I might have more work for you." Zhang Hai says with a sigh.

Zhang Huo doesn't say anything, though some emotion flares in his eyes. It should be known that the one thing this man enjoys is testing his skills. To seek out an unknown expert and spy on them, this will be quite enjoyable for him.

"Within the area of Crimsonwood City, other than our Zhang clan's ancestor, there is only the ancestor of the Five Peaks Harmony sect. You should know that old woman never leaves her mountain. Whoever this Senior is, you must discover it."

There is no doubt in any of their minds that the person Zhang Tian encountered is a powerful expert. The miraculous medicine aside; the tale spun by Zhang Tian was more than enough to convince them all. According to Zhang Tian, he woke in the middle of the night due to some sound and found an old man sitting beside the campfire. When Zhang Tian tried to wake Cho Mang, the older man wouldn't wake and continued to sleep peacefully. Suspecting the identity of the old man, Zhang Tian respectfully offered some tea and food. The old man accepted and after asking some questions about the Crimsonwood Forest to the south, he handed Zhang Tian the strange goldfish. The old man vanished mysteriously while Zhang Tian was eating the fruit.

As long and worrisome as the tale is, it's the part with Cho Mang that really stands out. As someone who has cultivated for so long, it's easy for Cho Mang to go many weeks without needing to sleep. Coupled with his training as a guard, it's impossible to believe that Cho Mang would sleep through something capable of waking Zhang Tian, let alone the young teen's attempts to wake him. For something like that to happen, it can only be the work of another party. For Cho Mang to succumb without even the slightest struggle, the other party must have some extraordinary means, or the raw power to suppress Cho Mang. Neither option can be ignored.

"Start with the Crimsonwood Forest, this Senior seemed to have some interest in it."

"Ah!"

Looking to have suddenly realized something, Zhang Nien makes a sound that draws the attention of the other two. Seeing their looks, Zhang Nien coughs before smiling sheepishly.

"Sorry, I just had a thought. How did the Senior know about Xiao Tian's illness? Assuming they are new in the area and didn't know about it beforehand, the only way they could have known is by diagnosing him on the spot. With no formation array. Which means…"

Zhang Hai feels a chill in his heart as he realizes what Zhang Nien is saying.

"Medical Saint."

The words hang in the air ominously as the three men contemplate things. Medical Saint, the title awarded to five-star Alchemists. With years of experience and a powerful spirit sense, a five-star alchemist can easily diagnose a patient with a single glance. The only five-star alchemist in Grand Ye is the ancestor of the Royal clan. For another to be walking the land…

Zhang Hai frowns.

"Ninth elder, be careful. If there is any chance this senior belongs to that power… don't do anything to antagonize them."

Receiving a nod from Zhang Huo, Zhang Hai turns away.

"I will go and inform the ancestor."

The other two bow as the clan head walks away. After a moment, Zhang Huo nods to Zhang Nien before vanishing into the shadows. Left alone, Zhang Nien can only sigh before following after Zhang Hai. As he walks, the elder can't help but ponder the properties of this mysterious medicine and what sorts of pills he could mix with it. A pity that Zhang Tian ate the whole thing.

'Tsk. That boy has always been too wasteful.'

In a Cultivation World with a Cheat System.
Arc One: The Clan Zhang.
Chapter Six: Meet the Parents (2).

XxxOxxX

Upon leaving the tunnels beneath the manor by way of a secret passage, Zhang Tian follows his father's advice and immediately seeks out his mother. As someone he has a close relationship with, Zhang Tian doesn't even need to think to know where he will find her. Worried as she is about her son's well-being, there is only one place his mother can be. With this thought in mind, Zhang Tian sets off through the halls of his childhood home.

The interior of the Zhang family manor is just as ostentatious as the exterior. Decorations of glimmering gold and sparkling silver fill the rooms. Paintings and calligraphy scrolls signed by famous masters adorn the walls. Rare and exotic spirit plants within vases of precious jade rest upon pedestals as mere decoration. The sheer wealth contained within this one building is a testament to the long and fruitful history of the Zhang clan.

Taking the quickest route possible, Zhang Tian exits the manor through a back door and enters into a large garden space. The flowers and plants within this garden have been meticulously arranged, the various colors and styles mixing together in perfect harmony. Simply gazing upon this careful arrangement of mundane plants is enough to calm the mind and instill tranquility. A number of stone pathways crisscross through the garden, arranged in such a way as to enhance the symmetry of the garden. In the center of all this, is a pavilion.

Tall, square, and teeming with vines and flowers, the building acts as the central focus of the whole garden. All the pathways lead to, and from, it, and the plants adorning it grants it the appearance of a large plant towering over all the rest. The arched windows of the pavilion allow the cool morning breeze to flow through. In the center of the pavilion is a small, round table with a number of seats pulled up to it. Seated in one such seat, is a figure that causes Zhang Tian to smile.

