Holding Out For A Hero: An Original Superhero Quest

[X] Bluescreen - Causes electronic devices to deactivate. Depending on the strength of the spell, it could be reversed by rebooting or could even break the machine entirely.

Regeneration would be nice as well, especially if we keep being the community healer but adding in more support functions is useful for us and for future group endeavors

[X] Regeneration - Heals the target, and increases the target's HP by 1 for 2d6 rounds. Very costly to cast when starting out.
[X] Poison Cure- Can be used to heal yourself, or someone else of most known poisons. From cyanide, if cast fast enough to plain food poisoning.

Vote results so far. I ask that if you've voted for more than one spell, to choose one, otherwise, I can't count it. Though if you're already satisficed with the winner, then feel free to keep your vote as it is.

Why not? The tally is fully capable of doing so.

I was thinking more like each person gets 1 vote.

Interlude
October 30th, 2015, 9 15 am

Mr. Nightmare stared at the poster that he had hung up in his hotel room. It was from his 1991 tour, "Burning Wake", it was the thing that had put him on the radar as a musician. He stared at his own image. He was so young, full of fire back then. He thought that his time would last forever.

He didn't dare look at the mirror just a few feet away from him. He wanted to avoid acknowledging it as much as possible. But time was creeping up on him. He couldn't fight it forever.

Now, he was getting old.

Multiple cosmetic surgeries, hair dye, a relentless skin care routine and a lifestyle that his wealth gave him helped him stave off looking it for a while. But he couldn't run away from it for much longer. He was gaining weight. Crows feet were forming under his eyes, he had less energy, in many ways, and he was starting to get arthritis. He couldn't even belt out long notes or hit the high screams like he used to.

He continued to stare at the poster, as if it would take him back to his peak. He used to sell out stadiums, his songs were on every radio station that played any kind of music where someone strummed a guitar. But now... he had seen the ticket sales from his latest show. Some would call them not bad. But for him, it was a disappointment.

If he didn't go through with what he was planning, he'd continue to fade until he ended up forgotten in an old folks home. too feeble to even wipe his own ass. And whenever people thought of him, they'd think of a sad sack that was just clinging to old fame who hadn't made a good song in 15 years.

He shook his head. The thought seemed to make the room colder. Goosebumps were forming on his arms. He dug into one of his suitcases to fish something out. At first, he didn't have any interest in the occult. It was just something people assumed that he would have, especially during the "Moral Panic" more than a decade or so back. Then, he started leaning into it, pretend to be interested because it was counter-culture. But as he got older, his interest became more genuine.

That was what lead him to the tattered, leatherbound book sitting on the table in front of him. It cost a significant portion of his dwindling fortune to obtain, but to Nightmare it was worth it.

Most people who understood magic would think it was crazy. A bunch of useless "Rituals" that did fuck all. And when he first read it, it was akin to ramblings of a mad man. But as he kept reading, he found some very interesting. Very interesting indeed.

He smiled. After tomorrow, he wasn't going to be put out to pasture. People would remember him, no matter what happened.

His thoughts were interrupted by a series of knocks on the door. "Hey Tommy! You aren't passed out in there, are you?!" One of his bandmates yelled from the other side.

"Fuck off! I don't have time for this!" Nightmare shouts.

"We gotta head to the Atlas Arena in fifteen. Arthur wants to do some rehearsals there for our show tomorrow. We need to make sure the sound system's working, so get your ass ready, put on deodorant, snort some blow, just be at the car in five." The bandmate says impatiantly.

Nightmare sighed. 'Just one more day'. He muttered to himself before letting a smile cross his face. "Don't worry. I'll be out in two!"

Movie Night
You, are sitting in the passenger seat of the family car as you drive down the road to Jasmine's house. You're wearing your Corporal Steel costume. It's a replica of his powered armor, though sadly doesn't have the minigun in the shoulder. Still, with your toughness and magic, you're pretty much as safe as the man himself is. And you've tied up your hair so tightly that it may legally qualify as a helmet on its own.

