Holding Out For A Hero: An Original Superhero Quest

...
"Morhic" Kachuusha says, shaking the man, who is still staring at the half-a-body. You see one of the camerapeople running to take shelter, with another is still moving backwards, but trying to get a good shot of the carnage.

"Morphic!" You shout, grabbing his arm and shaking him If he doesn't snap out of it, you're going to carry him yourself.

With that, Morptic's head snaps up and he gets out of his daze. "Yeah... yeah. I'm... let's get outta here."

Out of the corner of your eye, you see Kachuusha put a hand on Morphic's shoulder. "I'll be back for you in a second, Vigil! Just sit tight" Kachuusha says as she puts a hand on Morphic and teleports away.

Well, that works too.

With in about a second, another jet part teleports. It's a part of the fuselage. This one, however, teleports into the ground, the displaced earth pushed aside, leaving a lump of metal sticking out of the sand.

As you look around to find cover, you remember something you saw during the fighting. Cutter's two bodyguards were both carrying suitcases.

If you wanted to you could probably look for them. You don't know how much is in those suitcases, but if it's anywhere in the realm of "Buying an illegal jet" kind of money, it's has to be a lot. You could do a lot with that kind of cash...

[] You go back for something
- [] Take the money
- [] Take the axe that Cutter was using
- [] Take the money and the axe
[] Get to a safe distance until the jet stops raining down around you.
[] Forget the stuff. Just leave. You saw police in the distance and you don't want to stick around for when they get here.

[] You go back for something
-[] Take the axe that Cutter was using
- [] Take the money and the axe

I'm leaning towards either one of these, but probably just the axe since I am unsure of Vigil's ability to spend that money without drawing attention to herself. Hmm, going to go for just the axe.

[X] You go back for something
-[X] Take the axe that Cutter was using

[X] You go back for something
-[X] Take the axe that Cutter was using
We work with metals in our day-job. Maybe we can figure something out from the axe to improve our own tools?

Take them both. We could launder it through phony purchase orders or something. Spend the money in an illusion form.

[X] You go back for something
-[x] Take the money and the axe

Looks like we have a tie between just taking the axe, and taking the axe and the money. I'll keep voting open for a while longer.

Alright. Voting's open for another 12 hours. If anyone else wants to vote, change their vote, or discuss anything, fell free.
Agent 99 threw 3 6-faced dice. Reason: Debris (9) Total: 10

Looks like we have a winner. And are don't get hit by the debris. Now, I'd appreciate if someone rolls a Perception to see if you can find everything.

I vote not to do extra effort. I would rather get out of there without the goods, but unharmed versus risking serious injury in an attempt to get a stretch goal.

Coming Home
You look around for either the axe or the money, but you don't see anything. You know it's here, but between the smoke from the burning vehicles and the plane debris, you've lost track of them. In the distance, you see flashing red and blue lights getting closer. It's official, you can't stay here.

"Vigil!" You hear from behind you. You turn around and see Kachuusha flying towards you. Soon, she puts a hand on your shoulder, and you're teleported away.

---------------------------------------
It's another 15 minutes before you're back in the air. Your heart is still pounding. Your chest still hurts, but another Heal spell has managed to almost completely patch your up. You see the burning hanger in the distance as your plane flies away. You can't tell if the cops are still there, but you saw the flashing lights when you were running across the dark fields to get back to your own plane. Kachuusha has been doing an outro. But you weren't paying attention. You've done your lines already, so now your mind is wandering.

"So, Vigil, that was intense, wasn't it?" Kachuusha says.

"Well, I'd rate it a 8 out of 10 in terms of danger. If we did that on a highway, then it'd be intense" You say with a smile.

"Heh, well, maybe next time." Kachuusha says. "And... thanks for looking out for me. When he fired the guns from the plane."

"Hey, it's no problem" You say.

"But still... I wouldn't have even known about it. I just teleported in a random direction..." Kachuusha says. "How did you know about that anyway?"

"Well, you see, magic users can sense when someone is using magic" You explain. "So when I-"

But then, you suddenly become aware of a large source of magic appearing. Like the one you felt in the plane before it teleported itself to pieces. A split second later...

"HOLY CRAP! CARLOS GET T- GET THE CAMERA!"

"GOT IT! WHERE!"

"RIGHT WINDOW RIGHT WINDOW!"

You, and everyone else in the plane rush over to the window, some of you holding cameras. You see a large, yellow object fall from the sky. You can't tell how far it is from you exactly, but its far it is.

There's a large explosion in the distance. A brilliant flash of yellow light that engulfed several miles of land in an instant. You cover your eyes but you feel something hit you as if you ran into a wall.

The next thing you know, you're on the floor.
-----------------
When you open your eyes, you aren't on the plane. In fact, your mind isn't anywhere on this planet. You look up to see a colossal planet of a size you can barely fathom. It's surface is reds and purples, with flashes of lightning that light up entire continents. As if floats above you, silent, but powerful in it's presence. As you turn your head upwards, you take all of the details in. The massive mountains that jut out, the massive grayish blue storm clouds that move at an impossible speed, the turbulent red seas that churn and writhe on the planet's surface. But despite all of this, it sits silently in the void.

