Story Begins:
Your mother was not interested in you, as you were presented to her by the guards. "Mother." You whispered the word carefully, as you did not really know what was going through her mind. You could tell that she was deep in thought, watching the courtyard below. "You summoned me?" It was strange to speak so formally to her, but you had long ago realized that there were things that were expected of you.
There would be no comfort here, not with your mother, not with anyone here in the palace.
"Come Neoptolemus." She ordered, frostiness of the winter snow was in her voice, callous and uncaring, and you did, the guards that escorted you following close behind. "Look down and tell me what you see?"
The Afternoon sun was burning from above, Helios was blazing with a summer that was not without end, but with great power. The rains that came had caused a powerful blossom of flowers and green that you could see across the countryside. It would be a bountiful harvest if the augers were correct.
But you knew she was focused on her pride, her joy.
You looked down to see Alexander training, with a shield and wooden sword, on the ground, trying to practice his stances, and his formations with the other boys, as well as shouting. He was practicing his duties as a prince. His duties as heir. And Philip wanted to see Alexander become a great and powerful, and loyal subordinate. You knew that from Alexandersown words.
"He is training to be a soldier." It was a simple answer. It was truly the only answer. Alexander was his father's soldier.
Your mother did not seem angered by those words, but you could see her disappointment. There was something more that she has hoped for you to understand. Something, that you truly did not know.
"Training to be a King." She replied as she stepped away from the overlook, gesturing you to follow. And you did, looking at the guards who were trading glances, and using their spears to trade around, to keep themselves up straight. They were uncomfortable being here, just as much as you were. And they were also tired. Incredibly tired.
You stopped and looked at them. "Ionnious, Mydon, you can leave."
Both men looked at each other, then at your mother, who was clearly annoyed. "These men are my guard, and they will not leave."
You looked. "How long have you been on duty?" You asked the two men.
"Since before sunrise." Mydon replied, not knowing who to actually listen to, the prince, or the queen. Since both, before Philip held power over his life. But they said nothing more, as the battle of wills played before.
"Then go rest." You said. "Being tired is something that will not help protect my mother."
Your mother did not seem to agree. "No, you will remain." She demanded. "And you will remember your place."
"And my place is your son." You replied. "And you won't be safe if your men are tired."
That made your mother pause. Then she looked at the two men, both regal and at attention. But you knew she could see that they were tired. "You are dismissed."
Both guards gave a salute, walking away, leaving you and your mother alone.
"Why do you anger me so?" She asked as she looked down upon you. "You are nothing but the spare."
"I know." You replied. "But they were tired."
"They are my servants." She replied, striking back with venom and annoyance. "You are a Prince of Macedon, they are beneath you!"
"They are soldiers of my father, they are not your slaves." You replied, gathering what little courage you had in your heart. Because that was the truth for you at least. People deserved the respect of their station.
She then glared at you, with eyes hard as the mountains. There were things that she wanted to say, but ideas arose in her head, and she smiled.
She then knelt down and pinched your cheek… her demeanor changed. "My child, you are Alexanders' brother… and for too long, you have been coddled by your nurses and tutors."
You looked away, pushing her hand away, you knew what she was doing… at least you thought. She was always angered whenever she saw you, using your authority… to help people. She always wanted to teach you that it was not the way the world worked.
And she knew you recognized it. "When you're father returns… we shall decide your punishment."
You nodded.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Alexander was waiting at the bottom of the steps of the yard, waiting for you, as you walked down. "Hail brother!" He said as he ran towards you with a great smile on his face. He hugged you tightly and he laughed.
He did not see your tears, but then again, he never saw them. He only wanted to see you smile. It was one of the strange things that he always did. He knew that you were never cheerful. Knew you never really had much to feel happy about.
Yet he always did his best to make you forget them.
He was sweaty and dirty and smelled of dirt, he must have just finished training and immediately came to see you.
When you did not return the embrace, that forced him to realize what was wrong. "Mother summoned you again… didn't she?"
You nodded, saying nothing as you looked at the ground, towards your feet.
"What did she say?" He ordered, trying to force you to speak.
"Nothing." You replied.
Alexander knelt down and tilted your head upward to face his own. He nodded "It's alright to tell me."
You said nothing. You just forced your head down to face the ground again. "I've been bad."
"What makes you say that?" He asked.
"Mothers guards were not up to standard, they had been on duty since before sunrise. They were starting to fall asleep. I dismissed them so they could rest."
Alexander nodded. "Sometimes it isn't your place to help people." He then placed a hand on your shoulder. "Come on."
"Where are we going?" You asked.
He said nothing, but you didn't feel calm.
But then again, you never felt calm with Alexander.
But you did feel safe.
---------------------------------
You got your answer when you arrived at the throne room, where Father was waiting. He was not fresh from battle, but he had been seemingly taken away from another matter to deal with his sons.
Mother was too, but she was not happy to see that you were coming with Alexander. "Neoptolemus was supposed to come alone." She was not happy with the fact her favored son was there.
But she was never happy with you.
Alexander waited to speak, as Philip spoke. "Why did I hear from my queen, that my son sent away her guard?"
You did not speak. Instead, you only bowed your head in shame.
Mother then spoke. "He seemed to believe that I was too hard on the men, that I have-"
"Quiet." He spoke with a tone that sounded both caring and… angered, at his wife. "I want to hear my son."
"He will not speak." Your mother stated.
Alexander then stepped forward. "Then I will speak for him."
That made you look up. "My brother ordered them away because they were tired, unable to perform their duties, and others would replace them."
Philip gave a wiry smile, while your mother seemed annoyed. "What punishment is there, when he only cares for our mother's safety? What fool would ever seek punishment for protection of a more able class?"
Alexander pointed to you. "I see nothing more than clarity… of taking action instead of allowing action to take place."
"Aren't you in agreement with that father?" Alexander asked.
That made Philip nod. "Well put."
Your mother seemed incensed. "You are allowing him to-"
"Silence!" Philip rose from his throne and looked at his wife with one eye. His good eye. "I think it would be better if we forgot about this. My son does not deserve punishment, nor does he deserve praise. Duty has its own rewards."
He then walked forward, looking down at you. "Hold up your arm." He ordered.
You did, and he took it, and you tried to pull away. But your father's grip was too strong. "Have you begun your training?"
"No Father." You whispered, whimpering in pain from his terrifyingly strong grip. He was hurting you, and he did not care.
He nodded, grunting and feeling a sense of disappointment.
"Tomorrow, you will join the other boys and your brother. You will no longer be coddled. You will learn to lead. To fight…"
He then let go. "You're childhood ends."
He then walked away. "Let us go. Court will begin soon, and there is much to be done."
------------------------------------------------------
Life would change after that, as you began a life of a Prince and a soldier.