"So, we were lifting this guy's truck, about to get to work on it. I saw the problem in a second. A giant hole right in the bottom of the engine. No idea how it got there." Adrian says, talking about his day at the autobody shop. He's wearing a Sunspot jumpsuit. It looks remarkably close to the real thing, even from what you remember of seeing it up close. Though Adrian's has less blood and broken glass. "But Johnny, he looks in the wheel well, and sees a enormous... enormous package of... sugar" He glances at the rearview mirror, adjusting it to look at Gwen.

Gwen is in her Starhammer costume, headpiece, cape and all. She's excited for movie night. She glances at the hot wings and dipping sauce you and Adrian made for the movie marathon. You just hope that Jasmine picked up somewhat age appropriate movies. Or at least, one or two for Gwen to watch before she falls asleep. You've seen Jasmine's taste in movies and they can be a bit... rough.

"Heh, you'd think they'd remember to grab it before they took the SUV into the shop." You say, chuckling.

"Who knows. Maybe they didn't think we'd find it." Adrian says. "So, I'm freaking out, trying to think of what to tell this guy while Johnny calls the cops-"

"Why were you calling the cops? Sugar isn't illegal, right?" Gwen says. Then, her eyes widen, and glance at the large container of frosted cookies you baked for movie night. "...right?"

"Don't worry. This was American sugar. That guy probably had... Bolivian sugar." You quickly say. You don't want to have the drug talk with Gwen for another few years.

Gwen thinks about it for a moment, then shrugs, then furrows her brow. "That's stupid. Sugar's sugar. Why is it illegal if it's from another country?" Gwen asks.

"It has a lot to do with international policy and trade and stuff. It's really boring" Adrian assures her.

Gwen shrugs, satisficed. Though she mutters something about it still being stupid.

"Fine..." Gwen says. For the rest of the drive, Adrian explains how he had to keep the alleged drug smuggler busy, while waiting for the cops to arrive. Explaining various "issues" that the car was having. After a little while, you drive up to Jasmine's apartment. As you arrive, you see another woman a few years older than you already getting out of her SUV. It's Lauren Bowers, a family friend of Jasmine's and her two kids, Dominic and Crystal All three are wearing the yellow and purple costumes of an independent villain team from out west, the TnC Army.

Lauren smiles as she sees you. "Oh, looks like the DSA really sent out the big guns to catch us this time." She says to her kids with a large smile. "How are you doing? Sonya and Adrian, right?"

"That's right. And you're Lauren? Jasmine's told be a bit about you. You taught her how to play piano when she was a kid, right?" You say.

"I certainly tried" Lauren says, grinning. "Don't know if any of is stuck"

While you all are talking, Gwen stands in front of the brother and sister, pointing at them and striking a pose. "In the name of Justice and Order, I'm bringing you to... Justice!"

Dominic, the older of the two siblings at around 8, simply smiles and gives out a short but loud laugh. "You ain't taking me alive!" Then he takes off, running past the car and towards Jasmine's apartment building. Krystal, not to be outdone, simply blows raspberries before taking off after her brother.

"Stop! In the name of the law!" Gwen says in an exaggerated Starhammer impression before giving chase.

"Hey, don't run off. It can get dark around here, and we don't wanna lose you." Adrian says, scooping up Gwen before she can get too far. Lauren runs past him to get her own children.

Gwen just pouts. "You just let the bad guys get away..."

When you get inside the apartment, you see a modest spread of popcorn, candy, sodas, and various snack foods on a folding table, while the right wall is taken up by a projection screen. Her stuff, a computer filled with figurines, Jasmine is working on hooking up her laptop to the projector when she sees you come in. "Hey guys! We're almost done setting this thing up. Lock the door behind you and grab some snacks" She says, waving at you. Jasmine's dressed in a Camp Rolling Hills Councilor Uniform.

There are already a few people here, all in costume. A couple of people from Jasmine's roleplaying group, one of which has brought her girlfriend and son. Another guy you vaguely recognize.

"Good to see you again. You keeping Sonya out of trouble?" Adrian asks Jasmine.