Tall, lithe and incomparably beautiful, the woman seated within that pavilion puts the meticulously cultivated beauty of the whole garden to shame. Her hair is long and silken, black, curled tresses that manage to perfectly frame her face; accentuating her warm brown eyes, narrow nose, and pouty red lips. The flowing dress she wears is exquisite in design, the patterns of winding vines and budding flowers coupled with the surrounding garden leads one to liken her to a goddess of nature. In one hand, she holds a small plate of polished, white glass. In the other, a pair of well-manicured fingers holds a matching teacup that is half filled with steaming tea.

This woman is Huang Yi, wife of Zhang Hai and Zhang Tian's mother.

Smiling wide at the sight of his mother, Zhang Tian hurries his way across the garden and into the pavilion. A warm, herbal scent fills his body as he nears the small table, and Zhang Tian sighs as a wave of relaxation flows through his entire body. Still smiling, Zhang Tian approaches the table and takes a seat.

"Mother."

One can easily hear the care and love contained within that single word. In this entire world, it can be truthfully said that there is no one Zhang Tian loves more than his mother. Not even his transmigrated memories have changed this fact. Huang Yi is a warm, caring woman that positively dotes on her children. Even when Zhang Tian went wild all those years ago and threw a tantrum, Huang Yi was always there with a soft smile and words of comfort. Even when dealing with others, regardless of status, Huang Yi acts in a kind and courteous manner. Despite her marrying into the clan, there is no one in the entire Zhang household that can be said to view Huang Yi in a negative manner.

"Tian'er." Huang Yi sighs, setting her cup down. There is a rarely seen frown on her face. The sheer worry contained within that single frown is enough to tear at Zhang Tian's heart. "How are you? What did the third elder have to say?"

"Ah.."

As he pours himself a cup of tea, Zhang Tian relates the third elder's words to his mother. As he speaks about the changes that have occurred within his body and what it can mean for his future, the frown on his mother's face doesn't vanish as Zhang Tian is expecting. Rather, it seems to deepen and shift. Finally, the tale is finished but his mother just sits there, looking increasingly worried.

"Mother? Is something wrong." Zhang Tian finally asks after a few minutes of silence. Of all the reactions he was expecting from his mother, this look of worry and conflict did not even come to mind.

The sound of his voice seems to draw her from her thoughts and his mother focuses on him with her saddened eyes.

"Tian'er, Mother is happy for you, truly. No one else knows how much you have wished for this." Huang Yi says, allowing a warm smile to show for a moment. "Mother is just worried. With matters in the clan as they are now, and your brother…"

Though she doesn't continue on, Zhang Tian nods in understanding. How can he not understand her concerns? After all, this is a matter the two have discussed much in past months. That being, the strife within the Zhang clan.

Although they are all one family, wholly united against all outside threats, there are still times of division within the Zhang clan. Many times, there will appear a matter that causes the clan to divide into warring factions. Though things are generally resolved peacefully, and resorting to bloodshed is forbidden, such times can cause a deal of stress and tension within the clan. The current dividing matter is the choice of the next generation's clan head.

In accordance with the rules of the Zhang clan, there is a limit to how long one can rule as the clan head. For the betterment of the clan, it is encouraged for the current clan head to step aside when a suitable successor appears. The former clan head can then act as a clan elder or enter seclusion, aiming to advance to a higher realm so that the clan can be further strengthened. This is a long-standing tradition within the clan, one that is fully honored.

Some months ago, before the personal upheaval of Zhang Tian's life, Zhang Hai announced his intention to enter seclusion soon and aim for a breakthrough into the Ascendant Mortal realm. To do this, he must first select a replacement clan head. This is where the current strife began.

Within the Zhang clan, any member of the clan's main branch can hold the position of clan heir and, eventually, become the clan head. The deciding factor is dependent on the person's natural talent and displayed ability. Right now, within the younger generation of the Zhang clan, there are three people with the capabilities to become clan head.

Currently, the first-in-line successor of the Zhang clan is Zhang Hua, Zhang Tian's older brother. A talented genius in cultivation, Zhang Hua is only twenty years old yet he already stands at the peak of the Core Formation realm. With the continued nurturing of the clan, it is possible for him to step into the third realm at any time and join the ranks of Ye Country's top experts before he is even thirty years old. With such prestige and talent, Zhang Hua is considered more than qualified to lead the Zhang clan in the future.

Of course, where there is a talented genius, there is also one capable of rivaling them.

Trailing close behind Zhang Tian's brother, are two others. The second-in-line successor is Zhang Mei, the daughter of the Zhang clan's first elder. Thirdly, is Zhang Min, the son of the seventh elder. Though they are both only around eighteen years old, the two are exceptionally talented and have also stepped into the upper stage of the Core Formation realm. With their displayed talent, and their parents drawing in support from their allies within the clan, each is able to stand up and fight for the clan head position.