"Am I... here again?" You say to yourself. No sound comes out of your mouth as you look at the planet. Your lungs struggle to draw breath. Your skin is painfully cold. But you don't acknowledge it. All you can do is start upwards, at the colossal planet, itself constantly looking like it is in the process of destroying itself. But still, it remains.

You open your eyes, and you're back on the plane. You on the ground, staring upwards. You're in a cold sweat. You feel like your bones are shriveling inside of your body, like your brain is melting out of your ears, and you're acutely aware of a massive amount of magical energy. The plane is, probably, moving away from it, but its presence is like an overweight toad sitting on your brain. Even when you shut your eyes, try to block it out, it's still there.

"-igil, are you okay?" Someone asks. You don't know who. It's barely more than noise that in some miracle manages to resemble coherent sound. Your vision is blurry and you're barely holding onto consciousness.

[] "No..."
[] "Water. I need water..."
[] "If I die, please tell my family I love them..."
[] "Wake me up when we get back to Hartford"

Explosion rocks Central Texas as many surrounding communities evacuated.

At approximately 8:21 PM, an explosion of an unknown nature went off near the city of Glaze City, Texas. Locals reported an unidentified glowing object suddenly appearing in the sky and falling at the approximate location of the explosion, meaning that this explosion may have been deliberately caused by unknown actors.

Seven people were killed in the explosion, which destroyed several hundred acres of farmland, and several occupying homes. Eighteen people are known to be injured by the blast and the resulting collateral damage.

Military personnel have taken position around the remaining crater and scientists are investigating the area for any clues as to the nature of the explosive used. Colonel Kenneth Lastres, the army official in charge of the investigation, did not respond when asked for comment.

No one has yet taken credit for the attack, and any motives remain unknown, but Nearby cities have been evacuated, citing concerns of nuclear, biological, or other types of fallout that may be a result of the explosion.

Protests regarding the Citizen Hero Bill continue into the night

The California Legislature has been the scene of ongoing protests as the controversial "Citizen Heroes" Bill has been debated for the past several weeks. The bill, inspired by the New York Guardian Angels Act is meant to encourage more people to act as "Part Time" Heroes. The primary point of contention is the fact that the "Citizen Heroes" Bill, as well as the "Guardian Angel Act" has a clause that allows Vigilantes to apply to become Citizen Heroes and be pardoned for their crimes, in exchange for a term of service.

Many people, including California Congressman Jeremy Morris (R) , believe that the pardons have potential to lead to abuse.

"I don't know about you, but I don't want the only thing between my family and some thug with a grudge to be a half trained "Hero" that could've been a murder just last week! A lot of these Vigilantes, they're crazy. They're barely better than the criminals they fight! We should not be condoning this behavior. We should be stamping it out."

One of the bills supporters, Albert Serpa (D), defended the bill, citing the psychological testing and various investigations, and the governors approval required for former vigilantes must go through in order to be eligible to become a Citizen Hero.

"We need to have every option on the table. Crime rates are spiraling out of control, and there are simply not enough law enforcement to cope. There are a lot of people that would be more than willing to help protect their communities if given the chance."

The protestors and counter-protestors have been outside the Legislature since this morning, with no signs of stopping.

Ugh. Well, here we are. Wherever here is.

Hunh...Uhh...Right you had wanted this plot point to come in a tad later didn't you. I suppose we might be about to find out what it is and why.
[X] "Wake me up when we get back to Hartford"
I sense that whoever is speaking is likely not Kachuusha, IDK, I'm getting a 'Theros' vibe here, though it could be something more nuts then that.

Good news, you are in fact, in the plane right now. And its one of the camera crew talking to you. I'm not going to go hard on this plot point for a little while yet.

You feel two or three people propping you up and someone (Kachuusha?) yelling for someone to get some water. You're leaning against the side of a seat when your world comes into focus. You see Kachuusha's concerned face staring at you, as you blink a few times. You're still on the plane, and it's still airborne as far as you can tell.

"Hey Vigil, stay with me. Don't die on my plane." She says, snapping her fingers in front of your face. "Come on, focus."

"Five more minutes..." You groan as you feel yourself slipping down before E pushes you upright.

"What happened?"

"I dunno." You groan. "You see R toss a bottle of water to Kachuusha, who hands it to you. You lift your helmet enough to drink and down the bottle in a single gulp. "I saw that thing fall, then bam, I was down."

"Yeah, you hit the floor hard." Kachuusha says.

"Is everyone else alright?" You ask.

"Yeah. The plane was a little shaken up, but you're the only one who passed out." C says.

"Remind me to send you a gift once we touch down. After all you went through, you've earned it." Kachuusha says.

"Thanks" You say. You're happy with the gift, but right now, you just want to lay down with a cut of cocoa and some marshmallows.

"So, what do you think that was?" M asks. "I mean, I don't think that was anything we or the bad guys did..."

