A Passage to the New Era
A Passage to the New Era

Nepo looked uncertain as he sat on his mount, staring into the setting sun with a frowning face with anxiousness deep in his heart. A bundle of light javelins wrapped around with leather straps, with it tied to him. The open side faces his right shoulder so he could pull out a javelin quickly.

The images of his mother fills his mind, of her unwavering disappointment with words filling his head of how he couldn't astrive to be as his elder brother..the self loathing from within speaking out the fact that he'll never reach the heights of Alexandros that he and everyone knew would lead him someday..

That one reminder of Alexandros..his encouraging nature for his brother to strive to become what he wants somewhat alleviated his anxiousness while he stared at the distance, however doubt still remains.

With one last look at his home, he sets off to the wild to begin a self-training to see how far he could learn the ways of the horseback heard from the tales of the east by the merchants coming from the east. Where warriors on horseback dominate the battlefield with great manoeuvring over their enemy forces.

Hearing about how this new form of utilizing horseback units, Nepo sought to improve himself in this new way of combat first before employing them down. Not wanting anyone else who he knows being injured by his own recommendation, and not wanting to disappoint father of having no proof of concept to his ideals of defeating their enemies with the new-way employment of cavalry, he decided to train himself first and showcase what this new can blossom into.

In fact, this was part of his new ideals that he hoped would usher the end to the old slow way of combat that he had studied like a nail to a brick wall, finding many times to utilize the underused unit types to full effectivity while also employing multiple ways to end the enemy army through many actions..

But still, as the night slowly crawled up the sky with many stars beginning to show its light, he remained uncertain..

Until he hears a sound, startled, he changes his focus to where that noise was located only to find an owl looking at him..

His eyes widened with a gasp of shock, he suddenly felt all of his doubts, fears, and uncertainty leave him like the evaporation of water. A newfound confidence blooms within him never felt before during his time at home, where he's always being compared to his brother..

A tear drops to his cheek, one full of relief as he smiles to himself.

With all his doubts washed away, he reached out behind him to take out a harpoon, his intent clear as he looks back at the horizon with a newfound confidence in himself, his body, his ideals. Resolution now ingrained as he tightly grasps the staff of the held harpoon, before he encouraged his horse to go onwards to a start to a journey of self-discovery, self-learning, and self-training.

The Numbers
The Numbers

Neoptolemus looks at the maths equation written like how his mother looks at him when she isn't feeling disappointment, frustrated at the seemingly long form explanation that is needed to solve the answer..

Why do they need to write out the answer in a long form way? Sure, he understands the necessity of using images as ways to show proof along with the writing, but do they really need to spend a large amount of time writing the evidence and in addition write out the picture?

Neo looks at it with an unsatisfied look on his face before beginning to write out random symbols just to keep his mind out of the equation, he still does not understand the need of an excessively large-form of writing out the answer and question when he can just simplify it to something..

'But what?' He thought to himself while staring at the window of his room with a befuddled yet determined face.

After looking out of the window for some time, he looked back down at the equation with the same frustrated look on his face, only to look at a small line at the doodle-filled space of the papyrus..

Suddenly, just like that, he had a brilliant Eureka moment.

However, he isn't a person from Syracuse, so he won't just run out of the door like some random man in the stress in some city after jumping out from his bathtub and running around the city.

With inspiration reaching his mind like a thunderbolt, he quickly began writing out more symbols to see if they could potentially make his explanation faster without the need to go on a paragraph or two just to answer the question while also performing geometric proof of how he reached the answer.

Since he saw the line first, he decided to give it the numeric value of "one", the rest went through trial and error just to decide the shape of the symbols would represent their own numerical value.

It was after drawing random pictures and shapes before settling for a line with a panhandle before the right end leads to another line that is on a diagonal line before being attached to a small line. He gives this the numerical value of "two".

After performing more random forms of drawing out symbols before ending with the same panhandle line at the top, a straight line that ends when intersected with an upright panhandle, and a small line crossing at the middle of the one connecting the panhandles. He gives this the numerical value of "three".

And so on, he worked on what he thought of as the "main essential numbers" before finishing with a box with its right line extended downwards before being connected to an upright panhandle line, making it have the numerical value of "nine".

Neo smiled to himself before readily began rewriting his answers into the format..before arriving at new problems.

First..how is he going to form equations without the needed symbols to represent, addition, subtraction, and multiplication?

And thus, he began experimenting writing out random equations with his already written symbols before ending up with the following:

Addition will be represented by two lines intersecting in the middle.