Given the difficulties in stepping from one realm into another, it is also entirely possible for these two to catch up to Zhang Hua before he can enter the Core Ignition realm. Unless one of the three can pull themselves far enough ahead as to completely secure the position of clan head, the Zhang clan will remain divided into three factions. Though there is no open fighting allowed, tensions are still high within the clan and the fight for resources is fierce.

Then, there is Zhang Tian.

While his brother and cousins were off focusing on their cultivation, Zhang Tian was at home, expanding his knowledge base and management ability. His raw intellect and ability in this area has already been recognized, to the point that Zhang Hai and the elders are already considering handing the management of some of the clan's major businesses off to him despite his young age. It is fully expected for Zhang Tian to someday take over for the seventh elder in managing the clan's various businesses. Because of these displayed capabilities, there are many in the Zhang clan that would support the idea of Zhang Tian becoming the clan head. The skills and knowledge Zhang Tian has amassed are of the sort that a good clan head requires. While these things can always be picked up later in life, a person will always support a leader that is already knowledgeable and capable, over one that is just picking it up as they go. It is only Zhang Tian's inability to cultivate that keeps him out of the running.

Except, that Zhang Tian who is the most knowledgeable and educated among the younger generation, even in matters regarding cultivation, can now cultivate. More than that, he has also just consumed a medicine that will allow his cultivation speed to soar at a rapid pace. If Zhang Tian's intellect can also be applied to comprehending the Dao of Heaven and Earth, he could easily achieve a genius level of growth and burst forth as a dragon among men.

This is what Huang Yi fears, the appearance of a fourth faction centered around her youngest son. The sight of her two children clashing against one another, their years of love turned into a bitter rivalry. The very thought of it threatens to tear her heart in two.

Knowing of his mother's thoughts and concerns, what else can Zhang Tian do but smile and shake his head.

"Mother really doesn't need to worry about such things." The young teen chides, chuckling to himself.

Truthfully, Zhang Tian has absolutely no interest in fighting for the clan head position. The clan head position is something his brother has always strived for. Everything Zhang Hua has accomplished has been for this. For Zhang Tian to come out and state his intention to fight for the position, regardless of whether or not he can catch up in cultivation, would be a deep cutting betrayal. Unless he intends to tear his family apart, Zhang Tian cannot even think of fighting for the position of clan head

Further, Zhang Tian's dream is to see the world. His greatest wish is to explore the lands outside of Grand Ye. To lay eyes on wonderous and fantastical sights. To see the known limits of cultivation, and then exceed those limits. To become the head of the Zhang clan, Zhang Tian would have to first throw away this dream.

As with all members of the Zhang clan, Zhang Tian has a responsibility to the clan. He has a duty to see that the clan flourishes, that it remains a place of power and safety for all future generations. With the system, Zhang Tian can easily fulfill this responsibility. A treasure trove of rare resources and cultivation materials is at his fingertips, all he needs is the points to purchase them and the Zhang clan can easily rise to a level of unprecedented power within Grand Ye. Like this, Zhang Tian can fulfill his duty and leave the country with a clear heart.

This becomes impossible if he becomes the clan head.

The responsibility of a clan head, on the other hand, is eternal. No matter what contributions one makes, it will never be enough to fulfill their responsibility to the clan. To serve the clan until their dying breath is the duty of every clan head. To become the patriarch of the Zhang Clan, a mighty and prestigious position within Grand Ye, would be counter to Zhang Tian's dream.

"I will throw my full support behind Older Brother." Zhang Tian announces, his words filled with earth-shaking conviction. "No matter what anyone says, Older Brother will be the next clan head. I will ensure it."

For a moment, Huang Yi is shaken. Looking at this teen sitting across from her, Huang Yi is unable to recognize him. The sheer confidence in his posture. The resolution in his voice. The weight of his gaze. The Zhang Tian before her is a complete and utter stranger to Hiang Yi. The feeling of disconnect lasts for a single moment, then it fades and Huang Yi is left looking at her son. Pride wells up in her heart and the smile that appears on Huang Yi's face is blinding in its intensity.

"Ahh. You've really changed Tian'er. Mother sees that you are all grown up now." Huang Yi says, her mood completely lightened from what it was before. "If you say it will be so, then Mother will believe you. With your support, Hua'er may as well be clan head already."

Zhang Tian nods, joining in with his mother's infectious smile. Of course, he will say nothing to her about his plans for the future. The road of cultivation is a dangerous one. To reach the apex, one must wade through the blood, and climb over the bodies, of countless rivals and deadly beasts. To want to venture outside of Grand Ye, where he will be unable to call upon the protection of the Zhang clan, such a thought would cause nothing but worry for Huang Yi. Saying nothing is the best choice for now.