"I think it was whatever was in that jet" You say. "It felt... it was like the same magical frequency, if that makes any sense."

"Well, you're the expert on magic, so I'll leave that up to you" Kachuusha says.

"So, you're sure you're alright?" E asks. "Any ringing in your ears or headaches or anything."

"I'm fine." You say. "But I think I'll be taking the next couple of days to get some rest."

----------------------------------------------------------

The next day...

Ordinance was not having a good day.

She was losing men south of the border. The Cartels had been squeezing her forces out. Often with the help of corrupt Law Enforcement. Shell hadn't had any luck plugging the leaks so far. Even the people she had assigned to investigate Shell hadn't found any evidence that he was leaking anything. The loss of Artillery and the weapons shipment hadn't helped either.

Speaking of Hartford, it was, and still is, vital to their domestics smuggling. It's location and many highways connected it to most of the rest of the US. But it was starting to become a black hole. The Coalition was starting to push her own men back, and their new police chief was starting to arrest their contacts in the police. And for one person who gets arrested, three more try to end their "contract". Maybe she could send Cutter up there to "remind" a few that resignations aren't accepted once he heals. Besides, if Ballistic finds The Vigil, Cutter's sure to want to get some revenge.

The jet was supposed to be a game changer. With her powers, she could find out how it worked in a week, and with the help of some new recruits more versed in magic, she could have started making them in a month. But a pop star turned Vigilante, a washed up has-been, and an annoying up-and-comer managed to destroy the plane. She could've taken the lost money, or even the lost men, but the loss of the Reaper IV would set them back months.

At least she had more contacts north of the border. The Traveler Police had given her people and the money a ride out of the area before the Army started poking around. With the military scouring half the state for debris, and the Hermes Drive obliterated, there wasn't anything that could be salvaged from this debacle.

Which was a big problem for her.

When one is in charge of a criminal organization, you get used to being watched. By law enforcement, sure, but also by your own men. They look to you for leadership, or they will look at you for weakness. If a string of failures kept up for too long, and her "loyal" lieutenants managed to convince enough people to support a coup, then she could end up "going to sea" like the man who used to run the organization.

She had to show that she was still strong enough to be in charge. She had sent Centerlock more resources to fight the Cartels physically, and a few diplomats to sway some local politicians to see things their way. That should take some pressure off south of the border. But closer to home, she had a glory-hound, a has-been, and a wannabe ruin a multimillion, possibly billion dollar deal.

Which is why she was on a video call with Battery. The older man had a "Battery, checking in as requested, Boss"

"Tell me what you've found out about The Vigil." Ordinance says, getting straight to the point.

"We've managed to get some good information" He says with a smile. "From that Kachuusha livestream, we saw that they went over there by plane, so we took a look at flight plans. from every major airport in Hartford. We looked into flight plans in the area, and found an airport with a departure that matches when the plane likely left. And when we looked through the security footage..."

An image appears on screen. It shows a tall blonde man with short hair and stubble on The Vigil's motorcycle.

Ordinance smiled. "Well, there's something we can go off of. Have you found out who this is?"

"Not yet" Battery says. "Our contacts in the PD have run his face in their facial recognition software. No matches in their criminal records. Whoever it is, they don't have a record."

"Unfortunate." Ordinance says. "Was their any luck in getting access to the DSA Powered Database"

Battery shakes his head. "No. Thing is locked up right. We haven't been able to get anyone inside of their building."

Ordinance nods. "Understood. And if you do find find a lost of people with matching powers but they don't look like the picture you have, keep in mind, The Vigil is a magic user. They could be using their magic to disguise themselves. Treat that face as if it's a mask that The Vigil could be wearing."

"Yes Boss" Battery says.

"And two more things." She says. "First, I'm transferring more money into your account. If you need to bribe some people to get access to the Powered Database, then do it."

"Thank you" Battery says with a grin.

"And, when you find The Vigil, don't mess around. If you can make them suffer, then do so if practical. But your number one priority is to kill them. If there's a chance they could comeback and act against us again, you kill them. Understood?"

There was a hint of disappointment on his face as he nodded. "Yes, Boss" He says.

"Good." She says. "Get it done" Ordinance says as she ends the call. When the line goes dead, she reaches under her desk and pulls out a bottle of bourbon and a glass. Pouring it half full, she knocks it back.

Time to start flipping masks. Rotating through a few different faces and voices should throw people off for a while; we could even keep a pocket notebook of which face and voice we use for which contacts.

At least it'll stick until they find someone who analyzes things like gait patterns and the license plate on our bike. Which reminds me...any way we could just slip a blurriness illusion over the plate so that anybody farther than like 5 feet can't quite tell what the plate number is? It's not strictly illegal to blur our license plate, and having something that 'looks okay at first glance' but blurs characters that might look similar (1, I, and L; 0 and O, etc.) will help us cover our tracks without drawing additional attention. Besides, they're going to be looking at the heavily-armored sword-wielding person on the bike, not the license plate anyway.