Subtraction will be a line going horizontal

Multiplication will be represented by two lines at an angle intersecting with the other.

After establishing these new symbols with their new values, he began on a new sheet of his answers through this new symbol-based and quick way of mathematics, with the restrictions of using words upon words (although he did state what the symbols mean at the top), before creating proof by using shapes.

After finishing them, Neo looks at his work with satisfaction before he frowned, he looked over another scroll that details the Babylonian concept of multiplication with interpretations from the Greek scholars before he realises he needs a placeholder, otherwise the numerical value of say ten would be incorrect.

Mind already tired, he decided to draw a circle, which was more oval in shape, and completed his maths self-lesson.

He smiled after finally completing this project before looking out at the window, where the darkness arrived with the multitudes of stars in the night sky. He leaned back to his seat before he froze as he suddenly thought of something..

'I'm not showing teacher Aristotle! He'll call it a worthless endeavour.' He thought to himself sadly.

He hears the door open, making him turn around to see his elder brother, who has a look of worry and concern as he approaches him.

"Brother?" He asks in worriment. "You haven't left the bedroom since teacher's lecture.."

"I'm fine, brother." Neo tried to brush off the topic with a strained smile, Alexander noticed this before turning towards the many papyrus on his desk.

"You worked on it?" He asks in curiosity, approaching the furniture before looking at pieces of writing and symbols to take a closer look at them.

He turns to Neo, who was frozen in many thoughts, with a light in his eye with an excited smile on his face.

"Brother! You found a way to write out the answer in a simple way!" He says excitedly. "Not like those long worded answers that's painful to write!"

"Really?" Neo responds with a startled expression, causing his brother to smirk in amusement.

"Of course!" Alexander answers as he pats his brother on the back. "In fact, I encourage you to share it one day after developing this..system more."

Originally, Neo didn't plan on doing anything after completing this self-formed system that he thought will be forgotten in his mind after thinking that he would be forced to keep on answering equations based on words and the physical world..

But, it was with Alexander's encouragement combined with his tired but creative mind that Neo wondered if there was more to numbers than what was thought of, if there was something else that is there before their very eyes yet neglected in favour of geometric shapes..

If his brother saw worth in what he was doing, he swears he will bring forth this new system and have it surpass the geometric mentality of Mathematics and instead focus on more than geometry.

Thus he wrote what he had begun in a separate scroll, titled "The Numbers".

N/A: Never knew I'd write more based on mathematics than strategies and tactics..additionally don't want our young lad to suffer the absence of simple ways of writing out every equation..at least the Pythagorian Theorem will be solved quicker in the numeric form rather the worded form.

So many tempting options, not enough time for all of them. I'm thoroughly tempted to just skip the court, I mean, what's the worst that can happen?;)

Father's Lessons
-[X]Court: Your Father wants you here. He wants you by his side. Rolled:D100 => 87

You and Alexander were standing by your father's side, it was a position you would have seen as impossible to see yourself in even a few months ago. Your father seemed to view you with a lesser degree than Alexander, favoring him more and more, while leaving you alone to others—especially your mother.

Who was also nearby, watching you from afar, yet so close that you could feel the temptations within her gaze, one of profound disappointment.

Yet you knew that Father did not see it that way, at least at the moment. He knew that you were well enough, and old enough to be introduced to court. Though it was something you did not really want to do.

Everyone here viewed you as a thing, someone to be manipulated to so much. You were warned by Alexander that the court was never a place for those so young, because there were men… and women, and their children that saw you as their way to power.

"Neoptolemus." He said your name, not looking back to face you. "Come forward."

Just as he planned. He was going to introduce you.

You walked forward, in front of his throne, and then, bowed. "My son. My youngest son, who has been blessed by the Gods with my strength, and my mind. Whom the gods tested in the field on horseback, where he conquered all who set before him."

An exaggeration… a knowing exaggeration… But no one would dare question it. It was a tale and a story that all would ask about. Whether it was truth or falsehood. It would also give you the advantage in all conversations about it. Only a few knew the truth. That it was only one rider, and one similar in age. But who would bother seeing or trying to find that child?

No one would have time for it. Thats who.

You knew exactly why Father was doing this. He was… helping you in his own way. The political way.

"Rise my son." He said crisply, and without delay. You did, but not looking up into his eye. "Take your place by my side." He ordered.

And you did, calmly walking over to his left side, as Alexander already occupied the right side. His blind side.