With this thought in mind, Zhang Tian relaxes back in his seat and takes a sip of his tea-

"Aiya, Mother only wishes things were simpler. That nosy old man…. It would have been so much simpler if your change in maturity was just from some fun play with a girl in the city."

"Hngrk."

-and chokes at his mother's comment. Ignoring her son's splutters, Huang Yi continues on with a teasing smile on her lips

"Of course, Mother would've had to kill any simple-minded trollop that thinks she can defile my baby boy."

"Mother!"

The sound of Huang Yi's titter rings through the garden, soothing the indignation in Zhang Tian's heart; though his cheeks retain their rosy blush. Before he can compose himself fully, Huang Yi stops giggling and continues on.

"Now, now Tian'er. You're no longer a boy, you really need to start thinking about marriage. And children. None of those hussies out there are good enough for my son, of course, but that won't stop them from trying."

"Mother. Please."

"You need to find yourself a good girl, a hardworking girl like Xiao Mei or Xiao Jingyi. Just say the word and Mother will arrange things."

Zhang Tian's groan goes unignored as his mother picks up a topic that he was hoping she'd long forgotten about. Hours pass like this, mother and son discussing matters of the future (one discussing, the other contemplating the merits of a quick death) before a third presence appears to interrupt them. Unfortunately for Zhang Tian, the addition of Zhang Hai just means he now has two concerned parties discussing the matter of his future marriage.

As the second born, Zhang Tian is granted the opportunity to marry for love. While Zhang Hua has been matched with a suitable partner from the moment of his birth, Zhang Tian is given the freedom to marry as he wishes; within limits, of course. Unfortunately, this also means his parents will often pester him about girls they find to be suitable matches. Such as the clan's genius beauty, Zhang Mei, or the daughter of the City Lord, Xun Jingyi.

Thankfully for Zhang Tian, the arrival of Zhang Hai is soon followed by that of servants bearing food and drink for an afternoon meal. The conversation soon changes to other, less important, matters as the three eat and once the meal is finished, both men are able to excuse themselves from the table. Leaving Huang Yi to her afternoon activities, father and son both entered the manor and make their way through the halls.

Walking side by side through the hall, Zhang Hai looks towards his youngest son. A hint of emotion seems to flicker through his eyes and he comes to a stop. Noticing this, Zhang Tian also slows to a stop and turns to his father with a questioning look.

"Xiao Tian… do you still plan to do like you wanted all those years ago?"

Zhang Tian freezes. Locking eyes with his father, Zhang Tian instantly understands what he means by those words. For a moment, a memory flashes through both of their minds. The memory is of a small boy seated upon an older man's lap, the boy is excitedly chattering on about his dreams of travel and adventure while the man simply smiles on.

Zhang Tian nods, causing Zhang Hai to sigh. A solemn look overtakes the older man's face and he stares the young teen down with eyes full of intensity.

"Tian'er, the world is a vast and dangerous place. There is still much that even you do not know. That you are not ready for. Within Grand Ye, you can run around and do as you want and no one can dare rebuke you, for you are a child of the Zhang clan. Outside of Ye Country, there is only danger. The outside world is a different place. All of those powerful cultivators and sects, they won't care who you are or where you come from. Out there, be it Ye Country or the Zhang clan, neither is worth even a fart."

Zhang Hai's expression is completely firm now, there is none of the softness and warmth normally reserved for his family. This is the first time Zhang Tian has ever had this side of his father, the patriarch of the Zhang clan, directed his way. It is a chilling experience.

Still, Zhang Tian stands firm and steady. His will is one of absolute resolution.

"If you wish to ever step outside of Ye Country, it will not be simple. You will require strength and power, my son, such that you can rival any top expert within the clan. Within the country. Anything less and you may as well give up on your dreams. If you step outside Ye Country without sufficient power, you will die without even knowing how.

Do you understand me Zhang Tian?"

Looking as solemn as his father, Zhang Tian nods and bows.

"Yes, Father."

Zhang Hai nods once before turning away.

"Things are different for you now, Tian'er. Before, you were just a child. A future manager for the clan perhaps, but still a non-entity to those that would care. Now, not so much. Your fortuitous encounter with that senior will buy you some time but not long. You are my son, your mother's child. Your brother is a genius and your own abilities have already been recognized.

The enemies of our clan will have to act eventually.

This world is a harsh place. You can no longer remain a child. You must cultivate well and grasp what strength you can. You must be prepared for the dangers ahead. Only then can you accomplish your dreams."

Sighing once more, Zhang Hai begins walking again. After a moment digesting his father's words, Zhang Tian rushes to follow. The hall is silent but for their footsteps, then…

"Father. The gathering in three months…"

As Zhang Tian trails off, looking to be gathering his thoughts, Zhang Hai frowns.