"I would like to plead the 5th Amendment to protest me from self incrimination" Jasmine says in a joking manner. All three of you know just how much trouble you'll deny you've been in.

"Alright, looks like everyone's here." Jasmine says, grinning. "Anyway, I got a bunch of movies here. And since she's the only one who didn't laugh out loud, I'm letting my close, close friend Sonya pick the first one. And remember, Sunny, there are kids here, so try and keep it family friendly" Then she leans in to whisper. "Once the kids are asleep and the parents take them home, that's when we get to the good stuff." Jasmine says with a wide grin. You take a look at the box,

[] Spirit's Revenge: A group of criminals who want to make the jump to Villains break into a former Vigilantes lair to steal their old equipment. But while there isn't any traditional security, the hero's ghost is still protecting his former lair.
[] Scooby Doo on Zombie Island: Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, Velma, and Daphne reunite after a year-long hiatus from Mystery, Inc. to investigate a bayou island said to be haunted by the ghost of the pirate Morgan Moonscar.
[] My Name Is Frankenstein: A 2013 adaptation of the classic story. Apparently takes more from the book than the movie, but it can't be that bad.
[] Santa Claus vs. The Devil: A demon named Pitch is sent to Earth by Lucifer on Halloween to ruin Christmas by killing Santa and "making all the children of the Earth do evil".
[] Frank: The Movie 2: Ghost to Coast: A Youtube celebrity's second attempt to broaden his audience. While technically a horror movie, the scariest things are things not meant to be scary.
[] Tales That Give You Goosebumps: An anthology of several stories written by R. L. Stein.
[] Cambial Holocaust 2: A group of student search for their professor after he goes missing in the Amazon. Along the way, they make contact with an unknown tribe. "No seriously. It isn't as bad as the first one" Jasmine says. "You'd show this to kids?" You ask. "Yeah. There isn't that much gore. No bad language. It's practically an action movie with a bit of horror!" Jasmine explains.
[] I'll let someone else pick.

If she's not old enough to even talk about drugs, let's keep the movie that's playing while our daughter is awake to something nice and cheerful.

Fun fact: I choose Zombie Island because I got Terror Time stuck in my head.

Anyway, voting's open for another 24 hours. If anyone else wants to vote, feel free.

Looks like we have a tie right now between Goosebumps and Zombie Island. Both are pretty good choices. Voting's open for another couple of hours in case anyone wants to break the tie.

Alright. Looks like we have a tie, so I'm rolling a die.

1. Goosebumps
2. Zombie Island

I'll start working on the update after my heart stops pounding because of the US election.

Alright, I'm no longer having a panic attack about the presidential election and I can get started on the next update. I just need someone to roll Mystic Arts +4.

"Ohh... Good choice. 'Viewer beware. You're in for a scare'" Jasmine says with a smile as she puts the DVD in her laptop.

"Yeah, I remember that show back when I was a kid." You say. "Couldn't eat cookies for a month after one of the episodes. Thought I'd turn into a lizard person"

Jasmine chuckles, then hums a few bars from the theme song as as the movie starts.

Later that night...

It was late at night at the Atlas Arena just south of Downtown Hartford. It had been a day of rehearsals, sound checks, and pre-concert publicity tour. Just 10 years ago, Nightmare would've been at a club pre-gaming, getting smashed and getting to know his fans to get ready for the concert. But his eyes were heavy and he just wanted to crawl into bed. And he hated himself for it.

But right now, having slipped away from the half dozen crewmembers publicists, managers, roadies, his bandmates, and all the other hanger ons, he was alone. Atlas Arena was an indoor arena that, when the basketball and hockey teams weren't playing here, had seen a lot of musical acts passing through its doors and play on its stages. From Frank Sinatra, to Queen, to Van Halen and, well himself. 15000 people could fill the stands, though from the ticket sales, far fewer would be be attending the concert tomorrow.

