The formal name for a group of Whismur is called a 'Sussuration.' —Me, who made this fact up just now.

Corresponding names for Loudred and Exploud are a 'Concert' and a 'Cacophony'.

...

Wait then didnt I title this wrong—aaaaaaaa

But how could you set a rock on fire?
Well I don't know Astra, probably the same way that you could set the sky on fire!
I guess that there was enough confusion there for the other two to not notice their friend wasn't actually a human.
Well, hard to say...
"I... said... stop!" Astra silently screamed, eyes squeezed shut. Power surged, Astra pushed, and suddenly the noise ceased.
She does seem to have thrown out a Bigby's Forceful Hand strong enough to whammy her brain. Something like that might raise some questions. Though everyone was pretty confused at the time and Exploude could have just decided that fists were more entertaining.
Brendan stared at Astra, wide-eyed, then glared at Exploud with grit teeth.
But Brendan did seem to be rather surprised by something when staring straight at Astra while...
Idly, Astra noted that her illusions had fallen off at some point.
...
Then again, There are lots of reasons for people's eyes to bulge, like feeling some amount of fear due to being in a fight for your life.... The staring less so... unless Astra had some messy injury she hasn't noticed or an embarrassing stain on her rag toga. It is worth noting that the cave was probably dark, and there was likely a fair bit of dust about, so everything except the massive height difference could easily be obscured.

The exploud did nothing wrong. I feel bad for it, honestly. Will it lose confidence in itself and its ability to defend its family? What will happen to the Whismur colony? Inquiring minds want to know.

Also, Dermonster, have I ever told you that your user profile looks like a Cacturne?
I mean, it did attack them for something someone else did and refused to listen to reason. Plus, the Whismur being surprised he listened to her indicates he's a pretty shitty "my way or the highway" leader under most circumstances.

Thank you.
CRY SOME MORE!
"She's been pretty helpful so far," Astra said, shrugging. "I don't have a problem with it."

"If she starts screaming, so will I," May warned.
"But I will, if she starts screaming", maybe?

EDIT: Oh, slap my face and roll my eyes. May is saying: "If the Whismur starts screaming, I will yell, too".

Thank you for reading my story. Please tell me what you think!
I think the Exploud will not regret punching May anytime soon.

"Darn noisy kids, trespassin on mah property, raisin a ruckus".

Honestly, I can kind of understand the Exploud. Imagine that you're going about your business, a bit cranky from the earthquake last night, and from the construction workers that just HAD to start fixing the road at SIX in the morning. And then suddenly, all kids in your neighbourhood start crying. As a responsible adult, you go to check what's happened. Apparently, some ruffians were harassing them with awful noises. Naturally, you'd get more cross, instead of less. One of the more... impressionable kids begins to tell you about the strangers being actually kind - bless his heart for trying to emphathise, but he'll get himself into a big heap of trouble one day. Anyway, just then, one of the "kind" strangers yells at you and throws a flaming chicken at your head. Which breathes fire. In your face. That wouldn't improve your mood one bit. And after you give them a very stern warning to get right out - in the, you know, universal language of physical threats - instead of beating it, the strangers begin to beat you. Who wouldn't go off the rocker at that?

My guess is, only the calmest of individuals, or those who fully intended from the start to avoid any violence. A slim margin. I don't think anybody in that evolutionary line has that kind of temperament.

Well, it's really all on either the Aqua Grunt who has an amazing ability to cause trouble, or on our heroes, who didn't clobber him on the head first thing. :V

Oh, and Astra, of course:

Personally, I'd have gone with Cacophony for a group of Loudred, while a group of Exploud is just an AAAAAAAHHHH, referencing either the last sound you are likely to ever hear, or the sound one generally makes while running away from them. :p

Anyways, great chapter! The triple evolution was unexpected, but you pulled it off pretty well. I'll agree with @LordSunshine that having the grunt get away after such an extended pursuit is kind of frustrating, but it's not like they get arrested in the games proper, so I suppose it only makes sense.

In other news, Whismur is cute, Brandon is smart, and poor Astra seems to have residual trauma from blowing open a hole in the sky. Even accounting for the Exploud's scream and Brendan and May's presence, this seems like a deeper problem. Hopefully she'll manage to overcome it soon - she just evolved, now is supposed to be the time to experiment with all the cool new stuff she can do! Especially with the fighting type gym coming up... not that any of her Pokemon could learn psychic moves from her right now anyways, but it's the principle of the thing.

Looking forward to the next one!

Nah you're good, a group of Pokemon is defined by its known leader, not the majority composition. Thus, this group of Whismur known to be led by an Exploud is still a cacophony, while if known leadership changes to a Loudred at some point, it would become a concert. -me, who just made up this fact now to console you.

Not a murmuration? I'm not sure if that's what you're referencing.

Though I don't think earth-bound animals can really murmurate.

Susurrus means 'whismpering, muttering, or rustling'.

Groups of animals have some weird names sometimes. Murder of crows, for a basic example.

So sussuration fits for a group of Whismur, because they're very quiet. Until they aren't.

I thought, since sussurate is a synonym with murmur, that might be what you were going for. Though a murnuration is more an ecological phenomenon than a mere collection of birds.

...Does that mean Astra is going to fake her pokemon having a psychic attack while she just stands there like an innocent violinist? She doesn't even know the limits of what her team can learn so... That might be fun lol

She probably won't know all about types until she goes to Roxanne's school. Does she even know May's type? She certainly shouldn't know Brendan's...
Well, she hasn't figured out Brendan's type yet. May's, though…

"I'm the only one allowed to defeat Brendan." she explained, still grinning.
"Distracted. Right. I guess snooping through my room would count as that, wouldn't it?" Brendan asked with a wry smirk.

May's face turned an interesting shade of pink. "Sh-shut up!" she yelled.
"You really like messing with him, don't you?"

"Eh?" May coughed, and looked away. "He just makes it so easy, is all." She said, waving Astra off. "Don't get any weird ideas."
Astra has a guess.

Astra asked May about Types once and ended up flirting with her. She's not too keen to have a repeat experience, which I am sure some of you are dissapointed about.