In three months time, the Zhang clan will be hosting its annual gathering. During this event, any young talent within the south region of Ye Country with a cultivation in the Body Refinement realm is invited to attend and show off their capabilities. If they manage to place well or show some impressive talent, the participants can win all sorts of prizes ranging from expensive, high-grade cultivation materials to the opportunity to even join the Zhang clan as an outer branch member.

Of course, none of these prizes matter to someone of Zhang Tian's standing. Aside from the opportunity to measure his progress and show off his ability in three months time, Zhang Tian is more interested in the special prize reserved for those members of the Zhang clan that manage to rank within the top three during the gathering. That being, the eligibility to leave the south region for the central region.

In Ye Country, the outer regions of the nation are actually the more barren parts of the nation. Guarded and administrated by the great clan or sect based in the region, the outer regions of Ye Country are considered 'wastelands' due to the low concentrations of World Qi, as well as the scarcity of high ranking Spirit Beasts and resources. The only reason these regions have any worth for cultivators is that each is bordered by a forbidden zone. That is, forbidden to those too weak to survive within. For the south region, this zone is the Crimsonwood Forest. Though the outer portions are relatively safe, the deeper one goes into the Crimsonwood Forest, the more danger they will face. Without a cultivation in the upper stage of the third realm, one can only dream about entering deep into the forest.

The central region, however, is a completely different place. Due to certain reasons, the Qi of Heaven and Earth tends to concentrate heavily in the central region. This abundance of dense Qi makes it an excellent location to cultivate. Not only that, but all sorts of secrets and treasures abound. The hidden tombs of past experts, the lairs of strong spirit beasts, the fields of rare spirit plants. The central region of Grand Ye is a vast land of opportunity.

As the primary territory of the royal clan and the location of the imperial city, the central region is also the place where all sorts of strong and important individuals flock. Be it the great clans, the sects, or the profession guilds, all those powerful groups have some manner of presence within the region. Because of this, all sorts of treasures and rare materials flow in and out of the central region.

The main point for Zhang Tian, however, is that the central region is also seen as a great tempering ground for the younger generation of the various sects and clans. Only after tempering oneself in the central region and establishing a reputation can one hope to join the ranks of the country's top experts. Currently, Zhang Hua, Zhang Mei, and Zhang Min are all out tempering themselves within this region.

To place within the top three during the gathering and enter the central region of the nation with his brother, this is Zhang Tian's current goal.

"You wish to attend?" Zhang Hai asks, already knowing the answer. Zhang Tian nods, causing the older man's frown to deepen.

While the gathering is generally a safe event, there is still the chance of danger and death for the unlucky few. Without a suitable level of cultivation and ability, it is foolish to even attend the event.

"This…"

Zhang Hai trails off, falling into deep thought. A few seconds pass in silence before he speaks again.

"It is not impossible. In these past few years, you have accumulated more knowledge than even the best of your peers. On this alone, you are capable enough to participate. However, three months… it is a short time to prepare."

"I can do it." Zhang Tian cuts in, looking firm and resolute.

Zhang Hai nods in agreement.

"I do not doubt that. In any other situation, I would simply brush your words off as the ignorance of youth, but you have been blessed by this fortuitous encounter. If the words of the Third Elder are correct, reaching a suitable level in just three short months should not be too difficult."

Zhang Hai almost snorts at his own words. Not too difficult indeed. As the third elder said, Zhang Tian's body is completely clean of impurities. This young teen that has been unable to cultivate since birth has now been gifted with the physique of someone that has cultivated for over half a decade. With his intellect, even if he decides to pick up the most trash cultivation manual within the clan archive, Zhang Tian should still be able to break-through to the intermediate stage of the Body Refinement realm within three months. If Zhang Tian can't accomplish even this much with the resources of the clan, then he may as well give up on his dream.

"So, I can compete?"

Zhang Hai shrugs at that.

"That will depend on you. In three months time, I will hold an assessment. If you pass, you may compete."

Zhang Tian grins widely and bows with cupped hands.

"Thank you, Father."

Zhang Hai smiles again before waving his hand dismissively as they come upon his study.

"Go and think on my words, Tian'er. Tomorrow, Father will reserve a seclusion chamber for you to use for the next three months. See the two elders, prepare yourself, then come find me tomorrow."

"Yes, Father."

With a final bow, Zhang Tian turns and begins making his way back to his home. As he walks, a feeling of excitement bubbles up within his chest. This… this is really happening.

.

Finally.

Along the way back to his home, Zhang Tian dispatches two servants with messages. Since he has been in the manor all morning, Cho Mang and Guo Yue have not yet sought him out. Knowing the two, they will instantly appear within ten minutes of him leaving the manor. Rather than wait, Zhang Tian dispatches the servants with messages to inform the two that he will be resting at home for the rest of the day so they need not seek him out.