He stood on the empty stage. A lot of the props were stored backstage. But the important parts were already assembled. The giant horned skull that was supposed to be behind the band, that took up a good portion of the stage, with red arcane symbols drawn on every inch of it, matching the symbols painted on the stage floor. For most people, it was just his standard occult stuff. Maybe they'd think he was trying to bring the demon skull behind him to life.

Well... if this worked, they'd be close.

He played a chord from his guitar, and he felt like he was hooked up to a car battery. He could feel his heart racing, his hair standing on end. He took a deep breath, feeling as if he could float off the ground.

He let out a joyous scream, hitting a high note he hadn't been able to in 10 years and played more.

The symbols drawn on the skull started to glow and pulse in an eerie red light. As he kept playing, the pulsing light became stronger. He could feel them. The symbols on the ground and the statue were pulsing in time with his heartbeat. Hell, he could feel each and every one of them as if they were a part of his body.

And then he stopped. The symbols stopped glowing, their lights dimming until they were out entirely. And, as quickly as it started, everything was back to normal, with no evidence that anything unusual happened at all. He was breathing heavily, gasping for air. His entire body was drenched in sweat. He felt like he was going to die. That his body would sluff off of his soul and crumble into dust.

He had never felt better.

Nightmare smiled. It wasn't time to finish that song. He wasn't ready. There weren't enough people to see what he was going to do. But tomorrow...

Though, he thought, another rehearsal wouldn't hurt. He lifted his arm and belted out a chord again.

Several hours, three movies, and several handfuls of snacks later, Gwen is asleep in your arms. A few people had left to take/drop off their own kids back home, and now it was your turn. Adrian is planning on coming back to see the cannibal movie.

"Hey, I'll see you guys later. Hope you have fun trick-or-treating tomorrow" Jasmine says as she leans out of the door. The piano theme for the latest good Halloween movie start playing behind her as the movie starts up.

"Well do, Jasmine. See ya" Adrian says, waving.

"I'll see you in a few, Kells. Hope you've got something good planned for tomorrow." You say.

Jasmine smiles. "I'm heading Downtown for Halloween. I hear they got new AR goggles for the Zombie Safari and I've signed up to help break 'em in." She says with some excitement in her voice.

You crack a smile. "Be sure to bag a few zeds for me, then." You say, putting Gwen in your backseat before getting into the car. "I'll see you in a couple of days."

Jasmine nods. "Alright. I'll catch you later."

As the three of you drive home, you don't see the gathering clouds over downtown, or the lightning strike that rips through the sky.

October 31st, 2015

It's in the middle of a Saturday morning when you're at your workshop. The bad news is that there isn't any work being done right now. Because you're standing outside of your workshop with a bucket of paint covering a gang tag that was sprayed on your workshop.

You haven't studied criminology. It was a headshot of a hooded man holding a knife with the local area code painted on the blade, all painted in red.

You'd seen a few tags in the area recently, mostly painted on fences facing the street, or on walls where no one was looking. You'll admit, part of you is getting nervous. Southlake has generally been, well not quiet, but there wasn't much in the way of organize- overt organized crime in your area. And now that it's here and showing it's face.

You want to invest in a security system, maybe some lights and cameras. This area can get really dark at night, especially during the winter. But you don't have the money to spare. A lot of your savings went into making your new armor and patching it up. But... there is something you could do to make your neighborhood a little safer.

You could knock out a few projects today, and go on patrol. You aren't planning on clearing out any drug dens or burning down another gang hideout. But making sure that no one is getting robbed, kidnapped or killed. And, you could make it back home in time to go trick-or-treating. You'd have to work all day Sunday to take care of the backlog of jobs, but hey, you've done it before, and you can do it again.

[] Go out on patrol today. You'll start heading home around sunset so you can take your family trick or treating.
[] No, you'll go on patrol another day.

[X] No, you'll go on patrol another day.

One as already stated cash reserves.

Two We do not want to get hurt and miss Halloween for good mother purposes and for not being suspicious reasons.

Three we want a little more time than day of between our shop being gang tagged and Vigil showing up.

Because obvious possible producer or armor is obvious.