But now all of Macedon knows who you are. And they find you quite… exciting.

Reward: You have been introduced to Macedon's court, and they have found you exciting as Alexander.

Meaning a great many want to manipulate you.

-[X]The Slaves of a Kingdom: Your Father came to you and told you to walk with him. He had things to show you. Rolled:D100 => 98

Father was waiting for you. There was nothing that you could really do, as he sent men to escort you to him. "Good." He stated as he turned around. "Walk with me boy."

You went to his good side, and you were feeling his tall and intimidating presence as he took breathed in with a heavy breath. "Do you know where we are going?" He asked.

There was a softness in his voice, one that you do not really know where it came from, though you were very clearly afraid. He was never soft-spoken, and Father was always larger than life, with a booming voice and a clear tone everywhere he went.

To hear him even sound a little bit like you… was concerning. You were afraid. He wasn't.

"No Father." You replied, being honest with him.

He then gave a small chuckle. "Never once did you try to follow Alexander when he and I went to this place."

No. But that word was silent in your throat as you merely made a nod of your head. Father was bemused. "Where were you?" He knew exactly where you were, but he wanted an answer from you.

"With mother mostly." You replied. "Or the nurses." There was a pause. "Why does she hate me?"

Your father was taken aback. "Hate you? What makes you think that?"

"She is always disappointed in me, no matter what I do." You replied.

That earned you a chuckle. "She is just worried for you in her own way. A Way I don't approve of."

"What way?" You asked.

"She thinks that only one of you can protect the other when I believe differently." He paused. "She believes Alexander is the only one who can protect you when I am gone and thinks because of that, you must be protected. To not know what your duty is… or the failure in that duty is."

You stopped and he saw the hundreds of slaves that were working… captured soldiers and people from his victorious conquest. Many were being treated… what was expected to treat a slave.

Yet one was tied to a post… suffering the lash. You looked away. Yet your father's hands forced you to watch.

His hands were hurting you. "You will watch." He said.

The man was lashed with a cat of nine… but they continued to lash… two hundred. Three hundred…

By the time they got to four hundred… the man was limp. Dead.

"Now you see." He said.

"What?" You asked.

"The cost of failure. For you, and for Alexander." He stated. "The cost of defeat is death." He paused, looking at you, as he knelt down, his eye facing your own. "You and Alexander cannot fail… for you will die, painfully, and alone."

"And our kingdom will be destroyed."

He then stood up. "Learn this lesson well. It will be the only time you will be able to learn it."

Reward: Philip has taught you the most important lesson that you can learn.

Failure is not an option, for if you do, you will die.

-[X]Brothers: Alexander came to your room to talk to you. About what, you do not know. Rolled:D100 => 22

"Come on… we're going with father." He smiled.

And you would follow him.
--------------------------------------------------------

Character MOMENT!:

How does this make you feel:

[]Determined: Failure is never an option now… That means you must drive yourself forward. Because you had to.
[]Scared: Failure is never an option now… And those words terrified you. You didn't know how you were going to be the one who would help your brother.
[]Alone: Failure is never an option now… And all that did was make you feel alone. You had to face it all alone, because who else could?
-------------------------------------

You rode alongside your father, but what did you really like seeing?

[]The Cavalry: You rode with the nobles and mercenaries… they were people who wanted to meet you since your father introduced you at court.

[]The infantry: The regular men who were fighting for their king and prince. They were men who were going to hold the line, and fight.

[]The Skirmishers: You always wanted to see archers work, and you looked at all of them and saw legends.

[]The Baggage Train: Something in your mind went to the baggage train, and you were going to see how your father managed them.

[]The Heteroi: Alexander wants you by his and father's side, and so you will follow.

Reasoning:

This is literally the only positive trait we'd get from this, why wouldn't we take it?

For the last one, it's between the cavalry and the Hetaroi, since we were practically born in the saddle. As such, I've made two plans if we want to pursue one or the other.

A good lesson, with all the harshness I'd expect from Philip. I'm intrigued as to what the other 2 options would do, but this is the only option that makes sense. As for the 2nd choice, while the mounted options make sense I think the infantry option matches our Compassionate trait.

All those traits are positive, you just aren't seeing the upside just yet.

But you will, if you think about it a little bit..

I chose to write Philip slightly differently then historically... at least in what we have of him.

he's unwaveringly for his army, his state and his sons.

It can mach with the trait, but the cavalary mach with us too and we are a god riding a horse, guys we don't have any training for the infantary i say go with the cav and be the leader to the charge