Returning to his home, Zhang Tian immediately shuts himself in his room and flops onto his (thankfully) clean bed. With his guards informed to turn away any visitors, and his regular companions given the day off, Zhang Tian can finally relax and examine his prizes from the system in private. A single thought is enough to call up the system menu-

-and Zhang Tian immediately focuses on the inventory section. One after the other, his two rewards are withdrawn from the system inventory with all of the delicate care befitting such treasures. Both items appear in his cupped hands as he's willed them to, and Zhang Tian gently sets them on the bed. With a strong exhale, the young teen carefully examines the two items.

The first item is a simple looking, paper scroll. Wrapped around two, thin handles of polished wood, the back of the scroll is completely black in color. A paper tag seals the scroll closed, the words 'One Palm Advances, A Thousand Strike' identifying what lays within. If he didn't know better, Zhang Tian would think this is just a trash item. Unlike the scrolls in the clan archive, with their detailed labels and artistic drawings on the back, this scroll is completely mediocre in appearance. Thankfully, he does know better and Zhang Tian can understand the value of the information stored within this item.

The second item that Zhang Tian has retrieved from the inventory is actually a jade slip. Roughly as long and wide as a pair of chopsticks, and rectangular in shape with rounded edges, the slip is carved from a piece of flawless, green jade with no hint of a single imperfection. Much like the technique scroll, the jade slip is generally mediocre in appearance. Other than the small tracing of inscriptions along its edges that enable its function, the slip simply has the words 'Lesser Universal Body' carved along its center. A far cry from those slips within the archive with their intricate carvings of myriad beasts, resplendent weapons, and elemental forces. Mediocre appearance or not, it does not matter. The value of the jade slip has always been in its function rather than its appearance.

Thanks to the intricate inscriptions carved along its edge, a jade slip allows one to slip their consciousness into the item in order to store or retrieve information. Such slips are best used to store delicate and complex knowledge, the sort of knowledge that is impossible to transfer through simple speech or text. The sort of knowledge that must be felt, and experienced, rather than just understood. In this whole world, the most common use of a jade slip is to pass on a cultivation art.

Each and every cultivation art requires a specific breathing pattern, a specific mindset, and a specific method of circulating Qi. Without careful and dedicated guidance, it is easy for a budding cultivator to make a mistake that can cause their cultivation to go berserk. Unless they are a peerless genius only seen once every thousand generations, simply telling the person how they should feel, and how they should control their body while cultivating, will do nothing but harm them. Thus, the use of the jade slip. By personally immersing their consciousness in the comprehensions and insights of the slip's creator, the receiver can instantly understand how to properly perform the cultivation art with the littlest amount of risk possible.

Having withdrawn the two items from the inventory, and inspected them, Zhang Tian has no qualms about using them immediately. As the knowledge within the jade slip will require some time to comprehend, Zhang Tian decides to begin with the technique scroll. A single slice with his thumbnail is all it takes to part the seal, and Zhang Tian opens the scroll with an expression of anticipation.

Fully unrolled, the scroll is roughly three Chi long, and three quarters as wide. The paper of the scroll looks completely new and unblemished, utterly pristine with the ink shining like it has just been freshly applied. Amazed as he is at this strange sight, Zhang Tian does not hesitate to begin reading the words on the scroll. The information written on the scroll is relatively short given the content, with a few diagrams of exceptional detail drawn to provide examples and further clarity. In the time it takes an incense stick to burn, Zhang Tian has already finished reading the whole scroll. Then he reads it again. And again. And again. It is only after he has read the scroll a half dozen times, that Zhang Tian sets it back down on the bed.

Seated there upon his bed, Zhang Tian can only marvel in awe at the complexities of this technique. The thought and effort placed into the creation of this palm strike. The depth of understanding and thought. Everything he has just read has left Zhang Tian feeling stunned. Really though, he should have expected this. After all, no matter how much one refines their body, it is impossible for them to launch a thousand palm strikes in a single instant. Not with pure physical power or speed at least. Reading the intricacies of the 'One Palm Advances, A Thousand Strike' technique, Zhang Tian can't help but feel like he has been thinking like a fool all these years.

To perform the 'One Palm Advances, A Thousand Strike' technique, the cultivator requires exceptional timing and Qi control. At the exact moment of impact with a target, the user of the technique must release an explosion of Qi from the center of their palm. Rather than striking outwards, where it can easily be dispelled by the Qi circulation of the enemy, the Qi explosion must actually target inward. By using the force of the Qi explosion, and that of a second explosion from the elbow detonated an instant after the first, the cultivator can drive their arm back into the target with great force. They must do this a thousand times in the blink of an eye.

How does this work? How can such small explosions of Qi achieve such force? How is the user's arm not savaged by the sheer forces involved? Zhang Tian hs no idea, even his understanding of Qi doesn't stretch this far. What he does understand, however, no matter how basic it may be, is the science of Earth. This technique... the use of rebound forces; the way it negates inertia; the way it uses explosive force to drive the arm of the user into the target over and over like the piston. A cultivator of this world would be shocked at the sheer profoundness inherent within this technique. Zhang Tian, with his foreign knowledge, is able to just barely grasp at understanding the intricacies of it yet even he falls short. What is Qi, that it can allow the accomplishment of such impossible feats?

Swirling in his thoughts, Zhang Tian can't help but smile and laugh. Questions like this are the reason he wants to escape this small country and see what the wide world has to offer. So much to learn, So much to understand. How wonderful.

Putting the matter of the 'One Palm Advances, A Thousand Strike' technique aside until he can actually attempt at performing it, Zhang Tian turns his attention to the slip containing his cultivation art. A simple force of will is all it takes for his consciousness to sink into the jade slip, and Zhang Tian's body goes still as his mind explores the information within the slip. Within the slip, Zhang Tian fully experiences the cultivation method of the 'Lesser Universal Body' art. Like with the technique scroll, Zhang Tian examines the information of the jade slip over and over. He pays careful attention to every little detail, immersing himself in the knowledge of the slip as time passes.

Finally, after an unknown period of time, Zhang Tian withdraws his consciousness from the slip. There is a rueful expression on his face and, with a great exhale of air, the teen flops onto his back with his eyes closed.

'This cultivation method-'

The 'Lesser Universal Body' cultivation art… it goes far beyond any other cultivation art Zhang Tian has ever seen, let alone heard of. The profoundness of the art. The requirements and steps. No other cultivation method Zhang Tian knows of can compare. This art simply stands in a league of its own. Among the many manuals he had available to choose from, this one really was among the best choice. That said...

'-why is it so difficult? Can I even practice this art?'

The difficulty of the art is staggering. Just the thought of it fills Zhang Tian with dread. How did such a difficult cultivation method come about? It boggles the mind.

The difficulty of the art is two-fold, both stemming from its most basic requirements.

Firstly, the art requires Zhang Tian to cultivate using only Primordial Qi. That being, Qi that is completely pure of influence. This is the Qi that is said to have existed from the dawn of creation, from before the birth of Yin and Yang, and from them, the five elements. Primordial Qi is a form of Qi of the highest purity and, as such, the highest rarity. In any given area, one will be lucky to find even a single mote of Primordial Qi for every thousand motes of elemental Qi.

This is a massive problem.

The 'Lesser Universal Body' art can only be cultivated with Primordial Qi. Where a normal cultivator can cultivate using the general Qi of Heaven and Earth, the denser the Qi concentration the better, Zhang Tian must carefully parse through the Qi and only allow the smallest percentage of it to drive his cultivation art. Failing to do this while cultivating the 'Lesser Universal Body' will cause his cultivation to go berserk. With such a stringent requirement, Zhang Tian's future cultivation of this art can only proceed at a snail's pace.

The second requirement of the art is the use of a suitably dense material. The 'Lesser Universal Body' art is a powerful art. It allows one to cultivate a body that is unnaturally dense, achieving a level of physical body refinement that is beyond all others. This grants the cultivator a degree of strength and durability that is hard to match. To cultivate the art, Zhang Tian needs to use an item of suitable density to act as a catalyst for restructuring the foundation of his body. The difficulty in this is also two-fold.

Firstly, the material in question. From the jade slip, Zhang Tian has learned that very few items are actually suitable for use with this art. He can't just pick up any random rock or metal and cultivate with it. From the slip, the only material Zhang Tian knows of that fits the most basic requirement is Black Spirit Steel. Black Spirit Steel is the highest grade forging material in all of Grand Ye. The material is the strongest and densest metal within Ye Country. It can be used to craft spirit weapons and armor that are low Earth-rank at a minimum. This makes the material incredibly valuable. Acquiring the item isn't too difficult, however. Within the Zhang clan, there are at least a few ingots in the treasury, waiting for someone to amass enough tokens to request a weapon or armor forged with them. If Zhang Tian asks, there is no doubt he can claim an ingot for his use. Which would be more than enough for his needs. The real difficulty is in utilizing the item.

The 'Lesser Universal Body' art contains within it a vast degree of profoundness. To cultivate it with a dense item isn't as simple as one would think. Zhang Tian had assumed that the required item was needed to reinforce the structure of his body. There are some cultivation arts that use the bone or flesh of spirit beasts to give the cultivator a stronger body. Zhang Tian assumed this art was the same. This couldn't be further from the truth.

With the chosen item in hand, Zhang Tian must allow his consciousness to sink into the item while cultivating. From there, he must somehow grasp onto the very concept of Density buried within that item and copy it over to his body. To do something like this… the amount of concentration, understanding, and comprehension required is staggering. Even watching it done through the slip wasn't enough. To achieve the higher levels of the 'Lesser Universal Body' art, Zhang Tian will need to consult the jade slip many times more and struggle to comprehend the profoundness within.

With such requirements, it is nearly impossible for anyone but an ancient master to ever cultivate this art. Even knowing the steps, Zhang Tian feels it is impossible for him to cultivate this art without a few centuries of free time.

Thankfully, he has the system store. With this cheat like System in hand, the difficulties of this art are actually quite easy to surpass. In fact, it only takes Zhang Tian a few moments of perusal to find some solutions within his price range:

Formation Plate: Elemental Dispursing Trap (High Mortal).
Creates a formation space that repels Elemental Qi. Qi density will decrease in the area as a side-effect. Single-use item.
Strength: Weak.
Duration: 1 Month.
Cost: 100 SP.
Sell: 10 SP.
(+5% total XP bonus to the LUB)

This formation is a simple one, easy to disperse with a basic degree of knowledge regarding formations, and completely ineffective against beasts and cultivators of the second realm and higher. It is also suitable for his needs. By stripping the affected area of elemental Qi, Zhang Tian will be able to better sense and draw in the limited amounts of primordial Qi that remains. This will remove an entire degree of difficulty from his cultivation.

Primordial Qi Crystal (Low Mortal).
The Qi within this crystal has undergone a refinement process. Though there is less energy stored inside it than that within regular spirit crystal of the same size, the purity of the energy within is incomparable. Can be used to craft certain items, pills, or formation plates. Single-use item.
Capacity: Low.
Cost: 20 SP.
Sell: 2 SP.
(+1d20 XP per crystal for the LUB)

The crystal, on the other hand, is absolutely perfect for his needs. Though it seems to be a crafting material, spirit crystals have always had worth to cultivators as the energy within them can often be used to aid cultivation. With a few of these crystals in hand, Zhang Tian can easily cultivate without a need to worry about the purity of the energy he draws in.

Nugget of Meteoric Copper (Low Earth).
Though it is the weakest of the meteoric ores, this orange-red metal found within meteorites that have fallen from the heavens stands a league above most earthly materials. Its strength and density are such that a simple nugget, when mixed with a lighter ore, can create a weapon powerful enough to cut through iron like it is air. Can be augmented with alchemical mixtures and inscriptions.
Material Grade: Good.
Melting Point: High.
Crafting Difficulty: Intermediate Mastery.
Cost: 50 SP.
Sell: 5 SP.
(A grade better than the current alternative, final cultivation effect is improved)

With a much higher density than Black Spirit Steel, cultivating with this material instead will allow Zhang Tian to strengthen his body to a higher degree. His base strength and durability will reach the Low-Earth rank at a minimum, something that is normally only achievable by a pure physical body cultivator in the second realm. That is an impressive feat.

After a few minutes browsing the shop, Zhang Tian decides to buy:

[][shop] # Formation Plate(s).
[][shop] # Primordial Qi Crystal(s).
[][shop] Nugget of Metioric Copper.
[][shop] Write-in: any shop items or originals within the price range.
[][shop] Nothing.

*Replace # with how many you want to buy. There are no alternatives in the clan stuff. If nothing is bought, Zhang Tian will go into his first month of training as is. Cultivation art XP is reduced by 10%.

Finished with the store, Zhang Tian dismisses the system menu and stands from his bed. A deal of time has already passed and it is time for the evening meal. Stretching the kinks out of his body, Zhang Tian makes his way back towards the manor.

In Crimsonwood City, news of the fortuitous encounter of the second young master of the Zhang clan spreads like wildfire. Having a great positive view regarding the Zhang clan, the citizens of the city go wild in celebration. Outer branch members of the clan can be seen roaming the city, celebrating the fortune of their young master as they drink and party.

In the upper echelons of the city, the manors of the city lord, minor nobles, and major merchants, plans are being made as various gifts are gathered and shipped out. All face must be given to the Zhang clan and none of these minor players want to draw the ire of Zhang Hai by forgetting to send his son a celebratory gift. Thousands of gold coins worth of treasure finds its way into the Zhang clan in one day, all of it reserved for the young Zhang Tian.

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the city, shadowed figures go unseen as they leap the city walls and disappear into the wilderness. Appearing at a small pond at the base of a mountain, the cloaked figures comb through the area with the skill and professionalism of experts. Their task complete, they report one after the other to a single figure before leaping away into the night. Left alone in the clearing, the final figure runs glowing red eyes over a small, charcoal-filled pit, before turning aside. The figure takes a single step into the shadows before vanishing.

Back at the Zhang clan compound, Zhang Tian releases a pleased burp as he turns in his bed. Deep asleep, a happy smile can be seen on the young teens face.
